find out about reflexology and its many benfits for your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. So, what exactly is Reflexology?
Reflexology has been in existence for thousands of years according to scripts, texts and pictures from China, India and Egypt. Traditionally it is done on the feet, however the hands are just as effective. I use applied pressure on the hands or the feet. This varied pressure is applied using my thumbs, fingers and sometimes my knuckles, using a variety of taught and practiced techniques. The nerve endings of the body, are on the hands and the feet and stimulating these nerve endings by applying pressure can relieve symptoms of discomfort, pain, stress and emotional difficulties within the body. Reflexology enables the blockages of energy to be cleared and aids in the re-balancing of the body. The whole of the human body is mapped onto the hands and the feet and I work upon certain areas (reflexes) to help to harmonise the systems and functions of the body. It is important to note that Reflexology does not cure or diagnose disease. However, the relief from the sometimes nagging, every day pain that some of my clients have expereinced in e.g. their back, shoulder, neck has been significantly reduced and can therefore be better managed.

What is a Reflexology session like?
If you choose to have foot Reflexology you will be laid back on a Reflexology chair or in a comfortable position for you. However, Reflexology can also be on the tops of the feet, with a client sat down, with their feet on the floor. The latter position will be suitable for the older person or alternatively they could have a treatment on their hands. The left foot responds to all the organs, part of the systems on the left side of the body and the right foot, the right side of the body (this is the same principle for the hands). For a new client, a medical questionnaire will need to be completed to ensure that I am made aware of any existing conditions and any medications or if I need to seek GP consent. There are certain conditions that this applies to. A treatment for an older person, a person who has Cancer or Dementia will be shorter (up to a maximum of 30 minutes) and only a gentle pressure applied, because often the skin can be very delicate and sometimes quite sensitive. The usual length of a treatment will be 40-45 minutes. I will take note of any disturbances that I find to the reflexes, in each session. After the initial session, I will design a treatment plan which will be tailored to suit the individual, to gain the maximum effect from their treatments. The treat-
ment plan will target certain reflexes which will assist in the ailments (pathologies) of the client. From all of my clients past and present I have noted less disturbances (areas of imbalance) of the reflexes, per treatment and my clients have always felt less pain or discom-fort, or experienced less trouble from their original ailments.

I have heard of Reiki, but what is it? By Cheryl Clarke, Reiki practitioner and Reflexologist. Reiki (pronounced ‘ray-key’) is an ancient form of Japanese healing. profound sense of calm. A full Reiki treatment will take approximately 1 hour, where the whole of the body is focused upon. Consent is required prior to a treatment, from a client or, if deemed appropriate, the family of a client, as well as the completion of a short medical questionnaire. This system of healing was developed by Mikao Usui, in the early 20th Century. This is the Reiki that I am a practitioner of and it is important to note that during my treatments, I work alongside spirit guides. Personally, I feel that the treatments that I have received, enabled me to cope better with the loss of loved ones and to deal with periods of intense change. When a client of mine was pregnant and suffering with quite intense back pain, I suggested that Reiki might help. My client was relaxed throughout her treatment and she informed me of where the pain was, I could identify the location of the pain as my hands grew particularly warm. My client could feel this warmth, even though I was working 1-2cm above her back. The pain moved gradually from her back, down her right leg and the blockage of energy exited via her foot. My client felt a lot more comfortable after this full Reiki treatment and it enabled her to move around more freely and to get the sleep she needed! She still had twinges of back ache when her baby moved and positioned herself in a certain way, but the intense pain was cleared by the Reiki.

After a long, hard season, they secured promotion to The Championship after Sunderland and Portsmouth – their two nearest challengers, failed to win their games in hand. The players were brill all year – and Daniel Stendel is an absolute legend. He’s got the fans excited at Oakwell and they’ve played some
great stuff. Hopefully they continue their good form into next season where tougher tests await. But we can manage that, can’t we? We’re all Barnsley! What they need now is all of our support ahead of the new campaign. Get yourself to Oakwell if you fancy a Saturday out and get behind the lads. They need the Tarn to get behind them. You Reds!
Library opening getting closer
Tour de Yorkshire a huge success! Did you manage to catch the Tour de Yorkshire in Barnsley at the start of the month? It banged it down with rain (typical!) but it didn’t dampen the spirits of race goers, who turned out in their thousands to support the riders. The town centre was packed out and bustling with activity

– while the route, including Mapplewell and Royston, was a sea of blue and yellow, the TDY colours. The Tarn did itself proud yet again (as it always does) and hopefully we’ll get to welcome the race back in the near future!
How fantastic does the new Library @ the Lightbox look? The building is now complete – with the fit out the only thing left to do before it officially opens on Saturday 13 July. It will be brilliant for the Tarn centre when it opens. It’s the first completely new building as part of The Glass Works, and it really looks the part.
It will make the town centre busier when it opens and that’s a great sign of things to come. Lounges restaurant – named Falco Lounge in honour of ar Kes – will open at the end of this month. It’s got a brilliant menu including full vegan and gluten free options. It’s exciting times in the Tarn centre!
Big weekend on its way To celebrate the opening of the new library, Barnsley will celebrate with its first ever big weekend! It will include the opening of the library, the Mayor’s Parade, Pride Barnsley and Destination Barnsley – plus loads of family entertainment and activities!

Royston Fitness Instructor Runs Marathon For RETT UK Amy Kitson, 38, originally from St Albans, Hertfordshire, completed the marathon this month to raise money for RETT UK. RETT UK support families that live with RETT syndrome – a severe and lifelong neurological disorder, which results in mental and physical disability. Amy’s youngest daughter, Emily, was born with RETT syndrome. Emily is nonverbal and requires 24-hour care for every aspect of her life. “She has the smile of an angel and we strive to make her life as full and enriched as possible. There may be some very tough times ahead - she could lose the ability to walk and develop seizures amongst other complications associated with the disease.” Amy travelled to London to complete the marathon on 28th April. She said: “We want to support other families like us by supporting RETT UK. Raising awareness and donations would help so much! “We’re very grateful to them for their guidance when-
ever we need it and want to contribute to the amazing work they do.” Amy is a Fitness Instructor at Royston Leisure Centre, which is operated by Barnsley Premier Leisure. stendel's stellar season
Barnsley Head coach Daniel Stendel’s first season in English football couldn’t have gone much better. In a new country and unable to speak English, the German boss has worked wonders to not only create an attacking football team that has won promotion, but he’s also mastered the Barnsley accent! “For me, English is difficult but the Barnsley language is very fast where three words is one word!” Joked the Reds boss. The Reds bounced back to the Championship at the first time of asking. Speaking to Together and Local at the civic reception, the former Hannover 96
striker was grateful for the support from the Barnsley public. “I think it’s a great moment for us,” he said. “It’s a sign of a great relationship of the club, the town and the people in the town. We deserved to celebrate this moment together.” Stendel already has his sights set on making a big impression on the Championship and work began straight away to prepare for England’s second tier of football. “We have worked in the last few days for the next season,” he continued. “Immediately after we were promoted, we had no time to wait. Especially with some players that we want to keep in our club. We need to talk with players and their agents. I hope we can keep most of the players from this season. “I think they’ve played very well and hope they want to play with us in the Championship next season. Some players we have options and sometimes the player can decide. I hope that we can convince players to stay here and it will go our way. “I think the game in the Championship is different to League One but it also has more quality. It’s a tough league and when you are just promoted it’s not so easy. We will see if we can stay in this league

but we will work hard in the next season and want to achieve the goal to stay in there.” It is expected that the club could tap into the German market for recruitment, but the Reds have been represented by players from all over the globe this season, including Australia, France, Spain, Germany and Britain. But Stendel is only concerned that his recruits will flourish in the Championship. “It’s possible to recruit from Germany, but we don’t need to only sign players from there,” he said. “We have played very well and I’m really surprised about the attitude from my players. We have players from the UK, Scotland and Wales. I have enjoyed working with every player and it’s possible that we sign players from Germany but it can also be from other countries and England. It’s only important if they are good players."

Midfielder mcgeehan makes an impact
Midfielder Cameron McGeehan was arguably the forgotten man having spent part of last season out on loan. There’s certainly been nothing forgetful about the impact he’s had this term, however.

The 24-year-old has flourished in Barnsley’s energetic midfield; netting six goals in 44 appearances that got stronger as the season wore on. “It’s only just starting to sink in, really,” said McGeehan about the feeling of promotion. “We’ve got a holiday all booked together which is nice. It’s been a long, hard season so we’ll all rest up and enjoy this. Days like this are great, it’s just such a great feeling.” Having joined the Reds last summer
from Luton, his debut Oakwell campaign was a tough one as he fought back to fitness following a broken leg sustained at his previous club. “Barnsley fans probably hadn’t seen me play so much,” he continued. “Last year I played a little bit but I obviously wasn’t fully fit. I got myself going and showed them what I’m capable of. I’ve still got a lot more to come and a lot more to give, hopefully that will come next season in the Championship.

“I think you need a few games (after injury) to find your fitness and get into that rhythm. I went out on loan last year to get playing and see myself right. I realised what I needed to do to come back fit and flying this season which I did. I had a little injury at the start of the season but managed to get into the team and keep my place since so that was great.” Such was McGeehan’s contribution to Barnsley’s promotion campaign, he was awarded a place in the division’s ‘team of the season’ alongside team-mates Adam Davies, Ethan Pinnock and Alex Mowatt. “Obviously deep within me I have belief in myself,” he said. “In the process I had faith that things would work out for me in the end if I kept doing things right. Quite honestly, I wasn’t sure whether it was going to be at Barnsley because I was sitting on the bench and had some tough days. I can remember Plymouth at home and Peterborough away I was an unused sub, it gave me pain and suffering but I’ve got myself back in and it gave me an extra edge to my game. I won’t forget the times I’ve had sat on the bench and watch others play when I wanted to. “It’s been a long road to get to this point. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going now. From day one the gaffer said I was part of his plans. He’s been
great with me and drove me on. He’s shown faith in the lads and the young players. "There are times when you doubt yourself but the manager has believed in me and that’s been good.” It was a season of double-enjoyment for McGeehan, whose old club Luton fin-

ished just above the Reds to win the title. “It’s amazing for them,” he said. “They’ve probably surprised themselves with how well they’ve done. They’ve taken momentum with them and gone straight up. We want to do the same next season and kick on from there.”

Looking back... andy liddell
Former Barnsley striker Andy Liddell was surprised to learn a 22-year-old record he set had recently been matched by current forward Jacob Brown. In actual fact, Liddell didn’t even know he held this record at all! The former Scotland youth international represented the Reds between 1992 and 1998 and, until recently, he was the last product of the club’s youth system to hit eight goals in a single season. “I’m surprised it’s lasted that long, to be honest,” laughed the former striker. “It has surprised me because I didn’t know it was any sort of record. It sounds like the Academy are producing good players and he’s (Jacob) playing in the team which has had a good season.” Nowadays ‘Lidds’ lives in Portugal with his family, but was recently appointed Fitness Coach to Mick McCarthy’s Ireland. It was the 1996-97 campaign where Liddell struck his eight goals; a promotion season just like the one Barnsley have enjoyed recently. However, 22 years ago, the Tykes reached the Premier League under Danny Wilson. “At the start of the season we had a lot of new players,” remembers Liddell. “We played West Brom and won 2-1 but we absolutely battered them - it could have been 8-1. We were kind of thinking ‘We’re a half-decent team here’. Nobody in their right mind thought we’d get promoted after the first game. But as the season went on, we signed John Hendrie - who was a big part of it - and the team just rolled on and rolled on. “When you get to halfway through the season near the top of the league and you’ve played everybody once, people were like ‘They’re not bad, these’. Danny

and Eric (Winstanley) kept it really low key and nobody expected us to do what we did and nobody really demanded it.” The Reds defied the odds and Liddell - who also played for Wigan, Sheffield United and Oldham - credits his former coach Eric Winstanley as the main reason he enjoyed a successful career. “I did say when we did a Q&A for the Daydream Believers film and Eric was there, he is the reason why I was a professional footballer,” continued Liddell. “He taught all those guys like myself, Adi Moses, Chris Morgan, Scott Jones, Dave Watson and Nicky Eaden and he showed us what it took to be a professional footballer. It was mainly about working hard but he showed us that you have to be disciplined and be fit and organised as a team and as a person. “I was scared of him. I was scared because I didn’t want to upset him or disappoint him. I wanted to win, obviously for myself, but also for him. When he came round and if you hadn’t done your job to his satisfaction, he would get you training. If you hadn’t cleaned the toilets, you get your trainers on and do a 12-minute run.” In total, he made 228 appearances for the club, netting 38 goals - including against his boyhood team, Leeds United. “It’s brilliant to know you’re part of the club’s history,” he added. “Most guys will tell you the same. Every time I’ve been back as a player or a coach I’ve got a fantastic reception from the fans and people that work there. That team did something that had never been done before and hasn’t been done since. I hope they will do it again but it’ll be hard. Having worked in the Championship for seven years,
it’s brutal. “It’s something I look back on with real fondness. People tweet me and things like that and it’s really fantastic. Your career goes quickly, I blinked and it went. You dream of stuff like that and it actually happened. “Scoring in the Premier League was amazing. Purely from a selfish point of view, as a kid I grew up watching Match of the Day with my dad every Saturday night. To then see myself score a goal on Match of the Day in the Premier League is something that you can’t buy. I couldn’t even begin to explain that. Also, it was against my team, Leeds United. All my pals were behind the goal and to pick one Premier League goal, I scored it against them.”

The Barnsley Canister Company began life in 1915 as a WW1 munitions factory, where women toiled at the war effort. After the war ended the Canister Company was created, their main purpose was making fancy tins for the world market. It was a very significant company not only nationally but globally, exporting their highly sought after tins around the world. The quality of their embossing and artwork was the best you could get, making beautiful decorative tins for the Co-op, Twinings and Hershey’s to name a few. The factory employed local women who could do shifts around bringing up a family and earn extra money in very tight financial domestic situations. The exhibition celebrates 100 years of the ‘Greatest Tin Factory in the World’ and

looks at one of Barnsley’s most intriguing companies. Experience Barnsley uncovers the hidden story of how the company impacted on the lives of working women in Barnsley - liberating them and giving them a new found freedom.

Oven supremo... the supreme clean team Hello everybody, we’d like to introduce ourselves. We are Andrew and Jackie, we’re husband and wife who own “Oven Supremo”. We live in the lovely little village of Brierley, here in the Barnsley area. We’ve been in business now since February 2016, so a little over 3 years. It was an exciting but anxious time when we first became self-employed, but we are finding that things are taking off nicely. We have regular customers now, but also enjoy meeting new customers. Let us give you some background knowledge of how, and why we decided to go into oven cleaning. Andrew was working for Royal Mail and had been for over 20 years. After leaving for personal reasons he really
felt that he wanted to start working for himself. Following a friend's comment about how she had recently had her oven professionally cleaned, Andrew carried out some research into courses for oven cleaning. He found a company in Bournemouth and booked on to the course. Once fully qualified he started trading. At this point I was working for a domiciliary care company, which I enjoyed immensely. Following some bad health news though in October 2016, I
personally felt that I could no longer work as a carer anymore. I joined the business as a partner. As the saying goes, after that the rest is history. Andrew does the vast majority of the cleaning, but I do help him on occasion. This is especially so if we get a range or an Aga oven clean come in. I also help with the marketing side of things. So
that means attending networking events and general administration duties. Andrew is also fully qualified to do electrical oven repairs as well, so this includes replacing oven elements and fan motors etc. So... if your oven needs some TLC, call the Supremo team!
