A NOTE FROM RPI PROMOTIONS
The calves are hitting the ground. The end of February and first part of March is a very popular time for calving. We have noticed a number of bred cattle selling higher that are to calve in April this year. The last couple of years many commercial cattlemen have been backing off from the March 1st calving date. A number of cattlemen have been able to utilize winter grazing for most of the year. We have been fortunate in our country to have had the use of winter pastures and have not had to put out as much feed. Although taking bull pictures in the middle of February found us working in one of the three coldest days in the past 30 plus years of working with bulls as it was -20 degrees. Everyone at the ranch was glad to have no wind that day. We want to remind everyone to double check for safety. No farm/ranch situation is worth risking the lives of those you work and live with. Take that extra few seconds to check all directions for people and vehicles. Know where your co-workers and family members are at all times. The demand for top genetics has kept the bull sale market higher than we all expected. Sales have been great. We have also witnessed more bull buyers on the seats at the sales that we have worked. The weather might be one of the main reasons for higher attendance, but we have seen a large number of older bulls go through the sale barns this past year. This looks to be a year where ranchers who usually buy 2-3 bulls each year need more bulls to fill their herd bull battery. There are bulls for sale! We all know that, and you have plenty of options on where to buy your bulls. As you look through this month’s Cattlemen’s Invite, the quality and genetics run deep. Years and years of mating the best cattle have produced the bulls that have been produced and for sale in this issue. We invite you to give the producers a call and talk about your needs. Let them help you get the best product for your bull dollars. There is more and more genetic information offered all the time for you to use when making bull purchases. We suggest you utilize this information as a purchasing tool, but lets not loose sight of phenotype in our cattle. The region we work in has the best phenotypical calves that go to market every year. We are coming into a time when this market could really explode. Let’s have the best product as we move forward with our cowherd and the calves we sell next fall! We are traveling the country visiting with many seed stock producers, and if you’re looking for a certain type and kind, give us a call. We would be glad to help.
