WELCOME TO SPEED READ

The motorsport season is in full swing, with competitors and clubs ready for a busy year ahead and fans ready to enjoy some of the best motorsport in the world.

Since joining Motorsport Australia, I have witnessed firsthand the passion and dedication of the motorsport community around the country. This has strengthened my resolve to build on the great work of our volunteers, officials, competitors and Motorsport Australia.

This month we prepare for one of the busiest and most high-profile periods of the year.

Australia has already hosted its designated International Enduro, the Meguiar’s Bathurst 12 Hour, while the Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship and the Australian Rally Championship season openers are several weeks away. The Supercars Championship heads to Sydney Motorsport Park this weekend for Round 1 and the country’s largest event on offer, the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026 will welcome hundreds of thousands of fans to Melbourne’s Albert Park in early March.

Making each and every one of those events happen, are over 12,500 Motorsport Australia officials.

Earlier this year the Motorsport Australia Appointed Officials Seminar at Motorsport Australia House provided an excellent opportunity for officials to learn from each other through educational presentations, peer discussions, networking, simulations and self-reflection. I had the opportunity to speak to the room about the impact our officials have on our sport and thanked them for the crucial role they play in making our sport run safely and smoothly, setting the benchmark for motorsport in Australia.

I extend congratulations to Motorsport Australia officials Jennifer Campbell and Kaye Callander for their respective appointments as Race Directors for the Toyota GR Cup and Mustang Cup Australia.

Across the country, State Awards nights have provided a wonderful opportunity to recognise

the achievements and contributions of our community. From New South Wales and the ACT Awards night, of which I was grateful to attend in-person, through to other awards ceremonies in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia/Northern Territory and Tasmania, these evenings have celebrated the people who keep motorsport thriving at every level. I congratulate all award recipients for their achievements throughout the past year.

Our attention now turns to the Motorsport Australia National Awards Gala on 22 February in Sydney, where we will bring together the very best of our sport to celebrate excellence on a national stage. The evening is an important occasion to acknowledge outstanding performances, service and commitment across all parts of the sport, and the entire motorsport community.

Australia’s top motorsport officials from around the country gathered at Motorsport Australia House in Melbourne, conducting final preparations ahead of what will be a busy year.

" IT WAS FANTASTIC TO HAVE OUR SENIOR OFFICIALS TOGETHER AHEAD OF WHAT PROMISES TO BE A LIVELY 2026 SEASON,"

WHAT IS SCRUTINEERING?

Scrutineering is one of the most crucial roles that Motorsport Australia’s officials play, ensuring vehicles comply with the regulations set by Motorsport Australia in administering safe, fair and fun participation.

Vehicles, including those used for parades and demonstrations may be checked prior to going onto the track. Scrutineers have a wide range of responsibilities on maintaining safe and fair competition standards.

Scrutineers will often examine competition vehicles and competitors’ racing attire for compliance with categoryspecific technical regulations during an event.

They will also monitor and respond to requests for advice on matters of vehicle safety from Race Control, Stewards, Secretary of Event or Category Technical Delegates.

Scrutineers inspect and provide written reports and advice on vehicles involved in accidents, including advice on whether vehicles and racing attire is suitable to resume competition activity.

As instructed in all of their duties by the Chief Scrutineer, scrutineers will also ensure technical equipment and measures are accurate and used correctly.

As a key part of the Motorsport Australia officials’ structure, scrutineers have a broad repertoire of personal attributes.

As well as having a solid understanding of rules, regulations, technical and category specific regulations, scrutineers also have good communication, good teamwork acumen, observation skills and an ability to follow instructions.

To become a scrutineer official, individuals begin with getting a Motorsport Australia General Officials licence and build experience as a General Official - the starting point and minimum requirement for every new official.

From there, an official can earn Bronze accreditation in the scrutineer discipline, allowing them to lead state-level events. A scrutineer may then progress to Silver accreditation, which qualifies them to act as Chief Scrutineer at national-level events. The final step is Gold accreditation, enabling them to serve as Chief Scrutineer at international-level events.

KAYE CALLANDER APPOINTED INAUGURAL MOTORCRAFT MUSTANG CUP AUSTRALIA RACE DIRECTOR

Experienced motorsport official Kaye Callander will fulfil the role of Race Director for the inaugural Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia season, starting at Phillip Island in March.

The appointment will be Callander’s first as a Race Director – a culmination of 30 years in the sport – starting as a volunteer marshal that has led her to being the person to oversee the safe and fair running of the Mustang Cup.

Callander started her motorsport journey more than 30 years ago, beginning as a trackside flag marshal before rising through the ranks to become Assistant Clerk of Course at the Australian Grand Prix.

In addition to these experiences, Callander has fulfilled the roles of communications chief, emergency coordinator, Assistant Clerk of Course, Deputy Clerk of Course, Clerk of Course, Assistant Race Director and now Race Director.

Callander was humbled to be appointed the first Race Director for Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia.

“I’ve been exposed to the Race Director role by being the Deputy Race Director for GT World Challenge Australia for the last couple of years, which has been great. Learning from James Taylor and Craig Baird has been an awesome experience, plus they’ve been great mentors to me,” Callander stated.

“I’m pretty excited for the Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia and it’s going to be really enjoyable to fulfil the role as Race Director.”

While her appointment to the Race Director role is a first, Callander will need no introduction to her

Motorsport Australia colleagues and competitors within the Shannons SpeedSeries events –the home of all six Mustang Cup rounds.

Callander has worked as the Deputy Race Director for GT World Challenge Australia in recent years, and also became the first female to be a Deputy Race Director at a Supercars event at Hidden Valley Raceway last year.

Motorsport Australia General Manager of Motorsport Operations added Callander’s appointment as Race Director for the Mustang Cup reflects her exceptional track record and deep commitment to motorsport operations after more than three decades in various officiating roles.

“Kaye’s journey from a flag marshal to senior event command demonstrates the value of her dedication, professionalism and passion at all levels of the sport,” Stuart said.

“Having someone of Kaye’s calibre lead such an exciting new category underscores Motorsport Australia’s commitment to the training and development of officials and provides new categories every chance at success going forward.”

Callander’s lead role from Race Control will see her work closely with Mustang Cup’s Driver Standards Observer Craig Baird, plus Motorsport Australia’s administrational team to oversee the inaugural season.

The opening round of the maiden Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia will commence as part of the opening Shannons SpeedSeries event at Phillip Island on March 27-29.

MOTORSPORT FIGURES HONOURED WITH AUSTRALIA DAY RECOGNITIONS

LEGENDARY DRIVER JIM RICHARDS, MOTORSPORT MEDIA PERSONALITY AND TEAM OWNER BRETT MURRAY, AND HIGHLY RESPECTED MOTORSPORT FIGURE MARG DYMOND WERE HONOURED WITH ORDER RECOGNITIONS IN THIS YEAR’S AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS LIST FOR SUPERB CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SPORT.

All three individuals have made invaluable contributions to motorsport in their respective fields over their lifetimes, earning them positions among the annual Australia Day Honours Roll by the Governor-General on Sunday, January 25.

Richards, born in New Zealand, won the Bathurst 1000 seven times, while also claiming four Australian Touring Car Championships (ATCC).

Richards was a massive figure of the Australian racing scene, winning Bathurst three-consecutive times with Peter Brock from 1978 to 1980, back-to-back with Mark Skaife in 1991 and 1992, and then again with Swede Rickard Rydell in the 1998 Super Touring race.

“His impact on Australian motorsport spans generations and it has created a long list of memories that fans of the sport will hold on to for the rest of their lives.

“Jim’s commitment to excellence helped shape the standards we see in the sport today and this recognition is richly deserved for one of the greatest drivers to compete in this country.”

"JIM’S ACHIEVEMENTS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES, BUT IT WAS HIS LONGEVITY, PROFESSIONALISM AND SPORTSMANSHIP THAT TRULY SET HIM APART,"

In 2002, Richards made history by winning his seventh Bathurst 1000 with Skaife at the age of 55, making him the oldest winner in the history of The Great Race.

Richards went on to win the ATCC Drivers’ Championship with BMW in 1985 and 1987, and with Nissan in 1990 and 1991.

The New Zealander, who now resides in Victoria, received his Honorary Member of the Order of Australia (AM) nod in the General Division for “significant service to motor sports.”

Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser acknowledged Richards as one of the greatest drivers seen on Australia’s soil.

“Jim’s achievements speak for themselves, but it was his longevity, professionalism and sportsmanship that truly set him apart,” Fraser said.

Brett Murray, fondly known as “Crusher”, has played a pivotal role in the growth and development of the country’s motorsport media landscape.

With early editorial steps taken as a regional journalist in the New South Wales town of Wagga Wagga, Murray’s career led him to founding media company BAM Media Group in 1991 and motorsport news outlet Speedcafe in 2009, extensively covering local and international motorsport.

Murray’s biggest milestone away from the news cycle came at the 100th running of the Indy 500, where his team, driven in-part by Matthew Brabham, took part in the iconic race.

He has since played a pivotal role on the Pirtek Legends Night, an event filled with memories, insights, and friendship honouring past, present and upcoming members of the motorsport community. The event has also raised more than half a million dollars since its inception for Motorsport Ministries.

Murray has also assisted in the establishment of the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame and helped run the Ultimate Motorsport Prize Raffles raising more than $250,000 for the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney.

Murray was awarded a Lifetime Media Service Award from Motorsport Australia at the National Awards Gala Night for 2018, leading to this year’s Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) acknowledgement.

Fraser stated Murray has provided crucial assistance to various initiatives over the years, greatly benefitting the wider motorsport industry and community.

“To have met Crusher is to have met a force of nature, his drive is as strong as his love for our sport and this award recognises his contribution and his passion,” Fraser said.

“Brett has consistently used his platform to give back, connect people and preserve the sport’s history. His OAM is a fitting acknowledgement of decades of service and dedication.”

Margaret Dymond, a member of the well-known Diamond Family, and former CEO of Penrite Oil joined Murray in receiving an OAM.

The wife of the late John ‘JD’ Dymond, Margaret moved from England to Australia in the late 1950s to support her husband’s work commitments with BP and Lubrizol, before the couple purchased the Penrite Oil Company from its original Founder, Les Mecoles, in 1979.

Fraser finalised by describing Dymond as a key supporter of motorsport through her efforts within the Penrite Oil Company.

“Margaret’s leadership and commitment through her and her family’s work at Penrite Oil has helped sustain grassroots racing and community programs across the country,” Fraser said.

“Marg’s advocacy for youth involvement and industry development has also made a lasting difference behind the scenes.

" MARGARET’S LEADERSHIP AND COMMITMENT THROUGH HER AND HER FAMILY’S WORK AT PENRITE OIL HAS HELPED SUSTAIN GRASSROOTS RACING AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS ACROSS THE COUNTRY,"

“Marg” has been the cornerstone of Penrite for the past 45 years, providing the strong family bond that has kept the company united.

Margaret maintains a hands-on role with the Board and the direction of the company, while supporting Penrite’s sponsorships of grassroots events and charitable causes.

Margaret has championed youth involvement in automotive trades and motorsport activities away from the public eye, gracefully giving back to the industry she has helped form.

The Company is now led by son, Toby, as the CEO, with other Dymond Family members Nigel, Fleur and Jon serving significant roles within the business.

“The motorsport industry is better off for Margaret’s contributions and it’s welldeserved she is recognised in the Australia Day Honour Roll.”

All three’s inclusion in this year’s Australia Day Honours List underpins the vital role motorsport plays in Australia’s sporting and community landscape.

EXPANDS OPERATIONS TO NEW SOUTH WALES

THE NEW SOUTH WALES MOTORSPORT COMMUNITY WILL GAIN GREATER ACCESS TO TRACKSIDE SUPPORT FOLLOWING RACER INDUSTRIES’ ACQUISITION OF MOTORSPORT RACE GEAR (MSRG) INTO ITS BUSINESS OPERATIONS.

The New South Wales motorsport community will gain greater access to trackside support following Racer Industries’ acquisition of MotorSport Race Gear (MSRG) into its business operations.

The announcement reinforces Racer Industries’ commitment to deliver the highest level of service and product range to Australia’s motorsport community.

MSRG is a respected Australian business recognised for supplying high-performance race gear and safety equipment. Racer Industries is Motorsport Australia’s Official Race Accessories Partner.

“By welcoming the MSRG team into Racer Industries, we’re expanding the premium brands and products we can offer, increasing our trackside presence, and improving access for competitors both online and at events,” Nilsson said.

“Most importantly, it strengthens our ability to deliver the best possible service to our customers.”

WHEN EVERY SECOND COUNTS IN MOTORSPORT, FIRE SAFETY TECHNOLOGY BECOMES AS CRITICAL AS HORSEPOWER.

Its range includes racewear, helmets, fire suppression systems, head restraints, and safety products suited to street, track, circuit, tarmac, rallying, and offroad racing.

By bringing MSRG into the Racer Industries network, competitors will benefit from an expanded offering across premium racewear and safety equipment, providing access to a broader range of brands, improved online access and greater availability through more locations.

Racer Industries Business Development Manager – Performance Mathew Nilsson outlined the announcement is an exciting step forward for Racer Industries and its customers.

As part of this transition, Tony Dunn will join Racer Industries, bringing extensive product expertise and a strong reputation for customer service.

Dunn will be based out of Kings Park, providing local product and customer support while strengthening Racer Industries’ direct support for competitors throughout New South Wales.

Dunn explained the significance of the announcement and the change it will mean for the NSW motorsport community.

“I’m proud to become a part of the Racer Industries family,” Dunn said.

“Our customers will now benefit from a much broader product range and stronger support across New South Wales, and I look forward to being able to deliver an even higher level of service to the motorsport community.”

The Sydney-based Racer Industries Trackside Store will continue attending events throughout NSW in

2026, showcasing MSRG’s trusted product range, while introducing new products from the Racer Industries range.

This expanded trackside support will ensure Racer Industries continues to assist local motorsport competitors at every level, from grassroots racers through to national series, by providing reliable access to essential safety equipment, expert advice, and premium race accessories when and where they are needed most.

The announcement follows the renewal of the partnership between Racer Industries and Motorsport Australia in early 2026.

Established in 2022, the partnership sees Racer Industries continue as Motorsport Australia’s Official Race Accessories Partner, supporting competitors at every level through education, safety initiatives, and technical and product expertise.

Tony Dunn and the Racer Industries Trackside Store both made their first appearance together at One Raceway for the Historic Summer Spectacular held from 6-8 February.

Australian rally star Taylor Gill revealed his 2026 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) challenger, unveiling the new livery ahead of his highly anticipated WRC2 category debut.

Competing in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 alongside fellow Australian co-driver Dan Brkic in 2026, this year marks a significant milestone as the pair transition into Rally2 machinery for the first time.

The program is underpinned by partnerships with Australian and Finnish businesses, headlined by Nordic bank, Ferratum.

The new livery, which debuted earlier this month at Rally Sweden, features a blend of grey and blue, a colour scheme that holds personal significance for Gill.

“Seeing the car in its full colours for the first time makes the start of our WRC campaign feel incredibly real,” Gill said.

“The grey and bright blue on the car is a bit of a nod to some of my first rallies in Australia. I never thought those colours would adorn a car of mine in the WRC, but here we are. This is a dream come true.

“We’ve been working tirelessly behind the scenes to prepare

for this step up, and to have a livery that looks this sharp is awesome. It represents the hard work of our entire team and the incredible partners who are with us on the journey.”

Gill stated prior to Rally Sweden, where he and Brkic ultimately secured an outstanding P4 result over 12-15 February, he was excited to feature the new car at the season opening event.

Gill and Brkic also won the FIA Junior World Rally Championship round in Sweden in 2025.

“Sweden is a legendary event, and one we’ve done well on in the past, so it was a great place to have our first event in a Rally2 car. We are very busy and excited about what lies ahead,” Gill concluded.

IMPRESSIVE RUNS HIGHLIGHT HUGE FESTIVAL OF SPEED WEEKEND

The 2026 Canberra Festival of Speed endured all kinds of weather conditions for its third edition, which was marked by extreme circuit displays in the process.

Thousands braved both heat and rain to enjoy the festival’s unique celebration of automotive culture and performance with more than 250 vehicles in attendance.

In a sign of its growing popularity outside of the nation’s capital, approximately 40 per cent of all tickets sold were purchased by patrons from outside the ACT, reinforcing the Festival’s role in attracting visitors and driving overnight stays.

The festival recorded high international ticket sales, with attendees visiting the nation’s capital from places like the United States, Poland, Belgium and France, alongside visitors from across Australia.

Festival director Darren Pearce highlighted the Canberra Festival of Speed’s increasing profile on the global motorsport and automotive calendar.

“We want to say a big thank you to the fans who came out to support the Canberra Festival of Speed and contribute to what was a great atmosphere despite the extreme weather,” Pearce said.

“We are incredibly grateful to our volunteers, staff, sponsors, and

vehicle owners and drivers who put the weather aside to make sure the fans got all the Festival action.

“The incredible display of exotic cars, both static and on circuit didn’t disappoint and it was thrilling to see so many families enjoying everything the festival has to offer.

“Our patrons are passionate about motorsport and automotive culture and to see families across multiple generations sharing this experience together is very satisfying.”

The People’s Choice for Vehicle of the Festival was a tie between the 2024 winner, a purple McLaren 720s and the DeLorean, particularly popular with their owners dressed as ‘Doc’ and ‘Marty McFly’ from the film Back To The Future.

Gold Logie winner and professional driver Grant Denyer was among the celebrities to participate in charity hot laps that saw money raised for Hands Across Canberra.

Denyer was joined by the legendary John Bowe, three-time Australian Rally Champion Harry Bates, and Festival Media Host and racer Tammie Soole.

JENNIFER CAMPBELL AUSSIE RACING CARS DEPUTY CALLED UP TO GR CUP

Senior Motorsport Australia official Jennifer Campbell has been appointed the new Race Director of the Toyota GR Cup for the upcoming 2026 season.

Serving under Rob Thiry in 2025 as Deputy Race Director of Aussie Racing Cars, Campbell has served several leadership and officiating roles over the years.

After signing the dotted line to officially become GR Cup Race Director, Campbell felt excited at the prospect of taking over a category that has served as a proving ground for so many of the nation’s best drivers.

“It was a feeling of excitement certainly, I’m really excited to get everything going ahead of the start of the season,” Campbell said.

“It’s a privilege to get any sort of role in this position, but to be a part of the Toyota GR Cup in this way is an extremely exciting opportunity as not only is it a Spec Series, but the category also plays an important role in shaping the development of our country’s next generation of drivers.

“I’m still learning, I’m always going to keep learning, we’ll all learn together and we look forward to what will be a great year for the category.”

In addition to being the Deputy Race Director for Aussie Racing

Campbell has been a committed member of the officials cohort at a young age, beginning trackside duties at the age of 16, the minimum age for trackside officials, and even earlier supporting her parents to officiate where she could.

Campbell, who spent two years as part of Motorsport Australia’s Senior officials Development Program, was grateful for the abundance of support she has received from instructors and mentors over the years.

“There has been so many people I’ve spent time with and asked questions,” Campbell added.

“Ferrari Race Director Tony Jenkins springs to mind, Trans Am Race Director Matt Balcombe dragged me up into race control in 2021, James Taylor, I’ve known him for quite a lot of years as well and has helped push me in the right direction, David Mori and Rob Thiry

too who was my mentor in Aussie Racing Cars. Kimberly Hughes has also been just a great rock and person to discuss things with.

“So many people have helped to put me in this position and I look forward to getting things started for the upcoming season.”

Motorsport Australia Officials Manager Aidan Siegel was extremely happy with Campbell’s appointment to the role, stating she is more than qualified to lead one of the nation’s top race categories.

“Jen has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership, professionalism and race control expertise across some of the country’s biggest events,” Siegel said.

“Her appointment as Race Director is a well-earned step forward in her career as an official and reflects both her capability and commitment to officiating excellence.

“We’re confident she will do an great job leading the Toyota GR Cup in 2026.”

The five-round 2026 Toyota GR Cup season begins at Sydney Motorsport Park on 20-22 February.

AUSSIE DUO DRIVE WELL IN NEW ZEALAND

AUSTRALIAN DRIVERS JAMES WHARTON AND JACK TAYLOR WILL BEGIN PREPARATIONS FOR THE REST OF 2026, FOLLOWING STRONG PERFORMANCES AT THE 2026 CASTROL TOYOTA FORMULA REGIONAL OCEANIA TROPHY SERIES IN NEW ZEALAND DURING THE MONTH OF JANUARY.

Australian drivers James Wharton and Jack Taylor will begin preparations for the rest of 2026, following strong performances at the 2026 Castrol Toyota Formula Regional Oceania Trophy Series in New Zealand during the month of January.

The Formula Regional Oceania Trophy Series, which served as the headline category of the New Zealand NextGen Championship, provided exhilarating race sessions across four rounds on both the North and South Islands.

The season opened at Hampton Downs, where both drivers made solid starts across a demanding four-race weekend. Wharton delivered consistent results, highlighted by a fifth-place finish in Race 3 and two additional top-10 finishes, banking 46 points to sit eighth in the early standings.

Taylor showed improvement throughout the round, climbing into the top 10 in Race 2 before a minor medical issue prevented him from starting the final race.

Round 2 at Taupo marked a major breakthrough for Wharton, who claimed his first victory of the season after starting third on the grid in Race 2. The win, paired with a top-five result later in the weekend,

underlined his growing confidence in the category.

Taylor also impressed, particularly in wet conditions, where he secured pole position for the Denny Hulme Memorial Trophy feature race and finished the round in sixth place.

Wharton was absent for Round 3 at Teretonga Park, leaving Taylor to fly the Australian flag solo, where he delivered. Taylor finished inside the top 10 in the two races not affected by weather, including fifth and fourth-place results, climbing to 14th in the drivers’ standings with a valuable points haul in the process.

The final round at Highlands Motorsport Park brought four strong race efforts for Taylor (one of which was the rescheduled Teretonga session) and a return to form for Wharton. Wharton secured a podium with a second-place finish in Race 2 and wrapped up the season with a run of top-10 results, finishing eighth overall on 167 points. Taylor added consistent finishes to end the campaign 14th with 123 points.

Wharton now turns his focus to Formula 3 preparations for 2026, while Taylor exits the series with an abundance of momentum and a growing reputation on the international stage.

EMBRACED AT FOREST LAKE STATE HIGH SCHOOL

Forest Lake State High School’s Esports Program of Excellence in Queensland is now in its fourth year, and the 2025 season was its biggest and most community-focused yet.

With over 150 students from Year 7 to Year 12 enrolled, the program continues to prove that Esports is a popular and effective component of the school’s curriculum.

The school’s students study Esports as a subject, aligned to the Australian Curriculum (Version 9) in Digital Technologies from Years 7-12 run by the school’s Esports team of MJ Raatz, Ian Clapham, Nick Silva (Coordinator), Matt Scholz, Robert Correia, Sam Elmer, Bailey Peterson, Zack McSweeney and Luke Ryder.

In Years 7 and 8, the Esports curriculum also incorporates Health and Physical Education, ensuring that teamwork, wellbeing, personal development, and physical health are central pillars to student success both in and out of game.

Each year, Forest Lake State High School celebrates its partnerships through the Bridgestone Cup, a community Esports event that brings together students, teachers, parents, sponsors and local organisations.

The most recent Bridgestone Cup was held late last year and was led by Principal Sally Hawkes, backed by Deputy

Principals Joanne Francis and Lucas Nicholls, who suited up to compete alongside students, staff, parents and community.

“For our young people, seeing senior leaders participate isn’t just fun - it’s powerful. It reinforces that they are seen, valued, and supported,” a school spokesperson stated.

The Cup has become a highlight of the school’s calendar, bringing motorsport, technology and education together to support young people.

Mark Wallace of Bridgestone Select Forest Lake’s has actively participated in the program every year, offering encouragement, expertise, and authentic community connection. His ongoing support shows how Esports can create meaningful pathways for future careers.

Last year’s Bridgestone Cup was extra special, with university pathways partners joining us to help students understand real opportunities ahead of them. Other major sponsors included HP, Data#3, Endgame Esports and Valor Esports, Australian Computer Society, Prodigy Learning, GameAware and Sports Tech College.

INAUGURAL HISTORIC SUMMER SPECTACULAR LIVES UP TO NAME

THE INAUGURAL ONE RACEWAY HISTORIC SUMMER SPECTACULAR WAS HAILED A SUCCESS, AS SPECTATORS TURNED OUT TO WATCH AN ARRAY OF HISTORIC CARS DOING BATTLE ON THE GOULBURN CIRCUIT.

The first day of action was held on the Wakefield Circuit in hot weather conditions, matching the equally hot intensity of the on-track action

In the Group N (historic touring car) Under 2 Litre category, David Noakes prevailed in his Ford Mk1 Escort to notch up a pair of race wins from the Mini Cooper S’s of Tom Tweedie and Alex D’Onofrio.

In the Group N Over 2 Litre class, race veteran Brad Tilley won both races in his Mustang, ahead of the Camaro driven by Queenslander Adrian Moyle.

The Group S (historic production sports car) category was split into two divisions, “Bombers” and “Mosquitos”. Canberra driver Graham Gulson (Porsche 911) and Southern Highlands competitor David Stone (MGB) won races in their respective divisions.

In combined Formula Ford/Formula Vee, Garry Watson was best of the Formula Fords, leading home Kris Matich (son of former Australian open-wheel legend Frank Matich). Debutant Patrick Balk was the best of the Formula Vee runners.

Wet weather on day two forced event organisers to combine the Group N and S fields, ensuring all competitors received generous track time.

The first of the Sunday Group N races featured a handicap format, where cars started in staggered intervals from slowest to fastest.

Driving his Mini Cooper S, Hamish Bedwell put in an exemplary performance in challenging conditions to take the race win, earning the “Steve Shelley Way” perpetual trophy from circuit owner Steve Shelley.

The other two Group N races were won by Tilley and Moyle.

Gulson looked to continue his Group S domination after winning the first of the Sunday races, but a spin on the first lap of the final race dropped him to the rear of the field.

Chris Jackson (De Tomaso Pantera) won from Doug Barbour (Porsche 911) and Joe Calleja (Chevrolet Corvette).

Watson took another pair of wins in the combined Formula Ford/Formula Vee category, while the event program was rounded out by the Classic Cars and Invited Supersprint.

Spectators were treated to fast laps from a variety of historic machines including Chris Clearihan’s unique 1973 Bolwell Nagari and Paul Burke’s Triumph TR7 V8.

RALLY IN NSW SHAPING THE FUTURE OF

Members of the Australian motorsport community are being urged to take part in a survey produced by the New South Wales Government regarding the public use of the Great Koala National Park and potential rezoning that may impact access to traditional rally roads.

Invited to participate in the consultation process, Motorsport Australia met with relevant parties and government administration bodies to share the ongoing challenges as well as community benefits of supporting rally activities in New South Wales.

Once this occurs, Motorsport Australia will lose access to locations where rally may be held, unless a road network can be gazetted as Forestry roads, rather than National Park roads.

This currently exists (in small numbers) whereby Forestry roads are situated within a National Park and Motorsport Australia still has access to them.

National Parks policies, which prohibit competitive motorsport, eliminate access to vast networks of traditional rally roads.

Roads previously used for these events were once situated on the NSW South Coast, Central NSW, Mid North Coast, and areas such as the Watagans National Park, Moruya, Batemans Bay, and Coffs Harbour.

Motorsport Australia representatives, led by NSW Director Coral Taylor and Club and State Competition Manager Bruce Astbury, have been dealing with the NSW Government regarding this issue, with important assistance from the NSW Parliamentary Friends of Motorsport.

“Over recent weeks, we’ve held a number of constructive discussions with the NSW Government and key stakeholders about the future of rally in the proposed Great Koala National Park area,” Taylor said.

“Those conversations have focused on how we can balance environmental priorities with the long-standing presence of motorsport within the proposed National Park area.

“We’ve also outlined the social, economic and community benefits that rally brings to regional areas.

“Importantly, there has been a willingness from all parties to listen and explore practical solutions.

“However, this Survey is another key step in that process, and we encourage the motorsport community to have their say.”

The Survey, open to the public, records submission data such as frequency of visits to the Great Koala National Park area, interests and activities visitors would engage in in the area, and any ideas to improve the region to name the few.

Head to the NSW Government’s Have Your Say Page to make a contribution as a motorsport competitor or spectator. Submissions close on Sunday 1 March.

SAFETY HARNESSES

BEST PROTECTION WHEN CORRECTLY MAINTAINED

Motorsport Safety Harnesses play a pivotal role in protecting drivers and/or occupants during in an incident.

When dealing with safety harnesses, it is imperative to keep them maintained and replaced over time as required, an important practice when it comes to all safety equipment and keeping them compliant and up-to-date.

This is also the case when selecting the correct type of belt to suit your harness application and making sure it is installed properly.

Safety Harnesses come in the form of different styles, exhibiting features such as different width webbings, numbers of attachment points and methods of attachment.

On this page, we will focus on the different ways harnesses are attached to the vehicle.

ATTACHING A HARNESS TO YOUR VEHICLE

Safety harnesses must be installed in accordance with Motorsport Australia Manual, Technical Appendix – Schedule I while following the manufacturer instructions supplied with the safety harness. There are many different methods for attaching a harness to your vehicle.

For a production vehicle, safety harnesses are most commonly attached using Eye Bolts connected to unmodified factory seat belt mounts, a harness bar which is installed as part of the safety cage structure or using approved reinforcement

In a production vehicle 7/16 Unified National Fine (UNF) threads are common however M10 or M12 threads may be used so it is important to confirm you have the correct hardware and harness to suit your application.

For a purpose-built motorsport vehicle, it is common to see a wide variety of harness attachment methods used to attach the harness directly to the chassis. Many of these are tested to validate they meet stringent load testing requirements and will often use smaller M8 or 5/16 UNF hardware.

Where a safety harness is replaced, it is best practice to install a harness using identical attachment methods (as shown below). Where this is not possible it is recommended to contact the vehicle manufacturer and harness supplier to confirm suitability of any replacement.

DAVID TAIT KC

1951 - 2025

Motorsport Australia joins the wider motorsport community in honouring the life of David Tait KC.

The former President of Motorsport Australia and Queensland State Council Member, David Tait KC, passed away at the age of 74 after a battle with illness.

David served as the President of Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (now Motorsport Australia) from 1994 to 1995, taking over from John Large OAM at a pivotal time in the governing body’s history and development.

One of Australia’s foremost legal counsel, David was also Senior Vice President for the governing body in the three years prior to his time as President.

David became a recipient of the prestigious Motorsport Australia Award of Merit in 1999 and was also a long-serving Board Member.

Current Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser remarked David was a prominent figure in Motorsport Australia’s timeline.

“David was a towering figure in Motorsport Australia’s history, whose leadership and acumen helped shape the organisation at a critical time,” Fraser said.

“His legal expertise and strategic thinking earned the respect of colleagues and peers across the sport.

“David’s contribution leaves a lasting legacy and he will be remembered fondly by those he worked with throughout the motorsport landscape.”

David, a motorsport enthusiast since childhood, was no stranger to competing in motorsport events.

As a youngster, his neighbour owned a locally made Centaur 3B Clubman, which then introduced David to motorkhanas and hill climbs. While undertaking his legal studies at university, David owned a Clubman, and then a Cooper Ford, which he campaigned successfully in MG Car Club events.

It was only fitting the local MG Car Club of Queensland nominated him for the Queensland State Council in 1977, filling a busy 12 months for David. He also married to his wife Jeanette and was admitted to the bar.

David was also the chief architect of the Australian Motor Sports Commission (AMSC) and was Chairman of the Shannons National Series. He continued on the AMSC committee and took a second term as Chairman at the request of then President Colin Osborne in the early 2000s.

David is survived by his wife Jeanette, daughter Margot and son John. A funeral service was held at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Clayfield, on Thursday 12 February to honour David’s life.

Motorsport Australia extends its condolences to David’s family and friends.
