MSA Trust Impact Report 2016-2017
Introduction W elcome to the MSA Trust Impact Report for financial year 2016-17 – It has been a busy year both for Services and for the Fundraising teams and we look forward to sharing some of the highlights in this report. As always our year began with the flurry of excitement that is the London Marathon and with a record 11 runners covering the route in aid of MSA Trust, the staff team were delighted to be able to establish two cheering points along the course. They finished the day hoarse, but elated, with the fantastic effort of all our runners. We also had great corporate support this year from our partners Maurice Turnor
Gardner LLP. Alongside them we had corporates such as KPMG raising funds from the Three Peaks challenge and the young people of ACRE Foundation who climbed Mount Toubkal in Africa. Our long-term partners Klondyke Garden centres continue to raise funds via the sales of plastic bags in their stores. To all of them we send our grateful thanks. The incredible funds raised by groups of people who wanted to undertake activities and spread awareness of MSA continued throughout the summer, with cake sales, golf days and tea parties. In November 5 competitors took part in ‘Runvember’ for MSA Trust and a charity ball was held in Southport. We cannot
mention all the wonderful activities that were undertaken, but the Trustees continue to be very grateful for the amazing effort people make to lend their support and have enjoyed immensely the opportunity to go along to some of the events and cheque collections to meet supporters. During the year we also continued to consolidate our organisational structure and said some goodbyes to staff who were retiring or moving on. The Trustees extend their thanks to all the staff at the MSA Trust for their hard work and commitment throughout the year.

Research T
he year began with one of our nurse specialist’s presenting at the International MSA Congress in Salerno in April 2016. 120 people attended the conference from all over the world and shared their research through presentations and poster displays. Another of our researchers presented on the breakdown of alpha synuclein in MSA. Attending conferences of this kind is vital in enabling us to understand what research is happening beyond the UK and how we can support and influence the overall direction of MSA research.
Viorica Chelban was appointed as ABN MSA Research Fellow at the UCL Neuroscience department. The Trust was delighted to receive several legacies this year. This means it is possible to plan and hold a research grant round during the 2017-18 financial year. We are so grateful to those people who choose to help the Trust to fund more of our vital work in this way. We are always happy to provide our legacy pack or to discuss the options if people are interested in leaving a legacy to us.
Our decision to enter a partnership with Association of British Neurologists meant we could recruit a Clinical Research Fellow and in March 2017,

We continued to see a significant increase in overall membership during the year - up by 11% to over 6,000. In consequence, the Trustees at the year-end agreed to the recruitment of our 4th MSA Nurse Specialist which will make a huge difference to the support we can give in the future.

As a member of The Neurological Alliance, we supported their patient survey developed for people with a neurological condition. We had a marvellous 153 responses from people with MSA. Thanks to all who participated. The information is being used to help us direct our services more effectively and to help us try to improve the lives of

people affected by MSA through our Policy activities. For example, difficulty accessing Continuing NHS Healthcare crops up again and again for many people with MSA. The Trust is doing all it can to use the information supplied to protect and improve care and services for people with MSA.
Information to support both people affected by MSA and the healthcare professionals caring for them continues to be developed and reviewed. During the year we increased our range of Factsheets, including those aimed at Health and Care Professionals. We know how much this information is valued and in addition to printed resources, the redesign of our website resulted in over a quarter of a million page views during the year.

Thank you to all our Friends We had another amazing year of support from our wonderful donors. Here we highlight just a few of the memorable moments, from our second cheering point at London Marathon 2016, to our incredible competitors at Ride London 100 miles and 46 miles; to the lovely tea parties held around the country supporting the work of our amazing Nurses. We cannot name all the individual events, but we are so grateful to everyone who has contributed in whatever way they can and we hope the pictures will bring back some happy memories for those who have taken part and perhaps inspire a few more eventers this year. All your help means we can provide more support for people affected by MSA and one day find the cause and the cure for this devastating condition. Thank You.
