WELCOME INDYCAR FANS

elcome to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and to the NTT INDYCAR Series season finale. We are honored to again welcome the athletes, teams, sponsors, and valued guests as this season’s champion is crowned. Regardless of where you’re sitting or standing, you’ll feel the sense of anticipation and excitement for the adrenalin-infused racing.

Laguna Seca is fortunate to have abundant viewing areas. From the front grandstands where you can watch the green flag wave, to the hillside overlooking Turns 2 and 3, and to the Corkscrew, there are plenty of extraordinary vantage points to enjoy throughout the day. Plus, the open paddock lets you move freely, watch teams prepare their cars, and perhaps cross paths with the drivers.

The legend of Laguna dates back to 1957, and it celebrates two INDYCAR legends — the Andretti Hairpin and Rahal Straight — named for Mario and Bobby’s mastery of the circuit. Equally legendary is the renowned series of turns that are commonly known as The Corkscrew. And

fittingly, this weekend commemorates a special Laguna Seca moment: the 30th anniversary of Alex Zanardi’s last lap pass on Bryan Herta in the Corkscrew. Alex was a beloved motorsports icon and four-time Paralympic gold medalist, and you can read more about his journey inside this program.

A special thank you to INDYCAR for entrusting Laguna Seca with the allimportant season finale for both INDY NXT and INDYCAR. It’s a testament to our supportive fans and community for hosting the pivotal race weekend. Thank you also to Porsche for bringing its season finale of the Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West series.

We are thankful to have many passionate volunteers and fans who annually visit Laguna Seca. Our team shares your passion, and we are here to ensure your visit to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and the beautiful Central Coast is memorable.

Thank you,

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

“Idling” isn’t an option. With two years under their belt, the notfor-profit Friends of Laguna Seca has been at full throttle. For Friends of Laguna Seca Founding Board member and President Ross Merrill, the surface is barely being scratched as optimism spreads throughout Monterey and the racing community.

Friends hasn’t looked in the rearview mirror once. Many of the initial projects have been dedicated to health and safety, long deferred maintenance, and replacing aging infrastructure.

Improvements to essential facilities are always in progress, aimed at boosting the overall experience for guests to meet their growing needs and high expectations. These accomplishments are strengthening the park and race track’s foundation for years to come.

“There is no grass growing under our feet,” says Ross Merrill. “Our expert operations team is working diligently on various improvements facility wide while

BUILDING A LONG-TERM FUTURE

our marketing effort has brought forward new, meaningful partnerships with leading global sponsors in all categories. The Friends business plan is exceeding our initial expectations and the public response has been extremely positive. We are hitting our marks every day and are very excited about the bright future of this place as Friends continues to rebuild, revitalize and reinvent the Laguna Seca Recreation Area for the benefit of the community it serves.”

The list of capital improvements is lengthy. Essential projects that may be

invisible to the eye progressed in time for the 2026 racing season opener. Integral to protecting the race circuit, drainage upgrades were implemented around the Corkscrew to improve water flow and runoff management, helping protect the racing surface and improving track conditions caused by inclement weather.

Among the projects recently completed are:

• Complete refurbishment of the scoring trilon

• Entire drainage system was assessed,

The renewed Hospitality Pavilion provides ample hosting opportunities

rehabilitation work began to support the foundation of the park, and improvements have been installed

• Renovation of the garages and High Speed Hospitality suites

• Restoration to the Timing & Scoring building and upgrade to its communications system

• L andscaping refreshes parkwide is underway

On the heels of major renovation of the High Speed Hospitality Suites on pit lane came significant upgrades to the 20-yearold Hospitality Pavilion. Perched above Turn 1 with premier views of nearly the entire course, this signature building has been enhanced with exterior paint, wood trimmed walls and an open ceiling with exposed beams, an audio upgrade with speakers both inside and outside, television monitors for race viewing and conference level presentations, polished concrete floors, and improved viewing from the patio.

The past year has also seen new significant partnerships. Porsche Cars North America became the Official Car while also

opening an onsite Porsche Driving Center. Porsche and Laguna Seca have a long history, with Porsche hosting four Rennsport Reunions over the past 15 years and celebrating over 600 victories at the track.

More recently, the Ford Raptor was named the Official Truck of WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Ford’s most capable and performance-driven vehicles, including the Ford F-150 Raptor, Ford Ranger Raptor, and Ford Bronco Raptor are prominently featured across the raceway, showcasing Ford’s engineering and off-road heritage to fans and participants.

Laguna Seca evolves each year, but one thing remains evergreen — enthusiasts’ passion, enjoyment, and respect for this 2.238-mile international icon known as Laguna Seca.

BECOME A FRIEND OF LAGUNA SECA

As a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization, funds raised by Friends of Laguna Seca are reinvested into achieving its core mission of restoring, revitalizing and reinventing Laguna Seca, which was founded in 1957. Its all-volunteer board of directors are passionate about WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca and share a desire to keep this beautiful facility thriving for generations to come. Their vision extends beyond motorsport events. Laguna Seca’s location and amenities position it as an ideal community and cultural home to myriad outdoor activities, food and wine festivals, and educational events that attract diverse interests that positively benefit Monterey County residents and businesses.

THE DRIVING FORCE VOLUNTEERS

AND SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS

Volunteerism has been the driving force behind Laguna Seca even before its groundbreaking in 1957. Seven decades later, volunteers remain the steady backbone of every event held at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

It is a massive team effort to successfully stage and host international events each year, with some being held just weeks apart, comments Madison Hutchison, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna

Seca’s volunteer coordinator. “There are hundreds of people who contribute their time to the overall success of our events,” she says. “In addition to the passionate individual volunteers, there are 18 service organizations that provide additional organized support, with some having been involved for 40-plus years.”

Dedicated leaders with years of experience oversee eight committees comprised of volunteers and supported by service organizations.

INDY AUTONOMOUS CHALLENGE RACES AHEAD

History was made last year when eight university teams from the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) pushed the boundaries of artificial intelligence in motorsport at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. Kicking off the NTT INDYCAR SERIES weekend in Monterey, university research teams from around the world competed in a time-trial race with AI drivers piloting the IAC AV-24, the world’s fastest autonomous race car.

This year, the Indy Autonomous Challenge returns to Monterey with 10 university-affiliated teams and an expanded on-track format featuring multiple autonomous race cars and passing demonstrations. The event will showcase precision, speed, and high-speed decision-making, with autonomous race cars approaching lap times achieved by top human race car drivers on one of the most technically challenging road courses in the world.

“The NTT INDYCAR SERIES runs the world’s fastest race cars, and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca is among the most technically challenging road courses in the world,” said Paul Mitchell, CEO of the Indy Autonomous Challenge and its parent company Aidoptation BV. “Our university

research teams are stepping up to the challenge to advance the field of AI and autonomy by pushing vehicle dynamics to the absolute edge and laying down lap times that only the best human drivers can achieve.”

In 2025, PoliMOVE-MSU took first place with a best lap time of 1:29.792 at an average speed of 89.727 miles per hour. Purdue AI Racing finished second, separated from the winner by less than one second, while KAIST, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, took third.

“Driving autonomously on a road course is the ultimate challenge, especially at Laguna Seca with its 18-meter and 18-degree Corkscrew drop,” said Dr. Sergio Savaresi, PoliMOVE-MSU Team Principal. “Our team spent a lot of time in simulation to perfect the AI driver’s decision-making capabilities.

Off track, IAC will host its second annual AI & Automation Summit, bringing together approximately 100 select thought leaders from industry, academia, and government. The summit will focus on emerging Physical AI technologies and how research and development, industry commercialization, and public-private partnerships can scale globally in a way that is safe, secure, and impactful.

Every great innovation has the ability to improve. The Honda Prelude first arrived in 1978—our answer to a calling that all great cars should also move the driver emotionally. As a front-wheel-drive coupe with sporty, upscale dynamics, it redefined what a sports car could be for everyday roads. The vehicle favored feel over flash, but more importantly, perfectly embodied the joy of driving, a core Honda philosophy encompassing the connection between driver and car.

Joy is more than just an emotion—it’s an engineering target. One that Honda engineers kept top of mind when designing the new 2026 Prelude. By innovating a two-motor hybrid system paired with flowing, aerodynamic proportions and a wide stance with a low center of gravity, the vehicle has been fine-tuned for not just efficiency, but also performance—so much so that the driving experience has been likened to a glider soaring through the sky: graceful, fluid, and, above all, exhilarating.

Of all its new technologies, none better captures the spirit of the Prelude than Honda S+ Shift, which enhances how the vehicle drives by augmenting three of its drive modes. With a simple button push, S+ Shift maximizes the synchronization between driver input and vehicle response for a truly intuitive driving experience felt through the senses. This is more than mechanical excellence; it’s the next step in mechanical connection, where engineering meets instinct.

Building upon our legacy of innovation, everything built into the new Prelude was done so with intention: the smooth silhouette, the stable suspension, the special height-to-width ratio. Each feature we designed was done to elicit a feeling—a feeling we refer to as the “joy of driving,” the philosophy that feeds our most ambitious and innovative desires. Because at the end of the day, we only create what we believe drivers deserve. And that’s exactly what the Prelude was built for: an experience that stirs the soul.

ART IN MOTION

The NTT INDYCAR SERIES is the intersection of speed, motion, and emotion. Capturing its essence is a big challenge, but artist Bill Patterson expertly illustrates the event’s passion in this year’s poster art.

“I’ve been a lifelong fan of IndyCar racing,” Patterson confesses. “To have the opportunity to capture their raw power and speed into art is a true pleasure.”

Patterson, who has been associated with WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for more than 20 years, says it’s both exciting and daunting to work on the official poster.

“It is an important piece of work that is seen by people worldwide. And I need to pay particular attention to the teams and drivers to ensure they enjoy the finished work as much as I enjoy creating it.”

The artwork is available in the Raceway Store as a collectible 18” x 24” poster, and Patterson will also host a paddock exhibition featuring many of his pieces. Visitors can easily find his display, where he often creates live art throughout the day.

In addition to commissioned fine art, Patterson has raised more than $1.25 million by painting live at many charity events, such as the Austin Hatcher Foundation, National Guard Youth Foundation, United Way, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He is also a frequent guest at races and concours events across the country.

A WALK THROUGH TIME

Ever since the inaugural Indy 500 in 1911, IndyCars have been at the forefront of innovation. Many of the automotive world’s greatest advances have come from America’s sleek open-wheel race cars. Their unmatched performance is evident across demanding venues — from technical road courses such as Laguna Seca and Road America to unforgiving street circuits in Long Beach and St. Petersburg, to sustained high speeds at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

To showcase this evolution and

honor IndyCar’s impact on motorsports, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca presents a special exhibition of 33 cars celebrating the series’ history, legendary drivers, and defining moments in openwheel racing.

Highlights include: 1983 March — First IndyCar winner at Laguna Seca. 1985 March — Bobby Rahal winner; Rahal is Laguna Seca’s only four-time IndyCar winner. 2022 Dallara — Alex Palou car; two-time Laguna Seca winner in 2022 and 2025. 1996 Reynard — Driven by Alex

Zanardi during the 1996 season. This is not the exact car Zanardi drove to victory at Laguna Seca when he made the famous last-lap Corkscrew pass on Bryan Herta, but it is a matching 1996 season car and visually represents one of the most iconic moments in Laguna Seca and IndyCar history. The actual “Pass” car was gifted to Zanardi by Chip Ganassi in 2013.

WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca has had eight multiple IndyCar winners. This display showcases five of the eight winning cars.

Alex Palou 2022 Dallara
Colton Herta 2019 Dallara, representing the first year he won at Laguna Seca
Alex Zanardi 1996 Reynard
Patrick Carpentier 2003 Dallara
Bryan Herta 1998 Dallara
Bobby Rahal 1985 March

ALEX PALOU CONTINUED HIS DOMINATION OF LAGUNA SECA

There’s something about WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca that piques Alex Palou’s competitiveness. Whether it’s the pleasant weather or technical nature of the circuit, Laguna Seca remained his favorite track in 2025 with a dominate performance.

Driving the No. 10 DHL Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, Palou led a staggering 84 of the 95 lap race for the win. This was his second consecutive year starting from pole and his third win in the past four years in Monterey. Meanwhile, Brazil’s Caio Collet completed a two-race sweep of the INDY NXT by Firestone races.

“It’s been an awesome weekend, an awesome year, and today was something else,” Palou beamed during a post-race press conference. “It’s sure fun to be here, and it’s one of my favorite tracks for sure.”

The weekend began with high revving fun at the festive street party in downtown Monterey where fans lined up for photos and autographs with Arrow McLaren drivers Nolan Siegel and Christian Lundgaard.

From there it was all business for the drivers, but it was pure exhilaration for the fans.

The paddock, hillsides and promenade were bustling with pre-race activities as fans dispersed throughout Laguna Seca. From the popular fan walks on pit lane, to live music and myriad exhibitors, the Java House Grand Prix of Monterey race weekend was an overwhelmingly popular sensory experience.

MONTEREY MEMORIES

INDYCAR AT LAGUNA SECA

Next to Turn 1 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Corkscrew might be the most famous and photographed corner in the NTT INDYCAR Series.

Indy cars first raced at Laguna Seca in 1983, and only Indianapolis Motor Speedway (1911), Milwaukee Mile (1937), Phoenix Raceway (1979), Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (1980), and Road America (1982) have held and continue to host earlier races.

This year also marks the 11th time Laguna Seca has hosted the series finale. While the teams enjoy the racing circuit, they also join sponsors, journalists and guests who value the surrounding community.

THE PASS SEEN ‘ROUND THE WORLD

Nearly 30 years ago to the day, one of the most remarkable and daring moves in IndyCar history occurred in a blink of the eye at Laguna Seca. On Sunday, September 8, 1996 before full grandstands at the Bank of America 300 IndyCar season finale, one singular move stunned fans, and then echoed throughout the racing community to become known simply as “The Pass.”

It’s the final lap of the last CART race of the year. The white flag was up, and the checkered flag was about to be waved. Bryan Herta was in the lead, holding off the dogged pursuit of Alex Zanardi.

But what was about to happen was so daring that even the race announcers couldn’t believe what had happened. So, let’s “listen” to the last lap commentary

ALEX ZANARDI

from Paul Page and Danny Sullivan who were calling the live action for ESPN.

“Look how close this is. Boy I’ll tell ya, Bryan Herta’s heart is pumping right now like you wouldn’t believe. Well, the pressure is on…coming to the conclusion of the 82nd lap. They climb the hill. The white flag flies, there is one more lap to go in the IndyCar season. Can Bryan Herta hang on for that lap.

Well, remember one thing too, Zanardi’s got to get right behind him and then he’s gotta find a way past him. He’s got to be able to pass him. Bryan can’t afford to make any mistakes here.

Zanardi is there. He can strike.

Jimmy Vasser is in a position that is almost unassailable in the championship right now. He will come home, a first championship for Jimmy

Vasser. Bryan Herta, United States, Jimmy Vasser United States. Two new names, both from the U.S. in a series that has become so international. So, the battle for the PPG Cup...

Oh look right there…here he comes, here he comes! And he gets him! Can he get him back? Can he hang on?

Oh, look at this. He went up the inside. Down the hill the final lap. Alex Zanardi… remember twice we’ve had the change on the final lap of the race this year. Alex Zanardi at the top of the hill an area you would not normally try and pass.

The inside of Bryan Herta…goes all the way off the course on the right-hand side, and Alex Zanardi with a brilliant move takes the checkered flag from the pole and the win here at Laguna Seca.

Unbelievable.”

“To compete in the 2015 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps will definitely be the next highlight in my career, I have been dreaming of racing in an endurance classic like this for a long time”

ALEX ZANARDI

THE PASSION OF A RACER

A CONVERSATION WITH KERRY MORSE . PHOTOGRAPHY BY LISTER

For the many who knew Alex Zanardi, both inside and outside of the racing community, his recent passing generated countless memories of a man who believed there were no limits to what he could accomplish. He never manufactured emotions or words for PR purposes, and his positive outlook on life was infectious. I had the good fortune to interview Alex several times over the years, and it seemed appropriate for me to look back at a conversation we had by phone in the fall of 2008, during his time as a BMW factory driver.

Alessandro Zanardi was THE Indy Car

driver in the latter part of the ‘90s. He not only thrilled fans with his fearless driving style, but off the track his charisma and friendliness lit up the scene and made him one of the favorite faces in the sport.

Alex was the real deal. He showed the promise of greatness ahead as he worked his way from karting to Formula 3 and then F3000, cycled through a mixed bag of underfunded F1 teams, and then finally finding a home and his professional peak in the CART series where he dominated. This earned him a return to F1 with Williams, but that stint had its problems and Alex returned to CART. While leading the CART

race at the EuroSpeedway in Germany, Alex suffered a horrific accident that many thought had claimed his life. It did not – and that very narrowest of escapes perhaps can be viewed as a clue to the way Alex lived life thereafter. Despite losing both legs in the accident, Alex seemed to treat it as an inconvenience, not a lifechanging trauma, and it took him only a few years before he was again twisting the wheel of a race car in competition.

Alex did and after five years as a factory BMW driver hustling around the world as part of World Touring Car Championship, he remains as always, a positive force.

The Roal team already had experience racing with Zanardi when tasked with running the modified BMW Z4 GT3 for BMW Motorsport at the Spa 24

Kerry Morse: How are things at home in Padova?

Alex Zanardi: Things are good here, thank you for asking. But [laughing] I wished I had a better result at the last race in Imola.

Of course you do! It’s a shame that the FIA WTCC doesn’t make an appearance in the U.S., because to me that’s what NASCAR really should be. Real production cars that are modified with trick parts and not fiberglass, tubeframe, nine-inch rear-end specials. Yes, but from the driver’s point of view I would prefer to drive something more powerful, although you couldn’t then directly buy that from your dealer.

Well, that probably stems from your roots of being mostly a single-seater and you certainly couldn’t go down to the local Fiat dealer and buy that. Build it, yes!

You know, that’s what I’ve been doing all my life [laughs]. Certainly, what I’m doing right now is dramatically different. Not less enjoyable actually, it’s different.

Different game with different rules, and if you believe you’re good enough to win races, you’re going to be good enough to do it on every level. Not where you just like it the most. Nevertheless, still to this day I have to torture myself a little bit, because the driving style you need for these type of cars is quite different from the ones I developed and drove. The days where I had 1,000 horsepower behind my back.

Your career has basically been in singleseaters, and the options of returning to open-wheel cars is quite limited, so the offer to jump into touring cars seems timely. How much of a transition was it from being a driver of single-seaters to a sedan? A modified one, granted, it is a race car but in a production shell.

After I had my accident, it was less than one year where my thoughts were not solely on racing. Although, I was out there every day. Would you ever go back into a race car? Mentally I knew I could do it, but technically I didn’t know if I was going to be able to operate the pedals, to do things the way you’re supposed to. I knew along the way that it would come the day I would be curious to find out. But that was not my priority, because my priority was actually to regain my normal life, regain my anatomy, to do things on my own, to once more be the owner of my life and not be the passenger of my life. Then one night it was pure coincidence that an old friend of mine who is a technical director of the team I’m driving for, and he was kind of kidding when he said, we’ve got a spare

“ WOULD YOU EVER GO BACK INTO A RACE CAR? MENTALLY I KNEW I COULD DO IT ”
For Spa, the Z4 GT3 had a very thin brake pedal added to the pedal box and a pin was inserted into Zanardi’s prosthetic leg. The steering wheel used a ring for accelerating and gear changes used shift paddles on steering wheel with clutch paddles handling the clutch-by-wire system.

car, would you be interested in driving it. And my answer was immediately OK, of course I would. And that was it. He went back to Podova and said that Alex would be interested to test our car, They were all pretty excited about it. That’s the way that happened. After the first test, BMW Italy got excited as well, and they took it a little further and gave me the opportunity to drive the last race in Monza, ironically at home in Italy, the last race of the championship. One thing came to another, then they did that race and offered me to do the entire championship. So, I was not really looking at this series to be the ideal platform for me to land and restart my racing career. It happened. And since I’m here I’m enjoying what I’m doing and have discovered something that is very enjoyable and very intense racing, just a different way. It would be like saying, do you prefer lasagna or do you prefer ice cream?” I like both.

I’m more of a tortellini man. (laughs) OK, tortellini and ice cream. You would like to have both. I enjoy what I’m doing: touring cars. Yes, I totally miss the

day when I was driving single seaters. I believe overall that this is more difficult to develop the correct driving style. But eventually, if this is what you’ve been doing all your life, this is what you would call instinctive. For me to drive a touring car sometimes I have to sort of torture myself because my driving style is very smooth and to let the car lean into the corner carrying a lot of speed which is the typical way to take advantage of the downforce. You kind of cuddle the car into the corner, take the tires to the limit, nevertheless if you take the car into the corner a little bit faster you generate more downforce, therefore you manage to go around the turn. At certain times I’m still trying to use that technique. In touring cars, of course, we have no downforce at all with the result of me losing my line and having to slow down in order to not end up in the grass. Still for me it’s quite harder to drive the car the way the car needs to be driven. On top of everything, I had to build and generate everything because there was no experience, no previous feedback in which we could rely on. Build my own controls, and that was quite difficult, because when

you jump in the car you take for granted everything being in the right place and you can operate that car very naturally. They didn’t know where to put the gearstick, the throttle pedal, or the brake, so the car felt a little funny. So, I helped.

When you were originally working on the development of the hand controls, all that work was done in the workshop in Italy, by the BMW team? It had to be. It was consistent development. One day I would show up to the shop and they would say, “What do you need?” And I would say, “A man with no legs, of course. I would need to do everything with my hands.” I had to pull the brake lever with my finger, hit the throttle with my thumb, use the right hand to downshift and to operate the clutch, and with my palm control the steering. That was definitely too much. So, that’s when I said let me use my prosthetic leg to press the brake pedal, and they said, “No, it’s impossible.” But, I’m a pretty unstoppable guy, so I went to the local grocery store and bought a scale to use, and I brought that back to the shop and put it against the wall and took my engineer

Zanardi: “We transferred everything we had developed for the BMW 320i to the BMW Z4 GT3 in addition to some additional clever engineering. It all worked perfectly.”

and said, “Look, try to push on that thing.” And it was more or less 180 pounds. And it was my turn, and once I got into position I was able to press over 200 pounds. Actually, it went up to 220. That’s normal, you know? It’s not because you have three joints like heel, knee, and hip, you divide the force you generate by three. You’ve got that force in every single section of your leg. I know for sure that I cannot react the same amount as normally you could with all the right equipment that mother nature gave me in the first place, but I believe I can generate enough pressure to push that brake pedal. We went from there to design a special pedal that would fit my foot, and basically this is the way I’ve been using the car since. I keep my prosthetic leg at a certain angle, and when it’s time to brake I just push down with my hip, and via my prosthetic leg I put pressure down on the brake pedal. The difficult thing was to pick up the sensitivity it takes to formulate correctly the brake pedal, because that’s the real part of being a driver that you have to master. Not because I’m special, but I am specially needed in the sense that being a handicapped person, I have developed hidden talents that we all

have, but we normally don’t need. So, this is why I can do things that a normal individual couldn’t. If one were to jump in my car, they would come out screaming it’s impossible and nobody can do it.

Do you feel that what you’ve developed along with your team can also be used in a commercial application? It has potential for sure. If somebody has similar problems such as mine, and wants to try, thanks to what we’ve done they wouldn’t start from zero. But to say that the exact identical controls would work for them I could not guarantee that. Basically, you’ve lost some talents, but you’ve gained some others.

You’ve revealed your mental abilities right there by that statement. One, you certainly didn’t give up, and two, you’re still very competitive. Just the mental toughness alone, that’s one aspect that not only continued but you were able to build upon.

Thank you for putting it that way. I don’t think I can take that compliment without adding that I don’t really believe that I

would call that determination, because in reality I had a lot of fun doing it. When you have fun doing something, you don’t have to sacrifice to do it. You cannot call it commitment, or dedication, anything different. It was good to do it, so why not? It’s as simple as that. There were times where I got to doubt a little that we could efficiently reach exactly what I thought we could. But the reality very often was the answer was right around the corner, and once we got it under our belt, we got an injection of new confidence.

When was the last time that you were in the U.S.? I was in America last Christmas.

You are still very popular with motorsport fans in the U.S. Last year BMW shipped over a WTCC car for the SEMA show in Las Vegas, and it had your name all over it. I suppose it was a show car, but the point is your name has a strong attraction. I was there; it really was my car with the controls removed. The people were supportive, and it was fun to be part of it.

“ WHEN YOU HAVE FUN DOING SOMETHING, YOU DON’T HAVE TO SACRIFICE TO DO IT ”

Are you signed up with Team BMW Italy to run next year also? Doing another season in the WTCC?

Theoretically, yes. I say theoretically because right now, unfortunately, there is a little bit of controversy going on between the constructors in terms of writing the rules for next year’s championship. The point is, it’s quite a difficult task for the FIA to write some technical rules that make everybody happy. When you have cars that were designed to be driven on the road and transform that into a race car, it’s very understandable. I think the BMW, which costs 45,000 Euros, has a quality that translates into performance as well as when you turn it into a race car. When you take a SEAT, which goes for 15,000, you cannot expect the same type of quality, the same type of performance, out of the car. So, if you want to have these different manufacturers compete with each other, you have to be prepared to have flexible rules. But sometimes with that type of flexibility you often create inequity which affects the racing, the series and

everybody’s view. And right now we are facing the big problem with the diesel, which in BMW’s mind is utilizing the advantage of having too much boost, being too big, and so on. BMW has built a diesel car, and out of the box it was immediately a second a lap faster than the gas car. So, of course, they had the option to say, OK, we can go with that and forget about the gas car. But, they didn’t want to do that, one because they don’t believe the appeal that the diesel engine may have on race fans because it’s very quiet, and it doesn’t immediately talk racing, and second for BMW they have sold more than 50 touring cars around the world for national championships. If they would accept those new set of rules, and go for a new car with diesel power, that would mean that the gas cars would immediately become obsolete.

So, basically BMW is protecting the customer base.

Exactly. So, what they are asking is the FIA to write new rules that would keep the diesel competitive so it would still be

a choice for manufacturers to pursue. But, it would not be a mandatory choice if you want to win. This is basically what is happening right now. We’ve been under the impression all year long that SEAT kept the performance of their car lower than what they really could have, not to impress too much. To use it just when it’s needed. And now that we’re getting near the end of the championship, their car is just a rocket. That kind of proved the BMW theory. We’ve got a little bit of fog on the issue right now, but I am confident that they will find an agreement. I already have an existing deal with BMW Italy and Team BMW Italy-Spain.

Do you still find the time to follow other forms of Motorsport?

Oh, yeah. Never forget that before I’m a driver, I’m a race fan. I was just very, very lucky in my life to be able to turn this into a profession. I love motor racing and for sure every time I switch a TV on, if there is a race, I watch it.

Thanks, Alex, great to talk to you again. Anytime.

FIRESTONE: 125TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION & THE INDYCAR 2026 SEASON FINALE

Both the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and INDY NXT by Firestone will crown their respective champions this weekend at the INDYCAR Grand Prix of Monterey. The conclusion of a thrilling INDYCAR season also marks the end of the year-long celebration of the Firestone brand’s 125th anniversary, commemorating the founding of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio, in August 1900.

FIRESTONE RACING LEGACY

Following the debut of its all-rubber non-skid tire in 1908, Firestone quickly established itself on the track. In August 1909, Barney Oldfield won a 300-mile race at the newly opened Indianapolis Motor Speedway driving on Firestone tires.

The brand’s racing heritage was further solidified in 1911 with victory in the inaugural Indianapolis 500®, where Ray Harroun piloted the Firestone-equipped Marmon Wasp. Firestone Racing’s success at the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” continued in 2026 with its 77th Indianapolis 500 win, captured by Felix Rosenqvist in the No. 60 Meyer Shank Racing car.

Firestone earned its first Laguna Seca win in 1996 with Alex Zanardi, who famously made “The Pass” on Bryan Herta in the Corkscrew on the final lap of the season finale. Both Firestone and Bridgestone race tires have equipped the winning cars of all 16 INDYCAR races held since then.

Today, Firestone proudly serves as the

exclusive tire supplier of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, a role it has held for more than a quarter century.

NTT INDYCAR SERIES & INDY NXT BY FIRESTONE

This season, the Firestone Race Tire Engineering (RTE) team, along with nearly 60 expert tire builders, designed, developed, and delivered approximately 37,000 Firehawk race tires for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and its INDY NXT by Firestone development series.

More than 32,000 race tires were provided to the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, spanning 60 different specifications to meet the diverse demands of oval, road, and street course configurations across the schedule.

Firestone’s involvement in INDYCAR’s premier driver development series, INDY NXT by Firestone, dates to the early 1990s. The brand rejoined the series in 2023 as presenting sponsor and exclusive tire supplier following a nearly decade-long hiatus. In 2026, more than 5,000 tires across 16 specifications supported the next generation of drivers, providing valuable development experience on a competitive platform closely aligned with the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

DRIVING INNOVATION WITH ENLITEN™

The 2026 season began with the introduction of Firestone Firehawk race tires featuring the integration of

Bridgestone global ENLITEN Technology.

ENLITEN is a next-generation technology designed to deliver customized and uncompromised tire performance while promoting a focus on enhanced sustainability for tires in Bridgestone and its Firestone brand portfolio. This includes consumer products, such as the new Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 V2, as well as commercial, agricultural, and race tires. Motorsport continues to serve as a critical proving ground for advanced materials and technologies that can influence future tire development beyond the racetrack.

Firestone Firehawk primary and alternate street and road course race tires incorporate key components of Bridgestone’s ENLITEN Technology, including renewable soybean oil to replace petroleum-based oils traditionally used in tire compounds, as well as recycled bead wire and recycled carbon black. Together, these materials underscore an approach focused on lower CO2 emissions, improved resource efficiency and increased material circularity, while delivering the extreme performance demanded by North America’s premier open-wheel racing series.

Efforts are also ongoing to advance endof-life recycling initiatives for race tires used throughout the season.

DRIVING INNOVATION

FROM CIRCUIT TO STREET

Firestone Firehawk race tires feature an ENLITEN symbol on the sidewall and are produced at the Bridgestone Advanced Tire Production Center (ATPC) in Akron,

Ohio. Opened in 2022, the ATPC marked the start of a new chapter for Firestone’s rich history in the community where it was founded in 1900.

The Firestone RTE team collaborates closely with fellow tire engineers and innovation colleagues at the nearby Bridgestone Americas Technology Center, where insights gained on track help enhance product development across the Bridgestone and Firestone tire portfolio for the road.

FIRESTONE FAN EXPERIENCE

Fans attending the INDYCAR Grand Prix of Monterey are invited to visit the Firestone Fan Experience, an interactive fan zone offering hands-on activities designed to engage fans of all ages. Located in the midway fan village at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, the Firestone Fan Experience features racing simulators, a Firestone showcar, Firestone-branded giveaways, and a chance to win a set of Firestone tires.

ANATOMY OF A PIT STOP

INDYCAR drivers fight for every inch of space on a competitor while on the track. For the talented team members on pit lane, their success is measured in milliseconds to get their driver safely out of the pits to re-engage on track. It’s a total team effort that relies on one another.

PIT STOP FAST FACTS

7 CREW

Only seven crew members (four tire changers, fueler, airjack operator and an aeroscreen assistant) are allowed over the wall during a pit stop.

FIRE

Crew members actively participating in a pit stop are required to wear firesuits, fire-resistant footwear, fire-resistant gloves, Nomex underwear and helmets.

-10 SECONDS

During a typical pit stop, the crew will change four Firestone tires, add 18.5 gallons of Shell 100% Renewable Race Fuel and make wing adjustments in less than 10 seconds.

THE PIT STOP TEAM

OUTSIDE REAR TIRE CHANGER

Unlike the other tire changers, this crew member must wait by the wall with air gun in hand. When the car pulls in, the tire changer runs around to the rear of the car, changes tire and helps push car out of pit.

AIRJACK

Inserts airjack nozzle into airjack receptacle, which raises car for tire change.

REAR TIRE ASSISTANT

Helps pass the tires over the wall and assists wherever he is needed. Not part of over-the-wall crew.

INSIDE REAR TIRE CHANGER

Like the inside front tire changer, is in position on the lap before the pit stop. After changing the tire, helps push car out of the pit.

FUELER

Fits fuel nozzle into tank opening on the side of the car, allowing fuel to flow into car and capturing any fumes or excess fuel.

OUTSIDE FRONT TIRE CHANGER

Typically the chief mechanic, guides driver into pit stall and signals driver to stop on a mark. After changing tire, makes any necessary frontwing adjustments. Usually is responsible for signaling driver to leave pit.

AEROSCREEN

ASSISTANT

Stays on pit wall until car is jacked. Allowed over the wall to service the aeroscreen by pulling a tearoff.

DEADMAN/FUEL HOSE ASSISTANT

Operates spring-loaded lever on fuel tank that allows fuel to flow through the hose into the car. Called the “Deadman” because if a fuel problem occurs, he can stop the flow of ethanol by releasing the lever. Also helps fueler balance fuel hose, keeping it level to ensure the quickest fuel flow to the car. Not part of the over-the-wall crew.

STOP SIGN/ FRONT AIR HOSE

Waves stop sign up and down to signal driver to pit. As car enters pit stall, lowers stop sign to mark the optimum stopping location. Assists outside front tire changer by clearing wheel gun and air hose to prevent driver from running over it while exiting the pit.

FRONT TIRE

ASSISTANT

Helps pass the tires over the wall and assists wherever he is needed. Not part of over-the-wall crew.

INSIDE FRONT TIRE CHANGER

Usually one of the mechanics, the tire changer takes the tire and air gun over the wall one lap before the pit stop and is on his knees when the car arrives at pit lane speed. Removes old tire and replaces with new Firestone tire in six to eight seconds. Assists with front wing adjustments.

Other Key Players

Data Acquisition Engineer Maintains the data acquisition system, ensures all sensors are calibrated and well-functioning, and analyzes data. Located on the pit box.

Race Strategist Calls race and pit strategy for the team. Communicates with the driver via radio during the race. Located on the pit box.

Race Engineer Oversees the running of the car, including what to adjust during pit stops to maximize performance. Located on the pit box.

Spotter The spotter is the driver’s eyes in the sky and the voice that guides around the race track. Positioned above the race track, the spotter communicates with the driver via radio to inform of on-track incidents, opportunities to pass and more. Typically located on the roof of the Hospitality Pavilion.

FROM INSIDE THE BOOTH...

TOWNSEND BELL

You’ve successfully transitioned from the race car to the broadcast booth. What are the similarities in your preparation?

Preparation is everything in both roles. As a driver, you’re studying data, onboard video, track conditions, and constantly thinking about how to extract that last tenth of a second. In the booth, it’s not that different—you’re still studying drivers, teams, strategies, and trends. The biggest overlap is mental readiness. You have to try to anticipate what’s coming… before it happens. Whether you’re behind the wheel or behind the mic, the goal is the same: be sharp, be informed, and be ready to react in real time. That kind of intensity can be addictive… just like driving!

Each race circuit has its own peculiarities. What unique challenges do INDYCAR drivers face at Laguna Seca?

Laguna Seca is one of those tracks that demands total commitment. It’s narrow, there’s very little margin for error, and the elevation changes are dramatic. The Corkscrew gets all the attention—and rightfully so—but what really defines Laguna is how technical it is from start to finish. For me, Turn 6 is the most difficult corner on the track: fast, unforgiving, and tough to be consistently on your marks. Tire management is also huge at Laguna,

especially with the surface aging and getting slick. And passing? It’s tough. You have to be decisive and set it up a few corners in advance. It’s a driver’s track in every sense.

You’ve raced in some of the biggest motorsport events in the world. What are several of the most memorable races and what were you driving?

The Indianapolis 500 is always at the top of that list. There’s nothing quite like it— the scale, the pressure, the history. I had some great runs there in machinery that I’ll never forget. Le Mans is another one— completely different challenge, racing in a 24-hour race where patience and precision matter just as much as outright speed.

Winning at LeMans, in a Ferrari, was special. But my Indy Lights win at Laguna Seca was also a great moment. Home track for me, and we sealed up the 2001 Indy Lights Championship with that win…before the season was over. It was a dominant performance and that moment really propelled me into the big leagues.

For you personally, road courses or ovals, and why?

Candidly, I can’t pick one—they’re both great for very different reasons.

Ovals are incredibly pure. The speed, the rhythm, the precision—it’s all amplified. You’re dancing right on the edge for

extended periods of time, and that takes a unique kind of focus and bravery. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of committing to a corner at that level, lap after lap.

On the flip side, road courses bring a completely different kind of challenge. They’re dynamic—constantly changing with elevation, surface grip, and braking zones. You’re dealing with bumps, riding curbs, and really living on the limit under threshold braking. It’s a more technical, hands-on style of driving where you’re managing a lot more inputs corner to corner. That contrast is what makes INDYCAR so special—you have to be excellent at both.

What have you learned about INDYCAR from your current vantage point that you wish you had known when you were in the cockpit?

Perspective. When you’re driving, your world is very focused—your car, your team, your race. From the booth, you see the entire chessboard. You understand how strategy unfolds across the field, how small decisions compound over a race, and how teams adapt in real time. I think if I had that broader awareness as a driver, it would have helped me anticipate situations better and maybe think a step or two further ahead. It’s a reminder that racing isn’t just about speed—it’s about thinking strategically under pressure—a good lesson for life!

CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

This weekend at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca serves as the finale of the 2026 Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West by Yokohama season, where championship battles come to a head and champions will be crowned.

Porsche Sprint Challenge USA West by Yokohama, sanctioned by the United States Auto Club (USAC) and supported by Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA), brings together drivers, teams, and cars that represent the heart of Porsche customer racing. Now in its fifth anniversary season, the championship has become a key part of the West Coast motorsport scene, delivering professional-level competition with close racing and open access for fans.

At its core, the series is built on equal machinery and driver skill. Competitors race purpose-built Porsche race cars, including the 911 GT3 Cup (Type 992.1) and 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport. With identical performance in each class, results are determined by talent, preparation, and race craft.

The series attracts a wide range of drivers, from those taking their first steps into racing to experienced competitors sharpening their skills. Many of the most established Porsche teams in North America compete here, reinforcing the strength of West Coast racing while benefiting from a geographically focused calendar at iconic circuits.

Fans attending the autograph session will receive a complimentary commemorative poster, created exclusively for the anniversary by world-renowned motorsports artist Chris Rathbone. Known for his dynamic racing artwork, Rathbone captures the spirit and energy of Porsche competition while incorporating the distinctive Yokohama ADVAN branding as an ode to the series’ presenting partner and official tire. Drivers will be on hand to sign posters, making it a memorable keepsake from the weekend.
