MPSTMA SPRING WORKSHOP

On March 8, more than 190 MPSTMA members and guests gathered at the University of Northwestern/St. Paul for the annual MPSTMA Spring Workshop. Speakers for the event included: Sam Bauer, UM Turfgrass Extension; Coby Schmucker, DuraEdge; Bryan Zlimen, Zlimen & McGuiness, and Tim Van Loo, Iowa State and current STMA president. Members also gave presentations on projects and innovations of theirs. The MPSTMA would also like to thank the hosts from the University of Northwestern which include MPSTMA members Jeff Hintz, Tim Kelson and J.T. Fenton. Kudos to the Spring Workshop Committee, too, for putting together a solid lineup of speakers. The workshop was made possible by great vendor support. MPSTMA NETWORK PICNICS TOWN & COUNTRY FENCE HOSTS ANNUAL JUNE OPEN HOUSE FOR MPSTMA MEMBERS/VENDORS On June 6, MPSTMA members and customers of Town & Country Fence attended a Network Picnic/Customer Appreciation Day at Town & Country Fence in Brooklyn Park. This event is getting bigger every year. Vendors were present with tabletop displays. Attendees, as always, were treated to lunch and gifts from Town & Country Fence. This half indoor/half outdoor lunch time get together is held annually on the second Tuesday of June from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All MPSTMA members are invited to attend. MISKIMEN AND CITY OF BURNSVILLE HOST SEPTEMBER NETWORK PICNIC On September 20, Paul Miskimen, Parks Crew Leader for the City of Burnsville, hosted a Network Picnic and 45 members attended. The picnic was held at Lac Lavon Park in the center

of "the wheel." Miskimen welcomed the crowd and gave talked about the Burnsville facility. The City of Burnsville just completed a site renovation of its softball field complexes. Miskimen noted that they put in a new concession stand, field fencing, dugout roofs and a new irrigation system using the Toro Sentinel controller. Garrett Beck, Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Director for the City of Burnsville, addressed the crowd and gave a short history of Lac Lavon Park. Lunch was catered by Davanni’s. Any member interested in hosting a picnic for MPSTMA should contact the MPSTMA office. The best months to host are April, May, September and October. On October 18, Rick Beane, Parks Superintendent for the City of St. Louis Park, and his staff, hosted a Network Picnic at the St. Louis Park Rec Center that more than 50 people attended. The City of SLP recently completed its "covered" outdoor rink adjacent to the Rec Center. Plenty of barbecued Ribs were served for lunch. All MPSTMA network picnics are free for members to attend and enjoy a couple hours networking, learning what others are doing in the area and eating eating a nice lunch.

CHAPTER CLASH 2017 MINNESOTA / IOWA CHAPTER CLASH MPSTMA members from the Twin Cities played golf matches against Iowa sports turf managers on July 21 at North Links Golf Course in North Mankato for the Chapter Clash trophy. Iowa won three matches to Minnesota's two in a 2person scramble, match-play format. In a deciding match, Tim Van Loo, CSFM, current President of the Sports Turf Managers Association, and his playing partner Randy "Boom Boom" Robinson, defeated Mike McDonald, CSFM, MPSTMA Chapter Clash Chairman, and Jeff Turtinen, MPSTMA Executive Secretary, 3 & 2. The match was even going into ninth hole when Van Loo chipped in for birdie and a 1-up lead. Two holes later, the Minnesota duo inexplicably three putted to go 2down and never got closer. Chapter Clash hosts Bruce Leivermann and Seth Langager, both from Minnesota State University, made the local arrangements with the golf course and provided an after-golf dinner where the Minnesota Vikings training camp in Mankato was set to begin. Wisconsin plans to participate in 2018. A centrallylocated golf course is being pursued that would be equidistant for Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota travelers.

MINNESOTA TURF AND GROUNDS FOUNDATION The Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation (MTGF), a non-profit organization, is a partnership of seven turf-and grounds-related associations and the University of Minnesota. As a member of the Minnesota Park and Sports Turf Managers Association you are also considered a member of the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation and will receive MTGF CLIPPINGS, a bi-annual magazine produced by the MTGF documenting the turf and grounds research being done at the Unviversity of Minnesota and elsewhere. FIELD DAY In 2018, the Turf & Grounds Field Day will be back on the St. Paul campus on Thurs., Aug. 9 at this year as the University of Minnesota once again partnered with the Minnesota Turf and Grounds Foundation to produce the popular event at TROE Cen-
ter, the UM Trial Gardens and UFore Nursery. The Field Day will be presented by University of Minnesota faculty and staff working in turfgrass science and horticulture and will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. with presentation topics ranging from turfgrass species for natural areas to disease management in turf and trees. MTGF SPONSORED WINTER PRUNING WORKSHOPS FOCUS ON TREE PRESERVATION Nearly six dozen arborists, landscape managers, parks workers, and maintenance staff joined University of Minnesota scientists and professional arborists to learn more about pruning trees from planting to maturity in January, February, and March 2017. Workshops at both the Saint Paul and Duluth Campuses stressed the importance for timely and effective tree
pruning beginning at planting and carrying forward into maturity. Registration information can be obtained at www.mtgf.org. LAWN CARE FORUM The 2017 MNLA/MTGF Lawn Care Forum took place on June 15 and featured University of Minnesota Turfgrass Extension speakers who included Sam Bauer, Dr. Eric Watkins, Dr. Brian Horgan, Jonas Reyes, Jon Trappe and Andy Hollman. Attendees had the opportunity to spend a half-day outside at the University of Minnesota Turfgrass Research, Outreach and Education (TROE) Center -approximately 10 acres of turfgrass research. The event was an opportunity to see current turfgrass research and to become informed on emerging trends in lawn care.
MPSTMA TOUR-ON-WHEELS At the 2017 MPSTMA Tour-on-Wheels, more than 60 MPSTMA members gathered on a nice, summer morning at the Union Station parking lot, close to St. Paul's CHS Field, and enjoyed coffee and donuts. The group then ventured six blocks to Union Station to Board the Metro Green Line Light Rail destined for US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. The group arrived at US Bank Stadium at 9 a.m. and toured the Vikings' stadium for about two hours seeing the best suites, underneath the stadium and the playing field. The football field was covered due to "A Taste of Vikings" event scheduled for later on in the day. The entrourage then went outside and looked at East Park which was across the street from the stadium. Peterson Companies, a MPSTMA Commercial Member Company, had a lot to do with how the park turned out. The group boarded the Metro Green Line Light Rail and headed back to CHS Field to tailgate before attending a 1:05 p.m. Saints baseball game. Light Rail tickets, a baseball game ticket, pop, water, hot dogs, brats and chips were provided by the Minnesota Park and Sports Turf Managers Association with financial support from St. Croix Recreation.

MPSTMA FALL WORKSHOP On November 15, MPSTMA members spent the day at The City of Plymouth’s Plymouth Creek Center, learning from speakers and networking with peers and vendors. Beginning at 7 am, with a sponsored breakfast from Equinox Environmental Products and Hirshfield's Paints, members gathered and enjoyed cameraderie, coffee and pastries in a large room where 20 vendors displayed on tabletops and had outside demo’s. Midwest Groundcover, MTI Distributing Inc., and St. Croix Recreation sponsored lunch. Brooke Asleson, State of Minnesota, led the morning off with a talk about 'Salt' - a relevant topic for this group and the upcoming winter season. Fred Kolkmann, Kolkmann Tennis and Sports Surfaces LLC, was next on the agenda. Kolkmann spoke about the construction and maintenance of tennis courts and pickleball courts. Pickleball is becoming a very popular recreational activity in Minnesota. Jeff Hahn, University of Minnesota Extension Entomologist, updated members on Japanese Beetles. Larry DiVito, Target Field/Minnesota Twins, and Roger Weinbrenner CSFM, University of St. Thomas talked and showed slides of the St. Johns/St. Thomas football

game that took place in the fall at Target Field. They talked about what it took to convert the baseball field into a football field. Keynote Speaker Ross Bernstein, pictured above by the screen, engaged the audience with a 70-minute talk about his experiences with professional athletes while writing more than 50 books. Jeff Fischer, Pioneer Athletics, and Bill Hachmeister, Aquatics, concluded the day in two separate break-out sessions. Fischer spoke on Artificial Turf and Hachmeister gave a talk about Splash Pads.
MPSTMA COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT Each year, the MPSTMA spends a day renovating a playing field in Minnesota. All MPSTMA members are encouraged to participate. This is a great way to learn hands-on what it takes to renovate a baseball field, build a pitcher mound, how to prepare the area around home plate including the batter’s box and other maintenance practices. The MPSTMA partnered with representatives from the home field of the Hamel Hawks. The Hamel field fit in well with the capabilities of what MPSTMA volunteers can handle in one day. On April 26, 2017, MPSTMA spent a day (in the rain) at Fortin Memorial Field in Hamel and renovated the pitcher mound, homeplate and set the bases. Other planned projects on the field could not be performed because of rain and very wet grounds. Do you have a field that needs renovating? Go to www.mpstma.org/csp.htm to fill out an application.
