Santa Claus has been spotted throughout the region sharing good cheer and promoting holiday spirit. This jolly photo was taken at Copy Magic during Crowsnest Christmas. Santa has also been seen aboard a bright red fire truck during the Pincher Creek parade of lights, cruising down Main Street Fort Macleod with his reindeer at the Santa Claus Parade, and hanging out with Sparky the Fire Dog during the Nanton Lights the Way celebration. You’ll hear his “Ho, ho, ho” at Claresholm’s Old-Fashioned Christmas this Friday!

My Little Corner What a wildly windy week it has been! I’m a little bit tired of my “hair by Mixmaster” look, but I’ve had it pretty easy compared to others who have faced the wind destroying much more than their hairdo. Along with stories of devastation caused by the hurricane-force winds that have pummelled southwestern Alberta for the past week are coming stories of neighbours and strangers jumping to help out. When I tell people I live in Pincher Creek, it’s inevitable that their response has something to do with the wind our area is well known for. I wasn’t surprised to hear the wind howling all week, but was surprised that the considerable damage happened elsewhere.

It was windy last year at this time as well, but the effect was much different at our house! The photos to the right show what Nov. 25, 2010 looked like for us. The top photo shows what we opened our door to that windy morning. The bottom photo shows our neighbours’ son, Kyle Madsen, standing on the drift that joined our yards over the top of the fence. The snow was packed solid and the kids had a great time sliding in our flat back yard that day! Jinger (our dog) and Henry (the Madsens’ dog) spent the winter playing “your yard or mine” over the fence, courtesy of the drift. By March the drift was a rock-solid mass, almost 10 feet deep, that filled the entire yard. I’d like to invite people to share their stories and photos of the week of relentless wind, for potential publication in an upcoming issue. Keeping it local Despite media footage of fights and crowded shopping centres, Canadians continue to join in the spree of Black Friday shopping in the U.S. We live in an area where there is significant variety in what you’ll find from one town to the next. If you can’t find what you’re looking for on your own main street there’s a good chance you can find it in a neighbouring community without having to trek to the city. Your local merchants support community events, provide a high level of customer service and truly appreciate it when your dollars are spent at home. Claresholm celebrates OldFashioned Christmas this Friday, and retailers will have a great array of promotions to go along with the special events happening around town. The event is sponsored jointly by the Claresholm Chamber of Commerce and Claresholm Local Press. Nanton Lights the Way, the Fort Macleod Santa Claus Parade, Crowsnest Christmas and Pincher Creek Moonlight Madness were also initiatives of the chambers of commerce in each community, and the chambers are supported by the local businesses. Just some things to consider as you think about where to find the items on your Christmas list.

Domestic abuse isn’t a pretty topic, but public awareness of issues and options for women in distress is important. Donations to PCWESA through Change for Good will be accepted at ATB Financial, Royal Bank, Credit Union and Co-op locations in Pincher Creek until Nov. 30. PCWESA provides both residential and outreach services for women, and can make referrals for men requiring assistance as well. The need for emergency shelters for abused women has been increasing. According to Statistics Canada, about 64,500 women were admitted to shelters across Canada in 20092010, and Alberta has the third highest rate of readmissions. For more information call 403627-2114.

30 years on After walking the route of the first Santa Claus Parade 30 years ago, Melissa Moses had the privilege to ride in style as the honorary marshal for the anniversary parade, Nov. 26 in Fort Macleod. Hundreds of spectators crowded the streets to catch the bands, clowns, horses, business floats and, of course, Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Amazing student artwork This funky piece of art can not only be yours, but purchasing a copy will support the Livingstone School playground and landscaping project. Each year the Livingstone Range School Division offers a juried art event through their Emerging Artists competition. Despite being one of the smallest schools in the division, the majority of the awards were presented to students of the Livingstone School. hosted the Sunny Sharma Memorial Pee Wee Tournament last weekend. The team tied their first game against the Vauxall Sabres with a score of 1-1, then beat the same team 8-2. Their third game was a loss of 8-0 to the Indus Hurricanes, who went on to take top honours in the tournament. The Crowsnest Pass Thunder novice team played one game last weekend against Taber 2. They had an amazing first period and were down by one goal. The team struggled a bit in the second period, and despite a hard effort in the third, lost 17-6. Despite the last few losses, the novice Thunder continue to have fun, play hard and have a positive attitude. Thank you to minor hockey supporters for submitting game and tournament results!

Hitting the slopes! Matt Mosteller of the Fernie Alpine Resort is pumped after the ski hill kicked off its 50th season with a “fantastic” preview weekend. The snow was great, with people skiing in boot-top to knee-deep powder last Saturday and Sunday. The season will be filled with special activities in celebration of the golden anniversary of the ski hill and in tribute to the skiiers and riders. “With recent huge snowstorms and La Niña forecasted to return this winter, this is the winter to ski Fernie,” Matt says. Dog’s Cough a Worry DEAR PAWS’S CORNER: My friend has a Border Collie mix, “Jeffy,” who is about two or three years old. He snorts or coughs at least 10 or 15 times a day, and when he does, a copious amount of mucus comes out of his nose. Can you tell me what causes this and how to remedy it? -- B.P., Prince George, Va. DEAR B.P.: Coughing in dogs can have a number of causes, ranging from allergy to serious infection. The

Back on the Empyrean, the remaining boys struggle with the loss of their parents and sisters and try to keep the ship running as best they can. Kieran, already trained for leadership, does his best to hold them together, but as dissent and distrust grow among the frightened kids, so do the fractures in their makeshift society.

This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Tintner ruffed dummy’s nine of clubs with the jack of hearts, and Sharif was down one before he could even get started. Declarer had no trouble taking the rest of the tricks. He ruffed the spade return, cashed the A-K of trumps and A-K of diamonds, then ruffed a diamond in dummy, establishing the rest of the suit. However, this was little consolation for someone who had lost a trump trick with a combined total of nine trumps headed by the A-K-Q and the trumps divided 2-2 in the opponents’ hands. Recycle Old Records Into Groovy Gifts Holiday songs abound on the grooves of old 45s and LPs that are no doubt scratched and warped in attics everywhere. But your stored-away keepsakes can have a new life if you get into this holiday gift-making activity. It’s all about warping them even more to create terrific bowls, picture frames, clocks or even a planter for a small holiday poinsettia. First the bowls. You and your kids can change your “oldies but goodies” into unique shapes in less than 30 seconds with these easy directions. An adult or teen should do the first step of the project. In a well-ventilated room, place a record on a sheet of aluminum foil and set in a preheated, 300 F oven. Keep your eye on the record the entire time it is in the oven. ANSWER: The more common urinary tract infection is infection of the bladder -- cystitis. Pyelitis (PIEuh-LITE-iss), now usually called pyelonephritis, is an infection of the kidney itself. It is a much more serious infection, and one that usually makes people take to their bed.

Chocolate Chip Jumbos These cookies are super-large and chock-full of everything -- butter, sugar, chips and nuts. You actually spoon out the batter with an ice-cream scoop! Just remember that one of these jumbos is equivalent to six regular-size cookies. 3 large eggs 1 pounds (4 sticks) butter or margarine, softened 1 package (16-ounce) brown sugar 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 6 cups all-purpose flour 2 packages (12-ounce) semisweet chocolate chips 1 bag (16-ounce) chopped walnuts 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. In very large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat eggs 4 minutes or until light and fluffy. Reduce speed to low; beat in butter, sugars, vanilla, baking soda and salt. Stir in flour, chocolate chips and walnuts (mixture will be very stiff). 2. Line 2 large cookie sheets with parchment paper. Drop dough by level 1/3 cups (or use 2 1/2-inch ice-cream scoop), 2 inches apart, onto prepared cookie sheets. 3. Bake cookies 23-26 minutes or until golden around the edges, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower racks halfway through baking. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool.

In large bowl, with mixer on medium speed, beat butter and brown and granulated sugars until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in egg and vanilla. Reduce speed to low; gradually beat in flour mixture just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, stir in oats, raisins and chocolate chips. 3. Drop dough by heaping measuring tablespoons, 2 inches apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. Bake cookies 13 to 15 minutes or until tops are golden. Transfer cookies to wire racks to cool. 4. HOLLYWOOD -- Parent groups are all over the possibility that NBC will replace CNN talk-show host Piers Morgan on “America’s Got Talent” with radio shock-jock Howard Stern. They’ve informed the network that Stern “is not appropriate for the family-friendly series.” It was on Stern’s show that producer Brett Ratner followed up his anti-gay comment at a Q&A for his film “Tower Heist” with a detailed accounting of his sex life. The one-two punch caused such an outcry in Hollywood that Ratner was compelled to resign as producer of the next Oscar show, quickly followed by the announcement that host Eddie Murphy would resign as well. Insiders speculate Murphy realized he was over his head and wanted out. Ratner got him into it and had to get him out of it! Quentin Tarantino won his Oscar for writing the screenplay of 1994’s “Pulp Fiction.” Now he’s finished directing Oscar-winner Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu in “The Man With the Iron Fist,” due out in October 2012, and is working on his next film, “Django Unchained.” Tarantino’s screenplay is based on the 1966 Italian spaghetti Western “Django,” directed by Sergio Corbucci, which starred Franco Nero and was considered one of the most violent films of its time. Tarantino shifted the time and place to the pre-Civil War south and cast Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx in the title role of an escaped slave turned bounty hunter who returns to the plantation to free his wife. It also stars Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Sasha Baron Cohen and Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo plays a villain who forces slaves into prostitution. Too bad it isn’t a musical ... the hit song could be “Tango with Django!” *** Everyone’s wondering, what was the real reason Regis Philbin left his talk show after nearly three decades? When Regis hosted “Good Morning L.A.,” I was on the set photographing Carol Burnett, whom I’d known since I was 11. Check Holiday Lists Twice! As the holiday season approaches, many of us have holiday parties and gatherings to plan. In these tough economic times, we face the daunting task of keeping alive our family traditions without breaking our budget. The good news is that by being creative and planning carefully, and making lists, you still can make this season fun and memorable. Most of your budget may be spent on purchasing food for the holidays. The following budget-friendly tips and my easy, meatless recipe can help you save money and have fun at the same time. 1. Establish your budget and how much you can afford to spend. Design a menu around your budget and what is seasonal or on sale at the grocery store. Next, write a list of who will be invited. Your budget will guide you on the number of guests you can comfortably invite. 2. Keep a grocery list so you’re less likely to make an impulse purchase. A list also should prevent you from making extra trips to the store. Stick
3. Use coupons! In most cases, grocery stores have great sales on holiday staples like turkeys and hams. Their goal is to get you into the store with the hope that you’ll buy lots of other products that are not on sale. Use this to your advantage, but only buy items you need. Check for online coupons as well. Start with the website of the store where you shop or of products you use. Shopping on double or triple coupon days can save you a lot of money. 4. Buy in bulk. If the price is right and the larger size fits your criteria, go for it! Prices can be deceiving, so pay attention to unit prices to ensure you are getting the best deal. Bigger is not always cheaper. Make sure you will use the food before it spoils. 5. Save on store brands. Buy generic and you could save up to 40 percent a year on your grocery bill. In taste tests, most consumers cannot identify the difference between generic and store brands. 6. Shop high and low. Bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves. The worst deals are at eye level. 7. Pay attention at the checkout. Don’t lose out on a great deal because an item scans incorrectly. 8. If you’re hosting a holiday gathering, ask for help with meal preparation. This will help relieve some of
the financial burden. Contact everyone on your holiday guest list and see who can bring a dish to share. Guests traveling from out of town may not be able to bring perishable items, but they can grab some nonperishables on their way in. Make sure you coordinate who’s bringing what to avoid overlap. 9. Include a variety of meatless dishes, like my recipe for Penne Pasta With Pumpkin Sauce. You may have some of the ingredients on hand from Thanksgiving, or they may be on sale. Meatless meals are often cheaper and, as a bonus, generally healthier, too. 10. Help others. How about serving some homemade food or giving a grocery-store gift certificate to a family in need? This is the greatest investment you can make for your money during the holiday season. Happy holidays!
