WHERE THE RIVERS MEET

Mount Royal University is situated on an ancient and storied land that is steeped in ceremony and history that, until recently, was occupied exclusively by people indigenous to this place. With gratitude and reciprocity, Mount Royal acknowledges the relationships to the land and all beings, and the songs, stories and teachings of the Siksika Nation, the Piikani Nation, the Kainai Nation, the Îethka Stoney Nakoda Nation (consisting of the Chiniki, Bearspaw and Goodstoney Nations), the people of the Tsuut’ina Nation and the Métis.
SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS STUDENT SUCCESS
Mount Royal University is committed to doing its part to address the legacy of broken promises and rebuild the relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples in Calgary and across the country.
Our goal is to indigenize Mount Royal University, to respect and embrace Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing, to integrate Indigenous teachings and practices, to support Indigenous learners, and to honour Indigenous experiences and identities.

NAMING OF INISKIM
Iniskim means Buffalo Calling Stone, which holds special meaning to the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot).
Long ago, when food was scarce for the people of the plains, the inii (buffalo) showed compassion and sent a message through Weasel Woman. As she collected water from the river, a stone called to her from the bushes and told her to perform a ceremony to call the buffalo towards the pisskan (buffalo jump). She took the Iniskim back to camp and told the spiritual leaders. The people gathered and performed the ceremony, and soon the buffalo returned. The buffalo provided enough food, better shelter and tools for the people to thrive.
Today, we refer to education as the new inii, and we are calling out to students to attend university for the opportunity to provide better lives for their communities, families and themselves.

FROM THE TUNDRA TO THE COCKPIT
Growing up in Rankin Inlet, Sid Nichol was no stranger to planes. Air travel was simply part of life in the North. Now, thanks to a partnership between Mount Royal University and Canadian North, he’s turning that lifelong connection into a career. In MRU’s Aviation program, Sid is working toward his commercial pilot’s licence — and inspiring a new generation of northern youth to take flight.
Everyone is willing to help at MRU — it’s a great program. You get to know your instructors on a personal level and they’re always just a text away.
