Thai wisdom

Ikat silk weaving in Thailand. Traditional Thai craft

Ikat is a textile patterning technique in which the warp or weft yarns are dyed prior to weaving the fabric. The word ‘ikat’ comes from the Malay-Indonesian word mengikat, which means “to tie.”

A characteristic of Ikat textiles is an apparent “blurriness” to the design. The blurriness is a result of the extreme difficulty the weaver has lining up the dyed yarns so that the pattern comes out perfectly in the finished cloth. The blurriness can be reduced by using finer yarns or by the skill of the craftsperson.

Ikat dyeing can be a very laborious process. The design is first drawn and the warp and weft threads are carefully measured, tied and placed in the dye solution. For fabric of different colors, the ties are removed and the warp is retied and dyed again to create layers of color.
