Today, the discourse of informality has shifted away from formal-informal dichotomies to instead view the phenomenon as both intertwined and synergistic. This session surveys global approaches to urban informality and placemaking through participatory actions that advance social justice in various ways.
In urban underserved spaces where people are aging in place, community-centered approaches to design and place-making are turning to efforts at “placekeeping”: quality spaces for those trying to maintain their urban communities. At the same time, intergenerational living spaces are increasingly necessary to create safe and economical aging communities. The primary goal of this project is to retrofit homes, in the existing urban community through assessment, re-conceptualization, and home modifications, that are safe and appropriately designed to support the care and needs of older adults.
