Letter from the Principal Dear Friends of Mount de Sales Academy, The year before I entered the convent, I was working to pay down my student loans so that the congregation would not be unreasonably burdened with my educational debt. A family knew my story and wanted to be supportive so they would invite me to dinner on occasion so I could enjoy a free meal and great comradery. After one particular dinner, I happened to glance at an icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help that I found beautiful. To my surprise, the husband got up and took the icon from the wall and told me he thought I was supposed to have it. Later that night, their little girl gave me a sealed envelope and told me she wanted to donate to help me pay off my loans. When I drove home, my heart was full of the generosity displayed by this family. I was intensely curious to know what the little girl had given, I couldn’t imagine her allowance was that substantial. When I opened her gift, it contained a note of encouragement and a one-dollar bill. I promptly discerned that I should place the dollar behind the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help as a reminder that I was not alone and that Our Lady would take care of this. One year later through a series of many miracles (too long a story to put in this letter). I entered the convent with 100% of my college loans pledged or paid by other benefactors. I have often reflected on the value of that dollar and the role that family and friendship play in overcoming obstacles. In a similar way, I’d like to propose that this Honor Roll of Donors is a testament to the generosity that exists among the family and friends who believe in the Mount de Sales mission wanting to do their part one donation at a time. The ennobling task of providing a quality education while offering competitive salaries, keeping tuition affordable and protecting the heritage of our historic campus cannot be done by one person alone. The story of Mount de Sales is the story of a family coming together, year after year, to leave a legacy for those to come. Our theme, “Proclaim the Greatness of the Lord,” is taken from Mary’s Magnificat and it is my hope that each of us would, like Our Lady, sing a song of praise for all the marvelous deeds the Lord has done. As we celebrate 175 years of educating young women, we look on our past with gratitude, we desire to live deeply the grace of the present moment, and we anticipate ways we can be a gift to others both now and in the years ahead.
