WELCOME TO SPEED READ

The first quarter of the year is busy for motorsport in Australia and the month of March ended with a tally of 136 events nationwide - more events than January and February combined.

It’s an exciting time for not only our competitors, but also fans of motorsport, with the EROAD Australian Rally Championship, Shannons SpeedSeries and Comiskey Mining Services Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship all kicking off in March and April.

Five categories filled the busy GT Festival Phillip Island card to open the 2026 Shannons SpeedSeries season, a strong marker for the positive trajectory of SpeedSeries participation. An additional milestone for motorsport in Australia, the SpeedSeries welcomed the Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia - the first-ever onemake Ford Mustang Australian category.

Motorsport Australia was thrilled to launch the 45th running of the Off Road Championship with the support of Comiskey Mining Services as the category’s naming rights partner. The opener of the four-round season at Pooncarie was won by Victorian Dale Martin and navigator Mark Degruchy and set the tone for an exciting season ahead.

The EROAD Australian Rally Championship began its calendar in strong fashion with more than 15,000 spectators in attendance for Round 1 at Rally Queensland in Gympie. New stops, new formats, new contenders and a new broadcast partnership with FOX Sports Australia provided ample buzz among the Service Park as Harry Bates and Australian rally legend Coral Taylor claimed the opening round of the year.

In March, we launched a new Single Event Auto Test Licence that makes it easier to get involved with motorkhana and khanacross events around the country, offering a simple and affordable way to participate – a great option for beginners and those new to the sport.

Motorsport Australia remains mindful of the implications of the global fuel supply crisis, with many individuals and businesses already being impacted. We are in discussions with relevant industry bodies and government stakeholders to stay on top of ongoing developments.

Motorsport Australia will continue to keep the community informed as things evolve, while advocating for the responsible use of fuel so the sport can continue to deliver positive social and economic benefits to the communities and towns where motorsport takes place.

During tough times, we will continue to champion our community, and ensure every club has the tools and support needed to grow and operate.

The opening months of 2026 have already shown the potential of what we can accomplish together, and we’ll continue to build on that moving forward.

Heat 1 on the Saturday laid the blueprint for the weekend for the pair, with Bates and Taylor guiding their Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 to victory after winning five of the eight stages finishing 17 seconds clear of Scott Pedder and Glenn Macneall in their Skoda Fabia RS Rally2.

Teammates Lewis Bates and Anthony McLoughlin rounded out the podium, claiming three stage wins and the Saturday Power Stage to bank important bonus points.

Rising talent Jackson Long impressed on debut in a Skoda Fabia R5 to finish fourth, while Troy Dowel and Bernie Webb edged out Josh Redhead and Ray WinwoodSmith in a tight battle for fifth.

Dowel and Webb’s result also secured them the East Coast Cup win for the heat, while Redhead and Winwood-Smith claimed honours in the WOLF Sport Cup.

Heat 2 on Sunday followed a similar sequence of events, with Bates and Taylor again setting the stage pace.

Despite starting third on the road, the pair dominated the morning, winning all four stages to build a commanding lead.

Pedder and Macneall did well to reduce the margin throughout the day, but Bates and Taylor responded by taking the final two stages, including the Sunday Power Stage, grabbing another 17-second victory.

“It was a really strong start to the season – two heat wins and one Power Stage win,” Bates said post-rally.

“We felt comfortable in the car from the beginning, and especially today we were able to push on and build a solid lead this morning, which was great. So yeah, very happy.

“It’s definitely exciting to get that first win on the board for the year and now focus on the rest of the season. If you look at the ARC, it’s so important to keep collecting points along the way, and we’ve taken almost maximum points this weekend.”

“That’s a great feeling to start the season, and our pace looks promising for what’s ahead.”

“It’s a good confidence boost for next week. I’m heading to Portugal next week for a WRC round, then coming straight back for Rally WA – so three rallies in five weeks, which is pretty cool.”

The podium remained unchanged from Saturday, with Pedder second and Lewis Bates third.

Dowel and Webb backed up their Saturday performance with fourth place and secured the East Coast Cup bragging rights for the weekend, while Redhead and Winwood-Smith again took WOLF Sport Cup honours.

Attention turns to Western Australia next month with the ARC Plant Hire Forest Rally taking place on 23-25 May.

TEAM THRYV CLAIM EMOTIONAL BATHURST 6 HOUR WIN

Thomas Randle and brothers Ben and Michael Kavich claimed an inspired victory at the 2026 Hi-Tec Oils Bathurst 6 Hour, overcoming late-race hurdles to secure their first outright win on Sunday.

BMW M2 Competition, Randle crossed the line second after being passed in the closing stages by Cameron Hill in Dean Campbell’s BMW.

However, a 15-second penalty applied to Hill and Campbell pushed the pair down to fifth, handing the win to the Kavich/ Randle trio.

Camaro with Chris Lillis and Zach Bates, ran off at The Chase on the final lap.

Muggleton recovered to finish third, while Tim Slade and Tony and Kyle Alford placed fourth.

Hill and Campbell were classified fifth ahead of Hadrian Morrall and Tyler Mecklem, whose Mustang ran much of the race without fourth gear.

The result marked a milestone moment for the Kavich brothers, who had competed in all ten editions of the event before finally achieving outright success. Their victory also preserved BMW’s unbeaten record in the race, with ten consecutive wins since 2016.

Michael, speaking post-race, said it was an extremely rewarding feeling to achieve a lifelong goal.

“It’s unbelievable, what a brilliant job Tommy [Randle] did, he’s like a brother from another mother,” Kavich said.

“We’re just stoked, we’ve dreamt of this since we were children watching our dad running around, seeing the likes of Brock and Johnson.

“So, to achieve something we’ve dreamt of since we were kids, is unbelievable.”

The contest itself was actionpacked, featuring eleven safety cars, 13 lead changes and eight different race leaders.

Second place went to Cameron McLeod in a Ford Mustang after Josh Muggleton, sharing a Chevrolet

Seventh overall and first in A2 Extreme Performance (Forced Induction) went to Oliver and Liam Loiacono with Alex Holzl in their Mitsubishi Evo X, narrowly ahead of Cameron Laws, Cody Gillis and Leon Cordoto. Amar Sharma, Grant Johnson and Jack Le Brocq were ninth after penalties, with Ric and Tom Shaw and Zaki Wazir completing the top ten.

Class honours included Karlie Buccini, Courtney Prince and Tabitha Ambrose winning B1 for the third straight year, while Richard Shinkfield, Andrew Milford and Chris Holdt topped B2.

Trevor and James Keene claimed Class C in a Volkswagen Golf R, Andrew McMaster’s crew won Class D, and in Class E, teenage drivers Ruben Dan and Ashton Seiders joined 71-year-old Calvin Gardner to take victory in a Mazda 3 SP25.

The overall attendance of 20,216 was the second-largest event attendance on record for the Bathurst 6 Hour.

The Bathurst 6 Hour and the Bathurst Regional Council also announced a new five-year agreement to extend the Easter enduro through 2031, locking in a staple of motorsport on The Mountain for the future.

PEEBLES ON THE RIGHT PATH

Fresh off being runner-up in the Le Mans Cup LMP3 category with Rinaldi Racing in 2025, Peebles has been busy progressing to the next step in the early stages of his career.

This year already, Peebles recently participated in the 2025/26 Asian Le Mans Series (ALMS), marking a debut in the LMP2 class, providing crucial experience before the commencement of Peebles’ next motorsport adventure, the 2026 European Le Mans Series (ELMS).

Peebles surprised everyone on the grid, including himself, winning the first race of the 4 Hours of Dubai. In the remaining three races, Peebles and the team managed to podium each time and come away with the Championship in Abu Dhabi.

“In LMP2, as the name suggests, there is a lot more power and also a heap more downforce, which means way more cornering speed, so I did not expect too much in terms of results during the ALMS,” Peebles said.

“But during the ALMS races I had good speed, and coming away with a win in the last race and bringing the car over the line, was just something I did not expect to do so soon. It was an unbelievable team effort by everyone at DKR Engineering.

“ALMS this year was super, super competitive with several top HyperCar Pro drivers and really top teams, so to finish fourth in that Championship, with a win, I couldn’t be happier.”

Late last year Peebles signed with United Autosports, to be part of their PRO LMP2 car line up in ELMS alongside Gregoire Saucy and Ben Hanley.

AT 18 YEARS OF AGE, VICTORIAN GRIFFIN PEEBLES IS QUICKLY BECOMING A MUSTSEE COMPETITOR ON THE INTERNATIONAL MOTORSPORT LANDSCAPE.

The 2026 ELMS campaign season officially began at the 4 Hours of Barcelona on 12 April where Peebles helped his team to a podium finish.

Currently based in Valencia, Griffin deals with a balancing act of responsibility on and off the track, still at school finishing his A-Levels.

“I am lucky enough to have a racing sim at home, that I drive on almost daily, especially if I am preparing for an upcoming race,” Pebbles noted.

“I also have personal trainer near my home here in Valencia, and I am with him at least three times per week.”

“We are doing some pre-season testing with the team, but the seat-time you get is much less than in the lower grades like Formula 4.

“With endurance, you are always sharing the car with other drivers and teams are much larger, testing costs are much higher, so we do less days.”

Endurance multi-class racing has always been Peebles’ “true passion”, stating the team aspect of endurance racing is more intense, and winning a Championship being new in the car during the 2025/26 ALMS campaign was crazy for the rising star.

Peebles previously spent two seasons in Formula 4, ultimately becoming the 2024 Formula Winter Series Champion in Spain.

STRONG TURNOUT AT VRC OPENER AS TRAVERSO & CARR CLAIM WIN

A major turnout at the opening round of the 2026 Victorian Rally Championship (VRC) has put the season in a strong position for the remainder of the year.

The Mitta Mountain Rally is a highly-regarded event, launching the Championship campaign one hour’s drive south-east of Albury-Wodonga.

Danny Traverso and Anthony Carr led the 50 registered vehicles on March 21 in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo, winning the event outright by eight minutes (2:03:51), coupled with wins in both heats the Saturday and Sunday.

Rally organisers announced a total of 37 rally crews were entered into the VRC field, as Traverso and Carr put their foot down early in the season, outpacing the Nissan Pulsar outfit of Jake Bramble and Phillip Bonser, who managed a third and fourth-place finish in the respective heats (2:11:33).

“We’re pretty proud of this, it’s our first VRC win outright,” Traverso said.

The pair were fifth-quickest for the Saturday Heat before improving to second-fastest on the Sunday, starting off their 2026 campaign in strong form.

Andrew Taylor and Michael Stanbrough went above all else in the Victorian Club Rally Series by four minutes (1:57:31) in the Datsun Stanza over five stages. The pair outperformed Historic Rally Association duo Raymond Garrad and Shane Walters (2:01:29) in their Subaru Impreza, while Datsun 1600 team David Lawrance and Darren Davison finished third outright (2:07:10).

Jeffrey David and Grant Geelan (#13 Porsche 911), and Bramble and Bonser took out wins in the 2WD and 4WD classes respectively for the first round of the East Coast Challenge Rally Series.

Motorsport Australia Victorian State Rally Chair Darryn Snooks, who also fell prey to a stray rock in Stage 4, receiving a tyre puncture and later a lost drive on Sunday, was pleased with the turnout from the weekend.

“I think we’ve come second, third, here and there, and we’ve always been close, but never good enough.

“Whether it’s been ‘Brendo’ (Brendan Reeves) or someone else has got us, Justin Dowel or whoever, so I’m pretty happy about the result and the fight we had to put in today.”

Defending Victorian Champions Reeves and Aidan O’Halloran will look to bounce back in the second round of the championship, with the pair unable to complete either heat after hitting a pair of rocks in the second stage, as well as the final stage of the event.

In the #10 Nissan 180SX, Rowan Quill and Michelle Canning were seeded third out right and first among the Club and 2WD classes (2:11:50).

“The Mitta Mountain Rally is a very respected event on the Victorian rally calendar and participants recognise that each year the championship heads there,” Snooks said.

“The event enjoyed a particularly strong turnout this year, which was great to see. It’s always good to get that first event under the belt and we hope it sets the tone for another successful season to come.”

JASMIN LOW

Motorsport Australia’s FIA Girls on Track participants often undertake a range of extra curricular activities during their school studies. This included 18-year-old South Australian Jasmin Low.

Described as a sustainability and social justice champion by the South Australian Certificate of Education Board, Jasmin earned a Merit classification for her Research Project on Formula 1’s net zero goals and their relevance to Australia’s climate targets.

As a writer for DIVEBOMB Motorsport Magazine, Jasmin publishes articles on Feeder Series motorsport, representing the magazine alongside local and international press at motorsport events.

Low is also a founding member of her school’s Reconciliation Action Plan Committee and actively promotes cultural awareness and inclusion. Jasmin aspires to influence ethical innovation in motorsport.

Low’s research project was an extensive undertaking, that took two terms to complete during her Year 11 studies.

“Basically, you get one semester to take an in-depth research project into any topic of your choosing, and you need to go out and explore all the different avenues, where it could take you, do a folio, and then you produce an outcome like a written report, or a website reflecting on your work,” Low said.

“So, as part of that, I came to the Australian Grand Prix for the first time in 2024, and I spoke to the ESG manager and technical director at Formula One at the time, which was a really important part of my research.

“I then consolidated all of that into a report in which I earned a State Merit

for it, which meant I was in the top 2% of the whole student cohort.”

At last year’s bp Adelaide Grand Final event, Jasmin shadowed Motorsport Australia Development Manager Charlie Barlow and Michael Heaton from Supercars, to learn more about broadcasting and media coverage, while also covering social media updates for Women in Automotive.

At the end of 2025, St Aloysius College in Adelaide submitted Jasmin for the Governor’s Commendation, becoming one of the 17,000 nominated students from schools around the state.

One of 40 who achieved this award, Low received the call on the same day she got her final year 12 results.

“My first Girls on Track event I went to I was only 15. So that was back in 2023 at the Adelaide 500 as it was known then,” Low added.

“I was able to make some really good connections there, some lifelong friends as well who’ve also made their way through this particular component of the program.

“Last year was the first opportunity for me to come to the Career & Mentoring Summit, so we’ve all learned a lot of skills, like networking and personal branding, going to employers and confidently say this is who we are.

“From the mentorship side of it. I was connected with Kate Peck, who has been such a positive influence during this whole process. She’s amazing and was such a great sounding board for my ideas when it came to my pitch in relation to my accreditation.”

Peck, a staunch advocate for the Girls on Track program, was extremely proud of Jasmin’s commitment to her work in recent years.

“Jasmin is the hardest working, most humble, gorgeous and switched on person. She uses so much initiative and flies under the radar. So this doesn’t surprise me at all,” Peck said.

“Because she’s still so young and she works so hard behind the scenes, she’s definitely been one of the most outstanding mentees that I’ve had in my time with Girls on Track.

“Her future is really bright and that has been, in part, thanks to Girls on Track, being able to inspire her and show her that women can achieve great things, and she’s really grabbed it by both hands and just rolling with it.”

Low is now undertaking her Bachelor of Business majoring in Marketing and Communications at Adelaide University. She plans to begin a Master’s degree in sustainable futures.

SELECTED FOR EMPOWER PROGRAM’S NEXT STEP

Claire Redfern has been selected to take on formal duties at all Shannons SpeedSeries events for 2026 as she steps up to Level 2 of the SRO Empower Program in a Peer Mentor capacity.

As part of a new initiative of FIA Girls on Track, Redfern will take on the role of Peer Mentor for the current group of Level 1 participants during Shannons SpeedSeries this year. The category will also provide Redfern with more in-depth, hands-on work experience.

The Level 2 Peer Mentor acts as a leader, point of contact, and support person for new Level 1 program participants. Redfern, who attended the GT Festival Phillip Island event in March, said it’s an incredibly exciting and rewarding opportunity.

“Coming off the experience last year - which I absolutely loved - it was wonderful to be selected to join the SRO event team as part of the program,” Redfern said.

“Not only does it further solidify my hunger to work within motorsport, but it also helps build on my experience, making this year feel both motivating and validating.

“I believe it to be a wonderfully unique opportunity within the Shannons SpeedSeries to not only continue developing my skills, but also to gain further insight into such a fast-paced industry.“

In addition to being a peer mentor, Redfern will assist with creating and managing the participant roster across each event and attending one online pre - event briefing per event.

Redfern will also work as a part of the SRO Event & Category management team on event operational areas such as accreditation, VIP hospitality, team hospitality,

category management, media centre, and race control as per event roster.

“At Phillip Island, the Level 1 participants and I were involved in a variety of roles that provided a well-rounded experience in event operations,” Redfern added.

" I BELIEVE IT TO BE A WONDERFULLY UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY WITHIN THE SHANNONS SPEEDSERIES TO NOT ONLY CONTINUE DEVELOPING MY SKILLS, BUT ALSO TO GAIN FURTHER INSIGHT INTO SUCH A FAST-PACED INDUSTRY."

“This included assisting with media coordination, such as creating Instagram posts and writing race reports, assisting within hospitality, and helping ensure the smooth running of the eventincluding the exciting podiums.

“The opportunity to work closely with different departments gave me a broader understanding of how each area contributes to the overall success of the event, and the efforts every person contributes to create a successful race weekend.”

Motorsport Australia Development Manager Charlie Barlow emphasised the importance of continuing to expand opportunities through the FIA Girls on Track program.

“We’re extremely pleased to see the Empower Program continue to grow, providing clear pathways for young women in motorsport to gain meaningful, hands-on experience,” Barlow said.

“Claire’s progression into the mentorship role is a fantastic example of how the program is building confidence in our future industry leaders.”

SRO Motorsports Australia Series Manager Matleena Pukkila highlighted the importance of bringing emerging talent into the industry.

“Last year’s pilot showed the program’s potential, with participants gaining valuable work experience, building industry connections, and stepping into roles,” Pukkila said.

“We’re excited to work with Claire again after her outstanding contribution at Level 1 in 2025, as she progresses into a Level 2 mentor role in 2026. In partnership with Motorsport Australia, SRO continues to leverage the Shannons SpeedSeries platform to create opportunities for new talent to enter the industry”.

Ford Mustang GT4s dominated Friday Practice, sweeping the top five in the opening session. Lochie Dalton and Aaron Cameron led Silver Cup, while Cameron Crick and Dean Campbell topped Silver-Am.

Saturday’s race produced a Mustang 1-2, although a post-race penalty for Cameron McLeod and Mason Harvey elevated Dalton and Cameron to victory. McLeod and Harvey were classified second, while Daniel Frougas completed the Silver Cup podium. BMW secured a Silver-Am one-two, and Method Motorsport’s Nathan Callaghan and Chris Lillis earned redemption with an Am Cup podium after last year’s crash.

Sunday featured penalties and strategic intrigue. Tom Hayman and Jett Murray claimed Silver Cup victory in a McLaren Artura GT4, ahead of the leading Mustang of Blake Tracey and George Miedecke. Crick and Campbell won Silver-Am, while Glenn Walker rebounded from Saturday’s disappointment to secure Am Cup honours.

MOTORCRAFT MUSTANG CUP AUSTRALIA

It was a historic weekend for Australian motorsport, with the introduction of the first-ever onemake Mustang Championship, as the inaugural Motorcraft Mustang Cup Australia opened Friday with Aaron Cameron claiming pole position.

He backed it up in Saturday’s first race with a dramatic 0.006-second victory over James Golding after a slipstreaming drag race to the line, with James Moffat finishing third.

Sunday belonged to Cam McLeod, who took a dominant victory to secure Ambrose Cup honours after fending off an early challenge from Cameron.

Tyler Everingham completed the podium, while Keith Kassulke and Joe Fawcett claimed respective class wins.

The competitiveness of the category’s field was on full display, with Hunter Robb and Lincoln Taylor sharing session honours on the Friday.

Robb converted pole into victory on Saturday, avoiding multiple incidents behind him to win ahead of Kamal Mrad and Taylor.

Sunday featured two races. Robb continued his strong form in the opener, defeating Taylor and Mrad again.

However, the final race saw Kobi Williams capitalise on a puncture affecting Daniel Quimby to claim his maiden victory on debut, holding off newcomer Xavier Avramides.

FERRARI CHALLENGE TROFEO PIRELLI AUSTRALASIA

Friday sessions saw international drivers set the pace, with Ernst Kirchmayr and Rick Armstrong topping the times. Armstrong carried that form into Saturday, winning Trofeo Pirelli ahead of Antoine Gittany and Kirchmayr, while Aemel Nordin and Ross Tomain dominated their respective classes.

Sunday ended dramatically when Armstrong, Gittany and Enzo Cheng collided behind the safety car. After the incident, Jim Pollicina claimed Trofeo Pirelli victory, Masahiro Taguchi secured Coppa Shell, and Tomain completed a clean sweep in Trofeo Pirelli 488.

FUN ON OFFER IN 2026

A full suite of First Gear program events taking place over the next few months will provide new participants with the full range of tools and skills to begin their motorsport journeys.

The five events scheduled for the remainder of 2026 will be run by the Norwell Racing School, walking participants through the easiest and cheapest introduction to motorsport for those aged between 12 and 17 years of age.

At $149 per session, with all program cars provided, this affordable method of getting into motorsport cannot be understated.

Beginning in early-May, Victorian participants will get the chance to go through the program at Sandown Raceway, the current home of the Supercars Championship Semi-Finals and one of the most well-

known tracks in Australia’s circuit racing landscape. Later in the month the program heads to Wanneroo Raceway for a rare opportunity to learn the basics of motorsport within the backdrop of one of Western Australia’s premier race track venues.

First Gear then travels to South Australia’s Shell V-Power Motorsport Park at Tailem Bend in early June then at Norwell Motorplex in Queensland the following month.

A final stop for First Gear will take place in the Northern Territory towards the end of 2026. More details will be announced soon for individuals taking part in a rare and unforgettable experience.

THE EASIEST WAY TO GET INVOLVED

Motorsport Australia’s Women’s Introduction to Motorsport Program has only a few positions available at sessions being hosted at two of the country’s most respected motorsport venues.

The first of the two, a session at Sandown Raceway on 2 May, is offering a special experience to participants who attend.

Not only will participants receive top-level guidance and teaching from Motorsport Australia’s facilitators, but they will also get the chance to join in on a Speed event and do laps around Sandown.

The following event at Sydney Motorsport Park on Wednesday 6 May will also teach participants how

to prepare a vehicle, track exercises focusing on car control and skills, assistance from people already involved in grassroots motorsport and steps and support to begin participating in motorsport.

At $195 per session and specially tailored to encourage women to get involved in motorsport at the introductory level, the program covers off a range of topics and experiences for participants to experience motorsport for the first time in the familiarity of their own road car.

The only requirement for the program is participants will need to bring their roadworthy road vehicle.

COMISKEY MINING SERVICES ANNOUNCED AS NAMING RIGHTS SPONSOR FOR 45TH YEAR

The Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship (AORC) is pleased to announce Comiskey Mining Services as the naming rights partner for 2026, the 45th year of the championship.

Comiskey Mining Services will be the naming rights sponsor of the national championship for the first time in its history.

To be known as the Comiskey Mining Services Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship, the move represents a major boon for the championship.

A major supporter of off road racing for many years, Comiskey Mining Services directors Brett Comiskey and Brendan Camilleri have been passionate off road competitors for almost 10 years - with Camilleri’s son Kye also a regular in the Pro Buggy class.

Brett Comiskey, Managing Director, Comiskey Mining Services, joined Blanksby in expressing excitement less thanprior to the beginning of the 2026 AORC campaign.

DALE MARTIN SECURES THIRD CONSECUTIVE POONCARIE WIN

VICTORIAN DRIVER DALE MARTIN AND NAVIGATOR MARK DEGRUCHY DROVE SUBLIMELY TO A THIRD-SUCCESSIVE OUTRIGHT VICTORY AT THE WENTWORTH SHIRE POONCARIE DESERT DASH.

The Pro Buggy pairing strung together a weekend of near-faultless performances to dominate the event in south-west New South Wales, triumphing in a field that began with 74 entries but succumbed to a higher-than-usual attrition rate.

Taking maximum points across the Method Race Wheels Prologue and Section 1, Martin was clinical during the three-lap second section. He managed to pull together the fastest time on each completed lap, gently extending his lead while also managing the race from the front for the very first time.

“It feels really good to string three together, I’m really proud of that,” Martin said.

“I like it here and I always feel safe. You can always hang it out and be creative with your lines. There’s a lot of room, it allows you to really get into it and run a high pace.”

Hot on the heels of Martin all weekend was the South Australia Pro Buggy pairing of Todd Lehmann and Aaron Bermingham, who finished outright second. Completing the podium at Pooncarie Trophy Truck entrant Toby Whateley and navigator Max Pietrolaj.

Pooncarie proved a difficult first stop of the Comiskey Mining Services Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship for many, with moderate winds, dust and a deteriorating track creating a tough driving environment.

There were many casualties early on, including championship frontrunners

Beau Robinson and Shane Hutt, and Boston Morgan-Horan and

navigator Will Haddock – both ruled out with mechanical issues.

West Australian Brent Smoothy came agonisingly close to a dream podium in Pooncarie, running third outright until his trophy truck suffered a mechanical issue on the last lap.

Elsewhere, the tricky conditions claimed many competitors through either mechanical DNFs or rollovers.

However, it wasn’t enough to stop 16-year-old West Australian driver Logan Gill and navigator Leigh Van Der Wall.

On their maiden AORC appearance, the pairing were near faultless, storming to victory in the competitive AORC SXS class ahead of defending AORC SXS champion Lachie Bailey and Jordan Zollo.

“I’m ecstatic and I can’t quite believe it to be honest,” Gill said.

“It’s really rough out there and there’s a lot of carnage. There’s plenty of cars out on the side of the track, I’m just glad I made it back.”

Gill said he dared to dream of the breakthrough win after coming home first in Section 1 in Pooncarie. The rest was history.

Completing the SXS podium at the New South Wales event was Queenslander Lochlan Waters and Kevin Waters.

The Comiskey Mining Services Motorsport Australia Off Road Championship now turns it attention to the Tatts Finke Desert Race in June.

COMMITS TO DRIVING PLANS FOR 2026

Haas F1 Team Reserve Driver and Australian Jack Doohan has announced his plans in the driver’s seat for the remainder of 2026, outside of his contractual obligations within the Formula 1 space.

Announced last month, Doohan committed to competing in the 2026 European Le Mans Series (ELMS) endurance competition.

Doohan, who joined Haas a couple of months ago, will represent Nielsen Racing in their #24 LMP2 Oreca machine, joining Briton Ed Pearson and Israeli Roy Nissany.

The deal came at a timely juncture, prior to the start of the 2026 ELMS season, with the 4 Hours of Barcelona opener – at the Circuit de BarcelonaCatalunya – taking place on April 12.

“I’m really excited to be back racing in 2026 and to be joining Nielsen Racing for my first season in LMP2,” Doohan said following the announcement.

“It’s a new challenge with a lot to learn, but I’m confident we’ll get up to speed quickly with such a strong team around me.

“With Roy Nissany and Ed Pearson, we have a great mix of experience and hunger, and I’m looking forward to building strong chemistry and pushing for results.

AUSTRALIAN KARTERS AWARDED FIA PRESIDENT’S MEDAL

The FIA has awarded three of Australia’s leading drivers with President’s medals acknowledging their achievements in the FIA International Karting Rankings.

The International Karting Ranking is a global, computerised system established by the FIA to rank drivers and teams across multiple karting categories. Rankings are calculated based on performance in FIA Karting events and select national championships with different weightings applying to different level of events.

During the recent round of the Australian Kart Championship, Jackson Souslin-Harlow, Milan Sami and Alana Gurney received an FIA President’s medal from Karting Australia CEO Kelvin O’Reilly, on behalf of the FIA President Mohamed Ben Sulayem, in honour of the trio scoring the highest national championship points for Senior, Junior and female competitors respectively in the 2025 season.

The medals are part of the FIA Global Karting Plan, rewarding winners in nations that utilise the National Karting Ranking systems, to aid talent development and recognise the highest achievers in the respective nations.

Karting Australia CEO Kelvin O’Reilly was elated to present the awards, touting the awards as a major step in

Australian Karting being recognised on the global stage.

“This recognition from the FIA is a tremendous honour for Jackson, Milan and Alana, and a proud moment for Australian karting. FEENEY CLAIMS JASON RICHARDS MEMORIAL TROPHY AFTER CHRISTCHURCH ROUND

The Repco Supercars Championship’s first visit to New Zealand’s South Island left fans with fond memories from three days of racing at Ruapuna Raceway.

The inaugural Christchurch Super 440 delivered a weekend of firsts and key championship moments beginning with Friday’s opening race.

The first of four races belonged to rising star Kai Allen, who claimed a breakthrough maiden victory in his 47th start. This followed one week after Kiwi Ryan Wood secured his first career Supercars win, highlighting an exciting fortnight of action for the grid’s youngsters.

The 20-year-old made a bold strategy call to take two tyres at his compulsory stop, jumping the field before fending off heavy pressure from Brodie Kostecki and Wood.

Despite early chaos that eliminated David Reynolds in his 500th career start on the opening lap, Allen held firm to become the first Supercars winner on the South Island.

Kostecki struck back on Saturday, dominating Race 11 to claim win number five of the season and extend his championship momentum, while pit lane drama denied Matt Payne a potential victory after a loose wheel ended his charge.

Payne wasted no time in responding emphatically in Race 12, converting frustration into victory in front of a passionate home crowd.

The Kiwi driver controlled the race from the front, finishing clear of Broc Feeney and James Golding to become the sixth race winner of the campaign.

Sunday’s finale saw Payne complete a dominant turnaround, leading a historic Grove Racing one-two finish ahead of Allen.

However, Feeney’s third place proved decisive, earning him both the championship lead, as well as the coveted Jason Richards Memorial Trophy (total points scored from both Taupō and Christchurch rounds) after late issues for Wood and a costly clash involving Kostecki.

Supercars announced a total three-day attendance of more than 65,000 fans.

A MUSTANG WITH HEART

TARQUIN’S INCREDIBLE DONATION

A Queensland resident’s kindhearted donation will have a tangible effect on those battling Youth Homelessness, as part of a recent car sale in partnership with charity Kids Under Cover and its Donate Your Car initiative.

When Sunshine State resident Tarquin purchased his 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1, it was a dream come true. He had the opportunity to buy the car from a seller in Queensland and jumped at the chance.

For Tarquin, the 1973 Mach 1 represents the end of an era. With oil prices rising in the United States shortly after, engine sizes began to shrink-making this model one of the last of the big, powerful Mustang engines.

His Mustang also carries another feature prized by enthusiasts: it’s a left-hand drive.

For many collectors, that authentic American configuration adds to the car’s appeal and keeps the genuine USA spirit of the Mustang alive.

“It’s the last of the real brute engines,” Tarquin said.

Despite owning such a special vehicle, Tarquin has always been quietly humble about it. Rather than taking it to shows

simpler - driving through country towns, enjoying the open road.

One of his favourite trips has been cruising up to the regional city of Bendigo, connecting with local Mustang clubs and heading out for relaxed country drives. In fact, he never even named the car – he says he didn’t want to get too attached.

Now, Tarquin has decided to pass the car on in a remarkable act of generosity.

After hearing about the Kids Under Cover Donate Your Car program, which sells donated vehicles to fund youth homelessness prevention, Tarquin knew it was something he wanted to support.

While working on another Mustang project and browsing the carsales.com.au website, he came across the program and decided his Mach 1 could help make a real difference.

Tarquin hopes his donation might inspire others to do the same.

CLUB DEVELOPMENT FUND OPENS FOR 2026 APPLICATIONS

MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE IT HAS OPENED APPLICATIONS FOR ROUND 1 OF THE 2026 SUPERCHEAP AUTO CLUB DEVELOPMENT FUND AND WILL CLOSE ON 22 JUNE.

Following successful rounds of funding from the Club Development Fund in 2025, proudly supported by Supercheap Auto, Motorsport Australia is continuing its support for affiliated grassroots clubs and their programs and infrastructure.

Since 2015, the fund has delivered more than $112,000 in grants for Motorsport Australia affiliated car clubs, assisting their objectives to elevate participation, improve safety, and upskill volunteers across program suites.

Similarly to the previous rounds of grants, there are three different streams clubs can apply for.

These types of projects fall within the project’s three main funding streams. Safety and Operational Equipment, Volunteer Upskilling and Club Capacity Building and Participation Programs

In 2026, there is a new update to Funding Area 3 known as “Innovative Participation & Pilot Programs”.

This category captures innovative participation projects which do not fit in the other categories of Funding Area 3.

This update allows more innovative and creative programs to be included within funding guidelines.

Applications must be submitted online prior to 22 June 2026, at 5:00pm AEST.

A recipient in the latest round of funding, the Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club designated allocated funds to fire and recovery crew equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, tow ropes and first aid and snake bite kits.

Club representative Pauline Lee stated the additional funds provided an important boost to obtaining new equipment.

“The Kempsey Macleay Off Road Club agreed to allocate and match funding from the Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund Grant towards fire and recovery crew equipment,” Lee said.

“The staff from within our Supercheap Auto store in Kempsey have been extremely co-operative and were pleased our club had received a grant for this important equipment purchase.”

Interested clubs looking to apply for the Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund can contact their Motorsport Australia Regional Development Executive to discuss a project prior to application.

All successful applicants will also receive a Supercheap Auto gift card to spend at any of its 280 stores in Australia.

In Round 2, 11 clubs received funding via the Supercheap Auto Club Development Fund to assist them in growing their projects. 20 clubs and organisations received funding for the whole of 2025.

New South Wales-based official Kynan Humphreys is another prime example of the impressive young officiating individuals Motorsport Australia has within its volunteer ranks, which was on full display at the recent Hi-Tech Oils Bathurst 6 Hour on the Easter Weekend.

Based out of Seaham, Kynan has been a dedicated Motorsport Australia official for almost 10 years, taking on a variety of roles at different circuit racing events.

Most recently, Kynan played a pivotal role managing a flag post at one of the busiest corners on the track at Mount Panorama.

Bathurst 6 Hour Secretary of the Event Janelle Orrocks was greatly impressed with Kynan’s professionalism during several high-pressure situations.

“There were several crashes on his corner, including a rollover that ended with a car on top of the tire wall,” Orrocks said.

“Kynan stayed calm and collected while under pressure, providing Race Control with clear information about each incident.”

Having first been accredited as an official back in 2017, Kynan has been touted as a promising, young official with plenty of capability to build upon his current skillset and continue to climb up the officials pathway.

Australian WRC2 competitor Taylor Gill and co-driver Daniel Brkic have made their WRC2 Tarmac debut, fighting back from puncture issues to complete the event in ninth place, one place behind Polish veteran Kajetan Kajetanowicz.

In their second WRC2 appearance for the year and first since Rally Sweden, Gill and Brkic battled early on in the rally during the Friday’s eight stages following their punctures, forcing them to drive aggressively on the second day.

“Our Croatia Rally had a bit of everything, but all in all, we’re pleased with what we accomplished over the three days,” Gill said.

“There’s no secret that we struggled to find the feeling on the Friday, and that showed on the stage times. Getting to grips with the tricky conditions wasn’t easy, and it was one of the hardest learning days we’ve had in a long time.”

Involving another eight stages on Day Two, Gill and Brkic topped the time sheet in Special Stage 11 (Generalski Stol - Zdihovo 1) by less than a second to secure their first ever WRC2 stage win - another milestone achieved for the Australian pair.

Firmly entrenched in the event’s top 10 after two days of rally, Gill and Brkic remained composed on Sunday, putting in the fourth, sixth, 12th and 12th fastest times in the final four stages.

“It wasn’t just the stage win, though. To be the second fastest WRC2 crew over the course of Saturday shows that we can sustain our pace on tarmac over more than just one stage.”

WHAT IS A COME & TRY DAY?

Taking the first step into organised competitive motorsport events can feel overwhelming with questions about licencing, vehicle requirements and safety standards top of mind.

This uncertainty creates barriers for people who are curious about getting involved in motorsport, but are unsure where to begin.

A Come and Try Day is designed to remove that uncertainty and provide an introduction to the sport within a controlled and welcoming environment.

Come and Try events are non-competitive and untimed, meaning there is no pressure to perform and no timing sheets at the end of the day.

The focus is on participation, enjoyment and learning.

In most cases, participants can use their own standard road car, provided it meets basic safety requirements which the event organiser can assist you with. This removes the need for excess car preparation and allows people to experience motorsport in a familiar vehicle. Some Come and Try Days, however, have loan cars provided to participants by event organisers.

Safety is central to every Come and Try Day with experienced officials and volunteers overseeing every aspect of the day.

To ensure expectations are clear and understood, drivers receive briefings on track procedures, flag signals and safe driving conduct before getting behind the wheel. Many events also provide instructors or experienced club members who can offer guidance in areas such as braking technique, cornering lines and vehicle control.

Motorsport Australia General Manager, Members, Clubs and Growth, Michael Melilli says the structured approach of a Come and Try Day ensures participants build skills progressively, while understanding the responsibilities that come with driving in a motorsport setting.

“Skill development is another key advantage when participating in a Come and Try event environment,” Melilli said.

“Experiencing a controlled motorsport environment helps drivers better understand their vehicle’s capabilities and limitations.

“Participants often leave with improved car control, spatial awareness and confidence behind the wheel.

“These benefits can extend beyond the track, contributing to more informed and capable everyday driving.”

Come and Try Days also play an important role in building community. They introduce newcomers to local car clubs and the broader motorsport network.

Meeting like-minded people, speaking with officials and learning about different event formats can open the door to further involvement, whether that be regular club days, officiating roles or competitive racing.

Importantly, Come and Try Days also offer a low-cost entry point.

Introductory licences are often available for singleday participation, keeping expenses manageable while still operating under nationally recognised regulations and world-class safety frameworks.

Come & Try Days use a $40 Introductory licence, with the necessary forms provided on the day by the event organiser.

If a participant is keen to do more, they can use that $40 as credit towards an annual licence.

By lowering financial and administrative barriers, these events create a clear and supportive pathway into Australian motorsport for drivers of all ages and experience levels.

KEMPSEY REACHES REMARKABLE 70-YEAR MILESTONE

One of New South Wales’ longest-running car clubs will soon celebrate a major milestone, as the Kempsey Sporting Car Club finalises preparations for its 70th year of operation in the Macleay Valley.

Seventy years after a small group of car enthusiasts gathered in Kempsey, New South Wales to form a club, the Kempsey Sporting Car Club continues to carve its place in regional motorsport driven by a selfless mantra of resilience, ingenuity and a refusal to stand still.

Based out of the hill climb track at Mount Cooperabung, members officially formed the club on 14 June 1956.

Club President Chris Seam stated the club has always provided a valuable contribution to the region in terms of community.

“We’re here for the long term, it’s as simple as that for our members,” Seam said.

The new club introduced annual subscriptions of one pound and one shilling for men and ten shillings and sixpence for women, while granting equal rights to both, an approach for membership well ahead of its time.

In the early years, the club quickly built momentum through reliability trials, tapping into the national excitement surrounding endurance events like the Redex and Ampol Round Australia Trials.

“Because of that commitment, I’d definitely say we have a positive motorsport community as a club, the Macleay region has always punched way above its weight in that regard.

“For many, many years the club has had lots and lots of motorsport. One example of that is when the club used to run drags on the public street. We came up with all sorts of ideas from decade to decade.

“We’re extremely proud of the part we have played in the wider motorsport landscape.”

Drivers tackled demanding courses before the club adapted, shifting to shorter afternoon and night trials that better suited local conditions.

At the same time, members organised gymkhanas at venues such as the old Kempsey Golf Course, Gladstone Racecourse and South West Rocks.

By the late 1950s, the club expanded into hillclimbs at Aldavilla, and soon after introduced sprints at North Street and Blackmans Point.

As momentum built, new regulations under the Speedways Act shut down motorsport on public roads, forcing the club into a critical turning point. Rather than folding, members got creative to continue their love of motorsport.

The club came up with a form of motorsport discipline named “mud scrambles”, a rough, crowdpleasing form of off road racing using standard road cars while raising funds. With the proceeds,

the club secured land and built its own sealed hillclimb track on Crescent Head Road in the late 1960s.

The 766-yard track quickly drew top drivers from across New South Wales, establishing Kempsey as a serious motorsport destination.

Adversity struck again as bushfires destroyed its safety fencing. Members rallied, holding working bees to rebuild, only to lose the facility entirely due to lease complications. Once again, the club adapted.

In 1979, it shifted focus to forest rallying, launching the Yowie Rally and building a strong presence throughout the 1980s with the Cavalcade series.

Yet by the end of the decade, participation dropped sharply. Membership dwindled, and in 1989 the club cancelled its rally. A small but determined core refused to let the club fade.

They rebuilt membership through the early 1990s, restoring momentum and reintroducing key events like the Railway Hotel Rally and the BP Clybucca Rally, which grew to Clubman status before rising costs forced its conclusion after 2007.

At the same time, the club continued to innovate. It helped run the first Macleay 1000 in 1981 and pioneered short-course off-road racing in the valley with an event at Yessabah in 1982. Through every era, however, grassroots motorsport has remained its backbone.

The club has consistently run gymkhanas, motorkhanas and khanacross events since its inception, offering an accessible entry point for drivers.

Regular khanacross events at Eungai since the mid-1990s have strengthened participation, particularly among juniors.

In 1995, the club reintroduced hill climbs at Mount Cooperabung, transforming a section of the old Pacific Highway into a competitive venue.

It expanded the track in 2004 and now holds multiple events each year, including rounds of the NSW Hillclimb Championship.

Its involvement in the Tri Challenge series alongside Newcastle and Tamworth further highlights its ongoing role in the sport and consistent sell-outs for the club’s Junior Development Program sessions are providing local youths with a fun avenue to motorsport.

70 years on, Seam added the Kempsey Sporting Car Club is leaning into its milestone this year, with a celebratory function scheduled for June to recognise the club’s achievement.

“In addition to an expanded logo for 2026 and consistent messaging around the milestone at events this year, the dinner will provide a great opportunity to reflect on the years gone by,” Seam added.

NEW SINGLE EVENT AUTO TEST

A new Single Event Auto Test Licence makes it easier and more affordable for people to participate in grassroots motorsport in a safe and supportive environment.

The new $45 licence helps Motorsport Australiaaffiliated car clubs to welcome newcomers by creating a simple pathway to grassroots motorsport at the community club level.

The Single Event Auto Test Licence applies to Motorkhana, Khanacross, Observed Section Trials, Touring Road Events (which contain no closed road sections and no speed sub-events), Touring Assemblies and other non-timed road events.

State & Competition Racing Manager Bruce Astbury said this reflects Motorsport Australia’s steps to remove barriers and make motorsport more accessible to new participants.

“Motorsport should be accessible to people of all experience levels, and this new licence creates a simple, affordable entry point for those looking to get started,” Astbury said.

“By removing some of the previous processes, this new licence will give more people the chance to experience grassroots motorsport at a community club level.

“It’s about building confidence, encouraging participation, and growing the sport from the ground up in a safe and supportive environment.”

Anyone keen to get involved can complete a Single Event Auto Test Licence application before or on the day of an event through the Motorsport Australia Member Portal. Alternatively, the relevant Single Event Auto Test Licence form can also be filled out.

Upon submission of an application, Motorsport Australia’s Member Services team will activate the licence for seven days.

If submitted on the day of the event, the licence may appear as under review for a short time. Applicants are approved to participate in the event in such cases, provided they have not disclosed any adverse medical conditions.

Who is the Single Event Auto Test Licence for?

First-time participants who want to experience an Auto Test event before committing to an annual licence.

What types of events does it cover?

Motorkhana, Khanacross, Observed Section Trials, Touring Road Events (which contain no closed road sections and no speed sub-events), Touring Assemblies and other non-timed road events, except where the event’s Supplementary Regulations mandate a higher grade of licence.

Can someone use multiple Single Event Auto Test Licences throughout the year?

No, it is intended that participants can only obtain one Single Event Auto Test Licence per year. Motorsport Australia Member Services will assist repeat applicants to upgrade to an annual Speed Licence as appropriate.

Do competitors still need to complete a medical or provide other documentation?

No medical is required for a Single Event Auto Test Licence, unless a participant declares an adverse medical condition. In that case, prior clearance must be obtained before participating. All applicants are required to complete the Health Statement on the application form.

Does the event organiser need to do anything differently?

Event organisers should ensure the correct form is used and that all sections are signed. Completed on-the-day applications must be submitted to Motorsport Australia Member Services post-event.

What happens if a participant wants to upgrade to an annual Speed Licence?

Participants can apply their $45 payment as credit toward an annual Speed Licence at any time.

This year’s annual Member Forum will be held via webinar at 7:00pm AEST on Thursday 30 April.

The Member Forum will take place via the Microsoft Teams webinar platform and is open to all Motorsport Australia licence holders, officials, clubs, and event organisers, and provides the opportunity to hear from the Board and management as they share highlights from 2025, financial results and strategic priorities for the year ahead.

The forum will commence at 7:00pm AEST, hosted by Motorsport Australia President Andrew Fraser, Vice President Margot Foster AM and CEO Josh Blanksby.

The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session.

Registrations can be made up to the webinar taking place. Once registered, members will be emailed a calendar invite and link to join the webinar on the night.

A field of 89 competitors competed for honours at the fourth annual Rob Roy Revival on 28-29 March.

Cars ran in eleven classes named after famous Australian hill climb tracks along with a regularity class, which provided for entertaining driving performances among the widest array of vehicles seen at any Revival edition.

Darren Visser claimed the prestigious outright win in the Bates Cycles Cyclo 500.

Visser recorded times of 27.19 seconds over the long track and 22.14 seconds on the older short track layout, giving a fastest combined total time of 49.33 seconds. He was the only driver to break the 50 second barrier in 2026.

The battle for second place was hard fought with four drivers in the 53 second bracket.

COMPETITORS TURN OUT FOR ROB ROY REVIVAL SPECTACULAR ROB

Wingett was recently invited to drive the Elfin in this year’s Goodwood Revival Festival and is raising funds to help transport the car to England.

Organised by the MG Car Club Victoria, the Rob Roy Revival sees invited historic racing cars competing on the hillclimb track along with a festival, fashion show and live music.

“This year we celebrated Italian Automotive Excellence,” MG Car Club Vice President Tony Lupton said.

“The great marques including Alfa Romeo, Maserati, Ferrari, Lancia and Fiat were all represented and the car clubs got right behind the event.

“We saw tremendous spirit for the entire motorsport community that attended over the weekend and the high standard of the event was on full display for everyone to see.”

As part of the event, Australian Champion Driver John Bowe AM was the Event Patron in 2026.

Robin Bailey took home the honours in a time of 53.09 seconds in his MGB GT V8, with Laurie Bennett third on 53.13 in the Elfin 600B. These efforts were narrowly followed by Graeme Raper’s George Reed Monoskate Special on 53.89 and Antonio Cafiso with 53.92 in the Penrite Elfin Clubman.

The fastest women’s time on the day was young star Abby Wingett in the Elfin Ford Formula Junior.

Bowe is also a Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia Champion and the MG Car Club joined with the PCFA to raise funds for prostate cancer awareness, research and support during this year’s Rob Roy Revival.

THREE-TIME MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA SUPERSPRINT CHAMPION AND 2022 MOTORSPORT AUSTRALIA HILL CLIMB CHAMPION DEAN TIGHE WILL GET TO TEST HIS SKILLS AGAINST SOME OF EUROPE’S ELITE HILL CLIMB COMPETITORS WHEN THE QUEENSLANDER TAKES PART IN THE BRITISH HILLCLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP FOR 2026.

Tighe, a second-generation hill climb competitor, announced in earlier this year that he will run at the Wiscombe Park Hillclimb for the 2026 campaign with the opening round scheduled for 25-26 April at Prescott.

Preparations are already underway for Tighe, briefly arriving in England in January to arrange accommodation, car storage, tow vehicle and trailer before returning to Australia.

Dean’s Empire Wraith, the machine he competes with locally in Australia, left his home shores in mid-December and arrived safely in the UK in early February.

At some venues this season, Dean will be competing in his late father’s tyre tracks.

In 1997, Ivan Tighe, a three-time Australian Hill Climb Champion in his own right, hired the exAndy Priaulx Pilbeam MP57-2 Hart that finished 4th in the 1994 British Hillclimb Championship.

Ivan competed at Shelsley Walsh (which was the 50th Anniversary of the British Hillclimb Championship), Loton Park and Prescott.

Dean made his UK hill climb debut at the Wiscombe Park event last July, sharing the Empire Wraith with William Loughridge. This was his only 2025 British Hillclimb Championship outing to date.

While accepting the Motorsport Australia Supersprint Championship Award at this year’s National Awards Gala, Tighe credited his wife Cheryl with playing an

important part to his successes in hill climb, as well as the decision to compete in the United Kingdom in 2026.

“My wife is instrumental in what we do, she’s generally my pit crew and the crew for the car. We run the car ourselves, so that generally works out well,” Tighe said.

“Hopefully we can take it to England and see what we can do there and we’re fast enough to be very annoying to the other competitors.”

Tighe will also have the luxury of being supported in the pits by close friend, fellow Aussie, and ex-Ferrari and Sauber F1 aerodynamicist Willem Toet, who designed the Wraith.

The 2026 British Hillclimb Championship will involve 26 rounds at 10 separate venues. At each event, there are two ‘Top Twelve’ run-offs with championship points going to the top 10.

The British Hillclimb Championship is organised and run by the British Automobile Racing Club on behalf of Motorsport UK.

MORRIE CHANDLER

1940 - 2026

Motorsport Australia is saddened by the passing of Morrie Chandler, a towering rally figure whose influence extended beyond his native New Zealand and resonated strongly within the Australian motorsport community.

Chandler’s career in the sport spanned decades, first as a competitor and later as a respected administrator and advocate.

Chandler was part of an era that helped elevate rallying in the Asia-Pacific region.

Beginning his career contesting hillclimbs with the Northern Sports Car Club, Chandler quickly rose to the role of Club President, before making his mark soon after at national level as a member of MotorSport New Zealand’s Executive Board and President from 1977 to 1998.

As a competitor, Chandler participated in the Rally of New Zealand annually from 1971 to 1983 and competed extensively in the New Zealand Rally Championship, achieving multiple top-ten finishes and class victories.

In this position, Chandler played an instrumental role in maintaining New Zealand’s position on the WRC calendar throughout the seventies and eighties, regularly also contesting the event himself.

His passion and professionalism to the sport ensured his legacy would endure long after

Motorsport Australia joins the wider motorsport community in honouring the life of Barry ‘Bo’ Seton, who passed away at the age of 89.

The 1965 Bathurst 500 winner was a respected competitor and revered figure in pit lanes across decades, and Seton’s legacy at Mount Panorama is enduring.

He made 22 starts in the Great Race between 1963 and 1984, highlighted by his famous victory in 1965 in a Ford Cortina alongside Midge Bosworth.

Beyond that triumph, Seton also claimed three class wins in 1976, 1977 and 1980 all alongside Don Smith, driving Ford Capris he prepared himself, further emphasising his mechanical skill and knowledge.

Seton was the father of two-time Supercars champion Glenn Seton and played a pivotal role in his son’s career.

Beyond the stages, Chandler played a pivotal role in strengthening ties between Australian and New Zealand rallying, fostering opportunities for drivers, teams and officials on both sides of the Tasman.

His work within rally governance helped shape the direction of the discipline, always with a focus on growth, safety and preserving the spirit of competition.

A former FIA Vice-President for sport and president of the FIA World Rally Championship Commission, Chandler played a major role in shaping international rally.

In 1997, Chandler was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in acknowledgement of his service to New Zealand and global motorsport.

Chandler was also named President d’Honneur of MotorSport New Zealand in 1998 and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Halberg Awards, New Zealand’s annual sports accolades, in 2018.

On behalf of Motorsport Australia, we extend our sincere condolences to Morrie’s family, friends, colleagues and the New Zealand motorsport community. He was 85.

The pair shared a memorable Bathurst moment in 1983, when Glenn made his debut alongside his father.

Barry helped establish Glenn Seton Racing in 1989, building engines and remaining a constant presence behind the scenes.

Family was at the heart of Seton’s life in motorsport. His grandson Aaron has continued the tradition, debuting at Bathurst in 2022, making the Setons one of the sport’s great multigenerational families with a combined 50 starts.

Barry Seton will be remembered not only for his achievements, but his lasting contribution to Australian racing.

Motorsport Australia extends its sincere condolences to the Seton family and friends.
