Last week I received a call from Kay Kerr, asking to have Mr. Quarin call her about an error in the story he wrote in celebration of her Diamond Jubilee Medal. One of Kay’s many accomplishments was creating a gravy recipe that Colonel Sanders loved and implemented for all the Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises. I knew right away what the omission was in the story. You see, Brad (Mr. Quarin) is too young to have tasted the yummy, spicy gravy that Kay concocted. Kay felt it was a “glaring error” that we didn’t clarify that her recipe is no longer the one used by KFC. She’s right, it’s an important bit of information that wasn’t conveyed. After the story was published, this crossed my mind as I considered that Brad had likely never sampled Kay’s gravy. I, on the other hand, remember it well and wish I could still dunk fries and Grecian bread into that wonderful, peppery sauce. So, today I’m taking a trip down KFC memory lane. I can recall times when my parents would pick up a bucket of chicken and we’d head out to Little Red River Park – a few miles from our home in Prince Albert, Sask. I was pretty young and we didn’t do it often, but I smile automatically when thinking of sunny days eating at a picnic table in the park. There were always leftovers, and I was usually the first one sneaking into the bucket of chicken the next day. I actually preferred the chicken cold, and when no one was looking I would make it taste even better by dunking a chunk into the tub of cold gravy. I liked Kay’s gravy so much I thought it would make a great sandwich spread – cold gravy smeared on top of a piece of fresh bread. I got caught on that one, and was taught the

lesson that it’s a must to reheat the gravy to boiling. So much for my culinary creativity. When we moved to Nipawin a few years later, there was no KFC. What a shame! Soon one was up and running, and guess who was first in line? As you can see, someone should have called the fashion police before letting me out of the house that day. Apparently, brushing my hair at the age of 12 was less of a priority than being the door crasher at the new fast-food outlet. My dad jokes that I was almost famous that day, but only made it to page 8 in the local newspaper. For $3.25 you could get a three-piece meal with country gravy, french fries and Grecian bread – pretty sweet! My family and friends have often joked about my love for KFC gravy. I always saved the leftover gravy, and always heated it to boiling. It was too scrumptious to waste. Sorry for the omission, Kay. I was a huge fan and would love a copy of your secret recipe.

John shares kudos for his Lundbreck legacy By Brad Quarin
Even in retirement, John Sinnott likes to keep busy. John currently resides in Pincher Creek’s Crestview Lodge, which he says is a “perfect fit” for him, partly because it includes workshop space for building things. “I’m one of the more active members,” he says, which is why he also helps the lodge’s activities co-ordinator. That fondness for building and working may be what led to John receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in January. John was a leading force in giving Lundbreck its Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre, a place for seniors’ recreational activities and entertainment. But John won’t take all the credit for that medal. “I think it belongs to the people of Lundbreck and district, they were the ones who did all the work,” he says. “I don’t think I did anything out of the ordinary, I just identified a need and got all the seniors working.” John was born in Pincher Creek. “I never got very far away,” he says, besides going to agricultural college. Originally a farmer, he became a farm machinery dealer and then the owner of a gas bar and convenience store in Lundbreck. Liking to work, John says he doesn’t mind retirement but had to get used to it. It was during retirement that he led the movement for a seniors centre. “This whole idea was actually my wife’s,” John says. Alice enjoyed going out for coffee with her friends, he recalls, and had mentioned a desire for something like the Windsor Heritage Drop-In Centre. “She liked to give back to the community, she was on various different councils and things like that,” he says. Unfortunately, she passed away before her idea for a centre was revived as a centennial project for Alberta

and Lundbreck. In a way, the centre was built in her memory, but John says they didn’t push it as a memorial for Alice. The idea was for a permanent place for anything like hobby clubs, exercise clubs, coffee meetings, educational programs, movie nights and celebrations of retirements, anniversaries and birthdays. The centre would be for the whole area. “It’s there to enjoy,” he says. John’s contribution was to organize the seniors into a club and sell memberships. At
one point, the club had 185 members. He was elected president and served for four of the five years it took to put up the centre. During that time, he took part in fundraising functions and received donations from the community. “I actually lived and breathed that place for five years,” he says. He feels they achieved a lot. “We started with nothing, and wound up with a $350,000 building, debt-free.” Despite having concerns the building would go largely unused and prove to be a “white elephant,” he says the drop-in centre is used all the time. John himself still drives to Lundbreck to visit the centre. These days, besides pursuing his lifelong hobby of woodworking, John serves as resident representative for Crestview Lodge. His role is to report between the residents and the board of directors. The people at the lodge are like family, he says. Lodge manager Millie Loeffler says John does good work and has good ideas. They nominated him for the Minister’s Seniors Service Award, and although he didn’t get it, Millie thinks it’s what got John noticed for the Diamond Jubilee Medal. She is very pleased with it and thinks he’s deserving. John was surprised when he learned he would receive the medal. He thinks someone in MLA Pat Stier’s office nominated him, but doesn’t know who specifically. He received the medal from the lieutenant-governor in Lethbridge, along with people who he says did bigger things than he did. He found it interesting to meet them. His family is proud, and so is John – of his fellow-seniors. “A lot of people think that seniors sit on the shelf, but my philosophy is, I might be on the shelf, but I sure as hell ain’t dead yet, and I’m not about to lay down and die.” The message is clear as crystal.

ClansWest honoured by peers

For the second year in a row, local real estate company ClansWest Development Ltd. was recognized as the business of the year, in the trades and professionals category, by the Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce. Clanswest co-founder Shane Stewart is pleased with the win at the 2012 Business Awards, which came as the company celebrated its 10th anniversary. “We were delighted and excited that we were thought of,” Shane says. The award category is for professionals and tradespeople such as plumbers, electricians and builders. ClansWest develops land, builds and sells custom homes and condominiums for families, and renovates houses and buildings. The company provides “distinctive homes in the mountains,” Shane says. Originally from Toronto, Shane came to the Pass in 2000 while working in the trucking business. He started ClansWest in 2002 with his father, Ron, his brother Rob, Betty Glen and her son Brad Glen.

The company marked its 10th year in business with a number of promotions, including free upgrades to homes such as granite countertops. The award came after a summer that Shane describes as good for business. “We had a very good year this year and we continue to focus on our core principles,” he says. “Our core principles are hard work and quality.” Shane believes those principles and the related customer service are what earned ClansWest its second award. “I think our customers appreciate that we do our utmost to under-promise and over-deliver,” he says. ClansWest values its award, which is proudly displayed at the office. “It’s a great honour in my mind, because we’ve been chosen by our peers,” Shane says. He has built 54 houses, he says. Some of the challenges the business faces include obtaining building supplies, but Shane says local businesses help out with that. As well, scheduling the labour is hard when everyone is busy.

You may know someone who does a lot for the community and gets woefully little recognition. If you want this person to get that much-deserved or long-overdue pat on the back, now’s your chance to make it happen. The Municipality of Crowsnest Pass is accepting nominations until March 22 for the Order of Crowsnest Pass, an award for outstanding local volunteer work. The honour, sometimes affectionately known as the Order of the Crow, has been given out annually since 1983. “The recipients in the past have just been very community-minded people, always giving up their time for various clubs and organizations and events,” says Bonnie Kawasaki. She is a programmer for Family and Community Support Services, a provincially funded program concerned with the community’s social needs. She explains the town adopted the nomination process last year to get the public involved. “We felt this way we’re not missing anybody,” Bonnie says. “There may be volunteers out there that we’re not particularly aware of.” Also last year, a second honour, the Order of Crowsnest Pass Outstanding Youth Award, was adopted to celebrate volunteers aged 12 to 18. “We may not recognize that students and youth are out there volunteering in our community, but they are in many capacities, so it’s nice to be able to recognize that as well,” Bonnie says. The Order will be bestowed during volunteer appreciation night on April 25 at the Blairmore Elks Hall, an occasion to thank all Crowsnest Pass volunteers. This year’s theme for the decorations and gifts is Volunteers are Stars, Bonnie says. If you want to nominate someone, he or she must be a resident of the Pass who hasn’t received the award before. Members of the selection committee and town council are ineligible. There is a nomination form to pick up at the town office and fill out. Each nomination should also come with two letters of support, one being from the nominator, explaining why the candidate is deserving. A selection committee, likely made up of FCSS and recreation board members, will then review, discuss and vote on the nominations. Nominations can be dropped off at the town office at 8502 19th Ave. in Coleman. If you have questions, call Bonnie at 403-562-8833.

A little bit of puppy love

While their masters visit with Crestview Lodge residents over coffee, a group of dogs are busy playing, looking for treats, interacting with the seniors and sharing an abundance of puppy love. “It’s therapeutic,” says Cathy Klein, activity co-ordinator at Crestview. “It brings back childhood memories for many who grew up with a dog on their farm,” she says. “All a dog has to do is look at you and the connection is made.” Crestview staff notice that visiting with the dogs can lift the spirits of someone who’s not feeling well or calm someone who’s feeling angry. Residents who don’t speak often have been known to have quiet conversations with the dogs, and to hug and kiss them. The dogs seem to know what each person needs. Barb Blachford was invited to bring her Pomeranian/poodle cross, Kipper, to Crestview. She was joined by Nancy Keenan with her standard poodle, Alf, and by Shirley Barclay and her shih-tzu, Chrissy. “It grew from there,” Barb says. Eight years later, she continues to visit at Crestview once a month and at Vista Village twice a month. It’s not always the same combination of people and dogs, but everyone looks forward to the days marked as dog days on the calendar. Kipper is nine years old now, and doesn’t come as often due to health issues. In his place, Barb often brings Lannie, who has made himself right at home. She jokes that the fluffy bichon is a typical two-year-old with toys all over the house and a few obedience issues they are working on. Barb always wanted a dog, and asked for
a pup every Christmas. Her husband, Ian, wasn’t fond of dogs. When Barb treated herself to the gift of a puppy, she says Ian didn’t speak to her for a week. She’s quick to add that now he wouldn’t trade Kipper or Lannie for anything. Lannie has some big paw prints to fill if he wants to keep up with his brother Kipper. The older dog is active in agility, barrel racing and even square dancing with the Southern Alberta Working Herding Dog Association. Newcomers to the group are Atar and Diesel, who bring along their owner, Patti Brososky. All Patti needs to say is one word – “Showtime!” – and the dogs are ready to go. Patti describes Diesel as crusty and cranky. The nine-year-old pug likes to keep everyone together, and when a resident gets up to leave the room it’s fun to watch as Diesel tries to herd him or her back to the rest of the group. He’s also got a great nose for treats. Atar is a large German shepherd who has been with Patti for three years since his job as an avalanche search dog finished. He is calm and docile and is seldom found without a squeaky ball in his mouth. During his working years, he had to be ready to go with a moment’s notice. Now, Patti says, he’s happy just to sleep with his blankie on the bed. “He’s just a pup with a past,” she says. Puppy love is going a long way in what Patti describes as a win-win-win situation. “The owners, the dogs and the residents get so much from this,” she says. It goes to show that a little bit of puppy love can make a whole lot of difference.

Running in the moonlight By Brenda Shenton
It’s about fun, fitness and families. Pincher Creek had 41 participants in the 26th annual Moonlight Run last Saturday in Lethbridge. Nineteen of those runners were part of a local running club, initiated in January by Sariah Brasnett of Monster Fitness. She says the club decided as a group to do the Moonlight Run, with at least half of the members doing it for the first time. Five of the members did the 10K walk/run, the others the 6K run. “It was fantastic for our group. They absolutely loved it and we have now signed up for three more runs,” says Sariah. The group meets at the gym Saturday mornings at 9:30 a.m. for a run, stretching and a follow-up talk on topics such as nutrition. There is no charge and new members are welcome. The popular Moonlight Run has grown in numbers over the years and this year had 2,500 confirmed runners. In the past, $115,000 has been donated to various charities, and proceeds from this year’s event go to the Lethbridge Interfaith Food Bank and the Lethbridge coulee cleanup program.

The question of what exactly you’re going to do after high school can be a tough one. A student might not have to decide just yet, but it could be a great benefit to know what possibilities are out there. The Southwestern Alberta PostSecondary Fair is aiming to get that knowledge out and shine some light into an uncertain student’s future. The fair will take place at Matthew Halton High School on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and is open to the public in Pincher Creek and area. Michelle Spencer is a parent on the school council, which is organizing the fair. She describes it as a “come-and-go thing” in which people can drop in at any convenient time during those three hours. About 25 different schools or groups will have tables and people to answer questions. The University of Alberta, the University of Lethbridge, SAIT, NAIT, Lethbridge College, the RCMP and the Canadian Forces are among those expected. The event is open to high school and junior high school students, including those from St. Michael’s School and Lundbreck. Although the event is planned mainly for kids, adults interested in a career change may benefit too, Michelle says. She says a fair like this is unusual outside of bigger centres like Lethbridge, and the universities and colleges were willing to participate to reach students in smaller schools. “They were really keen on it.” She hopes this is something the community can do every year.

Mountain Mania promotes the Pass
By Brad Quarin When Crowsnest Pass Property Management launched a new contest to promote its rental business and the Pass area, the star of last year’s contest, Passquatch, insisted on taking part. The current contest, Mountain Mania, kicked off on Feb. 17. It’s not too late to join the online challenge to name local mountains, with a chance to win some cash prizes. “It’s basically just to have fun,” says Loreena Russomanno, who owns the business and wants to make life easier for her customers. “I get that they’re stressed, when people are looking to rent a new home, so I just want to make it fun for them.” Loreena moved her family to Crowsnest Pass from Hinton 11 years ago, and her children, then quite young, weren’t too enthusiastic about it. “There wasn’t really a lot of things that I could show the kids [about] how cool it’s going to be to come here, so I wanted to do that for people,” she says. “Then it just ended being open to everybody.” She started Crowsnest Pass Property Management five years ago to rent buildings and homes for commercial and residential purposes. The business has two employees and several subcontractors who perform electrical, plumbing and other work. After attending a couple Alberta Tourism conferences, Loreena considered how to entertainingly promote her business and showcase the community. The first contest, Passquatch Search, was a hit. Pictures of the elusive local sasquatch were posted and participants had to identify
his locations. Passquatch is an intentionally ugly character, “But he’s still cute in an ugly sort of way,” Loreena says. That look was meant to catch people’s attention, and it worked. You had to be in Crowsnest Pass to win Passquatch Search, but the contest attracted interest even from people who weren’t eligible. People still send Loreena emails asking what Passquatch is doing these days, so the ape still serves as a company mascot and he’s helping to promote Mountain Mania. Families can answer trivia questions about Crowsnest Pass mountains on Facebook after some online research. The questions are meant to be easy so children can take part. You can submit your answers at the end of the contest, and if you get all of them right, your name could be drawn for a first-place cash prize of $300 or a second-place prize of $100. The $300 comes from Crowsnest Pass Property Management and the $100 comes from Rocky Mountain Properties, a business that builds new homes. The level of interest in the contest has been good, as at least 1,000 people are following the contest and more than 5,000 have watched the promotional video on YouTube. Loreena wants to do a contest at least once every year, with the next to be held in the summer or next year. Ideas for the next two contests are already planned. Backyard Wildlife is much like Mountain Mania, as participants will identify local animals, and Historical Quest will challenge people to identify historical sites. Enjoy, and keep watching for that primate.

Passing the turkey torch By Cory Schultz
The annual turkey supper in Crownest Pass, started years ago as a church fundraiser, has become a much-anticipated social event for many local residents. In 1963, Hillcrest United Church hosted the first turkey supper and served about 75 meals to the congregation and community members. Over the years, this event has grown, and last year about 675 meals were served to those who came out to the MDM Centre and to those who had meals delivered, courtesy of the local volunteer fire departments. Through the years, the annual turkey supper has moved locations numerous times. It was originally held at the Hillcrest United Church annex but, because of its popularity, it was moved to the old Hillcrest School, which had been converted to a community centre in 1962. The next relocation was to the new Hillcrest Community Hall, then to the Mapleview Hall before finally settling in at the MDM. One of the constants at the turkey supper is Margaret Woodward, who started volunteering at the supper as a high school student in 1963. Margaret, Belle Kovach, Beryl Orr, Margaret Stolk and many other volunteers are a team who have provided Crowsnest Pass with a wonderful meal and an opportunity for friends to visit with one another. This occasion has also become a significant fundraising event, benefiting both the Hillcrest Coke and Coal Park and the Bellevue Memorial Arena Park. For many years, the turkey supper was held in the fall, until a few years ago when the H1N1 virus scare forced a delay of the event. It was rescheduled to the following spring and, since this was widely viewed as a positive move, it was decided to permanently hold it in March. Although it was cancelled a couple of times (due to the Hillcrest United Church closure and the H1N1 scare), the event always managed to find its footing again and carried on after these brief interruptions. However, as successful as the turkey supper is, it is time for the torch to be passed on to the next generation of volunteers. The existing group of volunteers would like to see this tradition continue and to share the knowledge they have acquired over the years. The churches of Pincher Creek are keeping up their tradition of coming together for Lenten services and lunches. The United Church has been the place for the lunches during the 40-day period leading up to Easter. The remaining three lunches will be held today and on March 20 and 27. “It’s certainly open to anyone who wants to come,” says United Church minister Brent Woodard. That said, it’s mostly regular churchgoers who take part. Each event goes from noon to 1 p.m., starting with a half-hour devotional service and then lunch, which is typically soup and sandwiches. The lunch service is designed so working people can attend and get back to their jobs after the lunch hour.

These lunches go back at least 12 years. When Brent lived in Guelph, they had similar lunch services there, and he brought the idea to Pincher Creek after moving here in 2000. “Generally the people who come have appreciated that.” This year, attendance at the lunch services has been down from 80 or 90 people to 50 or 60 people, but Brent says those numbers are “still quite healthy” and worthwhile. Reasons for the decline might be that the novelty of the lunches has worn off, or that it’s just a reflection of how church attendance is generally decreasing. Brent describes the events as a great opportunity for churches to meet and for people to hear from other churches’ ministers. People are mostly comfortable in their own churches. That said, interfaith

co-operation isn’t too unusual. “Generally church people are supportive and helpful of one another,” he says. Overall, Lent brings more opportunities than this. “Lent is a period of potentially having a different way of life,” Brent says. Some people abstain from coffee during the 40 days, and one girl in the United Church is giving up junk food for the period. However, Sundays are a break from Lent, which means coffee and junk food are OK that day. Brent jokes he’s giving up being grouchy for Lent. Some people also abstain from meat, but the United Church doesn’t require that the lunches be vegetarian. To Brent, Lent isn’t a time for Christians to punish themselves, but rather a time to become more aware. He believes many people aren’t conscious of why they have certain habits, as they don’t know their own needs, desires and fears. Jesus’ message was to awaken people. “Life does something to wake us up,” he says. After Lent, members of the United Church will have Good Friday services.

Joe Trotz, president of Kananaskis Rodeo Association, arrived in style to accept a $2,500 donation from Servus Credit Union Monday morning. Campaign director Lisa Lockhart says the donation will go to the rodeo as a whole, rather than to specific events. “Servus Credit Union has been a sponsor for a number of years,” she says. “The rodeo wouldn’t be possible without sponsors.” The Servus flag will be carried by the girls during the grand entry ride at the rodeo to acknowledge the emerald-level sponsorship.
Reading week was painting week at ISS

Students came back to Isabelle Sellon School in Blairmore to find their walls had become a little more colourful over reading week. Grade 6 students Maeve Rothlin and Tori Wakaluk, both 11, completed a new mural of a school bus on the “road to success” with values like respect, humour and kindness. The mural also features ISS itself and a road sign saying “Stop and smell the flowers.”
The two girls enjoy art, with Maeve noting her mom is an artist. “I like to draw,” Tori says. The mural took four days to paint, with the girls working from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tori explains that the previous mural was old and ISS wanted a new one. The girls say some of the old murals were grey and dark, and the other students like the new mural’s colour. Principal Paul Pichurski also says their work looks nice.
