My Little Corner This past weekend would have been the perfect time to have that “beam me up, Scotty” mode of travel in my back pocket! It’s funny how often that particular idea is in my head now that I’m seeking people to shoot the breeze with! My little red Escape burned up gas and miles this weekend as I tried to touch in on some of the events happening nearby. Friday night we took a breather and enjoyed a great meal and entertainment by Roddy Watt and Sippin’ Whiskey at the Twin Butte General Store. Saturday I managed to touch in on many of the events happening in the Crowsnest Pass around the Blairmore Centennial and local reunion. The photos at left show some of the activities that kids were able to enjoy Saturday afternoon in Blairmore. That evening my husband joined

me on a journey to the Great Canadian Barn Dance near Hill Spring. We had a great time and even hit the dance floor a few times when I was finished playing paparazzi. The majority of the guests were from out of area, and I can honestly say that locals are missing out on a lot of fun and a fantastic way to spend an evening or a weekend with your family. After a brief detour to Waterton Sunday morning, my daughter and I made our way to Fort Macleod to attend the Irish Rovers concert at The Empress Theatre. It was definitely a party! There were other events that I missed out on, such as the Alberta Team Roping Championships, the Elk River Swim, Drink, Fish Festival, the Ghostriders’ home opener and the Get 'er Done Jackpot barrel racing. Love Roast Beef? If you love roast beef, Granum School staff and students would like to invite you out for dinner. Hosts will serve drinks and fill your plate with roast beef, buns, mashed potatoes, carrots, turnips, caesar salad, gravy, and dessert. The annual harvest supper will be held Oct. 14 to raise money for things such as field trips, art projects and the hot lunch program not covered in the regular school budget. Granum School differs from others in the area because it utilizes multi-age grouping. Children of different ages and grades are intentionally placed together, graded distinctions are minimized, and both teaching and learning make use of the range of knowledge inherent in the group. The goal is for children to develop at their own pace without fear of failure. Tickets for the harvest supper can be purchased at the school office. Friends of the Library

Beef for Kids First The Fort Macleod curling rink was a bustling place Sept. 22. The final farmers market of the season was held in conjunction with the Family and Community Support Services annual resource fair. The all-in-one affair allowed people to shop with market vendors, register for sports and learn more about resources offered in the community. A highlight of the event was the Kids First draw for two sides of beef. This is a feel good story of taking a good turn and passing it on. TransAlta purchased a steer which

benefited the local 4-H club. The butchering and meat were then donated to Kids First, who were able to raise over $2,000 by selling raffle tickets for two sides of beef. Carmen Drapeau, dressed to promote Arts Days in Fort Macleod, assisted by Tina Williams and Susan Simpson, drew ticket stubs for Crystal Alm of Fort Macleod and Deb Josutter of Lethbridge as the lucky draw winners. Deb chose to pass on the beef as her freezer was full, and Harley Bastien became the recipient in her place.

Sparwood Public Library has many programs on the go! Computer Fun is offered for seniors from 1 to 3 p.m. and for youthages nine to 12. from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning Oct. 4. The Laptime program for babies and the Hop program for walkers are held Wednesdays, and Storytime is held Thursdays. Library Antics for six- to nine-year-old readers is held after school on Thursdays. Fort Macleod RCMP Centennial Library is hosting Armchair Travel on Oct. 6. Two authors will also visit this month. On Oct. 13 Valorie Allen will give a PowerPoint presentation related to her book, “Growing Pains: A Planet in Distress”, at 7 p.m. Collin James Wilson, author of “A Series of Losses,” will read from his book on Oct. 20, also at 7 p.m.
Fundraising for Paris Jaiden Panchyshyn of Pincher Creek is anxiously awaiting the arrival of November and her first trip overseas. Jaiden will be off to Paris with other students of the Wilson School of Highland Dance of Calgary and Saskatoon, to participate in the first ever International Gathering of Scottish Highland Dance at Disneyland Paris, Nov. 11 to 14. The group will be centre stage all four days and participate in performing arts workshops with Disney professionals. Jaiden began highland dancing five years ago in Saskatoon, Sask. Staying involved with this passion became more challenging when she moved to Pincher Creek in 2009. A dedicated student, Jaiden travels weekly to Calgary for lessons, and joins in additional classes via
Skype video calls. As a testament to the power of technology, last May Jaiden learned her part of a group choreography through Skype lessons. In July, she joined her former classmates from Saskatoon at the ScotDance national championships in Antigonish, N.S. where their rendition of 99 Red Balloons earned the group a gold medal. Traveling is one of Jaiden’s favourite aspects of dance. She has had the opportunity to attend competitions throughout Saskatchewan and Alberta, as well as in Las Vegas and Nova Scotia, and has a wall display of medals to show for her efforts. Jaiden performs at local functions on request, as well as for three days at FolkFest in Saskatoon and Globalfest in Calgary during the summer. Continued on page 5

The SHDA has teamed with Sobeys to assist with travel costs for the Paris trip through selling grocery cards. Sobeys Blairmore and Sobeys Pincher Creek, along with Robin & Co. Chartered Accountant of Pincher Creek, are supporting Jaiden on a local level by providing purchase locations for the cards. A beautiful thing about this type of fundraising is that there is no addition-
al cost involved for the donors. Nine per cent of card purchase amounts will go directly toward Jaiden’s travel expenses, while you spend the usual amount on your groceries. It’s as simple as purchasing a card before you start shopping in the amount you anticipate to spend. Cards will be available for purchase next week at Sobeys locations in Pincher Creek and Blairmore and at Robin & Co. Chartered Accountant in Pincher Creek and Coleman. Weston Supports Waterton Ecosystem Investigators Waterton Ecosystem Investigators Camp is an innovative three-day, overnight outdoor education camp based at Waterton Lakes National Park. During the camp, Grade 5 students learn about the ecological importance of whitebark pine and prairie fescue ecosystems and other issues facing the southern Alberta landscape. Collaborating with the local Kainai and Piikani First Nations, the camp engages urban, regional and local students, providing them with a connection to nature and moving them to take action. The camp is linked to the curricula of social studies, science, drama, health and life skills, physical education and art. As a donation during Parks Canada’s centennial year, the W. Garfield Weston Foundation has generously agreed to help fund the camp until
the fall of 2013. This grant, totalling $462,790, will be used for transportation, accommodation and meals for the students, teachers and chaperones. Parks Canada is working with the Nature Conservancy of Canada to include a visit to the Weston Family Conservation Centre, which is just north of Waterton Lakes National Park. Peter Kent, Canada’s environment minister and minister responsible for Parks Canada, expressed appreciation to the foundation for its support of the camp. “Canada’s future lies in the hands of its young people,” he said. “I am pleased the Government of Canada is able to work with the W. Garfield Weston Foundation to give youth this opportunity to learn about and experience a connection to our country’s treasured places.”
Director Camilla Dalglish spoke on behalf of the private Canadian family foundation, established in the 1950s. “Our foundation has supported environmental education initiatives for over 10 years and we are proud to see this work continue through the ESI camp, which encourages students to actively contribute to healthy ecosystems,” she said. “This is a wonderful complement to our foundation’s conservation of over 30,000 acres in Waterton park front, adjacent to this magnificent national park.” The founders believed that as funds are generated through the work and success of Canadian companies, grants should be given in Canada for the benefit of Canadians. The foundation directs most of its funds to projects in the fields of land conservation, education and science in Canada’s north.

Alberta Arts Days A provincial celebration of culture, heritage and artistic diversity known as Alberta Arts Days runs Sept. 30 to Oct 2. Ashley Furniture Grand Opening Chalmer and Val Steiger opened the doors of Ashley Fine Floors a few weeks ago, and held an official opening Sept. 23. With the same opening day as the Co-op Gas Bar, the businesses joined forces to provide lunch for 400 people. The strong winds didn’t keep anyone away as the lunch was a sell-out affair! Parking lot pony rides were an attraction for the younger set, and many
had been looking forward to their ride for days. The independent business is located in the Pincher Creek Ranchland Mall in premises shared with The Brick. Downhill Racers Break Dirt Diggler Speed Records By the time the dust settled over Fernie’s rugged Dirt Diggler mountain bike trail Sept. 19, the racers were still in one piece, but speed records for the downhill fall classic lay shattered. Luke Nelson of Fernie claimed his fifth men’s win in six years, blazing down the steep, 6.5-kilometre course in 11 minutes 12 seconds – and breaking the 11:59 record he set in 2010. Calgarian Kathleen McCormick’s 14:09 first-place finish set a new standard for the women, breaking the 14:58 record set last year by Dominique Doyon. Injuries knocked a couple of entrants out of the race just before it began. But, despite a few flat tires, everyone who braved the daunting 3,500-foot descent from the top of Morrissey Ridge finished safely. Conditions for the high-intensity race were “super dry, pretty fast – just gnarly,” said trail builder and race founder Derek Bird. “A few of the heavy hitters didn’t make it out this year,” he said, “but we had a good mix of returnees and a few newbies.” Dirt Diggler is clearly a course for skilled riders only – and that’s by design. Derek, who began developing the trail two years before the inaugural race in 2006, says he tried from the start “to mimic Psychosis, up in Golden.” During its legendary seven-year run on Golden’s Mount 7, Psychosis was billed as “the world’s most demented downhill mountain bike race.” Building and maintaining a highcalibre race trail is no minor challenge. Derek jokes that “it’s like raising a kid, with all the repercussions” that entails. The yearly payoff is the energy and excitement of the fall classic. After investing some 1,000 hours of work into Dirt Diggler, he says “it’s still hard to believe” how the trail and the race have progressed over the years. “It’s almost surreal.”
