NEWS FROM MRS KNIGHT, HEAD OF PRE-PREP
In my class on Monday, we got around to discussing what an interview was. I spoke a little about interviews and questions that people may get asked. I challenged the children to think of three words that they could use to describe their own characters and also to think of three words that other children might use to describe them. It was very special to hear children saying some amazing, and genuine things about their classmates, with words such as: ‘kind’, ‘loyal’, ‘caring’, ‘playful’, ‘funny’ and ‘honest’ featuring regularly. Establishing and holding to individual values is a vital, formative part of a child’s education and helps set foundations that we hope will be embedded for life. This week we are marking the NSPCC number day. The money we raise could help the NSPCC run its Speak out Stay safe programme, which we used in school at the start of this term to help children understand what abuse is and what to do if they're scared or worried. There are sadly far too many cases of neglect and abuse highlighted in the press, and we must never think it won’t happen close to home. This is an example of the good work the NSPCC are doing. Caroline’s seven-year-old son was sexually abused by a 13-year-old friend of the family. Luke’s behaviour had deteriorated over a period of months. After seeing one of the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe assemblies, Luke disclosed the abuse to his mum. She believes that he would never have spoken out without the service. They reported what had happened to the police and Luke is now doing well. Childline is a free service for children and young people - there whenever they need support or advice. Childline delivered approximately 16,300 counselling sessions per month last year, with a cost of £4 per call. Thank you for supporting this very worthwhile charity. Nursery this week has continued on their journey exploring the world of Traditional Tales. This week was the turn of The Enormous Turnip’ and we have been reading the story and retelling it using our story map. In Maths we have been finding out all about the number 4 and the children have also really enjoyed experimenting with colour mixing. We had lots of fun painting in puddles and watching the colours change, but best of all was jumping in them at the end! Ali Mackie
Reception has been busy this week with the story ‘Lost & Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. We thought about the little lonely penguin and how we could cheer him up with a party. We drew some wonderful polar animals. We also explored the concept of floating and sinking, putting our scientist hats on to predict which items would float in our water tray. We knew big boats were made of metal, so had lots of questions when a metal spoon sunk quickly to the bottom. We also couldn’t believe that a banana, apple and orange all floated! Year 1P
In English, we continue our work on the story ‘Lost and Found’ by Oliver Jeffers. The children have written labels for animals that were found in our classroom, using synonyms for sad and lonely. We also wrote some instructions for ‘How to Help a Lost Penguin’, using imperative verbs at the start of the sentence. I was very impressed with the children’s writing! In Science, we had lots of fun trying to find the best material to use as an umbrella for a cuddly toy. Lucy Pemberton Year 1B This week we have travelled south to the Antarctic. The children have found out about the explorer Felicity Aston. They have compared the equipment she had on her journey across the Antarctic with the equipment of Matthew Henson. They have enjoyed looking at photos from the Antarctic and creating drawings inspired by them. In Maths, they have enjoyed working in pairs and investigating how many different ways they can split an amount into three groups.

RECOGNISE COLOU
Year 2 has enjoyed writing letters to William advising him what to do about the bear in the lair under the stairs. They had certain criteria, including using -ould words and contractions, which they were all successful with, well done! They have impressively stepped up to the task of re -organising the class assembly with so many of our friends away poorly, and we have enjoyed recapping on all our activities and learning this term.
