On page 15 of this issue of Dimensions, we announce a proposal to build a 780-car parking structure into the hillside north of the Kern Center. On top of the structure, and at ground level across the street from the Kern Center, is a proposed athletic field. Drs. Robert and Patricia Kern have offered to support most of this proposed addition to the MSOE campus, and we are awed by their generosity. Their gift makes it possible for us to propose 500 more parking spaces than we need to help spur business development in the Park East corridor. The success of this project requires the support of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, the Milwaukee Common Council, the Mayor, the County Executive and the cooperation of the Marshall & Ilsley Corporation. When our proposal is acted upon by these parties we will certainly inform our MSOE community of the final outcome. My current comments are an appreciative recognition of the support we have already received. MSOE is held in very high esteem by Milwaukeearea citizens and elected officials. In general, people regard MSOE as a valuable entity and are supportive of those things that help us better serve our students. They recognize the need for our graduates and the roles our graduates play as job creators. Most also recognize how our campus community adds to the vibrancy of downtown Milwaukee by its very presence. MSOE has much of which to be proud. It is gratifying to see such a very positive initial response to our proposal. Its success will benefit all those interested in the development of downtown Milwaukee and in MSOE’s continuing success.

Balancing act Dr. Alan Ruud ’69, P.E., new Chairman of the MSOE Board of Regents; Chairman and CEO of Ruud Lighting
“You need to hire people who complement your skills and you need to give them responsibility and let them do their job.” Ruud attributes his success in part to surrounding himself with great people. “Without good people you really can’t accomplish much. You need to hire people who complement your skills and you need to give them responsibility and let them do their job,” said Ruud. He looks for employees who are motivated, passionate about what they do and who want to contribute to the organization. Ruud graduated from MSOE with a degree in electrical engineering. He credits the university with teaching him the discipline and problem-solving skills that he still uses today. He served as the president of the MSOE Alumni Association from 1973 to 1974, received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree from MSOE in 1998 and was named the Distinguished Alumnus of
the Year in 2008. Most recently he was named chairman of the MSOE Board of Regents, the first MSOE alumnus to hold this position. “I am honored to be involved and to participate. Many people have committed tremendous resources to MSOE, such as Drs. Kerns, Dr. Grohmann and Dr. Cudahy, and seeing their involvement inspires me,” said Ruud. In his spare time, Ruud enjoys traveling and golfing and even, he admits, working. He also pilots most of his own flights, both domestic and international. Ruud has two grown children and seven grandchildren. His wife Patty has three grown children, two of whom are stationed in Afghanistan with the Air Force.

Dr. Alan Ruud likes his job. So much so, in fact, that it’s sometimes difficult for him to stop working. “When you enjoy your job, it’s hard to balance business with personal time. That’s one of my biggest challenges,” said Ruud. Ruud is chairman and CEO of Ruud Lighting in Racine, Wis., a company he founded in 1982 out of his garage. It started as a manufacturer and worldwide direct marketer of industrial, commercial and residential lighting fixtures, but today more than half of the business is comprised of LED lighting fixtures sold worldwide.
Dr. Alan Ruud’s Tips for Success 1. If something is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. If you can’t take the time to do it right, don’t even bother. 2. Consider working awhile before pursuing a master’s degree. The education will be more meaningful. 3. Entrepreneurs are generally too optimistic, so if you want to start your own business you have to be prepared for the worst and be persistent in achieving your objectives.

MSOE welcomes new Chairman, Regents Dr. Alan J. Ruud ’69 P.E., chairman and CEO of Ruud Lighting Inc. in Racine, Wis., has been named the new chairman of the MSOE Board of Regents. He replaces Dr. John A. Mellowes, chairman and CEO of Charter Manufacturing Co. Inc., who served as chairman of the Board of Regents for three years. See page 3 for a profile of Ruud. The following individuals have been elected to the Board of Regents: Michael W. Major, Ph.D., D. Sc. is president and CEO of Cambridge Major Laboratories (CML) Inc., Germantown, Wis., which provides advanced chemistry services to the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Major began his career at the University of Lodz in Poland where he was a tenured professor of organic chemistry; the youngest to achieve the title in university history. In 2009 Major was appointed to the Advisory Board of the Cardiovascular Center at Medical College of Wisconsin and to the UW-Milwaukee Research Foundation Board of Directors. In 2004 Major won the honor of Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Life Sciences in the State of Wisconsin. Gary J. Vroman ’91 is president and CEO of Ladish Co. Inc., located in Cudahy, Wis. Vroman began his career at Ladish as a sales engineer and was successively promoted to more responsible positions in the sales department before becoming vice president of sales in 1996. Vroman has overseen the company’s management of cyclical demand in the aerospace and industrial forging markets, including the current up-cycle. He brings a focus on strong customer service to the position. He holds a bachelor’s degree in general engineering from the University of Illinois and a master’s degree in engineering management from MSOE.

Faculty awards presented The Falk Engineering Educator Award was presented to Dr. Jeffrey LaMack ’97, assistant professor of biomedical engineering in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. The award is given annually to a full-time faculty member with less than seven years of experience. It is a testament to exemplary dedication and performance. Dr. David Dreifus, adjunct assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department, received the Johnson Controls Award, presented to outstanding part-time faculty. The award was inspired by Robert C. Moore, a long-time faculty member in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.
MSOE is among the best MSOE earned the 11th spot on U.S.News & World Report’s 2011 list of Best Undergraduate Colleges in the Midwest. MSOE also was ranked 11th in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs category among engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s. The rankings compare more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools on a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence, including peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, financial resources and alumni giving. MSOE was named one of America’s Best Colleges by Forbes on its third annual list, which includes the top nine percent of accredited postsecondary institutions in the U.S. MSOE has been on the list every year since Forbes began ranking colleges and universities in 2008. The Princeton Review selected MSOE as one of the best colleges and universities in the Midwest. Only 152 institutions were included on the education services company’s “Best in the Midwest” list.
Educator of the Year
For the ninth consecutive year, MSOE’s Design-Build Team took first place in the Associated Schools of Construction Region III Student Competition. For the competition, the team had 18 hours to completely design and estimate the costs of a $40 million Native American Gaming facility in the St. Louis area, and also develop and deliver a verbal presentation to judges from the McCarthy Building Co. They competed against 15 large Midwestern universities. Assistant Professor Blake Wentz and Associate Professor Robert Lemke ’99 were the team coaches. MSOE’s Commercial Team also competed at the event and took third place. They were coached by Assistant Professor Dr. Jeong Woo.
Robert Lemke ’99, associate professor in the Architectural Engineering and Building Construction Department, was named Educator of the Year by Wisconsin Builder magazine. The magazine recognized Lemke along with others throughout the state for their contribution to the construction industry. Alumni who were recognized include Alice Westphal ’01, senior engineer with M.A. Mortenson Co., Engineer of the Year, and Ben Kossow ’00, division manager with Riley Construction Co., Project Manager of the Year. JP Cullen & Sons was recognized with a lifetime achievement award; MSOE Corporation member David Cullen serves as president and CEO of the company.

MSOE director named executive panel member Nigel Longworth, MSOE director of the Computer and Communication Services Department, recently served as an executive panel member for Brew City HDI, the local chapter of HDI, a global IT service and technical support association. This year’s panel discussion theme was “Strategic Goals for the Next Decade: People, Processes & Technology.”
EWB receives Corporate Citizen Award The International Institute of Wisconsin (IIW) recently awarded its annual Corporate Citizen Award to the Engineers Without Borders (EWB) student chapters at Marquette University, UW-Milwaukee and MSOE, as well as the Wisconsin EWB professional chapter. IIW selected the Milwaukee EWB chapters as recipients for the annual award in recognition of their continuing success in improving developing communities.
Dr. Ronald J. Gerrits ’94, associate biomedical engineering professor and perfusion program director, recently completed the research residency component of the Biology Scholars Program (BSP), an interdisciplinary program for biologists committed to improving undergraduate biology education. Several years ago, Gerrits began making knowledge maps for his students to use on complex or confusing material. He said, “Although I would get some comments stating that they were helpful, I never formally assessed what students thought about them.” Through the BSP, Gerrits’ research showed 100 percent of the respondents either strongly agreed or agreed that knowledge maps were useful to learning, 94 percent referred to them in subsequent courses, and 58 percent reported drawing their own knowledge maps in subsequent courses. Dr. Jeffrey LaMack ’97, assistant professor of biomedical engineering, is participating in the program this year. His research is focused on understanding how freshmen students use learning objectives as a learning tool in life science courses. The goal is to learn how educators might help students become more independent learners rather than relying on instructor-provided study guides.

MSOE students involved in opening of new clinic for those in need MSOE students were actively involved in the design of the new medical clinic at Repairers of the Breach (ROTB) homeless shelter in Milwaukee. MSOE’s School of Nursing began a partnership with ROTB in 2007. Since that time, several clinical groups (and dozens of MSOE nursing students) have worked at ROTB doing health assessments, screenings and referrals. The new space was designed in part by industrial engineering graduate Chris Maramba ’09, who completed the AutoCad drawings reflecting design elements collaboratively developed by several volunteers, including MSOE Professor Emeritus Lawrence Korta. The clinic was funded by private donations totaling $90,000 and serves the entire community. Through collaboration with Dr. Merlita Biese and MacCanon Brown at ROTB, this partnership has provided valuable real-world experience to MSOE students.

WMSE, Tom Crawford, among the best Paste magazine named WMSE 91.7FM one of the 40 Best Little Radio Stations in the U.S. WMSE has been the premier source for diverse music programming in Southeastern Wisconsin for nearly 30 years. In addition, WMSE Station Manager Tom Crawford was recently named Critic’s Choice in Local Radio Personality by the Shepherd Express. WMSE is MSOE’s non-profit, listener-supported radio station.

MSOE’s men’s basketball team recently spent five days in the Dominican Republic, playing several exhibition games as well as conducting a basketball camp for underprivileged children. The team learned a lot as they helped those in need, played against local teams and took in the local sights.
Academic centers merge to form statewide energy research powerhouse Wisconsin’s largest academic energy research organizations have merged to form a single statewide organization, headquartered in Milwaukee, with a mission of making the state a nationally recognized center of expertise to advance energy, power and control technologies. The Wisconsin Energy Research Consortium (WERC) brings together the state’s four largest engineering schools–UW-Milwaukee, UW-Madison, Marquette University and MSOE–with eight industry partners, including American Transmission Company, DRS Technologies, Eaton, Johnson Controls Inc., Kohler, Rockwell Automation, We Energies and LEM USA. The Milwaukee universities and their industry partners were previously known as the Southeastern Wisconsin Energy Technology Research Consortium. Congratulations to MSOE’s student chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). They took first place in the 2010 National Green Energy Challenge Student Competition, and it was their first time competing! The students conducted an energy audit of a commercial facility in need of energy-efficiency improvements. Based on their findings, teams then submitted a preliminary design of an energy retrofit that could include alternative energy sources like solar PV panels or wind turbines. MSOE students analyzed Sprecher Brewing in Glendale, Wis., for the competition. They presented their findings at NECA’s annual convention in October in Boston. Along with being named the national champions, the team received an $8,000 prize.
In Memory Thomas C. Hesse, software engineering junior, passed away on July 30, 2010, as the result of a motorcycle accident in Boston. Hesse was on the MSOE Dean’s List and was a student tutor. His passion was for motorcycles. He was in Boston for a summer internship with G2 Systems. He is survived by his parents, Bruce and Kenda Hesse, DeForest, Wis.; his brother Michael; his grandparents, extended family and many friends. The sincere sympathy and best wishes of the MSOE community are extended to Thomas’ family.
Warren E. Snyder, professor emeritus and Corporation member, passed away on Sept. 23, 2010, at the age of 88. Snyder earned a bachelor’s and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Kansas. He worked at Dresser Waukesha as the vice president of research and engineering for 16 years, retiring in 1986. He earned several patents and was a featured speaker at engineering conferences. After retiring, he became a professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at MSOE from 1986 until 2000, when he moved to Oklahoma City. In 2003 he was awarded the Internal Combustion Engine Award from American Society of Mechanical Engineers for lifetime achievement in his career.

Although he’s been teaching at MSOE for 20 years, Dr. Charles Tritt didn’t always envision teaching as his main calling. “My bachelor’s degree was in chemical engineering, and after graduation I worked for Proctor and Gamble. Eventually I decided there was more to life than making paper towels, so I went back to school and got my master’s in biomedical engineering,” said Tritt. “Later, as I was finishing up my Ph.D. research, I contacted the Applied Technology Center™ looking for an industrial research job. I ended up being hired to teach biomedical engineering. Teaching wasn’t even on my radar at the time, but it’s the perfect job for me. I love when a student finally understands a topic he or she has been struggling with. That light-bulb moment is really rewarding. I also enjoy seeing students in my classes graduate and go on to lead successful careers and lives,” said Tritt.
“MSOE empowers students with entrepreneurial ambitions to pursue their dreams.” In addition to being the interim biomedical engineering program director, Tritt is also the program coordinator for MSOE’s study-abroad program at Manipal Institute of Technology in Manipal, India. “My best advice for MSOE students is to gain a global perspective,” he said. “They can do that through studying abroad, traveling on their own, or even getting to know an international student who’s here on campus.” Tritt is passionate about entrepreneurship, and he served as the Kern Entrepreneurship Education Network (KEEN) fellow from

2006 to 2008. “That solidified my understanding and appreciation of entrepreneurship as it is related to engineering,” said Tritt. “I encourage students to be open to working for small, innovative companies after graduation. They’ll be asked to do more things. It could move their career ahead faster and prepare them to start their own business someday. MSOE empowers students with entrepreneurial ambitions to pursue their dreams.” In his free time, Tritt enjoys attending science fiction conventions with his wife Juliane Hunter. They also enjoy steampunk and rockabilly music events. He received the Falk Engineering Educator Award in 1995.
One on One: What is the last book you read for fun? The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. What household chore do you dread the most? Dealing with the invasive plants on our property. If you could win a free trip anywhere in the world, where would you go? Right now I’d choose Singapore, but my answer changes on a daily basis.

Grohmann Museum
Lake Boats: The Photography of Jim Brozek and Christopher Winters Jan. 14 – April 3, 2011 Local photographers Jim Brozek and Christopher Winters have both spent time on Great Lakes freighters documenting the work and workers of the boats of Lake Michigan. In this exhibit, they share the captivating and powerful images taken when they worked on the lakers; capturing the essence of life on board. Winters is a respected maritime artist, veteran shipwreck diver and photo journalist. A lifelong student of Great Lakes maritime history, he serves as the staff photographer at Discovery World at Pier Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Brozek has been a photographer for more than 25 years, and has experience working in a variety of environments including ore boats in Milwaukee’s harbor. “These unique work environments enabled me to shoot not as a disengaged photographer viewing a scene, but as one immersed in the workplace itself,” said Brozek. Fall Commencement More than 70 students became distinguished MSOE alumni at this year’s Fall Commencement. John W. Splude, former executive chairman of HK Systems and MSOE Regent and supporter, received an Honorary Doctor of Business and Economics degree. In his speech he advised graduates to stretch beyond their degree area, to appreciate and learn from their mistakes, and to value relationships with mentors. He also encouraged them to become mentors in their fields and pass on their knowledge and experience. Dr. Frederick C. Berry, MSOE’s new vice president of academics, presented graduates for their degrees.
Mechanical engineering graduate Mitchell Paulus, who graduated with high honors, was the class respondent. He told fellow class members to make themselves happy first, and the rest will fall into place.

Quick Takes
The 2010 Midwest Service Leaders Conference was held at MSOE recently. The biennial student-led regional conference seeks to help students develop skills, passion and knowledge to inspire meaningful service projects on campus. Here, conference attendees finished a blanket for “Project Night-Night.” The blankets, along with a book, stuffed animal and tote bag, will be delivered to homeless children in Milwaukee.
WMSE’s 9th Annual Food Slam raised more than $24,000 to support the independent radio station. The sold-out event was held at the Grohmann Museum this year, and featured 30 local restaurants.
Electrical engineering sophomore Mathew Braden participated in the sixth-annual Wheelchair Days event, which raised awareness of the challenges met and overcome by people with disabilities.
MSOE welcomed the class of 2014 and returning students to campus in September. More than 2,400 enrolled this fall, filling the residence halls to capacity with 940 students. Despite the soft economy, there is still great demand for engineers, nurses and business professionals.
More than 200 middle- and high-school teachers were on the MSOE campus this summer for Project Lead The Way teacher training.

Investing in a Bright Future—Today Virtually everyone has been affected by the global recession in some capacity, and MSOE is no different. Despite the challenges, and sometimes because of them, the university has recently implemented new initiatives across campus to emerge from the recession stronger than ever. These initiatives affect a wide variety of areas, from degree programs and academic opportunities to exciting new building and enrollment opportunities.
New academic opportunities University Scholars Program In Fall 2010, MSOE implemented the new University Scholars Program (USP), which targets the development of exceptional leadership, professional and technical skills. USP participants can tailor their classroom and laboratory experience to their interests, gain leadership skills through presentations, projects and other interactions with regional leaders in a variety of fields, and experience an enriched academic environment. The program is currently open to mechanical engineering or electrical engineering majors who meet specific academic qualifications, but MSOE intends to expand the USP to more majors in the next few years. The USP is expected to attract even more high-caliber students to MSOE. “The course work offered through the USP emphasizes experiential learning, topical diversity and encourages an independent, collaborative and cooperative learning environment,” said Dr. Cory Prust ’01, USP coordinator and assistant professor.

Electrical engineering co-op program Electrical engineering students now have the opportunity to participate in a co-op program, where they can gain real-life industrial experience as part of their formal education. Employment sessions begin the summer following sophomore year and typically include three rotations of co-op experience. Each rotation lasts for one academic term and one summer. “Students strongly benefit from participating in the MSOE coop program by learning not just technical skills, but also professional skills in an actual industrial environment,” said Dr. Steven Williams, professor and electrical engineering program director.
New building initiatives Biomolecular engineering laboratories MSOE’s new biomolecular engineering laboratory suite (pictured above) is now open for business. It includes a Wet Biotechnology Lab, a Senior Design Lab, a Dry Instrumentation Lab and a BSL-II Cell Culture Facility. The laboratories feature brand-new, top-of-the-line equipment ranging from 20°F and -80°F freezers to store DNA, RNA and other biomolecules; storage cabinets with negative pressure that safely contain vapors; macro and micro centrifuges and an autoclave that can steamor dry-sterilize both liquids and glassware. Each laboratory features data-input jacks and wireless hubs for easy Internet access and magnetic vicinity locks. The laboratories support MSOE’s biomolecular engineering program, which began in Fall 2009. MSOE is the only university in the state to offer a degree in biomolecular engineering. Athletic field and parking structure MSOE recently announced plans to invest $30 million in the now-vacant Park East Corridor. The proposal calls for an inground, 780-car parking facility topped by an athletic field, and a small, ground-level public park that would be developed and maintained by MSOE. The development will be largely supported with a very generous donation from Drs. Robert and Patricia Kern, and will not require any funding from the City of Milwaukee or Milwaukee County. The proposal needs the approval of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and the Common Council of the City of Milwaukee, as well as the cooperation of Marshall & Ilsley Corporation and the support of the Mayor of Milwaukee and the Milwaukee County Executive, before it can move ahead. The athletic field would be used for collegiate soccer and lacrosse and youth sports. As an extension of the Kern Center, it further supports MSOE’s commitment to student wellness and development as a whole person. Adding parking to campus, while perhaps not the most glamorous building project, will support the growth of the MSOE campus and make life much easier for MSOE’s students, faculty and staff.

New degree programs
New enrollment opportunities
Freshman-to-master’s degree in civil engineering MSOE recently began recruiting for a five-year, freshman-tomaster’s degree in civil engineering, which will begin in Fall 2011. MSOE is the first university in the state of Wisconsin to offer such a degree, in which students receive both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering after five years. “I’ve seen a lot of interest in the new civil engineering program among prospective students,” said Dr. Frank Mahuta, assistant professor and program director. To read more about the new degree, turn to the back cover.
Expanded recruiting efforts Although all of these initiatives help attract new students, the Enrollment Management Department is also doing its part by expanding its reach geographically. “We have begun to expand our recruitment efforts westward, specifically in Texas and California, because the high school populations in those states are growing. We’re also testing markets on the east coast,” said Dana Grennier, director of admission. Additionally, admission criteria for incoming engineering students has been raised, requiring a minimum composite ACT score of 22 (up from 20) and math sub-score of 24. Requirements for nursing and business students have not changed. “Historically, we know that students who don’t meet these benchmarks tend to struggle academically,” said Grennier, “so it made sense for us to raise them. The increased admission standards have already begun to improve our retention rates, and they put us more in line with national admission standards.” Additional scholarship opportunities To help students who have been hard hit by the downturn, MSOE has created more entry-level scholarships, such as a scholarship for Future Business Leaders of America participants, Project Lead The Way participants, and DECA participants, among others. MSOE now has legacy scholarships available to any child or grandchild of an MSOE alumnus/a. “These scholarships really help us to reach students we wouldn’t normally see and to make an MSOE education within reach for more people,” said Grennier. Admission counselors have initiated new tactics to grow MSOE’s student body, including expanding recruiting efforts and adding more scholarships, while increased admission standards help to improve retention rates.
Construction management juniors Austin Heide and Katie Thielen used a total station in a surveying course. Students in MSOE’s new civil engineering degree program (starting Fall 2011) will use similar equipment in classes and labs.
Master’s in construction and business management This fall marked the start of MSOE’s new master’s in construction and business management degree, which targets professionals who are working in, or have experience in, the construction industry. “Architectural engineers, construction managers and civil engineers are finding themselves responsible for bringing new business to their companies,” said Dr. Steven C. Bialek, chair of the MSOE Rader School of Business. “The new master’s degree will help those working in the field advance their technical expertise and prepare them with necessary business development skills.”

Career Fair More than 100 companies, many represented by MSOE alumni, attended the 2010 Career Fair held in October. The companies were looking for candidates for a variety of full- and part-time jobs and internships.

Zachman finishes first at NAC Championship; four MSOE golfers named All-NAC Junior Dane Zachman placed first at the NAC Championship in October with a two-day mark of four-over par. The Raiders finished second at the event. Senior Ben Turk tied for eighth at the NAC Championship. Zachman, senior Peter Eich and freshmen Drew Liner and Scott Loftus were selected to the All-NAC Team for the fall season. This is Zachman’s third straight year being named All-NAC and Eich’s second selection. Zachman also was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The low score of the season by any Raider was by Eich who shot a 70 at the Carthage Fall Invitational in September. Zachman carded a 71 in both the Carthage event and the first round of the NAC Championship.

Collingbourne, Hasler receive NAC honors Junior outside-hitter Kathleen Collingbourne and sophomore outside-hitter Stephanie Hasler received NAC Honorable Mention status. Collingbourne led the Raiders with 479 digs, 59 service aces (the fifth most for a Raider in a single season) and was second on the team in kills with 260. Collingbourne now stands fourth alltime at MSOE for digs (1,522) and service aces (119). Hasler led MSOE with 352 kills and was second in service aces (48), blocks (44) and digs (396). She is now seventh in university history with 605 kills and 92 service aces. Hasler’s 24 kills against both Lakeland (Oct. 1) and Ripon (Oct. 2) are tied for sixth in university history for a single match. Freshman opposite-hitter Mollie Zuberbier was named to the NAC AllSportsmanship Team. MSOE finished the season 11-20 overall and 4-8 in NAC play. Cayo and Grant reach semifinals at NAC Individual Championship The MSOE women’s tennis team competed in the NAC Individual Championship in October. Sophomore Courtney Grant and junior Carol Cayo beat Concordia-Wisconsin’s Grace Rechel and Jenny Ferrera 8-1. Grant and Cayo knocked off Dominican’s Viatra Baker and Monica Budzak 8-3 in the quarterfinals then lost to Phoebe Milner and Julie Spransy of Concordia-Wisconsin 9-7 in the semifinals. During the regular season, senior Ashley Blise logged a record of 5-3 while juniors Julie Burg and Marguerite Wellstein were both 5-6 in singles action.

Rate places ninth at NAC Championship Senior Cameron Rate led the way for the Raiders at the NAC Cross Country Championship in West Allis, Wis., in October. Rate finished ninth overall with a time of 27:38 in the 8K race. He was named All-NAC for his performance and was also selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team. The men’s squad placed fifth as a team. Freshman Trevor Koziczkowski received Honorable Mention status for his finish in 16th place at 28:21.5. The women’s team finished ninth at the NAC Championship. Westrich, Hosko highlight MSOE men’s soccer NAC honors Senior defender Joe Westrich and junior midfielder Dan Hosko were both named to the First Team All-NAC. Hosko was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Second Team for District 5. For Westrich, this is the second straight season being selected First Team All-NAC. He was also named NAC Defensive Player of the Year in 2009. Senior forward Rafael Arndt was selected to the Second Team All-NAC and senior midfielder Jimmy Burns received NAC Honorable Mention status. Defender Robert Nogle and midfielder Patrick Gathof were picked to the All-Freshman Team, while senior goalkeeper Jon Cerny was named to the NAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Cerny started all 19 games in goal for the Raiders. MSOE finished the season with an overall record of 10-9 and a NAC mark of 8-3.

Bohl leads MSOE women’s soccer NAC honors Freshman forward Paula Bohl was named First Team All-NAC. The last Raider to be named First Team All-NAC as a freshman was current junior forward Jessica Axt. Axt, senior defender Sarah Kislia and junior defender Karina Weideman were picked to the Second Team All-NAC. Defender Jenna Harvestine and midfielder Allison Zimont were named to the All-Freshman Team while senior midfielder Heidi Brehmer was selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team. Brehmer was also named to the CoSIDA/ESPN Academic All-District Third Team for District 5. MSOE finished the 2010 season with an 11-7-2 overall record and was 8-2-2 in the NAC. “When faced with a challenge in life, the only person who can begin the process of overcoming the challenge is you.” MSOE alumnus Kevin Meyers ’95 loves going fast. He is an active tandem bike racer, has dabbled in downhill skiing, car racing and even parachuting to achieve his love for speed. Unlike other speed demons however, Meyers is blind, having completely lost his sight in a hydroplane boat accident in 1987. Since his accident he has obtained a degree in business management systems from MSOE, became an Advance Communicator Silver in Toastmasters, works as an application analyst for Northwestern Mutual and, most recently, won several medals and became part of the U.S. Paralympic cycling team talent pool in tandem road and track bike racing. “Racing tandems is close to racing boats only not as fast–there is still that feeling of power, speed and being competitive. I also love to work on my racing bikes just as I loved to tinker with my boat,” said Meyers. Meyers worked as an appliance service technician but found his job difficult to do after losing his vision. “After attending a rehab program where I learned to type, read Braille and eventually use computers, I found that I really enjoyed working with computers. I felt I could earn a fouryear degree in computers and then obtain a full-time job working in the computer industry,” said Meyers. He chose

MSOE because he liked the small campus and class sizes, and he appreciated the help from Betty Albrecht, coordinator and counselor with Student Support Services. “My degree has been a tremendous help in my career. I believe that businesses large and small know that MSOE graduates have developed into very knowledgeable individuals through the academics offered at the university.” There are three things that Meyers is most proud of. One is his degree from MSOE. The second is his ability to ask questions and for support when he needs help. The third is his ability to help other people. “When I give a motivational speech,” said Meyers, “I’m excited if I help one person in the audience realize they have the ability to overcome any challenge in their life. Every speech I’ve given, there was always at least one person who told me that I touched their life.” Through his speaking engagements, his athletic accomplishments and his indomitable spirit, Meyers serves as a strong inspiration for all who meet him. Yet his message for success in life is simple: “When faced with a challenge in life, the only person who can begin the process of overcoming the challenge is you. There isn’t anyone else to get the ball rolling for you. It is only you!”

Honorary degree recipient and longtime supporter of MSOE Dr. Ernest W. Wirtanen ’41 EE passed away on Aug. 6, 2010. Years after graduation from MSOE, he formed Wirtanen Electrical Ltd. in Edmonton, Alberta, and led the company for more than 50 years. In 2006 he made a significant contribution to MSOE to fund the upgrade of a laboratory, which was renamed the Ernest W. Wirtanen Energy Conversion and Control Laboratory. He received an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree at MSOE’s 2008 Fall Commencement.
Dr. Richard Ungrodt ’41 EE (right), MSOE Regent and Professor Emeritus, passed away on Nov. 12, 2010. Ungrodt joined the Electrical Engineering Department as faculty in 1947, eventually becoming the department chairman in 1952. Ungrodt held several positions at MSOE, including assistant dean of engineering, dean of engineering, vice president of academic affairs, and vice president of academic resources and institutional development. He was elected to the MSOE Corporation in 1966 and the Board of Regents in 1974. He received the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1984, was given a Pioneer Award in 1985 and awarded an Honorary Doctor of Engineering degree in 1986. He will be deeply missed by the MSOE community. New Freshman-to-Master’s Degree in
Starting in Fall 2011, MSOE will offer a freshman-to-master’s degree in civil engineering. One of the truly unique features of the civil engineering (CVE) program is that graduates can receive both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in five years. This program is the first and only one of its kind in the state of Wisconsin. “The knowledge expected of a civil engineering graduate in the 21st century can no longer be acquired in the traditional four-year undergraduate engineering curriculum,” said Dr. Frank Mahuta, associate professor and civil engineering program director at MSOE.
Civil Engineering
The Curriculum The curriculum has been developed from the ground up to meet or exceed the new ASCE Body of Knowledge requirements. Whereas traditional four-year civil engineering programs have historically focused on the technical skills required of civil engineers, these new requirements put additional emphasis on civil engineers to be proficient in both technical and professional skills. Examples of such professional skills include familiarity public policy issues, business and public administration, globalization, leadership and teamwork. These expanded expectations are addressed within the framework of MSOE’s five-year program. Unique Features of the Program • MSOE is the only university in the state of Wisconsin to offer degrees in civil engineering, architectural engineering and construction management, giving students more choices with respect to potential career paths. • A four-year option leading to a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering will be available to students who enter the five-year program but are not prepared for graduate studies. Conversely, individuals who have an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree in civil engineering may apply for admission to the civil program at the graduate level.
