Warming up to Christmas The warm light of candles shining through stained glass windows is a beautiful thing. Although there was no heat turned on at the Heritage Acres chapel, those who gathered to share fellowship and song last Friday night were warmed by the atmosphere of the room itself. The non-denominational service was highlighted with carols sung by Friends in Sync, and musical accompaniment by Jackie Therriault. Helen Blackburn showcased her whistling talents at the luncheon afterward.

My Little Corner I have another secret to share ... I’m “one of those people” who loves Christmas music. Much like bagpipes, people seem to love it or dislike it without much middle ground. I won’t tell you exactly how many seasonal tunes are on my computer hard drive, and in my various ages and stages of music storage. However, I can tell you that I could let it play nonstop for at least a week. It likely won’t surprise anyone that this mortifies my teenaged daughter. Music is more important to people than most of us realize. We don’t consciously make associations, but they happen, and it only takes a bar or two of a particular song to pull out an emotional response or memory. Songs from the ’80s are lots of fun because the high school memories that come flooding out of the closet with particular tunes.
I love to listen to young children sing with purity and innocence so strong in their voices. It reminds me of years of singing with my dad with a small beat up hymnal, a good old Co-op sing-along book, and a beat up guitar. Singing is the best thing you can do for yourself when you’re having a bad day. Whether it’s “Zip-a-deedoo-dah” in the bathtub, punching out a bit of heavy metal (yes, I sing out loud to AC/DC) or a lullaby to a child, I dare you to sing with a frown on your face – it just isn’t possible! Songs with sadness attached to them are the tough ones. I can’t sing “Amazing Grace.” I sang it for the funeral of a two-month-old who passed away, and I can feel the intensity and depth of her parents’ pain even as I’m typing this – it has stayed with me for almost 20 years.
I had never imagined that a Christmas carol could elicit sadness, but I can’t sing “Silent Night” anymore, which is one of my favourites. It was also a favourite of my fatherin-law, who passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Day. Last Friday we attended a lovely candlelight service at Heritage Acres, and I choked up and held back tears when it was time for “Silent Night.” It was a treat to listen to Friends in Sync, and I’m looking forward to more carol festivals and concerts in the coming weeks. Please remember to share performance dates with us so we can include them in our calendars. If you get frustrated in busy holiday traffic, turn up the radio and sing a Christmas song. You might be surprised at how quickly your smile returns. Shannon Robin

Sherry Mackenzie, committee member of Angels Within Us, was receiving requests for tickets to the group’s 2nd annual fundraising dinner right up to the final hours before it began Dec. 3. With a committee of only 10, it’s amazing what the group has built after operating for only two years! Sherry believes that the “kindness of people’s hearts is amazing” and that everyone who attended has contributed to making a huge difference to someone in need. Support of the event was great not only from within the community, but well beyond. Family and friends of committee members and other attendees came from all over. The evening featured a silent auction with a great variety of donated items, as well as a live auction with everything from two dozen of Faye
Jenkins’s famous cookies to return air tickets to anywhere WestJet flies. The highlight of the evening was the dutch auction for a brand new 2011 Chevy Cruz donated by Keith Foster of Westcastle Motors and the Angels. Once the winning ticket was drawn it took a moment for Lorne and Robin Mackenzie to realize the ticket belonged to them. The couple chose to let the car go back on the auction block rather than driving it home. This netted them half of the auction sale amount, with the other half going to the Angels. Final numbers aren’t available, but the proceeds from the auction exceed $50,000 which will go a long way toward helping the Angels keep up their work in the community.

She and husband Lorne were the winners of the brand new 2011 Chevy Cruz donated by Westcastle Motors of Pincher Creek. Rather than keep the car, the couple chose to let it go back up for cash auction. They received half of the proceeds while the Angels group received the other half. Their contribution helped to make the evening a huge success.

A Regal idea for CNP boys and girls If you’re interested in helping the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club get back on their feet, you can do it with your Christmas shopping as well as your year-round shopping through a special Regal program. Children and parents who’ve had the opportunity to be involved with the Crowsnest Pass Boys and Girls Club were disappointed to receive notice in the fall that it wouldn’t be operating this year. The club wasn’t eligible to apply for several grants which had funded most of its operations in the past, resulting in a significant shortfall in funding. While the club continues to seek alternate sources of financial support, activities have been put on hold. When Jamie Thomson of Coleman received notice of the situation she decided that the club wasn’t going to shut down if she could do anything about it. Jamie contacted the executive members and let them know that in her opinion this “simply will not do and I intend to do something about it.” As a former member and volunteer of the Calgary Boys and Girls Club, Jamie is a strong believer in what it has to offer. She feels strongly that “kids in the community need this program,” and that given the opportunity, people will rise to the challenge of getting it up and running again. It’s a well-known fact that kids with too much time on their hands and too little supervision tend to get into mischief of all degrees. Rather than complaining about it, Jamie hopes people will join her in an effort to do something about the situation. Now that the problem has been identified, here’s what you can do about it! Jamie has set up a Regal fundraiser to assist the club. Regal catalogues have something for everyone, and now something for the boys and girls in the Pass as well. It’s this easy – log on to www.bgccnp.shopregal.ca, choose a catalogue and place your order. CNP Boys and Girls Club will automatically receive 30 per cent of the sale amount, and the order will be shipped directly to you. This means that you don’t even need to live in the area to take part in helping in the club’s revival! Orders can also be placed directly through Jamie, and she’ll donate the portion which would normally be her income on the sale. The fundraiser has been set up as an ongoing project, so you can help out year round each time you place an order. Christmas 1916 The day was quiet, a cease fire declared. In the Allied trenches we waited prepared. In the evening light came a warning, From their trenches German soldiers were swarming. As they approached the Germans sang, Silent Night in a different language sure, But we had never heard a Carol so pure. A murmur grew along our trench, Guns lowered, voices raised, in English and French. Our voices joined the Germans in chorus, As they halted right before us. It was a sight I still don’t believe, Then our sergeant said “It’s Christmas Eve.” Lowered weapons were stowed away, Somewhere in our trench a mouth organ began to play. We rose to meet them, hands were shaken, Gifts of sausage given, gifts of cigarettes taken. We gathered in our trench together, Allies and Germans out of the weather. Men of different faiths and nations, Sharing a mix of army rations. Beer and wine opened with quiet pops, Nothing warms a soldier like German Schnaaps. Pictures of wives and families exchanged, They were all alike, isn’t that strange. A violin, a mouth organ, carols through the night, Peace to all men, our hearts were light. We talked of farming or digging coal, And talked of women and children, We’d like to hold. All too soon the night was gone, Drunkenly we stood and shook hands at dawn. Back to their lines they weaved that way and this, One of them stopped at the edge of the mist. hill on Friday as Castle Mountain Resort staff and supporters have been anxiously “waiting on Mother Nature to do her thing.” The resort will open up Friday at 9:30 a.m. – one day early – for some cruising time on Mount Haig via the Huckleberry Chair. Not all of the terrain will be open, but additional areas will be opened as they are considered safe for the public to ski and ride. The hill uses 100 per cent natural snow, and with La Nina in the winter forecast, skiers and snowboarders should have a great winter ahead. Castle Mountain will be open Dec. 9 to 11, closed from Dec. 12 to 15 and then officially open for the season Dec. 16 at 9:30 a.m. The T-Bar Pub has been expanded and will open Dec. 7 and every day throughout the season. Thunder on ice
By Vanessa Farraj Crowsnest Pass Thunder Pre-novice Team 2 attended their first tournament of the season Dec. 3, hosted by the Elk Valley Wild in Elkford. The team played three games, facing off against their sister team CNP Pre-novice Team 1, Fernie Ghostriders, and Elk Valley Wild. Although the scoreboard showed losses in all three games, the ice proved them all winners. Each player received a commemorative trophy and other goodies. As always, the players showed great sportsmanship and effort and played by the number one rule of having fun. Thanks to all organizers and volunteers for the excellent tournament, and as always, to the parents and relatives who came out to support their team. The Thunder Team 2 are practising hard for their last game before the break against Thunder Team 1 on Dec. 18. The team lost their first game against Fernie Junior Ghostriders by a score of 17-6. Game two was against Crowsnest Thunder Team 2 and we won 12-4. The peewees recorded a win of 10-5 over the Vauxhall Sabres and a win of 7-1 over the Redcliff Grizzlies. The team’s one loss during the tournament was a 7-3 game to Medicine Hat Venom. This weekend the atoms will play teams from Coaldale, Vauxhall and Raymond at a tournament in Coaldale.

Minor Hockey Pincher Creek’s MCC Arena will be the site of an atoms tournament on the weekend. It kicks off Friday evening, Dec. 9, at 8 p.m., runs Saturday from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and finishes up on Sunday, starting at 8 a.m. Come out and support our young athletes. The concession folks will keep you fed and watered, and it’s going to be a great event. In recent local action, the Pincher Creek Atom Chinooks triumphed over the Raymond Ice, the Peigan Cowboys trounced their Siksika rivals the Blackfoot Miners, the Novice 1 team was defeated by the Taber Warriors, and the Midget Huskies blanked Kainai. On Saturday, Dec. 10 the Crowsnest Pass Peewee Thunder will host Picture Butte at 4:30 p.m. The Pre-novice 1 Thunder host the Elk Valley Wild on Sunday, Dec. 11 at 11 a.m. After that game, the Peewee Thunder host the Coaldale Cobras at 12:15 p.m. All games will be held at the Crowsnest Sports Complex in Coleman. Basketball Basketball season is underway. In the Chinook league, St. Michael’s School will be up against Lundreck at Livingstone School on Wednesday, Dec. 7, with the girls starting at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:45 p.m. Also on Wednesday, the J.T. Foster girls team in Nanton will host Coaldale, another 6 p.m. start.
