MUSTANG BASKETBALL Morningside has a combined four top 10 statistical rankings on the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics charts. Senior guards Faith Meyer and Tayte Hansen are sixth in three-point field goal percentage accuracy (66.7 percent). The long-range shooting success doesn’t end there, though. As a team, the Mustangs are fifth in accuracy (44.4 percent) and seventh in made treys per contest (11.2). Senior guard Zach Imig is just four points short of joining Morningside’s all-time scoring first 15. He enters the evening 16th with 1,249 points. Bryce Koch (2013-17) is No. 15 (1,252). Imig has one of Mside’s combined two individual and team national number rankings. His 19 steals are third-best. The team is ninth in fewest rebounds surrendered per outing (27.714). Morningside College’s men and women each harbor win streaks going into tonight’s doubleheader. Head coach Jim Sykes men’s team is 6-1 overall and 2-1 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, having won four straight. Head coach Jamie Sale’s women’s squad stands 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference behind three successive victories.
THE MATCH- UP Mside’s women have claimed 27 of 30 all-time meetings against the Defenders. That span includes a current run of six consecutive decisions. The men’s series shows the Maroon holding a 21-10 advantage on Dordt. The Mustangs have captured eight straight. Senior guard Sierra Mitchell is tracking towards becoming the 11th player in program history to reach the 1600-point mark. She goes into the week with 1,560.

Pottebaum knew he had to get a shot up. “It was cool to have that happen in front of our bench,” Pottebaum noted. “It was great being part of a big comeback like this. We had to persevere in the second half --- we were down double digits. We stayed composed, though … keeping the ball moving and playing Mustang basketball to a point where we were able to gain a little control.” The Maroon had to overcome a white-hot long-range shooting performance by the Red Raider trio of guards Jay Small, Keegan Van Egdom, and Trent Hilbrands. They combined to hit on 11 of 19 three-point attempts over the tension-filled 40 minutes. However, the youthful Mside group, trailing 71-61 with 7:31 to go, went on a quick 6-0 run to spark a 16-4 roll that gave the home team a 77-75 advantage with 1:25 to go. NWC answered with a bucket with seven seconds to go, setting up Pottebaum’s final moment heroics. “I kept telling the guys we had to get stops when Northwestern was building their lead,” Sykes pointed out. “The way they were shooting, it could have gone from 10 to 20 quickly. To our credit, we could get the pace picked up and work a different continuity of offense. We could get going downhill and attack the rim, setting up some chances for points at the free-throw line with the clock stopped.” Pottebaum, who posted 11 of Morningside’s final 16 points, led the offense with 18 to go with a team-high six boards. Senior center Trey Brown resumed his impressive 2020-21 with 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists, and Imig wound up with 13. Sophomore guard Trey Powers came off the bench with a good evening’s work that featured 10 points, four rebounds, and a blocked shot. Morningside’s women return to the court for the first time since upending Mount Marty University 107-52 Nov. 21. Mitchell and junior forward Sophia Peppers led the program’s highest point output since 2017 with 28 and 21, respectively.
ABOUT DORDT Head coach Brian Van Haaften’s Defender men’s team, sporting a 6-2 overall and 2-2 conference record, have four players averaging double figures scoring-wise. A trio featuring senior forward Garrett Franken (15.5), senior guard Jesse Jansma (14.5), and freshman forward Jacob Vis (14.0) top the quartet, followed by sophomore forward Cade Bleeker (10). Franken and Vis are among the top inside combos in the conference, as they each average better than six rebounds per contest and have blocked four-or-more opponent shot attempts. DU’s women, coached by Bill Harmsen, are 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the GPAC. Sophomore guard Bailey Beckman brings in better than 14 points (14.2) per appearance due mainly to draining 12 three-point buckets. Senior forward Erika Feenstra (12 ppg) and sophomore forward Erika Gustafson (10.2 ppg) are close behind on the Defender point chart.
WEEKEND PLANS Morningside is scheduled to travel to Midland University Saturday, Dec. 5. Game times are 2 p.m. (women) and 4 p.m. (men) at MU’s Wikert Events Center in Fremont, Neb.
