WELCOME FROM MA

Greetings from Motorcycling Australia (MA)! On behalf of MA, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the fans, riders, volunteers and officials attending the 2027 Shannons Australian Superbike Championship presented by Pirelli – which has made a landmark switch to a summer-based calendar for the first time since the championship’s inception in 1989. I’d like to welcome Shannons as the new naming rights sponsor for ASBK. There are insurance companies and then there’s Shannons – an institution in Australia and one that embodies passion, enthusiasm and six decades of unrivalled excellence. Shannons is an amazing success story, and we’re ecstatic that it will be partnering with the ASBK Championship to showcase Australia’s circuit racing talent in the best possible light. Motorcycling fans across the country are going to have access to the new Shannons SuperRig at every round of the ASBK Championship, along with community bike nights held at Shannons showrooms where you will be able to meet and greet some of the ASBK riders and teams. Shannons’ product catalogue includes motorcycle, car and home insurance, and it also actively supports a wide variety of two- and fourwheel events.

The 2027 ASBK Championship will feature six exhilarating rounds, taking in Phillip Island twice, Sydney Motorsport Park, The Bend, Queensland Raceway and One Raceway. For our Australian and international fans who are unable to be trackside, you won’t miss a moment of the action with our exclusive television coverage via our media partners SBS, Stan Sport Australia and ASBK TV. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all those involved in the 2027 ASBK Championship, including our fantastic volunteer marshals, the ASBK Senior Officials and staff, for their hard work in planning and executing another terrific showcase of Australia’s best circuit racing talent. We also extend our thanks to our riders, teams, crew and sponsors for their continued support of the championship. We are eagerly anticipating the crowning of the 2027 ASBK champions, and MA wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable season. Remember to always; Ride. Race. Enjoy! Peter Doyle CEO Motorcycling Australia

WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE? The Australian Superbike Championship SW-Motech Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor. Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations. While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.

“Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.” The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with race-specific items. “In a race situation, maximum stopping power is a priority, but brake wear is much less of a consideration than it would be on a road bike because components can be changed after every session,” Redding said.

“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” he said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it. “One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.” With the engine and gearbox both close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance. “Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and corner speeds. “Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.” In recent years, significant innovation has taken place in the electronic systems of race bikes. These systems have been adapted to provide functions such as fuelling, traction control, engine braking and antiwheelie control. There’s little doubt that electronics have provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders.

According to Redding, the bikes competing in the Shannons Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Pirelli, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally. “The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said. Despite the limited modifications allowed for Aussie-spec Superbikes, they still punch above their weight. At Phillip Island, for example, Harrison Voight’s lap record is 1:30.790, which isn’t far behind the World Superbike benchmark of 1:28.511. Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!

PHILLIP ISLAND PREVIEW Spring into Summer: Phillip Island heralds the start of new Shannons ASBK era

The trio is again expected to keep Voight on his toes alongside riders such as Josh Waters (DesmoSport Ducati), reigning No. 3 Cru Halliday (Stop

The 2027 Shannons Australian Superbike Championship presented by Pirelli (ASBK) will officially commence alongside the 2026 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island from October 23-25, with a huge field of 31 riders to contest the season opener in front of tens of thousands of spectators. Phillip Island will also be the dawn of a new ASBK era as it makes a groundbreaking switch to a summer-based calendar for the first time since the championship’s inception in 1989, with rounds at The Bend (November 13-15, 2026), One Raceway (December 4-6, 2026), Queensland Raceway (January 15-17, 2027) and Phillip Island (February 19-21, 2027) to follow before the grand finale at Sydney Motorsport Park (March 19-20, 2027).

and Seal Ducati), Glenn Allerton (Superbike Advocates Ducati) and Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team). Change of scenery for Waters and Co There’s intrigue aplenty ahead of Phillip Island, dominated by the crafty Waters. The 39-year-old, who has been a mainstay of the ASBK paddock for three decades, has made a shock switch to DesmoSport Ducati after five seasons with McMartin Racing where he will attempt to win a sixth Superbike title aboard the latest evolution of the Panigale V4 R.

The entry list for the season opener runs deep, featuring a tasty intersection of seasoned stars, rookies, emerging talent and internationals as ASBK competes for official points at the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix for only the second time in its 39-year history. Spectators attending the grand prix will have multiple opportunities to meet the ASBK stars at autograph sessions over the three days, including a special one at the Shannons SuperRig from 2:30-3:00pm on Saturday featuring defending ASBK champion Harrison Voight, Jonathan Nahlous, Jacob Roulstone and Josh Waters. Practice and qualifying for ASBK round one will be held on Friday, followed by two races on Saturday (12:10pm and 4:10pm) and one on Sunday (9am) – all 11-lappers. There will be live and exclusive coverage of all three ASBK races on Fox Sports and Kayo, followed by a follow-up highlights show on SBS Sport on Sunday, November 8 with additional interviews and behind-the-scenes features. Who can put the heat on Voight at Phillip Island? There are candidates galore lining up to put the squeeze on Voight, who will continue at McMartin Racing Ducati in 2027 as he begins his quest to become the seventh rider to win consecutive ASBK titles. Voight – the second youngest ASBK champion in history – always seems to find an extra step at the 4.448km grand prix circuit, which the lap record holder showed in February at the 2026 ASBK opener with two wins out of three races. Roulstone (Honda) was the other winner in February as he made a stunning ASBK debut, while Cameron Dunker (Blue Marlin Pools East Racing Yamaha) – currently blazing a trail in the 2026 Aussie Flat Track Nationals – and Nahlous (Yamaha Racing Team) were the other podium finishers.

20

John Lytras (Addicted to Track Yamaha), Jack Favelle (Apex Racing Team Honda) and Marcus Hamod (Unitek Racing Yamaha) will also be out to land some early blows in their new pastures, while Queenslander Broc Pearson makes a popular return to the ASBK paddock on a TeamBWR Honda after missing the 2026 season. Elsewhere, 18-year-old Jayden Martin (Yamaha) represents a new breed of ASBK aspirants as he brings his dominant West Aussie form onto the national arena – although he did recently win multiple titles at the 2026 Australian Historic Championship in his home state – while the international flavour will be courtesy of New Zealanders Luca Durning (Alex Racing Team BMW), Richard Markham-Barrett (Addicted to Track BMW) and Morgan McLaren-Wood (Blue Marlin Pools East Yamaha) and Japan’s Kota Higuchi (Suzuki). Who’s going to come out on top in the high-stakes opener?
