Welcome to the October edition
room window to watch my Dad and Uncle try to light a box of reasonably cute fireworks. I’ve always been quite sensitive to loud noises, so a few sparklers and colourful whizzes were fine for me. One incident we’ll never forget in our house though, was when the Catherine Wheel shrieked and set fire to the fence…that was probably the last time we had a Firework display! Unfortunately, my next column might mention that dreaded ‘C’ word we’ve been avoided for the past 10 months. I for one though am very excited! It’s my most favourite time of the year. Until then, enjoy the wonderful Autumn season while it’s here, stay safe on Bonfire Night and stay out of trouble on Mischievous Night!

October is here and that can only mean one thing. Pumpkins, pops and bangs! We’ve never really celebrated Halloween in our house. It’s huge over in America, with huge haunted houses, decorations all over the place and enough ‘candy’ to fill a room in the house. Their traditions slowly make their way over to the UK, I suppose, some Brits even taking part in Thanksgiving I hear! But with Halloween for our house, I’ve never been trick or treating or to the local ‘Halloween disco’ as a child. It was a bit too spooky for me… You always get the people who go over the top with decorations (you know that one house on your street!) and leave the plastic, fluffy cobwebs entangled around their bushes for months after. ‘It’ll do for Christmas that…it can be snow!’ Not forgetting the little lovelies that come around to your door in the evening, all dressed in their ‘scary’ costumes and faces painted to the max in an oily substance. Now, there are two types of citizens during that evening; the ones who happily answer the door, giving the kids a little ‘boo!’ and handing out handfuls of delicious chewy sweets, OR, the ones who turn out all the lights and dive straight under the table once they hear the little knock on the door until the kiddies go to the next house. I know which one I am! A few days after the pumpkins have turned to soup and the costumes have been hung up, you get that dreadful loud banging every night for the next week or so… We used to have a little Bonfire Night celebration at my house when I was little. Family would come around for pie and peas, and we’d gather round the front

Pat’s Garden Can I talk about slugs? When I was a small child, slugs were black, the thickness of a pencil and as long as a child’s finger. Not now though! In ever increasing amounts, I have discovered large (the size of a sausage), orange (I’m talking goldfish colour) slugs! Can they even be classed as slugs? Or are they some alien life form from another planet? What on earth can they be eating to become so colourful? Anyway I digress, October brings a change to the weather, this in turn brings change to our plants. Beautiful colours of Autumn leaves; red, orange, yellow, russet.
All tumbling to Earth like a crispy layer of carpet. BUT! They also cover a multitude of sins; cat droppings being a major one in my garden! Raking leaves has never been so stressful. One little kitty present and the rake becomes a smelly, gruesome weapon- to wipe or not to wipe. Cutting plants back at this sleepy time of year holds its own game of thorns. Good gloves are a perfect present for yourself. So stay safe in your garden as you prepare for the hibernation season and keep your eyes open for orange slugs and hidden surprises.

Netball captain nets a place with Leeds Rhinos Barnsley College’s Sports Academy netball captain, Megan Atkinson, has successfully completed a trial to join Leeds Rhinos Netball Club. Megan will train with the club every week as part of the Leeds Rhinos Futures Hub which is designed to improve the athletes’ overall game by focusing on specific skills and technical training as well as offering opportunities for friendlies and competitive games. The College has recently developed a partnership with Leeds
Rhinos, which will see the prestigious Yorkshire club use the state-of-theart facilities at the Honeywell campus as a training hub. Megan, 17, who studies Level 3 Sport at College, said: “The College’s Netball Coach, Amy, mentioned that the College had developed a partnership with Leeds Rhinos and it gave the team an opportunity to trial for them. I trialled in Bradford and I was successful! I’m looking forward to starting and working on my skills, hopefully I can progress further into their
Academy system. “The College has helped me so much. I didn’t play netball until I came here and Amy’s been amazing. She’s put us all through our paces and I’ve learnt a lot. Cooking Corner Hot buttered toast! How do you eat yours? Are you a porridge person? Do you add fruit or jam from your pantry or honey? Or are you a 'full English' type with rashers of crispy bacon, eggs from the farm shop and a trusty tin of beans. However you start your day, now is the time for those warming breakfast dishes. Nothing can beat the smell of delicious aromas drifting through the home on these dark mornings. Whether you rush to catch a slurp of tea and a mouthful of toast, or take a more leisurely approach with 'proper' coffee and a sit down feast, the first meal of the day wakes us with a smile before we begin to eat. Scents of certain foods take us back to memories we may have forgotten. Breakfast cereal with warm milk reminds me of being a child, condensation on the windows and a roaring coal fire to warm my toes by. So, let's keep it simple, a healthy breakfast to start your day and hopefully make some memories.

Yorkshire Psychotherapy A recent study by the Mental Health Foundation, Surviving or Thriving? The state of the UK’s mental health, on the mental wellbeing of Briton’s, found that 65% of the sample population have experienced mental health problems. More than a quarter (26%) have had a panic attack and 42% said they have had depression. Personally, I think that this is only the tip of the iceberg. Ok, I’m going to say it…life is tough. It never runs smoothly. We all suffer losses, difficult changes, traumas and are often very negative about ourselves. No wonder most of us struggle at times. I meet lots of people in the course of my work. The majority of people who walk through my door feel lost, ashamed that they are struggling and have had to access professional help. This is where the
nation’s problems lie. If we could embrace mental health as something that affects us all, then maybe the stigma surrounding it would reduce. Maybe then, people would feel more confident in saying “I need help”, early on, before they sink into depression or struggle with anxiety symptoms. I have worked in the mental health field since 1994 (I can’t believe it’s that long!) and, I hope, have helped lots of people along the way. Over the years, I have had my own battles to face; traumas, relationship breakups, traumatic bereavements,
work stressors and ultimately, episodes of depression and anxiety. I have had therapy, to help me deal with these things, which has made me stronger, more empathetic to others difficulties and shaped who I am as a person and a therapist. I don’t know about you, but I can honestly say that I don’t see mental health difficulties as a sign of weakness at all. I see them as a sign of strength in a person. I like to think I’m a stronger person because of what I’ve been through and I hope, if you’re reading this, that you’ll recognise your own strength too.

Jolly Boys’ Brewery talks about IPA Not so many years ago if you walked into a bar and asked for a pint of IPA or India Pale Ale it is very likely that the bar tender would have not known what you were talking about. In 2019, any decent real ale house will no doubt have a cask on the bar and maybe a keg or two. Not to mention the cans in the fridge. During our monthly interview with Jolly Boys’ Brewery we asked for some light shedding upon the matter. “As you’d expect there are a few theories about the origin of IPAs. Most thirsty scholars agree that it dates back to the 1780s when British rule in India presented a problem. India was way too hot to brew ale yet thirsty British soldiers and workers dreamed of a good old British pint. At that point a brewer from London called Hodges brewed a hoppy, stronger beer that would be able to last the long, hot journey without going off” Said director and brewer, Ondrie Mann. “Both London and Burton based brewers wanted a slice of that market so they quickly brewed beers with more hops in them to preserve the ale. These beers actually improved with age and would have tasted similar to bitters though, much more hoppy”. Following India becoming independent from British rule demand for IPA fell away. That was the end of IPAs or so we thought. In the USA in the 1920s, prohibition and the ban on alcohol all but ended brewing as people resorted to moonshine as it was easier to conceal. So in the 1970s when brewing become popular again in the USA, many of the new microbreweries took the IPA concept and made it their own. “Hops from the United States are very different to the English Fuggles and East Kent Goldings. They have some really fruity, citrusy and floral hops which have revolutionised the concept and taste of the IPA”. In recent years many British breweries have developed their
own IPAs. Some IPAs are more traditionally British. For many, however, IPA means a wellbalanced ale between 5 and 7 %ABV. Generously hopped with hops from the USA or possibly New Zealand. “We brewed a beautiful IPA with high quality hops from the USA and the customers loved it. But at 5.5% some of our customers felt it was a little strong so we toned it down to 4.8% to suit local tastes. Then we named it Yorkshire Pale Ale or YPA to reflect that Yorkshire folk had added their own chapter to the story of this ever evolving beer. We even put a cricket match and a whippet on our pump clip. How Yorkshire does it get? We are currently brewing the Jolly IPA in the colder months so look out for that one”. As breweries continue to innovate in the spirit of Hodges and the USA micro-breweries from the 1970s. IPA began life as a solution to a challenge yet has continued to adapt and evolve. Without doubt IPAs will be on the

Granny Norbag I always love autumn. I think it’s in my top five seasons of the year. I love riding my mobility scooter through the fallen leaves and collecting conkers. Not that children get to play with conkers these days.. you know with all these crazy health and safety rules. I’ve been very busy recently. I had two fantastic school visits in September and got to work with the brilliant children at Wath Victoria Primary and Rawmarsh Sandhill Primary schools. They all proved that they have what it takes to write their own books one day. My bid to become the next Ariana Grandma continues too. With the help of William Price of Tunedin

The Church of Felkirk St. Peter – Uncovering the Mystery
So, it’s been some weeks since I did my first piece on the Church of Felkirk St. Peter and a few days ago, armed with my notebook and camera I went back for a second visit to ask more questions and attempt to unravel the history of the building as many have tried to do in the past. Once again, I was warmly greeted by the ‘Friends of Felkirk’ and after a delicious cup of tea in the Elizabethan Schoolroom I set off to investigate. The first thing that struck me was how isolated and imposing the Church looks, standing virtually alone in what must be 30 acres of land. I tried to imagine what it must have been like prior to the first 11th Century stone building that was constructed on the same site where the original wooden church burnt to the ground. It would certainly have been much smaller being made of wooden planks and most probably surrounded by numerous
ango-saxon hamlets of early Christian worshippers. What is certain is that Felkirk has stood through time, surviving civil wars, dissolution, reformation, plague, not to mention the elements and incredibly is still a ‘working’ church! Slowly, making my way round to the South Porch, (main entrance), noting the dates on nearby gravestones, 16th & 17th Century, I came across an empty stone coffin. Made of Jurassic Limestone with fossil cells in it’s matrix, the limestone is believed to have been quarried in Lincolnshire and carved to shape so it must have been crafted for an ‘important’ person and folklore tells us it was probably used to bury Sir John de Hoderode. The coffin was discovered under the nave during restoration work in 1875 but it was
empty? Another mystery! By the side of the coffin lies a cross slab grave cover that dates back to the 12 Century. Unbelievable! The South Porch itself is of mid/late 14 Century construction. It comprises of

There are two notches either side of the porch entrance and I was told these would have probably held wooden poles to stop grazing animals entering the church. I really did have to chuckle when my guide pointed out the permanent carved graffiti of 1772!! Upon entering the Church, I noticed to my left, an old pew. The marquetry is beautiful and dates back to the 16th Century. It was the pew of the Galway family. I was taken aback at the Saxon masonry, 11th Century Font, (apparently discarded in a field by the Victorians, and used as a water trough for cattle), and 13th Century Arches. It was pointed out to me if you look up as soon as you enter the Church there’s
more to see! Above the 13th Century arches, which originally were part of the external wall where the former entrance used to be, are corbels that support the roof. Each one is carved with a grotesque or funny face. My guide told me these would have been to ward off evil spirits to protect the worshippers inside. I was shown the old door to the bell tower and the old West Door which don’t appear to be chronicled anywhere and the Friends of Felkirk are desperate to get wood dating experts to visit to give opinions. Do you know of anyone that could help? I’m going to finish here as I don’t want to sound like a guidebook! Incidentally, the official guidebooks are on sale in Church for a mere £2.50 with profits going towards the vast expense of maintenance.

What’s On Pears & Apples: The Botanical Illustrations of Elisabeth Dowle Cannon Hall Museum On now - 3 November Elisabeth Dowle is one of the world’s most respected and talented Botanical Artists. For the very first time her beautiful watercolours of Pears & Apples will be on display in the elegant exhibition rooms at Cannon Hall Museum. These life size plates were painted from fruits from the National Collection and were used to illustrate “The Book of Pears” by Joan Morgan and “The New Book of Apples” by Joan Morgan and Alison Richards. Using archive photographs from the Cannon Hall Collection and a specially commissioned film the exhibition aims to make the connection with the Cannon Hall Historic pear collection, walled gardens and parkland. Barnsley Markets 1982 - 1987 Barnsley Civic On now – January 2020 Barnsley Market has formed an integral part of the town’s life for centuries. Though the market has changed appearance and location many times one thing has always remained consistent; the people. Many locals will have fond memories of the traders and characters who frequented the market over the years. One of those well-known characters was amateur photographer Harry Brookes. Over a period of five decades, Harry documented the changing face of the market, its traders and the shoppers. His love of the market community and interest in local history led Harry to take over 1000 photographs, many of which were donated to Barnsley Archives. This exhibition displays a selection of Harry’s pictures which span a six year period of 1982 – 1987.
North: Fashioning Identity Barnsley Civic On now – 21 December North: Fashioning Identity explores the way the North of England is depicted, constructed and celebrated in select photographs, artworks and fashion collections. The show brings together visions of the North, unpicking themes that appear regularly in design and media. It considers truth, myth and the spaces in-between. Featuring over 100 photographs, alongside fashion garments and artworks, the exhibition positions documentary work dating back over eighty years next to more recent
style media. This exhibition is both about the style and cultural heritage of the North, and the ways in which the ideals of it – the clothes, the music, the smells, the houses, the men, the women, the communities – have spread and, in turn, been shaped by others through visual representations. It is about the evolution of tradition, character and identity as much as it is about photography and fashion. Featured artists include Alasdair McLellan, Corinne Day, Mark Leckey, Jeremy Deller, Alice Hawkins, Paul Smith, Virgil Abloh, Peter Saville, Stephen Jones, Gareth Pugh, Nick Knight, Glen Luchford, Jamie Hawkesworth, Shirley Baker, John Bulmer and Peter Mitchell, plus many others.
Pumpkin Wizadry School Cannon Hall Farm 19-31 October Come to the Cannon Hall Farm Pumpkin Festival this October and have a magical experience as the farm invites young witches and wizards to join the fun of its Wizardry School. Coffee Boy and USC next for Glass Works Staying on the subject of The Glass Works, it’s been announced that Coffee Boy and USC – as part of a new Sports Direct shop – are opening in Tarn centre. I know what you’re thinking – do we really need another coffee shop?! And I’d agree – but I’ve been doing a bit of digging and I’ve found out that Coffee Boy does much more than coffee! It does all sorts of food and drink; paninis, pizzas, ice cream, smoothies – you name it! Coffee Boy will have the big unit that used to be Carphone Warehouse opposite where Thornton’s used to be – and it will be open before Christmas!
It’s nice to see another new name in Tarn! Sports Direct will open in 2021 when The Glass Works is nearly finished. And I know we’ve already got one – but the new one will be over two floors and bring its fashion arm – USC – with it. Na I have to admit, I do like USC, it’s brilliant for men’s and women’s fashion. It’s exactly what we need in Barnsley and will be a welcome addition. Things are really progressing now and I think it’s about time we showed some positivity about what’s happening in Barnsley!
I have to admit, I’m PROPER gutted that Daniel Stendel has left Barnsley. He had us laking some of the best football I’ve ever seen down at Oakwell. It came as a massive surprise. I know we haven’t been playing well this season and results haven’t been great, but what’s he meant to do when our best players are sold and the ones who come in aren’t experienced at this level? He hasn’t been supported by the board. Simple as that. And I have to say, the statement the club put out to announce they’d ‘separated’ (it int a divorce, what a weird word to use!) was a joke. After all he’s done, they don’t even thank him for his service. It was nice to see Daniel come to The Garrison for his leaving do,
though. I went darn for a couple of pints with him and the fans, and he’s gutted to be going himself. You’ll always have a place in our hearts, gaffer! As for where The Reds go next, it’s anyone’s guess. But the board have got to understand that we’re not here to be a nice little money maker for them. We’re a proud club and we want success. They have to start supporting the managers or we’ll be up and down between the Championship and League One every year. Let’s get behind the players and show them our support. It’s not their fault and if we get behind them, hopefully results will improve. You Reds!

Hubble bubble toil and trouble! Happy Halloween, All Saints Day and Bonfire Night. This time of year reminds us of being a small child, when Halloween meant carving out a turnip and placing a candle in it! No trick or treating, no dressing up, it was just a way to while away a damp and dreary Autumn afternoon. All Saints Day was celebrated at school with singing hymns, no mention of witches or broomsticks in a Church school! Mischievous Night was a big occasion years ago. Neighbours and friends would have been gathering wood and branches for weeks, only to wake up on Bonfire morning to find most of it ‘pinched’! Fireworks were quieter in those days, no huge displays, just plenty of
back garden sparklers and small crackles and pops. Rockets were less predictable, flying off in any direction they weren’t supposed to. Catherine Wheels were another source of excitement, would they stay nailed to the fence? Would they actually spin? Or would they just burst into flames and burn the fence? What are your favourite memories of childhood spooks and sparks? Were they simple and fun or spectacular displays of costumes and amazing firework extravaganzas? However you celebrate, stay safe and enjoy yourselves. Pumpkin pie, Bonfire toffee, parkin, hotdogs, pie and peas? Ooh the delicious tastes of our Autumn festivals. As the nights draw in, it’s always good to have

Scott Doonican’s band The Bar-Steward Sons of Val Doonican have gained a reputation of being a music festival highlight. By the time this show comes around, the self-proclaimed 'hardest working comedy-folk band in the UK' will have already performed their 1000th show. They play parodies of famous songs, with lyrics about their beloved home-town, a world of life's frustrations, pasty shops, over privileged pop stars, and everything else in-between. The band have collaborated with the likes of Eliza Carthy, Saxon’s Graham Oliver and The Levellers and were invited by Folk legends Fairport Convention, to perform last year at their annual Cropredy Convention festival in front of 20,000 people. Serious Sam Barrett spent his childhood in Barnsley and grew up on a diet of Barnsley Folk Club regulars, such as Dave Burland. Now based in Leeds, the skateboarding, banjo wielding musician’s songs rattle with the ghosts of Appalachian folk, southern blues, traditional English folk and Yorkshire DIY Punk. While reinterpreting traditional songs, Sam also writes confessional contemporary folk songs inspired by life in and around the skate-parks of Leeds. Tom Jackson is a young Barnsley based singer songwriter, whose roots lay in his former punk band Taxi For Bob. Family gives double thanks to Tiny Hearts A family have more than one reason to be thankful to Barnsley Hospital’s neonatal unit and its Tiny Hearts fundraising campaign. Twenty-six years ago, Michaela Hatfield gave birth to her daughter Jenna who arrived early and weighed not much over three pounds when she was born. Jenna was gravely ill and received lifesaving treatment in the unit. Then, when Jenna came to have her own baby son Matthew two years ago he was born ten weeks prematurely and also needed treatment in the unit. To say thank you, the family have donated a whopping £5,500 to Barnsley Hospital Charity’s Tiny Hearts campaign which is now close to its £1m target. The money was raised via the Tractor Run held in Penistone in April. The popular event was the
brainchild of Sam Raynes, Jenna’s husband, whose granddad runs a farm in Gunthwaite near Penistone. Michaela, from Cudworth, said it was only the second Tractor Run Sam had organised but the event was taking off in a big way. “The run gets bigger and bigger. Last year we donated the proceeds to the Embrace team in Sheffield who also treated Matthew when he was born. “This year we thought we would give to Tiny Hearts – Matthew was seriously ill and they were amazing looking after him. He had several things wrong. He was in neonatal for over six weeks.
“Now he is an absolutely gorgeous two-year-old. He is walking and talking and is just amazing.” Michaela, who is a laboratory assistant working in Barnsley Hospital’s Pathology department, said Matthew also has an older brother William, four. She added: “They are such a lovely little family.” Jane Mills, Barnsley Hospital Charity Development Manager, said: “We really did not expect such a fantastically generous donation. The funds will be used to continue to provide life-saving equipment for our neonatal unit, which will mean the world to many local families.”

Sunday League Football Round-up The 2019-20 season has seen a new look to the Barnsley & District Sunday League. Although the number of clubs has remained broadly the same, this season has seen a move to a reduction to 2 divisions with a larger number of clubs in each. It has also taken a different look with the shock resignation of Wombwell Main FC. The club was the longest members of the league, had dominated the Premier Division in recent years, and were last season’s treble winners.The League are though pleased to welcome back Birdwell Rovers FC (pictured) into the Premier Division after a lengthy absence from Sunday football. It already appears that the bid for the Premier Division title is going to be keenly contested by a number of clubs. Honeywell FC and Worsbrough Common FC are joint top with 3 wins in 3 games. Close on their heels are Cobcar S&SC FC and Athersley Rec FC in joint third place with 7 points. Most of
the Premier Division had a break from the league this weekend being on County Cup duties. Honeywell FC continued their winning run with an away victory after extra time and penalties at Mexborough League’s Dog and Daisy FC. This keeps the club with a shout in three cup competitions.The Well had keeper Steve Roberts (pictured) to thank for saving 4 penalties in the shoot out. The new look Division One has 12 clubs and after beating joint leaders Portcullis FC 5-3 this weekend Northside Lodge WMC FC (pictured) sit at the top of the league having taken a maximum 15 points from the first 5 fixtures. Special mention to Dale Juniors FC who finished astray at the bottom of last season’s old Division 2 and now sit in a very respectable joint third place after four fixtures. On Sunday Grey Horse FC got their first three points of the season with an excellent 4-2 victory over Cudwoth Star FC who are in joint third place.

Barnsley College awarded official Digital Schoolhouse status by UK computing initiative Barnsley College is pleased to announce an innovative partnership with Digital Schoolhouse (DSH) together with Nintendo UK, which will offer primary school pupils the chance to develop their computing skills. DSH is a not-for-profit programme delivered by the UK games industry trade body Ukie, which uses play-based learning, such as esports (electronic sports), to engage the next generation of pupils and teachers with the Computing curriculum. The College’s Sport department shares the same vision and has invested in a state-of-theart Esports Arena to help prepare young people for the future digital world. In addition, as a certified Digital
Schoolhouse, the College’s Esports students have the opportunity to take part in the pioneering Digital Schoolhouse Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Team Battle tournament on Nintendo Switch. Kalam Neale, Sport Curriculum Leader at Barnsley College, said: “We’re really proud to have been awarded DSH status. The timing is excellent with the opening of our arena and inception of the first-ever cohort of Esports students at Barnsley College. “DSH status will allow us to engage with primary schools in Barnsley to develop the digital and computing skills of the next generation, whilst raising awareness and aspirations of careers in computing and the
esports industry. “We are also extremely excited for our Esports students to experience the DSH tournament which is expected to reach 60 schools and colleges and over 6,000 pupils in the UK.” Shahneila Saeed, Director of Digital Schoolhouse, added: “We use play-based learning to ensure primary pupils are aptly equipped with the digital skills they need for their future.
