NEWS FROM MRS KNIGHT, HEAD OF PRE-PREP
Our Nursery children produced an excellent Class Assembly this morning, based on their recent core text, The Little Red Hen. I say this regularly, but it is so encouraging to see the confidence of these children growing all the time and them developing their all-round skills. Miss Pemberton initiated a vibrant week of learning in Pre-Prep by explaining the significance of Shrove Tuesday. The Nursery and Reception classes enjoyed their pancake-making sessions where they eagerly participated in mixing batter and flipping pancakes. All learned about the tradition of using up rich foods before Lent, fostering a sense of cultural awareness and culinary skills. This was immediately followed by marking Valentine's Day. Standing at the gate on yet another gloomy February morning my heart was uplifted with children coming in with talk of delicious pancakes from the previous day and Valentine treats. All day the school buzzed with creativity as the children crafted handmade cards and artwork for their friends and loved ones. Valentine’s Day, although maybe a little over commercialised now, gives us the opportunities in school to teach lessons on kindness and empathy, emphasising the importance of expressing love and appreciation for others. A beautiful note was written by a child in Year 2 to a friend, it read, “You give me courage and great cuddles. Happy Valentine’s day. You are lots of fun and you keep me going!” The recipient was truly touched. Through these celebrations the children not only learned about cultural traditions but also cultivated values of generosity, compassion, and friendship, making it a truly enriching learning experience. Today sees the halfway mark of the school year. We can reflect on how much has been achieved and the progress that has been made by all the children but it is also a good time to take stock, to be thankful and to enjoy a short rest. Nursery has enjoyed a fun filled week full of pancakes and hearts; what more could anyone want? The children worked hard to carefully measure out their ingredients for the pancake batter and then reaped the benefits of their hard work when they enjoyed cooking and of course, eating their creations. We talked about the meaning behind pancake day and big promises were made about what they would choose to give up for Lent! The highlight of our week however, was most definitely our Class Assembly. The children have worked so hard to learn all of the stories, poems and songs and I am exceptionally proud of them all. Here’s to a well deserved rest! Ali Mackie
Reception has had a wonderful week of exploration. In Numeracy we investigated height by arranging ourselves into height order. To understand the language ‘shorter’ and ‘longer’ we tried to make playdough snakes and compare their length. We used our junk modelling skills and understanding of basic algorithms to create boats with a partner. These were judged furiously by the rest of the class, with a thumbs up if they predicted it would float, and a thumbs down if they thought it would sink. Year 1P We have done lots of practical work in Maths this week, beginning with using multilink cubes to show subtraction. We then practised our doubling by playing a game with a partner. In Geography, the children discovered some interesting facts about chameleons, as well as labelling a picture including the casque and scaly skin. We then used a range of media to create a colour changing chameleon! Lucy Pemberton
Year 1B In English and Geography, we have been finding out about animals from around the world. In Geography, the children have sorted animals and stuck them in the countries and climate zones they live in. In English, they have written about different animals, where they live and what they can do. In History, they have worked in pairs to find out more information about either Matthew Henson, Felicity Aston or Christopher Columbus and then created their own factfile. Love has been in the air this week as the children have created their own valentines card for someone they love. They have made cards for their friends, family and even their pets.

Year 2 has started the topic of measurement in Maths with lots of lively discussion about the best units to measure various different animals with. In English, exciting endings were written to our dread under the bed stories and we have tried some report writing. This has led to lots of fact finding about different kinds of bears, please ask us some questions, we are experts. In Science the importance of a healthy diet and exercise. In OWL we nailed hearts for weaving and toasted marshmallows. King Henry VIII was the focus of our History lessons and in Geography we were weather forecasters. Kirsten Knight
