À chaque édition du Festival, Cannes attire le monde du cinéma sur sa célèbre Croisette. Loin de l’effervescence des marches du Palais, le Carlton Cannes offre une parenthèse confidentielle.

Dans ses couloirs et ses salons, les icônes du septième art se croisent en toute intimité. Entre deux projections, des projets prennent vie, des scénarios s'ébauchent et des liens se tissent. Il y a le Cannes des écrans et le Cannes secret de la Grande Dame : une version glamour qui échappe aux caméras, mais que ses hôtes n’oublient jamais.

BEYOND THE RED CARPET. With each edition of its Festival, Cannes invites the movie world to return to the famous Croisette. Far from the vivacious buzz on the steps before Le Palais, Carlton Cannes provides a discreet, insider haven. In its hallways and lounges, icons of the Seventh Art rub shoulders in all privacy. Between two screenings, projects are born, scenarios sketched out, new ties are forged. There is the Cannes of the big screen and the secret Cannes of “La Grande Dame”: a version of glamour that eludes the cameras but is never forgotten by its guests.

Figure emblématique du cinéma français de renommée internationale, Juliette Binoche prend la présidence du Jury du 78e Festival de Cannes, succédant ainsi à la réalisatrice américaine Greta Gerwig. Le festival connaîtra, pour la seconde fois de son histoire, une passation de flambeau prestigieuse entre deux femmes. L’actrice embrasse ce rôle avec humilité, quarante ans après sa première montée des marches en 1985 pour le film Rendez-vous d’André Téchiné.

An icon of French cinema who has won international renown, Juliette Binoche is President of the Jury for the 78th Cannes Film Festival, succeeding American director Greta Gerwig. For the second time in its history, the Festival witnesses a prestigious handing down of the torch from one woman to another. The actress embraces this role in all humility, 40 years after first mounting the steps in 1985 for the André Téchiné movie Rendez-vous.

Juliette Binoche se plaît à le dire : elle est « née au Festival de Cannes », soulignant l’indéfectible lien qui l’unit à la Croisette. De fait, depuis ses débuts, l’actrice n’a cessé de briller à l’écran, collaborant avec des cinéastes de renom tels que Michael Haneke (Caché, 2005), David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis, 2012), Olivier Assayas (Sils Maria, 2014), Leos Carax (Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, 1991), Hirokazu Kore-eda (La Vérité, 2019) ou encore Abbas Kiarostami, dont le film Copie conforme lui valut le Prix d’interprétation féminine à Cannes en 2010. Forte de quelque 70 films et 40 années de curiosité artistique, sa carrière s’apparente à un voyage cinématographique traversant les genres, les sujets et les sensibilités. Une polyvalence saluée par les plus prestigieuses récompenses : Oscar, Bafta, César, prix d’interprétation à Berlin et Venise, et bien d’autres. C'est donc avec une légitimité évidente que son nom résonnera une fois de plus sur la Croisette lors du prochain festival.

Juliette Binoche likes to say that she was “born at the Cannes Film Festival”, confirming her on-going bond with the Croisette. Since she started out, the actress has continued to captivate audiences, working with renowned movie-makers such as Michael Haneke (Caché, 2005), David Cronenberg (Cosmopolis, 2012), Olivier Assayas (Sils Maria, 2014), Leos Carax (Les Amants du Pont-Neuf, 1991), Hirokazu Kore-eda (La Vérité, 2019) and Abbas Kiarostami, whose movie Copie conforme won her the Prize for Best Actress in Cannes in 2010. Comprised of some 70 films and 40 years of artistic curiosity, her career conjures up a cinematic journey crossing genres, subjects and sensibilities. Versatility acknowledged by the most prestigious awards: Oscar, Bafta, César, Best Actress in Berlin and Venice, and many more. In this new festival, it is thus quite right that her name should resonate once again on the Croisette.
