Message from the President
Brother LeRoy Lowery, III
“No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child” Abraham Lincoln
Last weekend the Beautillion Committee added to what has been an extraordinary year for Mu Lambda Chapter. The Henry Arthur Callis Beautillion Gala was held at the Blackburn Student Center on the campus of Howard University – the17th time this event has been held. This one was made special by the coalition of positive aspects that took place – the affair was well attended, over 440 persons; the ambiance was first rate with up lighting, spotlights, flowers and balloons; a silent auction was well received with great offerings beautifully displayed by the Alpha Wives; the program featured accomplished Beaux, proud parents, effervescent dance partners and dignitaries such as DC Mayor Vincent C. Gray, Council Chair Kwame Brown and Alcorn State University president Bro. M. Christopher Br own II; helping mentor the Beaux were brothers from Beta Chapter who, along with the Mu Lambda neophytes, showed crisp, rhythmic Alpha Spirit; and the event was profitable!
Individually, each of the above facets may not be seen as such a big deal, but collectively the confluence of each made the program a resounding success. When we circled for the Fraternal Hymn it was a grand scene – brothers by the dozens, young and old, singing mostly on key. It is my humble opinion that the largest factor was Alpha Spirit! If you give me that ol’ Alpha Spirit its good enough for me. An activity that brings together undergraduate and alumni brothers of all ages united for a common, worthy cause is powerful stuff indeed. One could feel the energy throughout the room. I believe it bodes well for all other events and programs for years to come. If you look at the photo from the Eastern Region Convention after we won the Charles H. Wesley Brotherhood Award with Beta Chapter, you will see the pride and enthusiasm.
We are going to continue to build on the momentum, increasing in amplitude and frequency. I salute th e Beautillion Committee, led by the hard-working brother Eddie Neal, the Alpha Wives and all brothers who took the time to help in any capacity with the Beautillion program. Abe Lincoln got it right – we all stooped to help the young men in the Beautillion program and as a result we all can stand tall and proud!
Now for a public service announcement. Each brother should have received your Official Ballot for the 34th General President Election by now. If not, check with headquarters. Do not fail to certify and return your ballot before the June 30, 2012 deadline. As creators of “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People”, Alpha men never shirk the responsibility to make their voices heard in any election. Not now, and particularly not in November.

Scenes from the Spoken Word event held at the Mu Lambda Community House on Saturday, April 7, 2012. Congrats go out to Brother Daniel Kittrell and his committee for a job well done! The attendance, the artists, the ambiance, and the refreshments were first rate! We expect to put on more events of this caliber in the future.
