My Little Corner
I’ve been called an opinionated person a time or two in my life, and certainly have my own interpretation of many things! Even so, I have chosen to reserve only a little corner of the paper for those thoughts of the publisher/editor. This past week has flown by as we prepared for the debut issue of Shootin’ the Breeze. I’ve spent time throughout the distribution area meeting business owners and chatting with people on the street about what we’re doing. Most of the feedback has been positive, although not 100 per cent of course! Through my travels and research in the past few months I’ve been impressed by the neat shops, the fascinating people,
and the variety of events offered in the region that we have chosen to cover. Last week I overheard one shopkeeper describe himself as “a husband’s dream” in reference to the variety of items on his shelves to appeal to women, and visited with a business owner and his daughter who really knew how to shoot the breeze! I learned how real chocolate is made, and came across many interesting story ideas. I felt heartsick for the Hebert family of Sparwood and thrilled for them when Kienan was returned home. I watched enthusiastic kids play street hockey for hours despite the heat, and now can’t wait to see what next week brings! - Shannon Robin, Publisher

Pincher Creek youth were treated to a taste of road hockey on Sept. 10. Organizers Jacqui Bruns, Kelly Lepine, and Elizabeth Conley began planning the event this past May. Their goal was to promote hockey in the community. They did this through talking about the event, talking about it some more, and then even more! The organizers wanted to ensure that every child felt welcome to participate whether or not they are involved with the local minor hockey association. Jacqui explained that the tournament was all about building community spirit and having fun playing hockey. The group had the support of many sponsors, including the Town of Pincher Creek through the donated use of the local arena and Shell for a $1,000 cash donation. Last spring $2,000 was raised through Enmax pond hockey. Five days prior to the tournament only six players were registered, and organizers were concerned that the turnout would not be as strong as they had anticipated. The date chosen last spring turned out to be the same as the pee wee football jamboree and several other area events. By Friday 48 youth were registered, and when it was all said and done on Saturday, about 140 youngsters, aged five to 15, had taken to the
pavement. Brothers Zakk, 5, and Jett, 6, Harper took a moment to share their thoughts. Zakk said that his highlight of the day was when “Jett was being the goalie”. Jett enjoyed scoring three goals and when “as goalie I ducked down and my pad blocked it”. After playing four games under the hot afternoon sun, Wesley, 9, and Zachary, 12, Krampe were still raring to go and impressed with the goals that they had scored. For $5 each, the eager kids played hockey all day and received complimentary treat bags and drinks. Family members and friends watched from the sidelines and bleachers as the sweaty, red-faced kids had a blast! Approximately 25 volunteers ensured that things ran smoothly while a DJ played lively music, cotton candy was spun, burgers were flipped, and shoppers browsed the free equipment up for grabs. Inside the arena there was a massive, inflated obstacle course along with a smaller bouncy castle. This area was a hubbub of activity between games with a few adults even joining in the fun. Plans for next year include an opportunity for adults to participate in the road hockey challenge which should draw an even larger number of participants.

The Elk Valley/B.C. SPCA Paws for a Cause Walk will take place Sept. 18 at the Fernie Aquatic Centre dog park. Special features of this year’s event are an agility show, vet talk, and much more. Animal lovers are encouraged to take part in the B.C. SPCA’s signature event, and to help the organization “speak for those who can’t speak for themselves”. The 2011 provincial goal is to raise one million dollars for animals in need through walks taking place across British Columbia. The Willow Creek Community Adult Learning Society in Fort Macleod is offering group classes for beginning guitarists. Participants must be 14 years or older, and need to bring their own acoustic guitar to the lessons. Instructors Ryland Moranz, Brent Hutchinson, and Jon Helm will teach basic chords and licks to old classics and standards. No previous music experience is necessary for these hands-on classes. Classes will be held Sept. 17, Oct. 15, and Nov. 19 from noon to 1 p.m. at
the Empress Theatre. There is a $10 fee per class. Exercise Dark Squeeze
Exercise Dark Squeeze will be executed at Mount Ptolemy in the Crowsnest Pass Sept. 16 to 18. Search and rescue volunteers, technical rescue teams, cavers, responding agencies and rescue support organizations will participate in the multi-agency interprovincial rescue exercise. According to the Alberta Cave Rescue Organization website, the realistic exercise includes rescue, back country, logistical and management skills such as caving, above and below ground rope rescue, patient management, quadding, four-wheel driving, helicopter operations, radio communications, large scale logistics operations, and incident management. There are rescue components suitable for most skill and fitness levels. On Friday you can take in game one at the Thunder Challenge in Coleman, attend the Junior Rodeo in Nanton, listen to Duane Steele in Claresholm, shop at the Pincher Creek farmers market, or two-step at the Windy Rafters Barn Dance near Fort Macleod. The Thunder Challenge continues on Saturday (and Sunday), and Duane Steele moves his performance to Pincher Creek. If you missed the Friday farmers market you can pick up your produce in Nanton and catch the last run-up of the Lancaster bomber for the season or the High School Rodeo which also runs Sunday. There will be meat draws at the local Legions, as well as the Legion horseshoe tournament in Claresholm. In Fernie you can tee up with Emily Brydon at her charity golf tournament, or walk for the SPCA. You can also take in a Mexican meal and Bitterweed Draw at Twin Butte.

Diamond Heist Doris Blackburn was glowing Thursday night as she celebrated the 75th anniversary of Blackburn Jewellers in Pincher Creek. Invitations to the event were sent out last spring, and friends, family and customers joined Doris at the Fox Theatre for the special event. Attendees were treated to catered appetizers, popcorn and lemonade, and had a choice of two movies to view. Doris visited with guests and handed out many wonderful door prizes prior to show time. In the lobby were two cupcake displays arranged in a “75” design, and inside one of those cupcakes was a diamond valued at $1,500.
