BEST MEXICAN FOOD: VENTURA’S TAMALES For another year running, customers have voted Ventura’s Tamales the best spot in The Crossroads for Mexican food. The restaurant, 3907 N. Navarro St., credits its long history of serving Victoria for its success and loyal customers. “We’ve been in business since 1985 as a family owned and operated establishment,” said Robert Royer, Ventura’s marketing and human resources director. “We’re on the second generation of ownership right now.” The restaurant was originally started by the matriarch fondly known as Mama Ventura in a small space on Water Street. “It was a small, to-go facility that didn’t even have tables,” Royer said. Today, the restaurant is run and operated by sisters Martha Vasquez and Susan Martinez. From the beginning, Royer

said, the restaurant has focused on using fresh and high-quality ingredients to make their famous tamales, quesadilla rolls, fajitas and more. Another customer favorite are Ventura’s homemade chips, which are made from fresh taco shells broken in half, Royer said. A major focus for Ventura’s Tamales is giving back to the Victoria community through supporting local groups and initiatives, Royer said. Above all, Ventura’s focuses on treating everyone like family, from giving back to the community to how they treat their customers. “Our staff has built some very strong relationships with our guests over the years where they’re almost an extension of family for our staff members,” Royer said. “It comes back to the family aspect. We treat all of our customers like family.”

BEST CHICKEN FRIED STEAK, LUNCH SPOT: DOUBLE J EATERY Lauren Tagliabue and her brother John Pierce Jr. grew up cooking Southern food in Louisiana, from jambalayas to barbecue. When her father John was transferred to a new oil field job in Texas and later laid off, the family decided to start cooking for the people of Victoria. In 2000, they opened Double J Eatery. “We always got together and cooked comfort food,” Tagliabue said. “I think Double J’s menu reflects that.” The result has been a long-running reputation for excellence, including multiple selections as the Best of the

Best lunch spot in the Crossroads and a winning streak in the best chicken fried steak category that is now eight years long after Advocate readers voiced their support yet again this year. The restaurant had to make some changes during the pandemic, Tagliabue said, and Double J Eatery now offers curbside service. But when it comes to the chicken fried steak, consistency is the name of the game. The steaks, which are typically between 7 and 8 ounces, are hand-cut, tenderized and hand breaded every day.

“We haven’t changed our recipe in 21 years,” Tagliabue said. On Wednesdays, customers can order the chicken fried steak El Rancho style: a slightly smaller portion topped with chili con queso, fresh chips and pico de gallo and served with a side of fideo and refried beans.

Other popular items include chicken fried chicken, chicken strips and fried shrimp, which is served Tuesdays and Fridays, including a 12 for $12 offer that comes with french fries and hush puppies. “We obviously appreciate our customers and we wouldn’t be here without ‘em,” Tagliabue said.

Frank Martinez, general manager of Las Palmas Mexican Bar and Grill, convinced his friend Marc Hinojosa to try one of his signature margaritas. Las Palmas won the Best Margarita contest by Advocate readers. Hinojosa was not a margarita enthusiast until he downed one of Martinez’s perfectly balanced concoctions, trademarked as the Frankarita. “Success follows him (Martinez) wherever he goes. He’s a craftsman, and he’s very good at his craft,” Hinojosa said. “It’s a good social drink, and I like mine frozen with sangria — that’s my favorite. It adds some fruitiness and takes away some of the tart.” Hinojosa continued that the restaurant’s atmosphere, food and margaritas work together for an enjoyable dining experience. Las Palmas has been in

business for about 15 years, and Martinez has worked there for about five years. He serves his margaritas, which have won the Victoria Advocate’s “Best of the Best” margarita several times, frozen or on the rocks. They come in large and small sizes with flavor options including peach, strawberry, mango or sangria. “It’s not sour or tart, and people really like it,” Martinez said. Martinez attributes the restaurant’s success to the good service provided “from the back of the house to the front of the house.” “We have a great staff, management team and owner, Ruben Leon,” he said. As far as the food goes, Martinez noted the popularity of the ribeye steak, enchiladas and Texas chicken. Martinez said the restaurant is very fortunate to win “Best

of the Best,” and the success takes a lot of hard work.

“We have very loyal customers,” Martinez concluded.

Then & Now Antiques, Gifts and Collectibles has been selling a little bit of everything for 13 years. The shop won best antiques as voted on by Advocate readers. The 5,000-square-foot store is filled with both new and old merchandise of 25 vendors who rent the space. Sachets and candles at the entrance of the shop fill the air with an appealing fragrance. “You have to give yourself some time to see it all,” said Marti Villareal, the shop’s sole proprietor. “You walk through one direction and think you’ve seen it all, but when you go back the other way, you see things you didn’t see the first time around.” The shop sells a mind-boggling selection of eclectic merchandise that includes albums, clothing, costume

jewelry, furniture, artwork, crafts, baby clothes and items for the man cave. One might find a neon sign followed by collectible glassware, or old tools followed by fine jewelry. “We serve all demographics — just as many men as women — and kids just love what they find. We have sports cards and sports figures, too,” Villareal said. “We get compliments all the time that we are very organized and neat.” The merchandise is not packed too tightly into the spaces or stacked too high, so the shopping atmosphere is comfortable, Villareal said. The vendors are all different. Some hunt for treasures at auctions and others have collected items for a lifetime, which their children don’t want, so they are selling them. One vendor offers clearance sales all the time.

“You never know what you’ll find in the store,” she said. “The vendors bring new stuff in every day.”

BEST DELI, MEAT: DICK’S FOOD STORE

Excellent customer service has allowed Dick’s Food Store to keep running since 1938. “Being a small business, we can look at every department and look at everything that we are doing right and everything we are doing wrong,” said Ronnie Hyak, owner. “We provide the best type of services.” Dick’s Food Store has won the Best of the Best award in the deli or meat category for their second time. The grocery also won the Small Business Partner award last year with the Texas Chamber of Commerce. Every day, Dick’s employees get up and get going bright and early. On a typical morning, Dick’s employees start the day by making sure the store is nice and clean. They even clean the cash registers. Employees also go through every aisle and check to make

sure their products are in good shape. Dick’s employees check their store from front to back. “We train our employees until they can do the job themselves. We try to train them the right way,” Hyak said. “The grocery store managers also walk around the store to check on their employees.” The store also cares deeply about catering to their customers. During the freeze, many people called Dick’s to ask for specific products. “We keep in contact with our partners, so we can inform the customer of what will be available, especially during the freeze,” Hyak said The store never shies away from carrying or making the best products, said Hyak. Their in-house-made chicken salad is wildly popular.

“We would like to thank our customers of Victoria for voting for us and acknowledging

that we are one of the best,” Hyak said. “We will try to keep it up.”

BEST CONVENIENCE STORE: THE TEXAN

Located at the intersection of Main Street and the loop in Victoria County, the Texan convenience store isn’t your average pit stop. In addition to 28 gas pumps and five truck lanes for large diesel vehicles, there is an array of made-to-order food options inside. “We like to call ourselves a restaurant that offers fuel,” Melissa Schulz, director of human resources for The Texan Convenience Stores, said on behalf of all the leadership staff. “We have a full service kitchen with daily meal specials, a wide variety of entrees with sides, and the best burger in South Texas.” The Texan also offers apparel, novelty items, wine, fishing gear and vehicle necessities, she said. The Texan opened in October 2018. For the second year in a row, Advocate readers have named it the best of

the best convenience store in the Crossroads. What sets the store apart, Schulz said, is its outstanding employees and its active role in the community. “We see ourselves as part of the community and a place that people can incorporate into their daily routine,” Schulz said. “Whether for fuel, food, snacks, or gifts, we want the Texan to be at the top of the list where our customers know they will be well taken care of and cared about.” The staff is constantly focused on the customer experience, Schulz said. Employees take pride in clean bathrooms and the well-lit parking lot that is spacious and easy to navigate so families feel safe to stop. “We believe in doing the right things consistently,” Schulz said. “We feel like we should exceed our customers’ expec-

Yvonne Ramirez Yvonne Ramirez is poised to make her shop Blue: Vendors Villa a one-stop-shop to find that perfect gift for a loved one, learn something and be a home away from home. “We want to stay as down to earth as possible and we want customers to feel like they can breathe here,” she said of the shop she opened in late 2019 at 547 E. Pearl St. in Goliad. Ramirez’s shop, which she refers to as Blue, won in the Advocate’s Best of the Best category for best gifts, which she said is a great honor because the business has not been opened too long. “It is very humbling since we have not been open long and we have had COVID-19 to deal with,” she said. “I actually cried after I received the call. Happy ecstatic tears, that is.” Blue’s shelves carry trinkets, jewelry, purses, clothes, furniture and everything people need for their loved ones. The shop

receives shipments of new products every week, all from small-scale owners, she said. “Each of our vendors has their own twist and style, and can be harder to find in other stores,” she said. “We want our mom-and-pop businesses to thrive and live their dream.” They also sell pastries and desserts alongside their products. In addition to sales, Ramirez said she hopes to do more Facebook live videos showcasing do-it-yourself paint workshops in the coming months, which have become a staple on their Facebook page. While the products are certainly part of the experience that brings customers back, Ramirez attributes Blue’s success to a pleasant and “happy vibe” in the store. “The best compliment I hear is ‘This is a happy place.’ I absolutely love that,” she said.

All money from donations goes toward the Christmas in the Park event. With the help of volunteers, Christmas in the Park has been able to be part of a community tradition for the past 21 years.

Crossroads residents have been kicking up their heels since 1890 at Schroeder Dance Hall in the Schroeder community located about 15 miles from Victoria. Schroeder Hall won best place to dance, best bars and clubs, and best dance and live music venue. Christine Krause, owner of the dance hall, attributed the establishment’s staying power to its original role as a hub for the community. Now, it’s been around so long that it attracts people from the surrounding area. “I hear such interesting stories about bands that played here. One person said, ‘My grandfather played here in the 1930s,’” she said. “It’s such a beautiful old building, and we continue the tradition of bringing in top musicians. is made of high-quality wood purchased during the 1950s, and it’s been well preserved since then, Krause said. Texas Dance Hall Preservation looks to the Krauses for floor care tips for other dance halls. “We are the Crossroads’ premier live music venue with large stages inside and outside for our concerts,” Krause said. The hall brings in musicians who play Texas country, classic country, Red Dirt country and Texas swing, among other genres, and falls in line with Texas’ other top-tier establishments based on the artists it attracts. Patrons also enjoy the food offered by the old dance hall from brisket nachos to hamburgers. “We play a little bit of all of it,” Krause said. “We hit everything to keep all the different populations happy. We don’t stick with one thing. We offer variety.”

Stephanie Ledwig Emma Hilliard, 14, an eighth-grader at Cade Middle School, found a home away from home when she started dancing at the Ledwig Dance Academy four years ago. Stephanie Ledwig, owner of the academy, won best youth sports coach and best woman-owned business. Advocate Readers also voted Ledwig Dance Academy the best dance school. “It’s a safe place to express myself, and I can come to them with any problem I have, and they do not judge me,” Emma said. “They always have my back, and it truly feels like family. There are no words to tell you how much this studio means to me.” Emma appreciates Ledwig’s leadership, reliability, kindness and loyalty. A sense of purpose and growth are benefits of Emma’s affiliation with Ledwig and the academy. Emma has been pushed out of her comfort zone by participating in competitive dance. “They are always encouraging me to do my best and

THE EVERMORE try new things,” Emma said. “I started company (competitive dance), and I was so scared. I had never done anything like that — going to competition and being judged. They push me to be the best I can be.” The academy, which has about 200 students, has been in business for eight years. Classes are offered for ages 2 and older. Ballet, tap, jazz, pointe, hip-hop, lyrical contemporary dance, competitive dance and acrobatics are among the offerings. Strength and conditioning classes also are available. Ledwig said people likely voted for her and her academy because she has a passion for children, teaching and dance. She said she gives 110% to the job because she loves it. “I feel like our studio is a good environment with a loving, qualified staff,” Ledwig said. “We’re very welcoming and always try to learn more. We’re never done improving and trying to do more for our kids. We want to keep learning.”

Customer satisfaction and how well the homes are built are why general manager J.R. Shelby thinks Palm Harbor in Victoria continues to be voted the best in their category. Open in Victoria since 1985 and headquartered in Addison, Palm Harbor sells manufactured homes across the Crossroads and has a 92% market share of triple-wide houses in Victoria. BEST PLACE TO WORK: VICTORIA SCHOOL DISTRICT Victoria residents voted the Victoria school district as the best place to work. This is a first for the Victoria school district. “When we say Team VISD, we truly mean “team” in the deepest sense of the word,” said Tammy Nobles, the district’s executive director for talent, acquisition, support and retention. “Our team bond has resulted in something very special that leads to becoming a family. We take care of one another, each other, and all others. We cry together. We celebrate together. We laugh together.” Nobles said any district employee has a story to show how they see their work peers as an extended family. Each one of the employees brings a unique aspect to the “family dynamic.” A key reason Nobles said she thinks the district won the category is because every employee’s input is valued and welcomed. “It is never frowned on, but instead (it is) seen as an opportunity to improve,”

she said. “In education, each member of our VISD family feels a true sense of purpose, not just for themselves but for the children we are entrusted with caring for daily.” The district enrolls about 14,000 students and employs almost 1,000 teachers. District employees operate using the academic calendar, which allows many to have the same schedule as their children. While working, employees help students find their future career and life paths, Nobles said. “Where we work matters to every single one of us,” she said. “We are all willing to offer input, listen empathically to one another and make needed changes knowing that doing so leads to improvements not only for employees but for our entire organization. Also working as a real estate agent, Escalante said his work is mainly focused on Express Tax, which has been open for 28 years. The locally-owned business works mostly in tax preparation, Escalante said. After

tax season is over, he said he switches gears into real estate. Working with the public was an attribute Escalante said he learned from his father, who was also self-employed as a mechanic while Escalante was growing up. When criminal defense attorney Brent Dornburg sits down with a client for the first time, he prides himself on being direct. “Especially when it comes to the felonies, this is your life we’re talking about here, your freedom, your liberty,” Dornburg said. “I have to tell people things all the time that they may not necessarily care to hear. Linda Ledwig, deputy executive director of Early Childhood Intervention, said the reason she thinks the program was named Best of the Best is because of the quality of the staff. “These ladies know the birth to 3 population, and they are experts in the field,” Ledwig said. “These guys are just exceptional.” The program offers a number of child and family services including occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition therapy, special skills training, counseling, family education and baby yoga to name a few. www.VictoriaAdvocate.com

The program is housed by the Region 3 Education Service Center. Early Childhood Intervention has been operating with Region 3 for the past 40 years, even in years the legislature didn’t make funding a priority, Ledwig said. “I really think it’s the quality of the services we provide,” she said. “The passion they have for what they do is just amazing.” Passion is a driving force for most who work at the program. The goal was to make the program the best it can be to the point where even the staff chose to use the services for their children and grandchild, which they do, Ledwig said. The program has doubled in size in the last seven years, Ledwig said. It serves about 1,000 kids and families monthly in its 13-county coverage area. About seven years ago, it served about 300 a month. “We love what we do,” she said. “We love our babies.”

Part of the secret behind the success? The wife-and-husband business team of Cristal and Mario Vallejo. The couple started the business together

and continue to operate as a team, Mario Vallejo said. “She’s got a friendly smile, so she’s kind of the friendly face that our customers see,” Vallejo said. “We’re together 24/7,” he added. “It never gets old. It’s great to have your work partner slash partner in life (with you) so you don’t get stressed out.” The Vallejo couple brings that family spirit to all of their customers. Everyone who works in the shop treats a customer’s car like it’s their own or a member of their family’s, Vallejo said. It doesn’t matter if the job is a simple oil change or a task that will take days to finish; Vallejo Motors’ employees take the same approach no matter what.

Vallejo Motors, 303 E. Juan Linn St. in Victoria, is a full service auto repair shop and can work with vehicles of any make and model. The shop also does fleet service maintenance and some performance work, Vallejo said. Since the start of the pandemic, Vallejo Motors has closed its lobby for the safety of staff and customers, meaning that the business has tried to go the extra mile to give customers a personal touch. Slick’s Oil Change is located at 303 Glascow St. in Victoria. Debbie Gohlke gave up her career as a dental hygienist to open Slick’s Oil Change with her sons three and a half years ago. After years of working away from home, the Gohlkes decided they wanted to set up shop in Victoria and spend more time together with their families. “Everybody worked away from home in some form or fashion,” Gohlke said. “They were ready to have an opportunity to come back to their families on a daily basis.” It didn’t take long for the family to earn a strong reputation with customers. This year, Slick’s was voted best auto service in Victoria. This is the company’s first time winning the category. The business was the runner-up last year.

Gohlke’s three sons, Shaye, Jayme and Matthew, are all part-owners along with her. All three of them provide oil changes and inspections. They also do light mechanical work at the shop, 303 Glascow St. just off North Navarro Street and right by Academy Sports. An appointment is required for mechanical work. While the shop’s mechanics do their best to work efficiently, Gohlke said they also pride themselves on being careful. “We try to get cars in and out as quickly as possible and still pay attention to detail,” she said. Matula’s Collision Center A family-owned business that has been around since 1995 has won its second time as best automobile paint and body repair shop. Matula’s Collision Center has been in Victoria since 2006 and has been in business for a total of 26 years. “The majority of our customers are repeat customers — definitely repetitive. Quality of work is why people would vote for us,” said Veronica Matula, who co-owns the business with her husband Jimmy Matula. The company has many walk-in customers of people who have had recent accidents. Matula’s Collision Center tries to do more for the customer than what they ask for. They will polish small things such as scuff marks and scratches around the vehicle while the customer is there.

Their No. 1 priority is satisfying the customer. “I write the estimates and explain to people what we are doing and why we are doing it,” said Jimmy Matula. “When I write something up, I write everything I know that we need to do to make it 100% right to where I know the customer will be happy.” The company aims to get things done the right way the first time around. Customers expect the job to be done right, he said. Matula’s Collision Center is big on team effort. Therefore, it takes every staff member to keep the company going. “We would not be where we are after 26 years of being in business if it was not for our customers,” said Veronica Matula. “We are grateful for the people who keep coming back to us.”

For almost 70 years, Bugmobiles has been serving the Crossroads with its signature Bugmobiles truck promising to rid homes and businesses of all their pesky pest problems. Bugmobiles, which is headquartered in Victoria, opened in 1954 and has been serving the region ever since. Currently, Bugmobiles works to eradicate pests and rodents throughout a 100-mile radius, said owner Jim Kiening Jr. The most common problems in the warm and humid climate are ants and roaches, Kiening said, but Bugmobiles also frequently handles termites, bedbugs, fleas, and pretty much any type of pest you can think of. Kiening said one reason he thinks customers have been

so loyal to Bugmobiles is because they know they’ll get to talk to a real person about their pest problem. “From 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., five days a week, there are people here to answer the phone,” Kiening said. You won’t have to leave a message or wait for a response to your email. After you’ve outlined your pest issue, someone will visit your home, business, or industrial site to inspect it and learn more about the pests. Once the technician has determined the problem, they’ll figure out what procedure will best get rid of the pests. Kiening said he was proud to win Best of the Best again because it was a reflection of the company’s loyal customers and Bugmobiles’ dedication to honest, hard work.

Dr. Robert Zboril’s mantra is to move with a purpose and do the next right thing. At Zboril Dental Center on John Stockbauer Drive, he strives to do just that for every patient that walks through the doors. “We offer personalized dental care,” Zboril said. “I like to sit down with folks and find out where they are, where they want to be with their dental health and what their goals are. Then we make them a personalized plan to take them from where they are to where they want to be.” Zboril opened his practice in Victoria three years ago. For the second year in a row, he was named the best dentist in the Crossroads by Advocate readers. He came in as second runner-up in orthodontics. The continued recognition, Zboril said, is a direct result of his team. “I’ve been blessed with a very good team,” he said. “We work really hard to create a good experience for patients. We

take our time to talk to them, find out what their needs are and then create personalized healthcare for them. “Health care is not necessarily as personalized as it used to be, so I think that is something people really value.” Another big priority among staff is listening to ensure patients’ needs are met, he said. “Dentistry itself is a service to people and you have to listen to them to be able to give them what they’re wanting,” he said. “That is a big focus for us, just taking the time.” Seeing patients’ transformations is the most rewarding part, he said. “Maybe they’re embarrassed of their smile or in pain,” Zboril said. “And whether it is taking pain away from a toothache or doing a set of veneers for somebody, they’re able to rediscover themselves.”

Victoria Pain and Rehabilitation helps patients get back to their daily lives. With the help of Victoria Advocate readers, this is the second year Victoria Pain and Rehabilitation has won first place in the physical therapy category. With five staff members in the physical therapy department, Victoria Pain and Rehabilitation staff see about 18 to 20 patients a day. “Our patients normally comment on how they get personalized one-on-one care with us,” said Candace Garcia, physical therapist assistant. “We spend a good hour www.VictoriaAdvocate.com

The staff also see patients who come in with issues re-

lated to injuries from motor vehicle accidents, pain that had developed over time and a lot of post-surgical pain. “We try to give a full-on body approach — they might come in with knee pain, but we will try to adjust their posture and mobility, so they can prevent knee pain from coming back in the future and other pain,” Fuller said.

medicine for 23 years, with 21 of those in Victoria. In Victoria, he is part of Victoria Heart and Vascular Center, 2104 Patterson Drive, with Dr. Harish Chandna and Dr. Dakshesh-Kumar Parikh. Gaalla’s patients are usually people having problems with their hearts, like chest pain or shortness of breath, who are hoping to get more information and learn if they have any type of heart problems. “We just try to be attentive and listen to the patients and what their needs are and respond in the appropriate way,” Gaalla said. At Victoria Heart and Vascular Center’s office, Gaalla and his colleagues can perform stress tests and ultrasounds to see if the patient has any issues with their heart. tional problems, Gaalla might perform a certain procedure in a hospital setting, like inserting a heart catheter, a stent, or a pace maker. The people who need to be most cautious about their heart health are those who have one or multiple risk factors for heart disease. Risk

factors include diabetes, hypertension, cholesterol, smoking, age, and a family history of heart disease, among others, Gaalla said. “It’s a small community and I think word of mouth is why we do well,” he said. “We treat people well and I think that’s the word that gets around.”

Five of the six members of the Texas Continentals sing. “One of our strengths is that we have five singers,” said Mark Zepeda, a vocalist, pianist and guitarist who originally formed the band with Greg Cummings, the bass player. “It gives us the versatility to do a lot of different music. We put a lot of effort into the vocals and share the lead singing on the songs.” The band won this year’s best musician and band award as voted on by Advocate readers. The six-member band played its first gig together in October 2016. The other members include Sarah Patek, a vocalist who is Zepeda’s daughter; Orwww.VictoriaAdvocate.com

lando Zepeda, a vocalist, keyboard player and guitarist who is Zepeda’s brother; Rodney Silva, lead guitarist and vocalist; and James Zamora, the drummer. Their sound technician, Michael “Mikey” Liserio, is “one of the best in the area.” The band plays a lot of Texas country for the young crowds and classic country for the older crowds. The band also plays some 70s and early 80s music by the likes of Chicago and The Doobie Brothers, among others. “I think we’ve developed a pretty good fan base,” Zepeda said. “We get a lot of compliments when people hear us for the first time.” Concert-goers can expect “great music and vocals with wide appeal.” Those who like to dance and those who just like to listen will enjoy the band’s performances. The name of the band, Texas Continentals, pays tribute to Zepeda’s deceased father, Ernest Zepeda, formerly of the band Ernest and the Continentals. Ernest Zepeda often played with his band at the Continental Inn, hence the name.
