ELLO AND WELCOME to the August 2026 edition of Motor Trader. This month takes us across Queensland, with stories from Emu Park and Gladstone, Cairns and Brisbane, as we meet more of the remarkable people and businesses that are part our industry. In our latest Auto Women profile feature, for example, we chat with Melinda Boswell, co-owner of Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service. Melinda’s career path into automotive has been an interesting one, and today her influence extends beyond her own business through her role representing Central Queensland on the MTA Queensland Board. We also travel to Gladstone to talk with Les and Brad Anderson, brothers who are the third generation of the family to run the Andersons Auto City dealership – a pillar of the Gladstone community whose

Motor Trader is the official publication of the Motor Trades Association of Queensland. The role of Motor Trader is to inform members of current issues and legislation affecting the industry. As such it can be regarded as the business magazine for the Queensland motor industry. The role of Motor Trader is not to be in competition with the technical magazines already on the market. It will advise of new vehicles being released and of the latest technology incorporated into them; it will advise of latest technology affecting members in each of the MTA Queensland Divisions; it will keep members abreast of the latest in motor industry training and industrial affairs; and it will keep members informed of the latest technical aids available through MTA Queensland Member Services, which will assist members in staying ahead of the technological revolution presently being encountered within the motor industry. story stretches back 73 years. Further north, our Q&A feature takes us to Cairns and NQ Hydraulics and Heavy Diesel, while we also report on the recent MTA Institute Trainers’ Conference, which brought our trainers together from all corners of Queensland to the MTA Institute HQ in Brisbane for three days of professional development. An important event, the conference ensures the continuing delivery of industry-leading training to apprentices and technicians across the state. Some industry issues covered this month include news from the MTAA calling for stronger protections for small automotive businesses against unfair trading practices, while MTA Queensland has responded to Queensland’s new e-mobility laws and the crackdown on illegal e-mobility devices. As always, there is plenty happening on the new vehicle front and this edition is packed with announcements as brands continue to introduce new models, technologies, and powertrains - including the BYD Seal 6 PHEV which graces our cover. I hope you enjoy this edition and if you have some news you'd like to share, get in touch. I look forward to hearing from you Cheers Jonathan Nash, Editor jonathann@mtaq.com.au

From the Desk of Management

O

ne of MTA Queensland’s most important jobs is supporting the development of the skilled workforce our industry needs, so both ensuring Queensland’s automotive workforce has access to worldROD CAMM class training and encouraging CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MTA QUEENSLAND more people to build careers in our industry remain a major focus. One part of this work is developing the trainers of tomorrow and applications are open for the MTA Queensland VET Trainer Scholarships, which provide experienced professionals the opportunity to take the next step in their careers and share their knowledge and experience with the next generation of technicians. Click HERE for more info. We also continue to expand the training available to industry. Recently, we launched a new Wheel Alignment Fundamentals course (click HERE for more on that) and are developing a series of micro-credentials covering ADAS Awareness for Non-Technical Roles, Automotive Supervisor Training, and Automotive Networking and Communication. Importantly, we want industry to help shape these programs and I encourage employers and apprentices to take part in upcoming industry roundtables to provide feedback on these proposed micro-credentials. Your input will ensure they reflect real-world needs. Click HERE if you’re an employer and wish to take part. Click HERE if you’re an apprentice. Creating pathways into the industry is as important as developing quality training and our Meet & Greet events are a great way for job seekers and employers to connect. We have an event upcoming on September 10 in Brisbane South and it would be well worth your time to attend if you’re in the region. Click HERE to register. Finally, I must note that our commitment to skills development extends across Queensland and the MTA Institute will soon be bringing electric vehicle training to Cairns and Mackay. This is a great opportunity for technicians in those regions to develop these increasingly important skills. You can find out more by clicking HERE. Each of these initiatives addresses the ongoing workforce challenge, and they reflect our real commitment to attract people into automotive, to develop the skills of those already working within it, and to support businesses to build top-class teams. 4 | Motor Trader August 2026

T

he strength of Queensland’s automotive industry comes down to its people and the businesses that employ them. Supporting both remains at the heart of MTA Queensland’s work. KELLIE DEWAR August is Tradies National DEPUTY CEO | GENERAL Health Month, to be followed MANAGER MEMBER SERVICES closely by R U OK? Day in September, making this a time to reflect on wellbeing in our workplaces. Our industry can be very demanding, and creating an environment where people feel comfortable checking in with colleagues and having meaningful conversations can make a real difference. One way we have supported that conversation is through our automotive-themed TradeMutt shirts. As you would know, TradeMutt’s colourful workwear is designed to start conversations, with proceeds supporting TIACS, a free mental health counselling service for tradies and blue-collar workers. It has been a wonderfully positive initiative and we are proud of the response to our shirts and, more importantly, the conversations and support that have been generated. Click HERE to find out more about the initiative. Looking after people is one part of supporting a healthy business. We also recognise the pressures involved in running one. That is why MTA Queensland membership provides access to practical services designed to make operating a business a little easier. We offer expert workplace relations assistance and WH&S support and, if you’d like insurance, EFTPOS and energy reviews that can identify potential savings, our team and partners are ready to help. Members can also access workforce planning and staffing assistance, apprentice mentoring and a range of other resources too, all developed specifically for automotive businesses. Building connections is another important part of that support, particularly for women. Our upcoming Auto Women Socials provide an opportunity to share experiences and build professional networks, with Cairns on August 13 (click HERE for tickets) and Townsville on September 10 (click HERE for tickets). Expressions of interest are also open for upcoming Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast events (Click HERE). To all our members, thank you for your continued membership, engagement and support. It enables us to continue supporting the businesses and people who keep Queensland moving.

Justin Walker from NQ Hydraulics & Heavy Diesel

MTA |Q&A

Tucked into the Tolga Industrial Estate on the Atherton Tablelands, NQ Hydraulics & Heavy Diesel has grown from a oneman mobile repair operation into one of Far North Queensland's go-to workshops for earthmoving and heavy diesel equipment. We sat down with owner Justin Walker to talk about the move away from FIFO mining work, the lessons that came with growing a business from scratch, and why he still can't stay off the tools. WORDS & PHOTOS: LARA WILDE

TELL US ABOUT THE BUSINESS AND WHAT YOU SPECIALISE IN. JW: We're based at 2 Isabella Street, East

Atherton, and we specialise in the repair and maintenance of earthmoving and heavy diesel equipment. Our core work covers planned maintenance, breakdown 6 | Motor Trader August 2026

repairs, major component overhauls and reconditioning, hydraulic cylinder repairs, hydraulic hose manufacturing, and line boring and machining. Between us we've got extensive experience across most of the major earthmoving equipment brands, and that combined OEM knowledge gives us a real edge.

“I OPENED NQ HYDRAULICS AND HEAVY DIESEL IN 2016 TO SUPPORT A TRANSITION OUT OF FIFO WORK AT AN OVERSEAS MINING OPERATION IN PNG, AND SO I COULD SPEND MORE TIME WITH FAMILY. BY 2018 WE WERE IN FULL OPERATION.” working out of a bay in one customer's WHAT LED YOU TO START THE BUSINESS? JW: I opened NQ Hydraulics and Heavy Diesel shed. As the work, services and staff grew, in 2016 to support a transition out of FIFO work at an overseas mining operation in PNG, and so I could spend more time with family. By 2018 we were in full operation.

HOW HAS THE BUSINESS CHANGED SINCE THOSE EARLY DAYS? JW: We started as a one-person mobile

operation, which meant we were often at the mercy of the weather. Once we picked up some fantastic customers, we began

we moved into a smaller industrial shed, and not long after that into the shed we're in today. Having a permanent base has let us keep growing our services and keep upgrading equipment.

WHAT'S YOUR BACKGROUND IN THE TRADE? JW: I finished Year 12 and was offered a

heavy equipment fitter apprenticeship with a local company. That qualification opened the door to working with a August 2026 Motor Trader | 7

“GROWING UP ON A FARM, WE REPAIRED EVERYTHING OURSELVES, SOMETIMES REPURPOSING MATERIALS TO GET MACHINES RUNNING BECAUSE PARTS WERE SCARCE, OR IT JUST MADE MORE ECONOMIC SENSE.” number of OEM companies, both in Australia and overseas. My father was a fitter and turner and a diesel fitter, and I shared his interest in engines from an early age. Growing up on a farm, we repaired everything ourselves, sometimes repurposing materials to get machines running because parts were scarce, or it just made more economic sense. My mindset has always been that everything can be fixed, and I enjoy working out how to do it.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST LESSONS ALONG THE WAY? JW: It's okay to turn work away. In the early

days I took on every job that came to me which, as a one-man operation, meant six days on the tools and the seventh doing paperwork. With a young family, that wasn't sustainable. I've since learned more

about the other businesses in the industrial estate, and some of them are better suited to jobs that come our way. I've also learned how important literacy, numeracy and problem-solving skills are. I used to take for granted that people left school with a certain level of common sense. We're finding young people presenting for work with gaps in these areas, and to stay competitive we need staff who can accurately document work, calculate hours and distances, and problem-solve methodically.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE NOW? JW: I'm in the office by 6am. That time is

important to how the whole operation runs. Our official workday starts at 7am, though the team gets in early for a quick August 2026 Motor Trader | 9

catch-up before jobs are allocated. We've got scheduled work, but we're constantly reevaluating timelines as breakdowns come in, because minimising machine downtime for our customers matters. Smoko is around 9.30, lunch at 12.30, and knock-off is 3pm, though you'll rarely find our doors closed before 4. The team is genuinely committed and flexible with their hours when a job needs it. I'll always make the effort to talk to customers outside work hours too, including offering tech support to people up in the Cape. We run fully equipped utes for breakdowns and have four machine bays in the workshop for the bigger jobs.

HOW BIG IS YOUR TEAM? JW: We've got three tradesmen, two

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES YOU'RE FACING RIGHT NOW? JW: Finding tradesmen. We offer

competitive, above-award pay, but we can't compete with the mines on wages alone. We rely on people who want a lifestyle change and are willing to trade FIFO money for local employment.

HOW HAS MTA QUEENSLAND MEMBERSHIP HELPED THE BUSINESS? JW: I've been a member for about 18 months now. It's given us access to industry information and other services. We had our safety management systems updated through a contact from MTA Queensland, which was a real practical benefit.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR WHEN HIRING? apprentices and one office person, and we've JW: Honesty and work ethic matter just as currently got capacity to bring on another tradesman or a fourth-year apprentice looking to return to the Tablelands.

ARE YOU STILL HANDS-ON, OR MOSTLY MANAGING THESE DAYS? JW: I don't think I'll ever willingly leave the

hands-on side of the business. I thrive on fault-finding and diagnostic work. Our staff are skilled and competent, but at the moment I handle the more specialised machining and line-boring work myself, though it's my intention to keep training the team on those tasks too.

much as skills and experience. You can teach a skill and support someone through a gap in their knowledge, but values and ethics need to align with our business from day one. Training is largely done on the job through a gradual-release model: we explain and model a task, work through it together, and once someone's shown competency, they take it on independently.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE NEXT THREE TO FIVE YEARS? JW: Keep improving our operations and efficiency and attract and hire more skilled employees.

“I DON'T THINK I'LL EVER WILLINGLY LEAVE THE HANDS-ON SIDE OF THE BUSINESS. I THRIVE ON FAULT-FINDING AND DIAGNOSTIC WORK.” WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE FUTURE? JW: On a personal level, watching our family grow and supporting my son's passion for machines and tools, whatever trade or career path he ends up choosing.

ANY ADVICE FOR SOMEONE STARTING OUT IN THE TRADE? JW: Be passionate about what you've chosen to do. If you're not, reconsider your path sooner rather than later. Don't shy away from a challenge, treat it as a learning experience, and be proud of what you've achieved by the end.

FAVOURITE MACHINE YOU'VE WORKED ON? JW: The EX8000.

BEST PART OF RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS? JW: Being your own boss. BIGGEST MYTH ABOUT THE TRADE? JW: That if you're not book smart, you should “just do a trade.”

ONE TOOL YOU COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT? JW: My multimeter.

MTA Queensland made sure that automotive workshops remain the only place EVs can be serviced and repaired. Following a review of the Electrical Safety Act, which recommended that only licensed electrical workers service EVs, MTAQ successfully protected the industry’s right to service and repair these vehicles. Our new EV Ready program is your industry-backed, no-nonsense way to get informed, equipped, and connected — without the noise.

MOTOR TRADES ASSOCIATION

HIGH VOLTAGE, HIGH STANDARDS: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE EV READY?

E

LECTRIC VEHICLES (EVS) are rapidly becoming a fixture

on Queensland roads, with more than 58,000 EVs registered as of March 2025 - a number that continues to grow each year. As the market shifts, workshops must be equipped to safely and professionally work on these vehicles. In 2023, the Queensland Government released a Review into the Electrical Safety Act 2002, which included a recommendation that the servicing and repairs of EVs be carried out by licensed electrical workers. MTA Queensland successfully protected the industry’s right to service and repair these vehicles by demonstrating that automotive businesses already have the capability – including a sufficiently trained workforce, as well as the tools, equipment and electrical safe work procedures - to undertake EV servicing and repairs in a safe and compliant manner. As a result, the Government has not pursued the recommendation and supports an industry-led compliance framework - a significant outcome for automotive workshops.

AS EV ADOPTION ACCELERATES, WORKSHOPS MUST NOT ONLY KEEP PACE BUT LEAD THE WAY IN SAFETY, EXPERTISE, AND INNOVATION. INTRODUCING EV READY

In response, MTA Queensland has established EV Ready - a program designed to set a minimum standard for automotive businesses that service and repair electric vehicles. It aims to ensure the automotive industry continues to demonstrate to the Queensland Government that it is the most capable and appropriate sector to perform this work. EV Ready recognises automotive businesses that are: • Properly equipped to handle EVs, • Formally trained to depower and reinitialise EVs, • Committed to industry best practice. Businesses that become EV Ready will be acknowledged as safe and trusted providers for EV servicing and repairs.

Participants will receive an official EV Ready sign to display in their workshop, along with digital assets to help promote their accreditation and build trust with customers.

WHY JOIN EV READY?

As EV adoption accelerates, workshops must not only keep pace but lead the way in safety, expertise, and innovation. By joining EV Ready, you will: • Stand out as a qualified and EV-safe service provider. • Future-proof your business as the EV market grows. • Demonstrate your commitment to safety, professionalism, and innovation. Joining EV Ready is more than just an accreditation - it’s a strategic investment in your business’s long-term success in an evolving automotive landscape.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

To become EV Ready accredited, businesses must demonstrate they are appropriately trained, equipped, and operating in line with national safety standards for EV servicing. This includes having at least one technician who has completed nationally accredited training for the depowering and reinitialising of EVs, or access to a qualified provider, along with meeting appropriate Australian Standards, workplace health and safety requirements, having the correct tools and PPE, and maintaining an EV-appropriate workshop environment. Accreditation is valid for three years and includes an assessment process to confirm compliance. Ongoing accreditation requires businesses to maintain these standards and participate in periodic reviews if requested. The initial accreditation fee is $280 (+GST) for MTA Queensland members and $675 (+GST) for non-members, with a re-accreditation fee of $90.

HOW TO GET STARTED?

Getting EV Ready is simple. Businesses interested in becoming accredited can begin by completing a short Expression of Interest form. Once submitted, MTA Queensland will be in touch to guide you through the next steps — including the assessment process, documentation requirements, and any support needed to help your business meet the EV Ready standard. AUTOMOTIVE BUSINESSES URGED TO ACT ON DRIVEN INITIATIVE GRANTS

A

UTOMOTIVE DEALERSHIPS, SERVICE centres and EV repairers are reminded that applications are currently open for funding through the Federal Government's Dealership and Repairer Initiative for Vehicle Electrification Nationally (DRIVEN) Program. The DRIVEN Charger Grant Stream is making $20 million available to support the installation of new public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at eligible automotive businesses across Australia. The program recognises the increasingly important role dealerships, service centres and repairers will play as Australia's vehicle fleet becomes more electrified and aims to expand access to charging infrastructure. Funding is intended to support new charging stations at automotive premises, encourage greater availability of charging infrastructure in regional areas and assist businesses interested in hosting public chargers. The program also seeks to facilitate partnerships between automotive businesses and EV charging operators.

Eligible businesses considering applying are encouraged to begin preparing their applications as soon as possible, with applications closing at 5pm on August 28. Starting the process early will give applicants time to review their submission, ensure all required attachments and supporting documents have been included, and identify any missing information or technical and administrative issues that may need to be resolved. Businesses still working through potential project arrangements can also make use of the DRIVEN Register of Interest for Site Hosts. The register has been established to help connect grant applicants with automotive dealerships and EV repair businesses interested in hosting EV charging infrastructure and may be useful for businesses or charging operators still looking to establish suitable partnerships. With EV numbers continuing to grow and charging infrastructure becoming an increasingly important part of Australia's transport network, the DRIVEN Charger Grant Stream represents an opportunity for automotive businesses to invest in infrastructure that could support both their customers and the wider community. Businesses requiring further information about eligibility, grant requirements or the application process can consult the Business Grants Hub FAQs or contact the Business Grants Hub team through the business.gov.au website contacts page. T 4.30 EVERY morning, long before the first customers arrive at Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service, Melinda Bossley is starting her day. With husband Matt, she begins with a workout, then a quick swim, before getting their young son ready for school. By 7am, the duo are at the workshop, getting ready for another busy day at their business in the small coastal town 40km east of Rockhampton. And it almost certainly will be a busy day. As co-owner of Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service, Melinda is always on the go. While Matt oversees the workshop's technical operations, she is driving the elements that every business must have. Marketing, human resources, business development, workplace culture and strategic planning are all part of her role, as is helping out in the front office when needed. Plus, if required, she’ll

If my husband steps out, I run the workshop and assist wherever I can,” she says. A business owner wearing multiple hats is not uncommon, of course, but in Melinda’s case it is a reflection too of the business she has helped to build. The workshop has earned a reputation for its service and being able to tackle any job

Melinda Bossley that rolls through its doors. "We do everything from puncture repair to engine rebuilds and services,” she says. “And there's no limit to what type of cars we do. We do European cars. We do from Toyotas to Porsches to Mercedes. We cover everything and all our staff members get the same experience. Gearboxes, services, anything you can think of, we cover it.” For most people, running and developing a successful business might be enough, but Melinda's enthusiasm for the automotive industry sees her influence extend well beyond the workshop. In addition to co-owning Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service, she serves as MTA Queensland's Central Queensland representative and sits on the Association's Board of Directors. It's a role that helps her give regional automotive businesses a voice at the state level. Passionate about strengthening the industry, she is a strong advocate August 2026 Motor Trader | 25

for workforce development, business improvement and encouraging more women to pursue careers in automotive.

A DIFFERENT ROAD

Melinda's path to the automotive industry was unconventional, bringing together experience in accounting, business development, fleet management and project management before combining her skills with her husband's automotive expertise. Born in Brisbane, she spent much of her childhood in the Netherlands after her parents moved overseas when she was six years old. Returning to Australia as a young adult, she initially pursued a career in accounting before moving into business development and eventually fleet management with Boom Logistics, overseeing vehicles operating throughout Queensland's Bowen Basin. From there she became a project manager involved in transitioning Sunwater assets to the Fairbairn Irrigation Network near Emerald. It was while doing this role that she met Matt – an encounter that not only changed

Melinda Bossley with husband Matt

her personal life but her professional one as well. The duo combined their respective strengths seven years ago to grow Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service into one of Central Queensland's most respected independent workshops. While Melinda's arrival in the automotive industry as a business owner came relatively recently, it seems likely she was always destined to end there. Cars fascinated her from an early age. Growing up, weekends often meant visiting dealerships with her father to look at new vehicles, and if there were ever an issue with a car and something needed repairing, she was always there, keen to understand how things worked. That curiosity gradually evolved into a genuine passion for the industry itself and today, while she isn't the one with her head buried in an engine bay, Melinda has become every bit as passionate about the broader business of automotive – working to help businesses grow, build strong teams and create workplaces where people genuinely enjoy coming to work.

BUILDING MORE THAN A BUSINESS

Ask Melinda what business development means, and she doesn't begin by talking about profit, as important as that is. Instead, she talks about people. For her, growing a business means creating a workplace where staff feel valued, customers feel welcome and there is always continuous improvement.

“WE LOVE COMING TO WORK IN THE MORNING AND OPENING THE ROLLER DOORS. WE’RE PROUD OF WHAT WE'VE ACHIEVED AND WHAT WE'RE WORKING TOWARDS.”

That philosophy is evident at Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service. Recently, driven by Melinda, the business has undergone a complete rebrand, including installing new signage - for anyone who needs work done and finds themselves in Emu Park it’s the Big Blue Shed at the top of Henry Street! Work has also been done on workplace culture and to make the workshop more efficient through the refinement of systems and processes. The objective is simple - keep improving and ensuring that everything contributes to the customer experience. The workshop serves a small town of about 2,500 people, yet its reputation extends well beyond Emu Park itself. From across the Capricorn Coast and Rockhampton region customers have been returning for years, creating real, personal relationships. For Melinda, that's part of running a genuine community business. They know generations of some families and those relationships are a large part of the reason Melinda and Matt genuinely enjoy what they do. "We love running our own business,” says Melinda. “We love coming to work in the morning and opening the roller doors. We’re proud of what we've achieved and what we're working towards. We always strive to improve ourselves and it's very

rewarding when you hit those points. "And it's rewarding when a customer leaves and you get great feedback . . . it’s a great feeling to know that you can contribute to the community in such an impactful way."

HELPING SHAPE THE FUTURE

While building a successful regional workshop is a rewarding challenge, Melinda is equally passionate about helping strengthen the automotive industry beyond the boundaries of Emu Park. That commitment led her to seek election as Central Queensland's representative on the MTA Queensland Board, where she seeks to help ensure regional businesses have a stronger voice in decisions affecting the industry. Having worked in large corporate organisations in a variety of roles, Melinda August 2026 Motor Trader | 27

understands the different challenges faced by smaller automotive businesses. Many are run by small family teams juggling everything from customer service and staffing to workplace health and safety, human resources and compliance, often without dedicated admin support. For Melinda, sharing her experience across all those areas is one way she can help those businesses continue tothrive, and being part of the MTA Queensland Board provides an opportunity to advocate for them. Her appointment to the Board is also personally significant. It is recognition that women have an increasingly important role to play in shaping the future of Australia's automotive industry. "You can have real impact,” she says. “It gives me the opportunity to be a voice for other businesses about their concerns and about our region. “It is one of the most rewarding parts for me within my career in the automotive industry,” she adds. “To be able to have that voice, as a female, I'm very, very proud. I love everything they stand for, and it's a great opportunity."

“I DEFINITELY ENCOURAGE YOUNG WOMEN TO LOOK AT THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY AS A CAREER CHOICE . . . IF IT'S SOMETHING YOU'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT, JUST DON'T LET ANYTHING STOP YOU AND GO FOR IT.” CHANGING PERCEPTIONS

Melinda has spent much of her working life in industries traditionally dominated by men and has never allowed gender to define her career. Instead, she has focused on doing her job well and building a reputation based on performance. From coordinating heavy equipment across Queensland's mining regions to helping lead a thriving automotive business, her confidence comes from August 2026 Motor Trader | 29

preparation and a willingness to keep improving. Looking back, she says she simply refused to doubt herself, and having women working across all aspects of the automotive industry just makes sense. She is quick to point out that diversity isn't about replacing one perspective with another, but about strengthening businesses by bringing together different experiences, different approaches and different ways of solving problems. "Females and males look at things differently . . .” she says. “I think that you see that a lot within businesses where you can say the female touch has come in and it's made that bit of difference. "And I think that's something women can be very proud of - of being able to contribute to such a large industry, have a strong voice, and also show the change flowing through the industry." Her advice to young women considering automotive as a career is straightforward. She emphasises the amazing variety of roles in the industry and also insists that there is a place for everyone in the workshop and ‘on the spanners.’ "If I could give my younger self any advice, it would be 'just to go for it'. Don't let anything hold you back. And if you feel that you don't know everything, just be

open to learn it. Be eager to learn and realise that the traditional way is not always the only way," she says. "I definitely encourage young women to look at the automotive industry as a career choice . . . if it's something you're passionate about, just don't let anything stop you and go for it." Melinda is equally enthusiastic about initiatives such as MTA Queensland's Auto Women program, believing they provide valuable opportunities for women to connect, learn from one another and build supportive professional networks. "I think the initiatives that MTA Queensland has put out there such as Auto Women are fantastic,” she says. “It is a great way to get women within

the industry to have events and seminars, to support each other, and learn from each other. It’s a fantastic initiative. "

A PASSION THAT CONTINUES TO GROW

Spend enough time around the auto industry and you’ll find yourself around the exotic and the expensive – cars that anyone would love to own. Melinda admits that if money were no object, a Bugatti would be hard to resist, but her years with Matt working on vehicles and building their business have also reinforced the idea that practicality matters. That's why her own driveway is home to a 2025 Kia Carnival – a family mover that doubles as the workshop's customer courtesy vehicle. With just one child, she laughs that at the thought they should own a people mover, but it's perfect for ferrying customers around town and it’s a pretty smart and stylish bit of kit. “I actually feel a little bit like gangster in it, even though it is a ‘mummy’ car!” Melinda says with a laugh. This down-to-earth approach says much about Melinda. Practical and innovative

thinking are principles she uses when choosing a vehicle and in the way she approaches business. And seven years after Melinda and Matt began building Emu Park Automotive and Tyre Service together, the business continues to evolve. The workshop has expanded, been rebranded and is steadily growing alongside the community it serves, and Melinda has, through her relationship with MTA Queensland, stretched to become a voice for the industry in her region. Her passion for automotive is obvious, and she believes the industry offers opportunities unlike almost any other. "I think that is an extremely versatile industry, and I think that's why I love it so much,” she says. “No one day is the same, and you can implement any skill you have and contribute massively CLICK to the industry. BYD says the Seal 6 operates as an electric vehicle for much of its daily driving - the electric motor drives the front wheels for most driving scenarios, while the petrol engine is deployed selectively operating only when it can do so with maximum efficiency. The Seal 6 Sedan combines the hybrid system with a 10kWh Blade Battery, delivering a claimed electric-only range of 55km (WLTP). Fuel consumption is rated at just 1.1L/100km (NEDC test cycle).

The Touring Premium receives a larger 19kWh battery that nearly doubles electric-only range to a claimed 100km while lowering combined fuel consumption to 0.8L/100km. BYD says that both models have completed Australian validation testing covering more than 1000km using a full battery charge and a full 65-litre fuel tank. WE KEEP OUR LOCAL PEOPLE - NOT JUST OF GLADSTONE BUT OF CENTRAL QUEENSLAND - ON THE ROAD BY SUPPLYING THEM A VEHICLE THAT'S FIT FOR THEIR PURPOSE . . .” Brad And Les Anderson, co-directors of Andersons Auto City and the third generation of the family to run the business and other contributions, and provided careers for hundreds of people, some of whom have spent decades, entire careers, with the business - a reflection of the values and enduring relationships that have been part of the Andersons Auto City story since Harold first opened its doors. Today, with Harold’s grandsons Les and Brad Anderson at the helm, the dealership

employs 63 people; services around 50 vehicles every day; represents Mazda, Mitsubishi, MG and LDV; and is a service agent for RAM. It is guided by a philosophy developed decades ago: Create customers for life. That idea, and the pursuit of delivering products and a service that the community can trust, explains why customers regularly travel hundreds of kilometres - from Rockhampton, Biloela, Emerald and beyond - to buy from, and have their August 2026 Motor Trader | 43

vehicles serviced at, Andersons Auto City. “We offer personal service and we're a family company that's been around a long time,” said Les. “I have always said that we're in the transport industry. We keep our local people - not just of Gladstone but of Central Queensland - on the road by supplying them a vehicle that's fit for their purpose . . .” It’s a simple philosophy. Direct and to the point. And it has worked. Seven decades in business proves that.

IN THE BEGINNING The origins of Andersons Auto City stretch back to the 1930s, when the business, then known as Port Curtis Motors, sold brands such as Chevrolet and Maple Leaf trucks. By the early 1950s, its owners were looking to sell and Harold Anderson entered the story. While he had grown up in Gladstone, Harold had been living for years in Nambour, on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, where he and his brother had built a successful business portfolio that included a real estate agency, a service station and two movie theatres. However, when the opportunity arose to return to Gladstone and buy Port Curtis Motors, he grabbed it and on June 1st, 1953, Harold, his wife and their two sons returned to the town, beginning the Anderson family's enduring association with the dealership. Back then, Gladstone was a very different place to the industrial city it is now. Some 45,000 people live there today, and it is one of the world’s great resource export terminals. 70 years ago, it was somewhat different. "There would've only been two or three thousand people here," says Les. "There was no heavy industry. There was just the meatworks. And everyone knew everybody." The original Anderson’s dealership stood in Tank Street, right in the middle of town, and it remained there for nearly 20 years until 1971 when the business moved a 44 | Motor Trader August 2026

WHEN THE OPPORTUNITY AROSE TO RETURN TO GLADSTONE AND BUY PORT CURTIS MOTORS, HE SNAPPED IT UP . . . couple of kilometres to Yarron Street, to a site where it is still located and which - after much investment over the years – now occupies 16,000 square metres. Harold was joined in the business by his sons Colin and John and at different periods the family sold motorcycles, caravans, boats and even whitegoods before deciding to concentrate solely on motor vehicles. A General Motors and Holden dealer from the outset, the business gradually added more franchises, most notably the Mazda and Mitsubishi franchises in the early 1980s.

BRAND EXPANSION Those brands became the cornerstone of the dealership for decades and would remain so until Holden’s demise. With Holden's departure, there was

“a showroom to fill” and Les and Brad went searching for other brands to represent. They were pointed in the direction of LDV and MG. The search came at an awkward time but proved to be a smart move. “This all happened during COVID, in 2020, and neither brand could send a representative here, so we did Brad and Les, with Dad John and an Opel Calibra it all remotely. It was a bizarre time,” says Les. “But we picked up both and and 1953 FJ Holden - a car the family still owns today. working with them is great . . .” The reception for these brands in the region has been solid. “They do fit a demographic. Both brands fit a budget,” says Les. “There’s the 4WD dual-cab T60 which is a good budget vehicle; and with MG we have really good budget vehicles from $20,000 to $30,000 . . . those passenger cars from MG filled a void for us. We had lost that with Holden.” Working with the Chinese brands means accessing not only quality budget vehicles, but bringing cutting-edge electrification tech to the local market. “We have the MG4 Urban [EV] at $31,990 and I never thought that we were going to see an electric car around that price judging by what they were not all that long ago,” says Les. “And we now have a really good range of electric cars, hybrids and super hybrids,” adds Brad. “The pricing is good and the product is good, and Mazda now has a couple of electric vehicles coming, as does Mitsubishi.”

A FAMILY AFFAIR For Brad and Les, joining the family business and following in their grandfather’s and father’s footsteps was probably inevitable. Brad, who now oversees the Mitsubishi brand and works with Les on LDV and the used-vehicle part of the business - joined the company in 1985 and headed initially towards the mechanical side of things. “I used to come in on Saturdays with dad and tinker in the workshop," he says. "After high school I had about four weeks off then turned up here and started my [light vehicle] apprenticeship. I was in the workshop for about 8 years and then came out into sales.” While it’s been a few years since he's worked on the tools, Brad says he keeps his eye in from time to time, although the experience and knowledge of his team doesn’t really require it. “I give advice quite regularly . . . and sometimes it works!” he says with a chuckle. “I haven’t dropped in any oil or spun a filter in a long time . . . and we are lucky with the depth in our workshop . . . We have knowledge in that workshop that goes back years. Our foreman, Steven, has 35 years here. If it’s broken, he can fix it!” Les took a different path and, for a short while at least, there was the prospect of him building a career elsewhere. "I went to university and did a business degree, and I actually wasn't planning on coming into the business,” he says. “I was home for the holidays and dad said that if I was interested in coming in after I finished my degree, I should come and talk to him. About midway through my degree I realised . . . it just made complete sense to come in.”

MORE THAN A DEALERSHIP Les and Brad are co-directors of the business and their collaborative approach is a hallmark of Andersons Auto City. The success of the business isn't measured only by the number of vehicles sold, but by the relationships it has built. For generations, the business has supported sporting clubs, charities, schools and community organisations throughout the region, not because it is expected of a successful dealership, but because the family believes they have a responsibility to give something back. "The community supports us as a family business and we support them back,"says Brad. 46 | Motor Trader August 2026

“THE COMMUNITY SUPPORTS US AS A FAMILY BUSINESS AND WE SUPPORT THEM BACK . . .” It is a philosophy that has become second nature. "We've always been involved," adds Les. "Lots of regional businesses do the same thing and it's absolutely important. People knock on the door all the time or send us an email asking whether we'd be interested in helping with something. Sometimes it's only a small amount that we can assist with, but if we can do that, that's great for everybody." The commitment to community support is mirrored in how the brothers have researched the industry’s evolution and prepared for the current era of change. While much of the national conversation centres on electrification and how

businesses should be able to work on electrified vehicles, Andersons Auto City has been investing in new tech for years. The dealership has installed electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, invested in specialist equipment, and ensured technicians receive the training required to safely work on high-voltage vehicles. "We started investing when we picked up MG and LDV because LDV already had electric vans," explains Brad. "We had to make those decisions about infrastructure and training." The dealership also worked closely with MTA Queensland to deliver nationally recognised EV training onsite. "MTA Queensland were fantastic," adds Brad. "They actually came to Gladstone and delivered training here so we could get our technicians accredited without sending everyone away." Just as significant as embracing

technological change has been tackling the seemingly universal challenge of finding skilled technicians. It’s another area in which Les and Brad have had success and done so with some lateral thinking. "20 years ago we brought five Filipino technicians over," says Brad. "We still have two of them with us today. They're beautiful blokes and we helped bring their families over as well." The dealership also recruited internationally from Africa while continuing to invest heavily in appealing to local apprentices. "Every year, we always put on first-year apprentices," says Les. "We go into the high schools, advertise on social media and through SEEK, and we're always looking for good people." Importantly, apprentices aren't simply viewed as labour. The Andersons see them as the next custodians of the business

August 2026 Motor Trader | 47

and it’s exciting to see that the dealership is creating some solid opportunities for women in the workshop. Currently there are two female technicians and one female second-year apprentice. Supporting these apprentices and technicians in their careers is important to Les and Brad, and one of their proudest achievements is with regards to the extraordinary loyalty of their employees. There are many who have clocked up a decade and more with the business, but a handful have gone much, much further. "We had a couple of guys retire in the last few years who both were at 50 years!" says Brad. "One was a mechanic all the way through, the other started as a motorcycle mechanic when we had Honda motorbikes and BSA." It’s unlikely there are many businesses anywhere, in any industry, that can make a similar claim.

“The four of them live in Brisbane. They are spreading their wings elsewhere, so this will probably end with the third generation,” says Les. Whether or not that is the case, the truth remains that the Andersons Auto City legacy - and, by extension, the legacy of the Anderson family - extends far beyond the vehicles it has sold and serviced. Over the decades, the business has provided a service to the community as well as careers and financial security to hundreds of employees. And the Anderson story is interwoven with the story of Gladstone itself. Harold was an Alderman on the Gladstone Town Council for three decades, helping to shepherd and guide the town THE STORY CONTINUES . . . through bust and boom as it evolved into Although the Anderson family's the export powerhouse hub it is today. He stewardship of the dealership has spanned would have been proud, say his grandsons, three generations, the next chapter of the to see how the town and the business has dealership’s story will likely not be written by continued to evolve and grow. the fourth, as the younger generation of the “I think he would be pretty happy,” family has found fulfilment in careers says Les with a smile. “And he’d CLICK TO beyond the automotive trade. RECORD JULY KEEPS AUSTRALIA'S NEW-CAR MARKET ON A ROLL AS EV DEMAND ACCELERATES

A

USTRALIA'S NEW-VEHICLE market has continued its remarkable run in 2026, posting the strongest July sales result on record as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) again accounted for more than one in every five new vehicles delivered. According to VFACTS data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) a total of 103,656 new vehicles was sold during July, edging past the previous July record of 103,097 set in 2025. Together with data on Tesla and Polestar from the Electric Vehicle Council, 108,577 vehicles were delivered. The result follows a record-breaking June. The latest figures also underline the continuing rapid growth of electrified vehicles, with 23,510 battery electric vehicles (BEVs) delivered during the month. BEVs represented 21.7 per cent of the market in July, marking the second consecutive month in which they have accounted for more than one-fifth of the Australian market. The momentum has been strong across the year, with Australians purchasing 127,244 battery electric vehicles from all reporting sources. That represents 17.3 per cent of all new vehicles sold so far this year, highlighting the pace at which consumers are embracing zero-emission motoring. FCAI chief executive Tony Weber said the July result reflected the resilience of Australia's automotive market in challenging economic conditions. "July was another outstanding month for Australian newvehicle sales and delivered the best July result on record," Mr Weber said in a media release. "This strength extended to battery electric vehicles, which accounted for more than one in five new vehicle sales." Mr Weber said the rapid rise in electric vehicle sales was encouraging but warned that Australia's charging infrastructure would need to expand quickly to keep pace with demand. "There is a risk that the rapid increase in electric vehicle uptake in 2026 will outpace the supply of public charging infrastructure 68 | Motor Trader August 2026

“GOVERNMENTS AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR MUST WORK TOGETHER TO ENSURE THAT THE PUBLIC CHARGING NETWORK MEETS GROWING DEMAND, PARTICULARLY IN REGIONAL AREAS AND FOR MOTORISTS WHO DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO CHARGING AT HOME.” Governments and the private sector must work together to ensure that the public charging network meets growing demand, particularly in regional areas and for motorists who do not have access to charging at home." He said dependable charging infrastructure would be essential to sustaining consumer confidence as electric vehicles became an increasingly significant part of the national fleet. "Accessible and dependable charging will be critical to maintaining consumer confidence as electric vehicles become a larger part of Australia's new-vehicle fleet." The July figures continue one of the most significant shifts seen in Australia's automotive market, with electric vehicles moving from a niche segment to a mainstream purchasing choice in a relatively short period. Strong competition between manufacturers, the arrival of a growing number of affordable electric models and continued expansion of model ranges across passenger cars, SUVs and light commercial vehicles have all contributed to rising demand throughout 2026. After a close-run race in June, July saw Toyota regain

momentum and put plenty of sales daylight between it and its nearest competitor. Last month, BYD came close to dethroning the Japanese giant in sales nationally. However, July saw Toyota hit 20,409 sales with BYD a comfortable second, but way behind, with 7,857 sales. Ford took third spot for the month (6,553) with Kia in fourth (6,458) and Mazda in fifth (6,400). Toyota also took the top two spots in VFACTS best-selling models list for July, with the Rav 4 (5564 sales) and the Hilux (4721) topping the chart. The Ford Ranger was in third spot (4042) with the BYD Sealion 7 in fourth (2548) and the Chery Tiggo 4 in fifth (2156). Data from the Electric Vehicle Council Sales Report -

which reports on sales information from Tesla and Polestar – saw Tesla selling 4778 units - including 4,644 Model Ys, making it number three in the best-selling models list for the month. Workplace relations

NEW FAIR WORK COURT ON THE WAY: IS YOUR PAYROLL READY? WHAT HAS THE GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCED? On 23 July 2026, the Federal Government announced that it will establish a new BEN SWAN Fair Work Court. DIRECTOR WORKPLACE The aim is to give RELATIONS employees a faster, simpler and less expensive way to resolve workplace disputes, particularly those concerning wage underpayment claims. The proposed Court would have specialist workplace relations judges and work closely with the Fair Work Commission. The Government says some current disputes take more than two years and can cost more to pursue than the amount claimed. For now, the detail that the Government has provided is limited. The Court is not yet operating. Its precise jurisdiction, procedures, appeal arrangements and relationship with existing federal courts are still to be settled through consultation. The Fair Work Commission will retain its central role as the workplace tribunal dealing with unfair dismissal, general protections, minimum award conditions and agreementmaking. For business, the practical message is already clear: if wage claims become easier and cheaper to pursue, payroll mistakes may become more likely to be identified, challenged and examined. 70 | Motor Trader August 2026

WHERE DO AUTOMOTIVE PAYROLL ERRORS USUALLY HIDE? Most underpayments are not caused by a business owner deliberately shortchanging staff. They commonly start with an incorrect assumption that sits unnoticed in payroll for months or even years. In an automotive business, the risk points are familiar. Has each mechanic, apprentice, detailer, parts employee, salesperson and administration employee been placed under the right award and classification? Has an apprentice progressed to the correct stage? Are overtime, Saturday work, public holidays, annual leave loading and applicable allowances being handled correctly? Do not assume that paying “above award” answers every question. A higher hourly rate or salary does not automatically absorb overtime, penalties, loadings or allowances. Payroll software will calculate whatever it has been programmed to calculate - even when the underlying rule is wrong.

WHAT SHOULD A PAYROLL AUDIT COVER? Start by mapping each employee to the correct industrial instrument and classification based on the work actually performed, not simply the job title. For many Queensland automotive businesses, this will mean checking the Vehicle Repair, Services and Retail Award 2020 and potentially the Clerks - Private Sector Award 2020.

Test ordinary hours, overtime triggers, weekend and public holiday penalties, allowances, leave loading, junior and apprentice rates, superannuation and final payments. Include salaried employees. Reconstruct what they would have earned under the award for their actual hours and compare it with the salary paid. A salary that looks generous across 38 hours may look quite different after regular overtime or Saturday work is included. A sensible routine is a full audit at least annually, supported by quarterly spot checks. Also review payroll whenever award rates change, duties or rosters alter, a new

Communicate clearly, make the required back-payments promptly and correct the system that caused the error. The proposed Fair Work Court does not create new payment obligations. It may, however, make existing obligations easier to enforce by employees. For a small automotive business, a periodic payroll check is far cheaper and less disruptive than discovering the problem in a court claim.

Apprentice of the Month: July 2026 The MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month is proudly sponsored by CareSuper

APPRENTICE: TYLER WHITFIELD APPRENTICESHIP: LIGHT VEHICLE MECHANICAL WORKPLACE: BMAS BILOELA

T

YLER WHITFIELD IS THE MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for July 2026. Described by his employer as an apprentice ‘who consistently demonstrates the professionalism, initiative and technical ability that represent the future of the automotive industry’ and by his MTA Institute trainer as someone who is dedicated to his trade and who ‘constantly strives to achieve his best,’ the 20-year-old third-year, light vehicle mechanical apprentice at BMAS Biloela has built a reputation for his outstanding work ethic, ability and commitment to learning. Whether rebuilding machinery, servicing trucks or cars, mentoring fellow apprentices or spending weekends working on friends' vehicles and classic cars, Tyler has proven to be an outstanding apprentice and employee. Tyler's journey into the trade began while he was still at school. After completing work experience with BMAS, his enthusiasm and potential quickly impressed the team. "I did some work experience through school for one week and they liked me that much they kept me on," he said. "I came back a couple more times and then they offered me an apprenticeship." For Tyler, becoming a mechanic was probably always on the cards - he grew up surrounded by engines, machinery and restoration projects - and he developed a fascination with all things mechanical long before he entered the workshop as an apprentice. His enthusiasm, combined with an unwavering commitment to learning and a willingness to tackle any challenge, saw him leave school after Year 11 to pursue his automotive dream. "It was always going to happen," said Tyler. "My family were all into mechanics and played around with that sort of thing their entire lives, and I grew up in it. They built cars and everything back when they were younger, and my grandparents were farmers as well." That upbringing saw Tyler learn the basics of mechanical 76 | Motor Trader August 2026

work at an early age and he would end up helping his dad do a ground-up restoration of an XG Falcon while he was still at school. He has continued that passion for projects – in his spare time, he is currently tackling a similarly complete restoration job of an 80 Series Toyota LandCruiser. While Tyler is completing a light vehicle mechanical apprenticeship, his experience at BMAS has exposed him to far more than passenger vehicles. The workshop services everything from small engines and agricultural equipment through to heavy trucks and other machinery, giving him the opportunity to develop an exceptionally broad range of skills. His employers also encourage him to take the many training opportunities that are available. "I do anything and everything I can get hold of," said Tyler of the training he has undertaken. "And the range of experience I can get from doing the different training and working on different things will help me down the line." That appetite for learning has seen him complete his HR truck licence, High Risk Forklift Licence, Advanced First Aid certification and Test and Tag accreditation, while he has also undertaken specialised Massey Ferguson technical training to achieve Level 1 technician accreditation. Of all the jobs he does, Tyler said he particularly enjoys working on heavy vehicles. "Bigger trucks. Heavy trucks," he said. "I don't really know what the appeal is. I just enjoy them a lot more. The bigger the better!" He is also keen to continue expanding his knowledge as vehicle technology evolves. "We do see hybrids but not too many fully electric vehicles, but I would be interested in training to be able to work on them as well," he said. Looking ahead, Tyler is keen to continue his work with BMAS Biloela and added that he has already been having discussions about gaining his heavy commercial vehicle mechanical technology qualification. "Working at BMAS is great because they're always offering more training," he said. And looking way down the track, CLICK TO VISIT there’s the ambition to one day THE BMAS operate his own business. BILOELA WEBSITE “In the long run, that is what I would like to do,” he said.
