he Texas Rose Festival celebrates Tyler's rose-growing heritage and the beauty of the rose, the most splendid flower of all. This year's rose queen is Anna Grace Hallmark, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Blake Hallmark. Serving as Rose Festival princess is Elizabeth Reid Walker, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Fletcher Walker III. Also, serving as the Duchess of the Texas Rose Festival is Emily Ann Milton, the

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Carver and Dr. and Mrs. Mark Milton. The Queen's Court also includes ladies-in-waiting from Tyler families, out-of-town duchesses, escorts and the children who serve as the queen's attendants. The Rose Capital of America! The rose industry has been a part of the Tyler economy for more than 100 years.

Like most college freshmen, Anna Grace Hallmark was happy to return home for Thanksgiving break in 2019 as it allowed her to spend time with family and friends. One evening that week, she had gone with her parents and grandparents to watch her brother play in a basketball game. Immediately after, her parents asked her to drive over to her grandparents’ house. “We were all hanging out. We’d had some food. It was just a very nice night with my family,” she recalled. “I didn’t really think anything of it.” Her grandparents have long been friends with Mary Lauren and Bruce Faulkner, so when the Faulkners came over to visit, she also didn’t think

anything of it. But then, they gave her a box to unwrap. “I opened the box and inside there was a silver tray engraved with my name. Beneath my name, it said, ‘Queen of the Texas Rose Festival,’” Hallmark recalled. “I was so shocked and surprised.” A public announcement was made in January of 2020 that Hallmark would serve as the Texas Rose Festival Queen that year. However, the annual Tyler event was delayed due to the pandemic, so Hallmark has had the honor of serving as Rose Queen for two years. “It’s been super fun,” she said. “We got to do a lot of community service during that time and it was a really good opportunity.” Hallmark is the daughter of Erica and Cameron

Blake Hallmark of Tyler. She attends the University of Mississippi where she is majoring in Business. During her tenure as Rose Queen, she has served as a volunteer for PATH, East Texas Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and visited with children at the Promise Academy. Hallmark is no stranger to the Texas Rose Festival. She served as a dresser for attendants in 2018 and 2019 and as a Queen’s Tea junior hostess when she was in the second grade. Of all the October 2021 Texas Rose Festival events, she said she is most looking forward to the Queen’s Tea. “The tea has always been my favorite. It’s open to the public and the little kids get dressed up and they are so excited to be there,” Hallmark said. “I’m a big kid person so I love seeing them and interacting with them.” She also has a long family legacy of being involved in the Texas Rose Festival. Her mother, Erica Needham Hallmark, served on the Wardrobe Committee from 2005 to 2010 and as a chaperone in 2009. She also served as a lady-in-waiting in 1996. Hallmark’s parents and grandparents have continued to support the festival as hosts and sponsors since 1986. Many other family members also have participated in the festival. It’s a really nice tradition.” In designing this year’s Rose Queen dress, Hallmark said she had some ideas and new designer Jacob A. Climer also brought many ideas to the table. She was excited to see Climer bring those ideas to life. When she saw her dress and tried it on for the first time, Hallmark said it was both an “overwhelming” and an “exciting” experience. “It was beautiful,” she said. “I was a little nervous about the weight of the dress but when I got to put it on, I felt better. My worries went away.” While Hallmark is excited for the 2021 Texas Rose Festival to be here, she said the most rewarding aspect of the past two years has been the community service. Hallmark said the volunteer service was a bit of an eye-opening experience for her as she learned more about the community in which she grew up. “The community service was really special. I learned a lot,” Hallmark said. “I was grateful to be able to give back in that way.”

train pays tribute to cystic fibrosis

n designing the train that accompanies her Texas Rose Festival dress, Queen Anna Grace Hallmark wanted to pay tribute to her childhood best friend with cystic fibrosis. Her train tells the story of “65 Roses” that is often associated with cystic fibrosis, a progressive, genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas and other organs. “I wanted to incorporate that story to honor my best friend,” Hallmark said. The “65 Roses” story dates back to 1965. At that time, Mary G. Weiss had become a volunteer with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation after learning that her three sons had the disease, according to the foundation. Weiss’s 4-year-old son Richard did not know he had the disease but he listened closely to his mother as she made phone calls. According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Richard came into his mother’s room and said, “I know what you are working for.” His mother asked, “What am I working for, Ricky?” Unable to pronounce “cystic fibrosis,” he answered, “You are working for 65 Roses.” Today, “65 Roses” is a term often used by young children with cystic fibrosis to pronounce the name of their disease, according to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. At Hallmark’s request to pay tribute to the “65 Roses” story, designer Jacob A. Climer created 65 hand-made roses, embellished with stones and beads, and incorporated the roses into Hallmark’s train. Climer said the roses were crafted out of a mixture of new and vintage ribbons, velvets, organza and metallic fabrics. “ They surround her monogram and a bouquet of flowers,” Climer said. The bouquet on Hallmark’s train contains 14 flowers. Each flower represents one of the 14 women who are serving as ladies-in-waiting this year. “Those flowers are also the dresses the women are wearing,” Climer said, referring to each lady-in-waiting wearing a dress themed after a flower this year. “Each is a flower in the garden.” Additionally, Climer also incorporated other elements, such as birds, a bee, a dragonfly and some greenery, from the garden into the train. Elizabeth Reid Walker’s 19th birthday is one she will remember forever as it also marked the day she learned she would serve as Princess of the Texas Rose Festival. “It was such a special day,” Walker recalled. Walker, who attends the University of Texas at Austin, had come home during the first semester of her freshman year. Among the many gifts she received that day was a gift box containing bags with her initials and “2020 Texas Rose Festival Princess” on them. She also received a cake that said, “Happy Birthday, Princess.” Walker said it is an honor to serve as the Texas Rose Festival Princess, a title she has held for two

years since the 2020 event was delayed due to the pandemic. “It feels awesome to serve. Everyone’s been so patient and so nice,” she said. “It’s been a waiting game, but I think that’s made it even more worth it. Everyone has really come together and we all want the festival to return this year better than it’s ever been.” The festival’s delay gave Walker and other young women involved an opportunity to do more volunteer service. An experience at the East Texas Food Bank was especially impactful to Walker as she learned about the needs in the community and saw how the food bank operates behind the scenes.

“It’s important to volunteer just to give back to your community,” she said. “In our world today, we’ve gone through a lot as a society and at the end of the day all that we have is each other. We should give back to help each other.” Walker gives back in many other ways as well. She currently serves as the videographer and as the Favors Chairman for her sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and she served on the Rush team last summer. She is also active in the “Reading is Key” festival for the Boys and Girls Club at Wooldridge Elementary School in Austin and Food Finders of Smith County. Being part of the Texas Rose Festival is familiar to Walker. She served as an attendant in the 2007 Texas Rose Festival to Queen Grace Ramey. She also served as Tea hostess and as an Attendant Dresser in 2016 and 2017. Her family also has a long legacy with the festival, including her mother serving as a lady-in-waiting in 1988 and

on numerous committees throughout the years. Walker said the family tradition makes her service this year even more special. “This is something we’ve put a lot of work and time into and that we have also enjoyed a lot. Beyond the pageantry and the fun stuff, it feels really good to keep that family legacy going,” Walker said. Walker even incorporated a bit of her Rose Festival history into her dress this year that she will wear as princess. When she served as an attendant in 2007 to Queen Grace Ramey, butterflies were part of the theme. Walker requested to have butterflies incorporated into her dress this year, and they are – though not as the main theme. The dress, she said, is stunning. “The sketch was beautiful but it was even more fun seeing it come to life,” she said. “I got to put the full dress on with the crown this summer. It was perfect. Walker is excited to see everyone at the October festival. Duchess of the Rose Growers Milton Continues Family Legacy CHRISTINA CAVAZOS

When Emily Ann Milton is presented as Duchess of the Rose Growers, she will be carrying on a tradition that for decades has been part of her family. “It’s a great honor,” Milton said. “I think it’s more special because it’s been in my family for so many years and that I get to serve in this role 30 years after my mom. That makes it even more special to me.” Her mother, Lori Brooks Carver, served as the Duchess of the Rose Growers in 1991, and has been by her daughter’s side throughout her tenure. “She’s been there with me through all of it,”

Milton said. “She gave me advice on how to do the bow. She’s been there, helping me navigate all of it.” Milton’s family has a long history in both Tyler’s rose growing industry and in the Texas Rose Festival. Her great-grandfather, the late M. L. Brooks, and her great-grandmother, the late Mary Emily Brooks, were rose growers in Tyler for many years. Her grandfather, Robert L. Brooks, was a rose grower and processor in Tyler and an active member of the Texas Rose Research Foundation. He was the rose procurement chairman of the Texas Rose Festival’s 1983 Rose Show. Her

Rose Growers grandmother, Carolyn Brooks, was a founding member of Friends of the Rose and continues to organize annual events. Milton was at her grandparents’ home during Thanksgiving break in 2019 when she learned she would serve as the next Duchess of the Rose Growers. “I was at my grandparents’, Robert and Carolyn Brooks, home for Thanksgiving. They were hosting a big Thanksgiving dinner for the family,” she recalled. “Afterward, they gave me a huge bouquet of roses and a card that everyone had signed. The card said I was the next Duchess of the Rose Growers. It was a very sweet moment because I was surrounded by my family. I was definitely surprised.” Milton said she is excited and honored to carry on the family tradition. In addition to her mother, many other family members also have served as Duchess of the Rose Growers. Her aunt, Angie Brooks Applegate,

held the title in 1994. Her great-aunt, Jill Brooks Howard, served in the role in 1968. Her cousins, Amy Dunwoody Solberg and Leah Walters Weikel, served in the role in 2002 and in 1988, respectively. Since being named Duchess of the Rose Growers in 2019, Milton has been honored to serve for two years in the position since the Texas Rose Festival was delayed in 2020 due to the pandemic. Milton attends Baylor University in Waco, where she volunteered at a middle school as part of an after school program in which she helped tutor children. She plans to volunteer with a hospice program in Waco as well. Volunteering has always been important to Milton. A native of Tulsa, Okla., Milton volunteered with South Tulsa Baptist Church when she was younger. Today, she also volunteers through her church, Highland Baptist, in Waco. As Duchess of the Rose Growers,

She is active in the Baylor Religious Hour Choir, Baylor Medical Service Organization and Highland Baptist Church where she serves as a Community Group Leader. She is a member of Friends of the Rose and has attended Texas Rose Festival activities for many years. Milton said she is in awe of her dress. When the dress designs were first revealed, she was in Waco and saw her design via a phone screen. “Seeing it come to life, it was incredible and more than I ever expected,” she said. “I love it. It’s very heavy but it’s really beautiful and I think they did it perfectly.” Milton said she is honored to serve in this year’s Texas Rose Festival. coronation ceremony at the Cowan Center. They will also be featured in their coronation gowns riding on floats during the Rose Parade and at the Queen’s Tea, where they will interact with visitors in the Tyler Rose Garden.

Zoe Marie Bates Zoë Marie Bates, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Bates of Tyler, attends Texas A&M University where she is majoring in Sport Management with a minor in Business and is a member of Delta Zeta sorority. oung women from across the state are taking part in the Texas Rose Festival as duchesses. Traditionally they have strong ties to families from Tyler who have supported and participated in the festival for years.

These young women are formally presented during the Queen’s Coronation ceremony and also will ride on floats during the Rose Parade and greet thousands of guests who attend the Queen’s Tea in the Tyler Rose Garden.

ach time Jacob A. Climer saw a gown fitting for the Texas Rose Festival, he became more excited as the young women in the dresses helped bring his vision to life. Climer is the new designer for the Texas Rose Festival. He picks up the reins from Winn Morton, the long-time costume designer who retired after the 2019 Texas Rose Festival. “The right woman picks the right dress and each time I walked into a fitting, I’d think, ‘She has made me even more excited about this,’ ” Climer said. Originally from Dallas, Climer has been based in New York City since 2005. When growing up, he was active in music, dance and community performances. He attended an arts school in Dallas and learned about theater design while there. “My high school had a full working costume shop, where I learned about dressmaking and draping and how to finish designs,” he said.

As a designer, Climer got to be involved in “all the parts” of the plays, which he enjoyed. He went on to study Costume and Scenic Design in college. He received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Evansville and a master of fine arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University. At one of his first jobs, Climer designed costumes out of the costume shop at Southern Methodist University, where he met Morton for the first time and began learning about the Texas Rose Festival. A few years after that, he was back in the SMU costume shop, designing for the Dallas Shakespeare Festival. Since then, his career has grown and Climer has designed for renowned theaters and opera companies across the country. Highlights of his career include new musicals with John Kander and Sarah Ruhl; “Orphée” at the Des Moines Metro Opera and Portland Opera; “The Flying Dutchman” at the Atlanta Opera, Cincinnati Opera and Houston Grand Opera; and the contemporized production of “Les Misérables” at the Dallas Theater Center. When Morton announced his retirement, Climer came

Jacob A. Climer, costume designer highly recommended to the Texas Rose Festival and he’s excited to showcase his first costumes for the event this year. “This year is inspired by classic 1950s evening wear,” he said. “I’m excited to make gowns that feel like gowns and not like full architectural costumes.” In describing his aesthetic, Climer said he’s a bit of a chameleon in that he does what’s right for each project. Most of his background is in the theater and opera where he designs costumes after seeing a script. However, the Texas Rose Festival is different because the script is designed around his work instead. “None of these gowns are street wearable, but I want to make sure I’m thinking about the woman inside the dress and making sure that she shines through,” he said. Because the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the 2020 festival, Climer had a bit more time to work on the costumes; however, finding certain fabrics and other needed elements for some of

the designs was a challenge as stores and factories altered hours, capacities and, in some cases, had to shut down. Additionally, he said, the pandemic affected many of the dressmakers on the team as they couldn’t have staff around due to social distancing. Some fittings were also done via phone due to travel restrictions. Despite the challenges, Climer succeeded in producing the beautiful dresses for one of the largest Texas Rose Festivals in history. Climer said there are 53 women in this year’s event, which is among the largest. He’s eager for the East Texas community to see his designs come to life at the Rose Festival and he’s also excited to be part of future events. “We plan to stay a team for as long as we can,” Climer said, referring to his relationship with the Texas Rose Festival. “We have already started early talks about the next festival and I’m excited to learn more.”

iving back to the community is a hallmark of the Texas Rose Festival, and that trait was exhibited even more so this year. When the festival was delayed by one year, the young women serving as part of this year’s rose royalty chose to spend more time volunteering in the community as part of their service. They served at the East Texas Food Bank, PATH and Meals on Wheels, among other places. “Having the opportunity to serve others is a priority. I believe it’s what we’re supposed to do,” said Liz Ballard, executive director and museum curator for the Texas Rose Festival Association. “It’s great for the community to see that they are definitely willing to be ambassadors for the city and help volunteer for multiple organizations that need community service.” Texas Rose Festival Queen Anna Grace Hallmark said she enjoyed volunteering and that it was an “eye-opening” experience for her. “I didn’t realize how much of a need there was in the community until I had the opportunity to volunteer,” she said. “It was a really good experience.” Hallmark said she believes “it’s good to give back to your community.” That’s been

a hallmark characteristic of the Texas Rose Festival for many years. The Texas Rose Festival offers scholarships to deserving students in East Texas. The Rose Festival partners with the University of Texas at Tyler and pays full tuition, including room and board, for two Rose Scholars each year. Additionally, the Texas Rose Festival supports the Tyler Police Foundation and makes a monetary contribution to a charity of choice for speakers at the Rose Festival luncheons. Participants in the Texas Rose Festival also are encouraged in their volunteer service. When the festival was delayed, Ballard said it offered an extended opportunity to focus on service to the community. It was a learning experience for many of the young women who participate in the festival. “The court members learned first hand how valuable it is to serve in our local non-profits and I hope it will build a calling to continue to serve in their future,” she said.
