A MEMO FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR THOMAS FARO
Dear Members:
MSYSA had two National Champions last summer—congratulations to the Michigan Stars U14 Boys and Michigan Rangers 17G teams! In addition, the Nationals Macomb U19B team finished as finalists at the US Youth Soccer National President’s Cup!
Last summer, MSYSA updated several rules in preparation for this year’s tryout cycle. Clubs with teams in “Elite” platforms/programs may now conduct early tryouts. “Elite” teams are those participating in USYS National League, NAL, and MSYSA’s Director’s Academy. This adjustment helps level the playing field by allowing these clubs to align with other organizations (MLS Next, GA, ENCL, USL, EA, etc.) that already conduct early tryouts. It also supports a longer, more thoughtful tryout process, reducing stress for players and families—particularly those not pursuing or not selected for “Elite”-level teams. These players can now focus on “Premier/Select” tryouts in mid June. Additionally, this change allows many clubs not impacted by Elite platforms to extend their spring seasons by up to one week, if desired.
“Premier/Select” teams include those participating in MSPSP (including GLPL), CASL, Great Lakes Co-Ed, GVSA, MMYSL, MSDSL, MYSL, WMYSA, and WSSL, as well as local club-run Select and Recreational Travel leagues. These teams remain subject to the official tryout date.
MSYSA also now permits players and families to commit, sign, and register with their current club at any point during the seasonal year for the upcoming year. This policy was temporarily introduced during COVID, when traditional tryouts could not be held, and received very positive feedback. Reintroducing this option supports club continuity—especially for smaller, non-elite programs—by allowing earlier commitments. It also gives families the flexibility to remain with their current club if they are satisfied, while avoiding the stress of attending multiple tryouts in a short period.
As a reminder, MSYSA will transition to an age group formation cycle based on the School Year (August 1–July 31) beginning with the Fall 2026–Spring 2027 seasonal year. The current Birth Year cycle (January 1–December 31) will remain in effect through the Spring 2026 season. For questions regarding these updates, please visit www.michiganyouthsoccer.org.
Sincerely,
Thomas K. Faro Executive Director stateoffice@michiganyouthsoccer.org
