MPSTMA YEAR IN REVIEW The MPSTMA new year began on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at its Annual Meeting during the Northern Green at the Minneapolis Convention Center. At this meeting, the MPSTMA Board of Directors finalized the election of four new Board Members along with Josh Gerth, CGCS, Bethel University, taking over the reigns from Matt Grosjean, CGCS, as MPSTMA President for 2019. NORTHFIELD’S MEMORIAL FIELD WINSTURFCO/MPSTMA FIELD OF YEAR. The 2018 award was presented to Tracy Closson,Northfield Public Schools, holding the award. Greg Brodd, far right, Turfco Manufacturing,presented the honor at the 2019 Northern Green at the Minneapolis Convention Center on January 14. Brodd noted that “Memorial Field exemplifies the type of product all in our industry work and strive to achieve. This is the 9th year Turfco has presented this award to a member of the MPSTMA. MPSTMA SPRING WORKSHOP
UNIVERSITY OF NORTHWESTERN - ST. PAUL, MN MARCH 13, 2019 Ross Kurcab, a Sports Field Consultant from Denver, Colorado, was the 2019 MPSTMA Spring Workshop Keynote Speaker on March 13 at the University of Northwestern in St. Paul. However, Kurcab addressed the workshop attendees from Denver. At the 2019 national STMA conference in Arizona, members of the MPSTMA Board of Directors approached Kurcab with the idea of speaking to Minnesotans remotely from Colorado. Kurcab was all for it. Kurcab has spent 30 years as head turf manager for the Denver Broncos Football Club. In the photo at the right, Kurcab, pictured lower left on the screen was able to interact with the St. Paul Spring Workshop crowd from his office in Denver. Spring Workshop Chairman, Roger Weinbrenner, CSFM, served as moderator. It was a first for MPSTMA and a first for Kurcab. The session went well and MPSTMA will likely explore this option again. A Roundtable session took place. Mark Kruse, CSFM, City of Lakeville provided a variety of information about GPS use around the city. Doug Erickson, SEMA Equipment, was also on hand with good information. Theresa Bayrer, gave a talk about Plant Growth Stimulants. Kristina Walker, Ph.D., traveled across state from the University of Minnesota at Crookston, about a five hour drive, to address the MPSTMA group with news about her MTGF-funded
project. This session focused on how the Turf Management and Sport Recreation Management Programs at the University of Minnesota/Crookston are creating pre-game field safety and maintenance checklists for football and soccer fields to improve turf field conditions to reduce the risk of player injuries. Special thanks to Jeff Hintz and the staff at the University of Northwestern for annually hosting our Spring Workshop.

MPSTMA TOUR-ON-WHEELS
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA ATHLETE’S VILLAGE & SPORTS FIELDS JUNE 19, 2019 On June 19, about 40 MPSTMA members took advantage of the opportunity to tour the new sports facilities and sports fields at the University of Minnesota. This year, the tour was done on foot as members walked around the East Bank of the University of Minnesota and made stops at the outdoor baseball, softball and football fields along with the brand new, state-of-the-art Athletes Village and Track & Field facilities. Funded entirely by ongoing private fundraising and athletics revenue - no taxpayer or tuition money - the Athletes Village opened in January 2018 and added
Ten to some of the best in the nation. Gopher Athletics also have opened a new outdoor track and field stadium, a new golf practice facility, and a new wrestling facility, along with continued renovations in Bierman and Gibson- Nagurski to improve facilities for many additional Gopher

FOREST HILLS GOLF COURSE - LA CROSSE, WI JULY 17, 2019
The 2019 Chapter Clash took place at Forest Hills Golf Course in LaCrosse, WI, on July 17th between members of the MPSTMA and the Wisconsin STMA. This year’s Chapter Clash was sponsored by Turfix. Minnesota won the 2-man Scramble format 272-279. Five scores counted for both sides. Iowa STMA was
not represented year. After lunch, participants engaged in blindfolded striping and mowing contests. The Chapter Clash golf is open to all members. Contact the MPSTMA office if you’d like to participate in 2020. Tournament date is yet to be determined.

NATIONAL SPORTS CENTER, BLAINE, MN JULY 24, 2019 On July 24, MPSTMA vendors made themselves available for the 2019 MPSTMA Demo Day held at the National Sports Center in Blaine. MPSTMA COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT MEMORIAL FIELD - OSSEO, MN SEPTEMBER 25, 2019
Each year, the MPSTMA spends a day renovating a playing field in Minnesota. All MPSTMA members are encouraged to participate. This is a great way to learn hands-on what it takes to renovate a baseball field, build a mound, how to prepare the area around home plate including the batter’s box and other maintenance practices. Mike McDonald, a certified Sports Field Manager at TCF Bank Stadium annually has led a group of volunteers to renovate a sports field in Minnesota as a Community Service Project for the past decade. On September 25, more than 30 people volunteered their time and efforts at this year's MPSTMA Community Service Project at Memorial Field in Osseo. A special thanks to our participating vendors. Without their help and equipment, not nearly as much would have been accomplished. Tom Groh and his staff from Minnesota Sodding Company went beyond what was expected. MPSTMA FALL WORKSHOP
BRACKETT’S CROSSING COUNTRY CLUB - LAKEVILLE, MN NOVEMBER 13, 2019 The MPSTMA Fall Workshop took place on Nov. 13 at Brackett's Crossing Country Club in Lakeville and had 203 registrants. The Workshop featured speakers on relevant topics for Park Supervisors, Sports Turf Managers and their staffs. Commercial members provided tabletop displays of their products, equipment and services. The Workshop began at 7 am with an hour of socializing and networking with peers and vendors along with a Continental Breakfast sponsored by St. Croix Recreation, Superior Tech Products and Midwest Groundcover Express Blower Service. The trio of companies also helped sponsor lunch. In the main ballroom, Travis Gannon, North Carolina State University offered a webinar focusing on the use of pesticide on athletic fields. At the same time, in the Pearl Room, Joel Muller, League of Minnesota Cities gave a talk about onboarding and training new staff. After those sessions, the ballroom featured a Minnesota State Patrol Officer updating the audience on new roadway laws and roadway safety. Joe Churchill spoke about a proactive approach to high performing ball field maintenance, at the same time in the Pearl Room. A mid-morning break to spend time with peers and vendors took place before lunch. After lunch, Nick Ryan, Assistant Superintendent at Brackett's Crossing, talked about the massive resodding and course renovation that took place at Brackett's Crossing during 2019. Keynote Speaker Glen Mason entertained the audience with stories about his Golden Gopher days as a coach and a question/answer session. To wrap things up, Mark Kruse and Mac Cafferty, both from the City of Lakeville talked about the Lakeville's case study: Low Grow, Low Input fescue. Discussion followed. After the event, a number of people ventured to Rock Hard Landscape Supply's social hour at their new yard in Farmington.
