The Crowsnest Conservation Society actively promotes the coexistence of people and nature through a variety of programs. BearSmart 101 was held at the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre on Sept. 15 with about 50 people attending. The program was sponsored by Devon Canada, Crowsnest Conservation Society, Fish and Wildlife, and the Frank Slide Interpretive Centre. A highlight for participants was the opportunity to practise bear spray use with inert spray cans. The Crowsnest Conservation Society BearSmart program has been chosen as one of 26 projects in the national Shell Fuelling Change program. The group currently sits first place in their category for votes, and appreciates the support coming their way from across the country. My Little Corner
What a hectic week! I felt somewhat like Bad Luck Schleprock of the Flintstones as we ran into a series of obstacles during production of the first issue of Shootin’ the Breeze. Amid the chaos, interruptions and technical issues we managed to have a few laughs and print a first issue that we are proud of. It was wonderful to receive supportive emails from strangers over the weekend letting us know that our efforts have been positively received and appreciated. A quick trip to Saskatchewan for a family affair on the weekend means that I’m still bleary-eyed and sleep deprived,
but also refreshed and eager to see what’s around the next corner. The number of people visiting the website at www.mountainsidenews.ca has also been a positive indication that we are on the right track. My apologies to those looking for the Sept. 19 online update! We’ve had some issues with the online paper reader and while sorting that out it made sense to look ahead to the Tuesday edition. From this point forward, the online updated papers will be posted on Mondays and Fridays as well as the print edition being posted on Wednesdays.

other fruits and berries will help keep bears away at this time of year when they are seeking high-calorie food. Pet dishes should be kept indoors, barbecues should be cleaned and stored properly, and birdseed should only be used in winter months. The Crowsnest Conservation Society offers programs to assist area residents in bear-proofing their yards, such as the loan of bear-resistant containers and the community apple roundup. Bear-resistant bins are loaned to residents experiencing bear problems. The bins are moved to bear hot spots as they occur in the community, eliminating bear access to household waste. A fall community apple roundup sees volunteers rid the community of fallen fruit in an effort to eliminate this attractant. An apple network also connects people who would like apples with those who have apples to give away or who are unable to keep up with picking the ripe fruit. Public education is offered through workshops such as BearSmart 101. No prerequisites were required, and no test was given. The 50 participants were of all ages, and left the workshop more aware of strategies to coexist with bears in the neighbourhood and more prepared for an unexpected encounter. Area residents are reminded to call Fish and Wildlife at 403-562-3289 if they are experiencing bear problems. $25,000 Vote for BearSmart
Crowsnest Pass BearSmart program manager Elizabeth Anderson encourages everyone to vote for BearSmart. Shell Canada is granting a total of $1 million per year to projects that improve and restore Canada’s environment in a new program called FuellingChange. Projects are divided into groups of land, air and water, and grant amounts range from $25,000 to $100,000. Each group included in the challenge received a $10,000 grant.
Being chosen as an environmental project for the challenge means that the CNP BearSmart program has already qualified for the initial $10,000. At stake now is an additional $15,000 in funding. Projects in the challenge are at the mercy of Canadians who take the time to support them through online voting. BearSmart has 25 challengers in the land category, and must finish in the top eight to receive the full $25,000. BearSmart is currently in first

Claresholm Fitness Challenge
Registration for the Claresholm community-wide fitness challenge is Saturday, Sept. 24 at the fire hall, from 1 to 3 p.m. The challenge is presented by the Claresholm Healthy Community Coalition in partnership with the Claresholm Fire Department, and was created to encourage community members to choose a more active lifestyle. Suitable for folks of all fitness levels, the goal is to increase active living opportunities and promote physical activity. Team captains and members will meet Saturday for the official kickoff of the six-week challenge. Teams have four members, and participation is open to everyone. A registration fee of $40 per team will be put toward prizes and a celebration party at the end of the challenge. Each team member can earn up to 10 points
per day, with the Claresholm Healthy Community Coalition keeping the tally. Team members will earn four points for a round of golf played with use of a cart. Five-point activities include recreational swimming, horseback riding, farm chores, playing active games with the kids, snow shoveling, housework and yard work. Six points can be earned for lifting weights or golfing without using a cart. Ten-point activities are brisk walking, jogging or running; lane swimming; working out with a cardio machine; biking at a heart-pumping rate; attending an exercise class; or playing sports such as basketball, hockey, or skating. Bonus points can be earned for healthy changes met weekly. Week one is water week, and participants can add five points to their weekly total if they drink eight cups of

water per day for the entire week. Week two is no alcohol week, with five points earned by participants who refrain from drinking alcohol all week. Week three is immunization week, and the extra points are applicable if your tetanus immunization is current. During family week, extra points are earned for participants who work out with a family member. Week five is a big challenge – no fast food week. Abstaining from fast food, including any deep fried items at home, is worth another five points. The final weekly bonus is called jock week. Five points are added to your weekly total for any workout worth 10 points or more. Teams may also enter the inches and pounds challenge, with total team weight and inches measured at the kick off and again at the celebration party.
