A MESSAGE FROM ANTONI CIMOLINO

THIS ROUGH MAGIC

The title above comes from a line in The Tempest, spoken by the sorcerer Prospero as he takes leave of his “so potent art” and embarks on a new phase of life.

Theatre itself is a magical art, paradoxically using illusion to tell us truth. Its magic is “rough,” not perfect: while it can lead us to a better understanding, it cannot dictate where we go from there. Yet this need to explore our existence through the mimicry of performance seems hardwired into us, an essential part of being human.

For my last season as Artistic Director, I have chosen to explore aspects of this strangely potent art we call the theatre.

From the amateur theatricals of A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the double lives led by Jack and Algernon in The Importance of Being Earnest, role-playing is a recurring motif of the season. Iago, in Othello, masks his villainy in the guise of a concerned friend, while Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman, turns illusion inward, in a desperate effort to convince himself that all is well in his world.

The characters in Guys and Dolls – who include a nightclub performer – are largerthan-life caricatures, yet we feel as if we know them. At the same time, Something Rotten!, revived by popular demand, puts Shakespeare himself on stage as it spins its

hilariously fanciful yarn about the creation of the very genre to which it belongs.

Dramatic illusion delivers a surprising narrative twist in The King James Bible Play, while Waiting for Godot questions both our place in the universe and our expectations of drama itself.

Saturday, Sunday, Monday uses eccentric characters worthy of commedia dell’arte to raise a serious question: how can we rediscover the magic within each of us? Meanwhile, The Tao of the World reimagines a classic Restoration comedy for a modern-day world of wealth and privilege – and shows that we all have roles to play in making society work.

Finally, while some adults may look askance at “playacting,” no children do, for it is how they learn to navigate the world. Our explorations begin in childhood, and so it is fitting that our play for young people, The Hobbit, itself takes the form of a quest toward maturity.

I hope you will join us on our own quest this season: a quest for laughter, tears, excitement and inspiration, as we pay affectionate homage to the power of theatre in all our lives.

SYNOPSIS

Set in bustling Manhattan in 1949, Guys and Dolls follows a colourful cast of gamblers, showgirls and mission workers whose lives collide in unexpected ways. Nathan Detroit scrambles to secure a venue for his famed but illicit craps game, all while trying to keep the peace with his devoted fiancée, Miss Adelaide. To raise the money he needs for the game, Nathan makes a daring wager with slick high-roller Sky Masterson – a bet that sends Sky straight into the path of earnest missionary Sarah Brown. As schemes unfold and loyalties are tested, romance, chance and charm weave together in this classic musical comedy.

Guys and Dolls endures as a classic because every element shines. I know this as an actor, a director, a choreographer and an audience member. Each time I visit this magnificent show, I discover more. What a thrill it is to approach it with a new cast and new perspectives. As a student of this beautiful thrust stage, I find it deeply meaningful to adjust the storytelling of a production based on what both the script and the stage suggest. The opportunities allowed by this theatre make for a unique audience experience. They also bring tremendous joy to our cast and creative team.

And what a marvellous cast – exceptionally gifted artists devoted to their craft and always willing to try anything, at least once. Nearly everyone in Guys and Dolls is doing double duty in Something Rotten! The display of skill, experience and raw talent is extraordinary. We have a stage of legend that offers intimacy and grandeur in equal measure, and an inspired group of designers with boundless imagination and skill. We have an orchestra, powerful yet unseen, comprising some of the finest musicians in the country, who are more than ready to embrace the challenge of the score. I’m thrilled that we were able to once again secure the orchestrations

Michael Starobin made for the 1992 Broadway production that acknowledge the evolution of the musical since the opening of Guys and Dolls in 1950, and dance arrangements by Mark Hummel that celebrate the capabilities of contemporary dancers.

The magnificent book tops it off! Guys and Dolls is, without question, one of the finest pieces of musical theatre ever created. Branded a classic almost the instant it premièred, Guys and Dolls defies expectations. The very fact that crapshooters have a “ballet” gives me an opportunity to turn traditional ideas on their head. The “dolls” of the title are independent, employed and empowered, willing to negotiate with the “guys,” but always setting the terms.

Guys and Dolls offers a remarkably balanced view of the romantic transactions of this fabled Broadway bunch, and it does it with great joy and precision. The show’s economy is startling. There is nothing extra or out of place. Every word, every note, every step earns its keep

It’s worth noting that when Starobin – a prodigious talent who began his orchestrating career with Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George at age 27 – was asked to create new orchestrations for the ’92 production of Guys and Dolls, he insisted that his job was to expand and enrich the story in an emotional way. Sensitive to how our modern ears are accustomed to hearing recorded music, Starobin wanted to showcase the “live-ness” of the theatrical musical experience, especially evident with a big band. The night-to-night, moment-tomoment, never-to-be-repeated reality of the interaction of band, actors, singers and dancers creates an exhilarating and uniquely thrilling experience. I hope you enjoy the show as much as we enjoy sharing it with you.

DAMON RUNYON

Alfred Damon Runyon (1884-1946) grew up in Colorado before embarking on a journalistic career in New York. During World War II, he served as a war correspondent for Hearst newspapers, remaining with them as a columnist and sports writer, and eventually becoming one of the highestpaid newspapermen in New York City. Guys and Dolls was the title of his short story collection published in 1932. Subsequent collections included Blue Plate Special (1934) and Take It Easy (1938). He also collaborated with Howard Lindsay on the stage comedy A Slight Case of Murder (1935).

FRANK LOESSER

One of America’s great composers and lyricists, Frank Loesser (19101969) began his career during the Depression as a lyricist, contributing to Broadway revues and nightclub acts. His 1936 revue The Illustrator’s Show led to a Hollywood contract, during which he collaborated with composers like Burton Lane, Jule Styne, Arthur Schwartz and Hoagy Carmichael. Some of his film songs include “Two Sleepy People” and “I Don’t Want to Walk Without You.” During World War II, he wrote both words and music for “Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition.” After the war, he won an Oscar for “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (1949). He then wrote the music and lyrics for Where’s Charley? (1948), followed by Guys and Dolls (1950), The Most Happy Fella (1956), Greenwillow (1960), and the Pulitzer–winning How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961).

Born in Russia in 1897, Jo Swerling was a playwright, screenwriter and vaudeville sketch writer. Mr. Swerling’s long career began as a reporter and feature writer in New York and Chicago.

After studying to be a doctor and an accountant, Abe Burrows had a career in sales before becoming a successful radio script writer and writer/performer of musical parody numbers. His first Broadway libretto was Guys and Dolls, cowritten with Jo Swerling, with a score by Frank Loesser. Among the musicals for which he provided librettos are Can-Can and Silk Stockings (both with scores by Cole Porter), Make A Wish, Say, Darling and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (which he also directed; score by Frank Loesser). His non-musical plays include Cactus Flower (wrote and directed) and Forty Carats (directed).

He attended Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts and the School of Cadence Ballet to further his training in ballet and modern dance. He later moved to New York City to complete a BFA in dance and a minor in business at NYU. He has also trained with Alvin Ailey and The Royal Ballet in London, England. Post graduation, he joined the cast of Disney’s The Lion King that played at the Princess of Wales Theatre under Mirvish Productions. The Stratford Festival acknowledges the members of The Friends of the Festival for their continued contributions. This dedicated group of volunteers provides thousands of hours of support annually. They can be found everywhere –welcoming patrons to the theatre, answering questions, working on special projects, assisting at Meighen Forum events and so much more! We are so grateful for all they contribute to making each season possible.

FOR ASSISTANCE AND ACCESSIBILITY

We’re here to help. Our facilities are accessible, and we offer assistive devices and services to patrons as and when required. If you need assistance, please ask the House Manager or any member of the Stratford Festival team.

CAMERAS, CELL PHONES AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES

For the safety of the artists and in accordance with the intellectual property rights associated with the productions, all cameras, audio and video recorders must be turned off during the performance. In addition, please turn off all mobile devices, as their sounds and lights will disturb actors and other guests. If you require access to a mobile device for accessibility reasons, please see the House Manager before the performance.

FOOD AND DRINK

We offer auditorium-friendly cups for our beverages and invite you to bring your drink to your seat.* Bottled water is also permitted; however, all snacks are to be enjoyed outside the auditorium.

*Complimentary beverages served within the members lounge cannot be consumed outside the lounge.

MEMBERS LOUNGES

We offer three complimentary lounges for those who contribute generously with financial gifts over and above their ticket purchases. Please consult stratfordfestival.ca/Membership

LATE ARRIVAL AND READMISSION

If you arrive late or leave the auditorium during the performance, we will make every effort to seat you at a suitable break. Please be advised that this may not be the seat you are ticketed for, depending on its location in the theatre. In the interim, or if we cannot reseat you safely, we invite you to watch the performance on our lobby monitors.

FIRST AID

We take the health and safety of our patrons seriously. Any member of our team will coordinate first-aid assistance if required. Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) are available at all our venues.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

In case of an evacuation, please follow the instructions of Stratford Festival staff, who will escort you to safety. If you discover a fire, please activate the fire alarm and notify a Festival staff member.
