Greetings From the Principal
Dear friends of Mount de Sales Academy,
Life requires a great deal of faith. During the high school years especially, students engage deeply with the culture around them, ask meaningful questions about life’s purpose, and seek to live fully amid the daily rhythms of school, family, friendships, work, and activities. At Mount de Sales, these questions are not only welcomed — they are nurtured, explored, and allowed to flourish in the lives of our students.
Recently, Mount de Sales Academy hosted an event for eighth graders to model the March for Life. There were presentations, activities, discussions, and games throughout the day. Students attended Mass, prayed the rosary in small groups around campus, and prayed throughout the day. It was a wonderful day for the eighth graders! And it was a tremendous day for Mount de Sales Academy. I watched a senior stand before 200+ students and deliver a testimonial about the change it made in their family when their younger sister was born this past December. I witnessed our students give directions and lead groups, with all the eighth graders listening and following. Our students were flourishing right before my eyes: growing in confidence, poise, and conviction all at the same time.
We also recently hosted the Purple Sheep Project, a grassroots toy collection begun years ago by one of our students. Today, it has become a schoolwide effort supporting children who have experienced trauma. Service at Mount de Sales is not simply encouraged; it is lived. Watching our students take initiative and motivate the entire community to participate is deeply inspiring.
Each week, I hear from current families and alumnae parents about the blessings of a Mount de Sales education. It takes sacrifice and trust to choose this path, yet the fruits are clear. Seeds of faith planted here continue to grow long after graduation. Having served here for eight years, I now encounter our alumnae as young adults in parishes and communities. Priests often remark on their leadership and commitment to the faith — a testimony that fills me with gratitude.
Life at Mount de Sales may appear ordinary: students attend class, build friendships, compete in athletics, and join activities. Yet within these everyday moments, something extraordinary is unfolding. Our students grow in faith.
Our Lord has a plan for each of us — a plan for our happiness now and forever in heaven. Though we do not follow it perfectly, striving toward it brings joy and purpose. I am profoundly proud of our students, their achievements, and their goodness. The charism of Mount de Sales continues to guide them as they flourish in faith.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sister Mary Raymond, O.P. Principal
Service Coordinator Jessica Hechter and students joined the Purple Sheep Project, founded by Gabriela Huff ’27, to bring stuffed animals and books to children in need.

Faith& Culture
An interview with Sister Anna Laura, O.P.
What is the purpose of this elective course called Faith and Culture Seminar?
This one-semester class is designed to explore the relationship between literature, theology, and philosophy, so as to deepen students’ understanding of the relationship between faith and culture.
What is the relationship between faith and culture?
To explain the connection between faith and culture, I like to use a simple comparison of planting seeds. Just as seeds are planted and hidden in the soil, so too are our ideas and beliefs planted and hidden in our minds and hearts. And just as seeds bring forth particular plants, so too do our ideas and beliefs bring forth a particular way of living, a culture. Through culture, we are called to give material expression to spiritual realities like beauty, goodness, truth, and love. These are intangible but real things that originate in God, or you could say, they are attributes of God. Culture can and should echo these divine attributes and by doing so, draw us closer and closer to the Source of all beauty, goodness, and truth ~ to our God who is the Eternal Exchange of Love (Catechism of the Catholic Church #221).
Can you give an example of how culture makes visible the beauty of the truth?
Chartres cathedral in France is a great example of this. Like a symphony in stone and glass, the magnificent stained-glass windows and intricate, elegant arches are designed to echo the brilliant light and beauty of heaven. The Chartres * architects made their faith visible, giving us a glimpse of the splendor of our heavenly home that awaits us and a visible reminder of what is happening during every Mass.
What do students read in this class?
In this course we focus primarily on literature, an aspect of culture in which philosophy and theology are particularly made manifest. We consider how literature helps us to know, love, and serve God, and the ways writers and saints have used stories, poetry, and drama to share the Catholic faith. Students participate in seminars discussing the elements of faith in the works studied and how these truths have shaped culture. Class readings include selections from Karol Wojtyla, J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, G.K. Chesterton, Willa Cather, Edith Stein, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Julian of Norwich, and other poets and authors.
Is there anything else you would like to share?
I absolutely love teaching this class because “the loving study of language and literature,” as the great Dominican Fr. Gerald Vann says, “helps us to see in the vivid and vital beauty of words a reflection of the infinite beauty of that same eternal Word.”
Fun Fact: The stained glass windows in the Chapel of St. Francis de Sales were fired in Chartres, France. *

President of the Board of Trustees
With a strong foundation and a thoughtful strategic plan guiding the way, Mount de Sales Academy is in an exciting era as we look toward our 175th anniversary in 2027-2028. We sat down with our new Board of Trustees President—an alumna and dedicated trustee for 12 years—to learn more about her vision and leadership priorities.
As a Mount de Sales alumna and the new President of the Board of Trustees, how does your personal connection to the school shape your vision for this role?
As a Mount de Sales alumna, my relationship with the school is rooted in deep gratitude for the values, education, and sense of community that helped shape who I am today. This personal connection gives me profound respect for the school’s mission and a strong sense of responsibility to steward it into the future. As President of the Board of Trustees, my vision is informed by an appreciation for Mount de Sales’ traditions and focus on safeguarding the school’s longterm vitality, including academic excellence, financial sustainability, and a supportive community. Being an alumna allows me to view decisions through both a governance lens and the perspective students and families experience, strengthening my commitment to preserving what makes Mount de Sales special while supporting continued strategic growth.
What excites you most about Mount de Sales Academy’s current strategic plan, and how will it enhance the student experience and/or impact the long-term stability or growth of the school?
What excites me most about the strategic plan through 2028 is its focus on student-centered excellence and long-term sustainability. Through the seven areas of focus, the plan balances academic excellence with faith, community engagement, and responsible stewardship of resources. By investing in technology, infrastructure, and programs that enrich the student experience while strengthening the school’s financial foundation, Mount de Sales is positioning itself to thrive for generations to come. This forward-looking approach ensures that students and families benefit from a dynamic, mission-driven education in an environment prepared to adapt and grow.
What do you hope students, families, and alumnae will feel or gain through your leadership?
I hope students, families, and alumnae feel confidence in the school’s leadership and direction. It is the Board’s objective to ensure Mount de Sales remains grounded in its values while evolving to meet the needs of today’s students and families. I want our community to feel heard, supported, and connected, and to trust that decisions are made with diligent consideration and purpose. Ultimately, I hope my leadership strengthens pride in Mount de Sales and reinforces a sense of belonging to a community that supports lifelong learning, growth, and connection. This enduring connection maintains the support and engagement of students and families long after graduation.
Beyond your leadership at Mount de Sales, can you share a glimpse into your personal and professional life, and what brings you joy outside of MDSA?
Outside of my role at Mount de Sales, I am focused on continuing to grow in my profession in the accounting and finance field. My professional experiences have shaped my perspective on leadership, collaboration, and strategic decisionmaking. Personally, I treasure time with my husband and four kids, especially engaging in recreational activities and traveling. I also enjoy time with friends and opportunities to reflect and recharge. Whether giving back to the community, pursuing personal interests, or spending time with loved ones, these experiences ground me and reinforce the importance of connection, gratitude, and purpose—the values that align closely with the spirit of Mount de Sales.
The Dominican Difference
Forty years ago, the Dominican Renaissance, as termed by Trustee Emeritus and historian Reverend Michael J.P. Roach, began at Mount de Sales Academy (MDSA). With the arrival of three Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia from Nashville, TN, including Sister Philip Joseph, O.P., who went on to serve at MDSA for more than two decades, a tangible transformation took place. The most important gifts they brought to their new school were not packed in moving boxes but carried within each Sister—formed over four decades in a spirit of joy, simplicity, and constant prayer.
This fall, the MDSA community celebrated 40 years of the Dominican Difference with a month-long celebration leading up to St. Cecilia’s Feast Day on November 22, 2025.
Activities included:
Distribution of commemorative prayer cards recognizing the 40th anniversary and featuring the Memorare
Handwritten expressions of gratitude to current and former Dominican Sisters
A sweet treat of black-and-white cookies, reminiscent of the Dominican habit
An all-school assembly during which the Center for Performing Arts and Student Life was renamed the St. Cecilia Center in honor of the Dominican Sisters of St. Cecilia
Mother Anna Grace and all the Sisters at the Motherhouse who continue to support our
thriving
While we focus on the Dominican Sisters this school year, we never forget and always appreciate the Visitation Nuns who founded MDSA in 1852. As Sister Philip Joseph said, “After we had been there for a while, there was a spirit at Mount de Sales that we didn’t put there; it was the Visitations. The only thing we could do was come in and enhance it.” Enhance it, they did!

Fiddler on the Roof
The Mount de Sales Performing Arts Department wowed sold-out audiences with the fall musical, Fiddler on the Roof. This poignant show was beautifully designed and directed by MDSA drama teacher Mrs. Marian Newell P’26. Students explored the richness of the Jewish faith as they researched their characters, portraying this timeless story of family, tradition, and community.
Tevye, the main character and dairy farmer with five daughters, was played by Leo Kirby MSJ ’27. His amazing vocals, heartfelt interactions with his family, and hilarious side conversations with God made for an Oscar-worthy performance. June Newell ’26, a wonderful character actress, was his perfect match, playing Tevye’s wife Golde. Fabulous performances by Nat Johnson ’26 as Grandma Tzeitel and Megan McCaffrey ’26 as Fruma-Sarah helped Tevye tell his tale. Other strong performances included the three oldest daughters Tzeitel (Emma Brady ’26), Hodel (Reagan Woody ’26), and Chava (Kara Strong ’26), each finding love and challenging the idea of tradition. Maria Marston ’26 was hysterical as the matchmaker, Yente, and the lovely voices of Lila Gagnier ’27 and Teresa Kurek ’28 rounded out the family. The ensemble of
villagers transported the audience to 20th century Russia, where Jewish families faced exile from their little town of Anatevka.
As always, the incredible student stage crew provided invaluable support in executing Mrs. Newell’s vision. Stage managers Roz Herlihy ’26 and Laura Wallace ’28 led a team of over 35 crew members to create the set, props, and costumes as well as run the sound and lights for the show. Director of Music Mrs. Natalie Utz ’15, conducted the talented pit band, made up of MDSA and MSJ students along with a few pros. Eva Grace Sullivan ’28 pulled double duty, playing violin with the band and then jumping on stage to become the Fiddler, playing the iconic theme perched on the roof of the farmhouse.
The production staff is always so pleased to showcase the talent and hard work of our performing arts students. We are grateful to the community, our friends and benefactors who share such positive feedback and support the Fine Arts Department!

New Clubs flourish at Mount de Sales
P.R. Club
Hospitality Club
The Public Relations (P.R.) Club was started to create opportunities for students to learn media marketing at our school. This club gives members the chance to explore various production areas, including planning, filming, and editing.
Our main goal is to bring a new perspective to the Mount de Sales Instagram, one that current and incoming students can relate to and find entertaining.
We realized that students interested in communications haven't had the opportunity to pursue something like this before, so I’m happy to have founded this new club.
Carly Levender ‘26 Founder, President of the
P.R. Club
The Hospitality Club allows students to learn the art of hosting, presentation, and, most importantly, making others feel welcome.
The club offers unique opportunities to use creative expression along with real-world business and hosting skills that serve as valuable knowledge for students’ lives and possible careers following Mount de Sales.
Our goal is to teach students what hospitality means—being there for others when least expected and making them feel valued—through activities such as etiquette lessons, floral arranging, mocktail mixology, calligraphy workshops, faculty afternoon tea, guest speakers, and hands-on projects.

IAAM Athletic Director of the Year: Eric Dummann
The 2025 IAAM Athletic Director of the Year has been awarded to our very own, Eric Dummann. Dummann has been a vital part of the Mount de Sales community since 2017. In his eighth year at Mount de Sales, he oversaw a successful season that included four conference championships. Basketball and lacrosse both earned B Conference titles; cross country captured an A Conference championship, and tennis shared a B Conference title with Notre Dame Prep, resulting in four new banners for the Sailors.
These achievements are a direct result of Dummann allowing coaches to guide their programs while offering support as needed. Dummann is proud of the impact he’s made within the IAAM, “Being District X Athletic Director of the Year is a great honor and means a lot to me because it is chosen by my peers. I strive to be of value to my colleagues and coaches in the Mount de Sales community.”
He has shared that he is most proud of how MDSA student athletes grow and contribute to society with “mind, body and soul” after graduation, emphasizing the importance of academics and character alongside competition.
Principal Sr. Mary Raymond adds, “He values each of our students and their contributions, which come in many forms, on and off the field. Mr. Dummann always emphasizes ‘student’ before ‘athlete’ placing academics as the priority. He is a wonderful role model for our students, a valued MDSA employee, and a great leader within IAAM.” The MDSA family is blessed to have Eric Dummann as part of its staff.

2025 CHAMPIONS
Tennis
Tennis had an amazing fall season, finishing first in the regular season with a 9–1 record and ending the year with just one loss overall. Seniors Maggie West and Reese Wooden went undefeated at No. 1 doubles and finished first in the championship. Allison Martin and Bella Calis were also undefeated as a team and earned first place at No. 2 doubles. Freshman Averlin Antalics was named IAAM Player of the Week, highlighting the team’s strong individual performances. The team tied for first place in the IAAM Championship Tournament. This success was led by an outstanding group of seniors—Bella, Caroline, Maggie, Reese, Delyla, Lana, and Mariana—whose leadership and commitment were major reasons for the team’s great season.
Coach Wendy Heger
Cross Country
The 2025 cross country season was defined by steady growth, determination, and a belief in what the Sailors could accomplish together. After a summer of disciplined training, the team made a powerful statement at the Maryland XC Invitational. Fiona Smith ran a lifetime best of 18:27, moving to second all-time in program history, while Eva and Mary Bacinski both broke the 20-minute barrier. Siena Bammel delivered a strong fourth-place team finish, and freshman Anna Ring continued her steady improvement with a breakout performance that solidified the Sailors’ scoring five. Those performances provided momentum heading into championship season. At the IAAM A-Conference Championship on October 21, Fiona once again led the way, with Mary Bacinski, Eva Bacinski, Siena Bammel, and Anna Ring completing a composed and unified scoring effort. Running with quiet confidence, the Sailors set the pace early and held their position throughout the race. When the final scores were tallied, Mount de Sales claimed the IAAM A-Conference Championship with a dramatic two-point victory over Notre Dame Prep, 38–40. Four Sailors finished in the top 10 and all five scoring runners placed in the top 20 — a testament to the team’s depth and unity. The championship marked only the second IAAM title in program history and highlighted a season built on hard work, teamwork, and quiet confidence — a foundation that promises continued success for Sailor cross country.

Strategic Plan Success
Increasing our scholarship endowment and expanding our financial aid programs to offer more benefits to prospective and existing families
is the top Finance and Funding priority of the Mount de Sales Academy Strategic Plan 2022-2028. The Advancement Department’s Development Team, together with our donors, is making great strides toward meeting this goal.
Green Classes,
your financial support is going to work this year with the first allocation of the Green Class scholarships. Two members of the Class of 2029 receive tuition assistance made possible by the Green Class Scholarship! Current students sacrificially support their class scholarships through Your Participation Matters (YPM), our student-giving campaign. YPM gifts are then matched through the generosity of benefactors, Bill and Lynn Roohan. We appreciate the Roohan Family for magnifying our students’ gifts and serving as role models of Building a Culture of Philanthropy, a goal of the prior Strategic Plan.
The Flaherty Family Foundation
and Mount de Sales Academy (MDSA) entered into a partnership this school year with the selection of several freshmen and sophomores as Flaherty Scholars. We look forward to welcoming students from the Classes of 2030 and 2031, continuing to build the Flaherty Scholars program in each grade level and expanding the impact of this one-of-a-kind, student-successcentered scholarship.
Living Legacy
An almost 50-year relationship with MDSA has evolved into Ernestine B. Daum and Joe Reynolds III
Former MDSA basketball coach (1978–2003) and Athletic Hall of Fame member Fran Daum is the daughter of Ernestine and the sister-in-law of Joe. Ms. Daum can now add philanthropist to her MDSA legacy with the creation of two memorial, need-based, half-tuition scholarships.
Ernestine B. Daum, GP’87, was a wise woman despite her lack of formal education beyond the eighth grade. Her son-in-law, John Joseph (Joe) Reynolds III P’87, achieved academic success and later built a distinguished career as a photographer, writer, tech pioneer, and community builder on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Ernestine and Joe shared a love of family, a commitment to service, and a deeply rooted faith that continues to bear fruit today.
Fran Daum once asked her mother, “If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?” Ernestine responded, “I wish I could have had the chance to pursue more education. I would have truly loved to be a teacher.” The recipient of the Ernestine B. Daum Scholarship may not pursue teaching, but she will now have access to one of the finest Catholic educations available.
Words cannot express our gratitude to Fran Daum for her commitment to MDSA. We look forward to seeing the fruits of her faith through the living legacy of scholarships established in memory of Ernestine Daum GP'87 and Joe Reynolds III P'87.
Executive Director of Advancement
Two members of the Class of 2030 will benefit from Ernestine B. Daum Scholarship and the Joe Reynolds III Scholarship. These new scholarships, which will follow the students for their four years at MDSA, represent an almost 50-year legacy at MDSA!

Ways to Consider Giving to Mount de Sales
HONORARY GIFTS
An honorary gift is a perfect way to honor someone special. The honoree will receive a card mentioning the occasion, name, and address of the donor.
MEMORIAL GIFTS
Family members and friends may give a gift in recognition of a loved one’s life. The surviving family will receive an acknowledgement with the name and address of the donor.
BEQUESTS/ESTATE PLANNING
A bequest to Mount de Sales Academy is a powerful expression of your belief in and support of our mission. An estate gift provides significant future support to Mount de Sales Academy. You can provide for the school in your will or in a trust. The full value of a bequest is deductible for federal estate tax purposes, and there is no limit to the size of a bequest.
INDEPENDENT RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS (IRAS)
Assets in qualified retirement plans—such as 401(k)s, 403(b)s, IRAs, and Keoghs—can increase an estate’s value beyond thresholds set by Congress, potentially incurring federal and state estate taxes. Thoughtful planning can help reduce taxes on these assets.
One option is to designate a percentage of retirement plan assets to Mount de Sales Academy. Because charitable gifts are fully deductible from the estate, this approach can reduce tax liability and may allow heirs to receive more.
STOCK OPTIONS / APPRECIATED SECURITIES
If you own appreciated securities held for more than twelve months and donate them to Mount de Sales Academy, you may benefit by:
claiming a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the shares
avoiding the capital gains tax that would apply if the shares were sold
For more information on giving, please contact Beth Saverino ‘87, executive director of advancement, at esaverino@mountdesales.org or 410-744-8498 ext. 139.
United in Mission Serving the School That Shaped Us:
Alumnae Faculty & Staff
Past & Current Parent Faculty & Staff
After visiting Mount de Sales for the first time as a student, I left with an undeniable sense of peace that I still find when walking through these doors. It is rare to find that in a school, and perhaps even rarer to find a workplace where God is so clearly present as He is at Mount de Sales. I love coming to campus knowing that God is my employer first and foremost, and at the heart of the school, we strive to serve Him.
Allie Plaut Jung ’08 Philosophy Teacher TOP ROW, FIRST FROM THE RIGHT
From the moment we first visited Mount de Sales as prospective parents, the way the Sisters and community received our family — seeing and addressing our daughter by name — revealed how special this place is. When the opportunity later arose for me to work at MDSA, it felt like a natural extension of gratitude: a chance to offer my vocation and gifts back into the mission of the school. To pour into the girls’ formation and growth is a true gift for me!

MDSA emphasized confidence, accountability, and leadership, encouraging students to speak up, take on responsibility, and lead with integrity—lessons that carried Colleen through college and into her career.
She has served on the Alumnae Association Board since 2013, after being recruited by her former classmate Elizabeth Binette Mahon ’07, who was serving as Director of Alumnae Relations at the time. Colleen’s involvement is also deeply rooted in family tradition; her grandmother, Katherine “Gene” Gately Murray ’40, served on the board for many years, inspiring her to follow in her footsteps.
Serving on the Board is deeply meaningful to Colleen, as it provides the opportunity to give back to a school that helped shape her foundation and to sustain its legacy of faith, leadership, service, and sisterhood. She encourages alumnae to get involved, noting that the Association fosters meaningful crossgenerational relationships, networking and mentorship opportunities, and continued support for current students.
Jessica Wilson Baldini ’09 Vice President
MDSA instilled in her a strong work ethic and a commitment to high standards that prepared her well for college and her career. Personally, it laid the foundation for her spiritual life and deepened her relationship with God. The constant presence of Jesus on campus and the daily example of the Dominican Sisters helped her recognize the importance of carrying her faith beyond her high school years.
She has served on the Alumnae Association Board on and off for nearly 10 years, holding leadership roles from President to now Vice President. Jessica’s deep love for MDSA inspired her involvement, particularly the opportunity to connect with fellow alumnae and help provide scholarships for current students.
Through volunteering and monthly meetings, Jessica has built meaningful relationships rooted in shared memories and a shared love for the school, and she encourages other alumnae to get involved to experience the same connection, wisdom, and sense of service.
Jeanne Schaible Langeluttig ‘84
Treasurer
Mount de Sales fostered confidence, leadership, and intellectual curiosity, equipping Jeanne to approach challenges thoughtfully, lead with accountability, and make decisions that balance both financial and human impact.
She has served on the Alumnae Association Board for more than 20 years, inspired by classmates and alumnae whose dedication demonstrated the lasting impact of giving back. Serving on the Board allows her to honor the values instilled at MDSA while supporting the next generation of young women.
She encourages alumnae to get involved, build relationships across generations, and expand professional and personal networks. Danielle Wilson Angelucci ‘11 Secretary
More than academic preparation, Mount de Sales taught Danielle what it means to be a daughter of God and to seek fulfillment through service to the Lord. The education she received prepared her for the rigor of college while instilling lifelong skills such as time management, recognizing the gifts of others, and keeping faith at the center of her life.
For the past ten years, Danielle has served as Secretary of the Alumnae Association Board. After returning to Maryland following college, she felt called to give back to the community that helped form her. Serving her alma mater through the Alumnae Association is a meaningful expression of gratitude for all that Mount de Sales has given her.
She finds deep purpose in her role on the Alumnae Association Board, which— like Mount de Sales itself—is built upon generations of women sharing their time and talents in support of future students. Though years removed from graduation, she remains connected.
Founded in 1896, the Alumnae Association at Mount de Sales Academy offers concrete ways to be involved after graduation. The Alumnae Association sponsors events such as the Crab Feast and the Easter Egg Hunt to benefit both current students as well as alumnae. The purpose of our events, in addition to fellowship, is to fund scholarships for current students.
In order for the Alumnae Association to thrive, we need YOU to be involved! Please consider joining us for a meeting. The Alumnae Association meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in Alumnae Hall.

was a vibrant and heartwarming celebration, welcoming over 100 guests for a time of connection, reflection, and shared sisterhood. We were delighted to celebrate four reunion classes—1995, 2000, 2005, and 2020—who came together in one joyful gathering, highlighting the unique opportunity this event offers to connect across generations. A truly special moment was honoring our oldest attending alumna from the Class of 1947, a powerful reminder of the lasting legacy and strength of our alumnae community.
The brunch continues to be a meaningful and easy way for classes to reunite, visit campus, and celebrate together without the need to plan a separate event.
We encourage alumnae to consider hosting their next reunion at the Alumnae Brunch and be part of this growing tradition that brings our community together year after year. Questions about your class reunion?
