Montana Tech . . . A Tradition of Excellence
.. ~" .
If we would write all we should write, if we would say all we should say, if we would do all we should do co make this yearbook all it should be, then the space between these covers would indeed be great; but we have done our utmost to compile from the infinite amount which should be shown, the best to bring back fond memories and to inspire high ideals for the future of all that pertains to Montana Tech.

From the molten magma from which this yearbook borrows its name come all of the elements that form the earth and all that is on earth today. This borrowed name is possibly the most appropriate tide that co uld have been chosen for this book because it coo is co mposed of many elements that will change and advance the world. These elements, of co urse, are the students and faculty of M ontana Tech. To these future world leaders, we present this 1987 M AGM A in hopes that it may help preserve the manifold memories of many owners.

When the Board of Regents made cuts this year, their choice was to "save" by phasing out Montana Tech's Business Administration program. The students had something to say, though! Protest Week at Tech began Tuesday.January 20, and continued for a full week. Everything started at the "M" with students organizing there to spell out "S.O.S." (Save Our School) in candlelight. Throughout the week students, legislators, faculty, and the people of Butte were asked to wear black arm bands co mourn the death of the Business Administration program. For the rest of the week Marcus Daly remained blindfolded, the Montana State Flag was flown at half mast and a bonfire rally took place west of campus. The finale was on Tuesday, January 27, when students and interested parties traveled to llelena co March on the Capitol protesting the plague on Montana's Higher Education. Even though the program was cue, students still accomplished their purpose-they let people know that Tech students care about their school

Montana Tech Day is a time for Tech to show off to prospective students and to the Butte community. This year, besides technical presentations from industry representatives, the day also included activities like a bridge building contest, an egg dropping contest, and a computer programming contest. It turned out to be a day full of information and fun.

of Montana Tech: We, the MAGMA staff, who have had the responsibility of preparing this yearbook for publication, do earnestly state that the following advertisers have made the publication of the MAGMA possible. A message for graduates In addition to a time for celebration, graduation marks a point in personal development. You have invested time and effort in yourself. Now, you're ready for the next step in life. Each member of the Entech family of companies is like an individual. Each works toward goals, accomplishes them and moves on to new challenges. Among those challenges is identifying new opportunities and acting on them. That is how American business continues to grow, producing new products and creating career opportunities for each year's crop of graduates. We offer congratulations for your accomplishment and sincere wishes for a productive future as you take new steps and meet new challenges in your life.

THANKS BUTTE ADVERTISEMENTS 217
We hope that this yearbook provides a comprehensive review of most activities which have occurred over the past year. We know that we are publishing a book which is far from perfect; we know many ways in which our efforts could be improved. Our object has been to give a record of the life of our college during the past year. We ask that you bear with us in whatever faults you may discover and to enjoy whatever worth you may find. We would like to dedicate this yearbook to all past MAGMA's and their staffs who have worked hard to improve the yearbook. In looking back over the years, we can still see the impact they have had, and have seen their efforts turn into accomplishments. May all the dreams, inspirations, and present destinies of the future MAGMA's come true, as well as to keep all past memories strong. We would also like to dedicate this, our last, yearbook to our parents, Howard, Sheran, and Marieann, who have been the source of our own inspirations. We would also like to thank the World Museum of Mining for allowing us to use the cover poem, Hadnagy Photography for the student and faculty portraits, and past MAGMA's for a source of information. A special thanks goes co Dawn and Heather Holm for all of their help. Most of all we would like co thank our advertisers, and Don Miller, our advisor, who has fought for us, believed in us, and supported us. Over the past years, we have earned much more than just a degree from Tech. We have found that knowledge is gained elsewhere, rather than just from the classroom. We feel the words on the next page express our thoughts well. Nicky Holm Irvin Vavruska Co-Editors 1986-87
218 CLOSING
The "Upper Road" over life's journey is traveled by those who have the qualities and virtues to overcome difficulties, surmount obstacles and stick to ideals.
It is up hill and down. y OU will pass through foul and fair weather-you will encounter steep grades, rocky slopes and narrow passages, and there are many evidences of struggle by the wayside. You will see the by-paths here and there which lead off to the "Lower Road"-but the main highway is plainly marked at every fork and junction so that he who runs may read-and if you follow the sign of Progress that marks the way you will reach your goal and experience the keen joy of having won.
