DEDICATION 'Dean c:5\rthur E. cAdami, 1907--1956 Seldom has one man done so much for any institution. It would be impossible to list all the things Dean Adami has done for the Montana School of Mines in the short space allotted, so the Magma staff, speaking for the students, both past and present, will instead take this space to thank him for the help he has so unselfishly given to all who sought it. To those who sought personal ~elp, he counseled wisely; to those who sought scholastic assistance, he advised carefully; and to those who sought financial help in the form of jobs, he aided swiftly. It is for these things that he will be long remembered. If the students are perhaps better men when they graduate, no small part of it will be due to Dean Adami, and it is the sincere wish of all who knew him that he will continue to influence the lives of those men who come in contact with him, so that they may be better engineers, and the world a better place in which to live.

MONTANA SCHOOL OF MINES BUTTE, MONT ANA OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

February 13, 1956 To the Students of Montana School of Mines: Here is your MAGMA, sti II warm from the heat of formation and containing here and there some rich veins and remarable products of magmatic segregation and differentiation. May it always remind you of happy days, good friends, and satisfying accomplishment!

Montana Mines alumni have always been noted for their ability to "pull together" for their school. It's a good idea to keep this book with you as you travel about the world in professional work. Not only will it serve as a directory of school friends; it will also be useful when you want to tell others about your alma mater. Best wishes for your future! Sincerely yours, J. R. Van Pelt President JRVP:lh

Butt , Montono

Know Montana THE TEACHER WAS NOT FAR BEHIND As the prospectors moved north from gold discoveries at Virginia City and Bannock, building mining camps in gulches and canyons, the "professors" were not far behind.

Education, following the trailblazers, moved into the Butte mining district in 1865 into Silver Bow and the next year into Butte.

The pioneers trudged from the Virginia City district where schools had been started in 1863 at Bannock and in 1864 at Virginia City.

Unlike the schools in the other early-day mining camps the first Butte school featured a course in dancing. That came about because the first regular teacher, Colonel Woods, was not only a competent educator but a cultivated musician. He took pride in teaching the young how to dance as well as to read and write.

Woods, however, did not teach the first classes in Butte. He was late in getting to the mining camp to fill the assignment and Thomas C. Porter, drawn earlier to Butte by gold, fi I led in for him. Porter had taught the previous year at Silver Bow. He was experienced, having taught school in lllinoi before coming west. The first chool in Butte, under Woods and taught during the winter of 1866-67, had a hart term. However, the next year education did get a foothold in a school opened by William Haynes.

As the prospector settled down, the professor stayed.
