The 2026-2027 ASBK summer calendar will span six rounds from October 2026 to March 2027, so it’s certainly going to be a huge 12 months for the ASBK paddock.

WHAT IS AN ASBK-SPEC SUPERBIKE?

The Australian Superbike Championship SW-Motech Superbike class features bikes that are not only fast, spectacular and sound amazing but are also easily accessible to the general public as they are very similar to those available for purchase off the showroom floor.

Engine capacities and minimum weights for ASBK machines are capped at 1000cc and 168kg for four-cylinder machines, and 1300cc and 172kg for two- and three-cylinder configurations.

While engine modifications for race versions are limited, Yamaha Racing Team manager, John Redding, says the engine is not a primary focus for performance gains in the Superbike class.

“To get a performance improvement of 10 per cent over the standard output is about as much as you can expect,” he said. “You can increase the compression ratio, fine-tune the degrees on the valve seats and adjust the cam timing for different tracks, but that’s about it.

“One of the advantages of keeping the engines relatively standard is they are cheap to maintain and last a while between rebuilds.”

With the engine and gearbox both close to standard, teams have turned to other aspects of Superbikes to improve their performance.

“Suspension has been a major area of development on the race-spec bikes,” Redding said. “The suspension on a street bike is compromised for ride comfort, but on a racetrack comfort isn’t a factor – it’s all about optimising the handling and corner speeds.

“Compared to the street version of the bike, the race bike will have different shock absorbers and fork internals, providing a much more adjustable setup.”

In recent years, significant innovation has taken place in the electronic systems of race bikes. These systems have been adapted to provide functions such as fuelling, traction control, engine braking and antiwheelie control.

There’s little doubt that electronics have provided both the biggest challenge – and opportunity – to teams and riders.

“Electronics are one of the most important areas of development and something that has become a critical factor in determining the speed that can be achieved by different bikes,” Redding said. “There are significant advantages to be gained in having the best electronic set-up.”

The brakes on racing bikes are also upgraded, with items such as the master cylinder, brake lines, pads and discs all being replaced with race-specific items.

“In a race situation, maximum stopping power is a priority, but brake wear is much less of a consideration than it would be on a road bike because components can be changed after every session,” Redding said.

According to Redding, the bikes competing in the Penrite Australian Superbike Championship, presented by Pirelli, are more similar to road bikes than those in other Superbike championships globally.

“The permitted modifications are much more limited here in Australia, which has the advantage of containing costs,” Redding said.

Despite the limited modifications allowed for Aussie-spec Superbikes, they still punch above their weight. At Phillip Island, for example, Harrison Voight’s lap record is 1:30.790, which isn’t far behind the World Superbike benchmark of 1:28.564.

Not bad for a lightly modified road bike!

PHILLIP ISLAND REVIEW/SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK PREVIEW

Jacob Roulstone and Harrison Voight were the stars of the show as round one of the 2026 Penrite Australian Superbike Championship presented by Pirelli (ASBK) wound up at Phillip Island on Sunday, February 22.

Their victories in the two SW-Motech Superbike races were at opposite ends of the intensity spectrum: rookie Roulstone (Motocity Honda) catapulting from third on the final lap to win race two, and then an imperious Voight putting the field to the sword in race three.

Voight was the overall round winner with his 1-4-1 scorecard, and he’ll take a 6pt (68 to 62) lead over Roulstone into round two at Sydney Motorsport Park on March 27-28, followed by Cameron Dunker (Blue Marlin Pools Racing Yamaha, 56pts).

“I’m chuffed with how things have gone this weekend,” said Voight. “My pace was great, and in race two I got close to the lap record I set two years ago.

He led until the final lap, with Glenn Allerton (Superbike Advocates Racing Ducati) applying the initial pressure before Waters was swamped by Dunker (turn two) and Roulstone (turn four) on the final lap.

Roulstone then performed a slick move on Dunker after the exit of turn 10 to win his maiden ASBK Superbike race in just his second start.

“I was a bit of a softie in race two in the mixed conditions, but I was also thinking about the championship. Overall, a fantastic start to the year.”

The Kawasaki Supersport/Supersport Next Gen and Race and Road Supersport 300 classes also concluded their race one programs at Phillip Island today, with Olly Simpson (DesmoSport Ducati) and Tara Morrison (Kawasaki) the victors – Simpson’s by just millimetres over Tom Toparis (Stop and Seal Ducati) in a grandstand finish.

SW-MOTECH SUPERBIKE

Light drizzle played its part in both 11-lap SW-Motech Superbike races today – at the start of this morning’s and at the tail end of the second.

After riders flirted with wets in the first, slicks were hastily fitted after the sighting lap, and it was defending champion Josh Waters (McMartin Racing Ducati) who got the best of the start as he attempted to win an amazing 21st Superbike race on at Phillip Island.

Waters held on for third ahead of Voight, Allerton, Anthony West (DesmoSport Ducati), Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team) and Cru Halliday (Stop and Seal Ducati).

Voight was unstoppable in race two, breaking ranks from the start without even allowing the pack to place a modicum of pressure on him.

PHILLIP ISLAND GP CIRCUIT, VIC

And once he reeled off a searing 1:30.855 on lap three – just shy of his 1:30.790 circuit benchmark – the issue was beyond doubt.

After building such a huge gap, he had the scope to keep his powder dry as the drizzle hit in the final few laps. It was Voight’s third Superbike win at Phillip Island in just seven starts.

Meanwhile, there was plenty of jockeying going on behind with Roulstone, West, Jonathan Nahlous (Yamaha Racing Team) and Waters all spending time in the top three.

Roulstone ran off on lap eight to fall back to seventh, but he rallied to finish the race in fourth behind Voight, Nahlous and Dunker.

After round one of five, Waters is fourth in the standings on 50pts from Nahlous (47pts), West (45pts), Allerton (42pts) and Jones (42pts).

KAWASAKI SUPERSPORT AND SUPERSPORT NEXT GEN

The final Kawasaki Supersport/Superport Next Gen race was declared wet, but it was like a dry affair as the leading riders put on their combative faces from the outset of the 10-lapper.

And what an epic finish, with Olly Simpson (DesmoSport) drafting past fellow Ducati rider Tom Toparis (Stop and Seal) at the death knell to win by just 0.001 seconds.

About 30 seconds earlier, Simpson looked to have scuppered his chances of winning when he nearly crashed at turn nine, with Toparis immediately seizing his opportunity to hit the lead.

But Simpson wasn’t done, and he quickly regrouped to score a pulsating victory – his second of the weekend.

Tom Edwards (BCperformance Kawasaki) was only a whisker behind in third from early race leader Jake Farnsworth (Yamaha), Hayden Nelson (BCperformance Kawasaki), Will Nassif (Gow Racing Yamaha), race two winner Roberto Tamburini (Addicted to Track Yamaha) and rookie Ghage Plowman (Yamaha).

LAST TIME OUT (CONT.)

After round one, Tamburini leads the Supersport class on 69pts from Valentino Knezovic (Addicted to Track Yamaha, 54pts) and Scott Nicholson (TeamBWR Yamaha, 39pts), and in Supersport Next Gen it’s Simpson (70pts) from Edwards (61pts) and Nelson (56pts).

It’s only likely to be a cameo for Tamburini, though, but the veteran is planning to return for the 2027 ASBK Championship when it switches to a summer-based calendar.

RACE and ROAD SUPERSPORT 300

Morning drizzle provided Sketchy conditions for the final RACE and ROAD Supersport 300 battle – but that was only of minor nuisance value for Tara Morrison (Kawasaki) who romped to a three-second start to finish victory in the shortened four-lapper.

It was the South Aussie’s third win at Phillip Island in the last nine races, as she leapfrogged up to third in the Supersport 300 standings on 52pts ahead of round two at Sydney Motorsport Park on March 27-28. Tyler King (Kawasaki, 55pts) leads the battle of the fast-twitch brigade from Jordy Simpson (Yamaha, 54pts).

Lincoln Knight (Yamaha) was second in race three from Simpson – completing a trio of third places for the reigning No. 2 – with Phoenix O’Brien (Yamaha), Tom Nicolson (Kawasaki) and Jake Senior (Yamaha) in positions 4-6 among the 27 finishers.

Riley Nauta and King, who won races one and two respectively, were well back in 18th and 11th respectively.

Nauta (48pts) is fifth in the standings, behind O’Brien (49pts) and ahead of Senior (45pts).

ROUND 2 PREVIEW

SYDNEY MOTORSPORT PARK PREVIEW

For the first time since 2023, five-time Australian Superbike Champion Josh Waters (McMartin Racing Ducati) will not be leading the championship heading to the second round at Sydney Motorsport Park (SMSP).

He currently sits in the unaccustomed position of fourth in the SW-Motech Superbike class after three dramatic races at Phillip Island’s season opener in late February.

Instead, for the first time in the ASBK history, there are two championship rookies leading the way, with Harrison Voight (McMartin Racing Ducati) and Jacob Roulstone (Motocity Honda) in first and second ahead of Cameron Dunker (Blue Marli Pools East Racing Yamaha).

While Voight has competed as a wildcard at selected rounds in previous seasons, 2026 is the first year he will contest the championship full-time.

Meanwhile, former Moto3 rider Roulstone is a rookie in the purest form, and he will also compete in the 2026 Moto2 European title alongside Voight and another ASBK regular, Jonathan Nahlous.

Nahlous is star turn, too, which means that ASBK is well and truly going through a generational change – but it remains to be seen if that amounts to a complete changing of the guard with seasoned veterans like Waters, who claimed a clean sweep at SMSP in 2025, Mike Jones (Yamaha Racing Team) and Anthony West

(DesmoSport Ducati) still mightily competitive. Glenn Allerton (Superbike Advocates Racing Ducati) also continues to keep the youngsters honest.

Just behind Waters in the standings is 2025 Rookie of the Year, Nahlous, the new kid in the Yamaha Racing Team alongside three-time champion, Jones. Nahlous has come to grips with the team very quickly and established a new outright and ASBK-spec Superbike lap record at SMSP only a few weeks ago.

Other riders who will be in the SMSP mix include circuit specialist, Cru Haliday (Stop and Seal Ducati), Jack Favelle (Addicted to Track Yamaha), Marcus Hamod (Motocity Honda) and Josh Newman (Superbike Advocates Racing Ducati).

Twenty-three riders will contest the two 13-lap races at SMSP.

KAWASAKI SUPERSPORT /SUPERSPORT NEXT GEN

Again, it will be two championships in one with Kawasaki Supersport and Kawasaki Supersport Next Gen on the track together at SMSP.

Evergreen Italian Roberto Tamburini (Addicted to Track Yamaha) was a wildcard at Phillip Island and took the honours in Supersport with pole, two wins and a third.

That’s the season done for Tamburini, however, and he’ll soon tumble down the standings as riders like

Nicholson (Team BWR Yamaha), Will Nassif (Gow Moto Yamaha) and Sydneysider Jake Farnsworth (Worth Racing Yamaha) get to work.

And keep an eye on class rookies Ghage Plowman (Yamaha) and Marianos Nikolis (MotoGo Yamaha) who will be more prepared for battle after the first round.

In Next Gen, it’s going to be an entertaining multicylinder show as the BCperformance Kawasaki ZX-R6s of Tom Edwards and Hayden Nelson line up against Tom Toparis (Stop and Seal) and Olly Simpson (DesmoSport) on their Ducati V2s and the three-cylinder Triumph Street Triple 765 RS of Jacob Hatch.

That’s the primary reason the Supersport Next Gen class was introduced: to allow a wider variety of manufacturers and models to compete in the ASBK Championship.

Race and Road Supersport 300 and Shop Yamaha R3 Cup Three different winners at the opening round of Race and Road Supersport 300 confirmed the unpredictability of this exciting feeder class.

Tyler King (Kawasaki) claimed his first win in the class, while Tara Morrison (Kawasaki) stunned everyone with her runaway win in the wet conditions of the final race.

Riley Nauta claimed the first race win of the year on his Kawasaki, but such is the nature of the class there is no certainty that they will taste victory in Sydney as there are plenty more lining up to be in the spotlight.

West Australian rookie Orlando Peovitis (Kawasaki) claimed pole position at Phillip Island and went remarkably close to scoring his first podium after graduating from the FIM Oceania Junior Cup.

Elder statesman of the class, Jake Senior (Yamaha), will certainly be a contender on his home track and his young teammate Phoenix O’Brien (Yamaha) will be keen to improve on his 4-6-4 placings at Phillip Island.

The best form guide to follow is that there are 26 riders in the class and any of them could end up with a podium!

Meanwhile, as the title suggests, the Shop Yamaha R3 Cup is for riders on the fleet-footed Yamaha YZF-R3. SMSP is round one, so too early for a form guide, but O’Brien and Senior would have to be early favourites for a win along with the experienced and ever smiling Jordy Simpson.

BLU CRU OCEANIA JUNIOR CUP

This weekend is also the season opener for the 2026 BLU CRU Oceania Junior Cup, with a smattering of kids from last year joined by a new batch of hopeful future champions.

As usual, it will be helter-skelter racing as the riders in the grassroots academy go about learning and honing their craft. Hang on for the ride!

With the eighth season of BLU CRU Oceania Junior Cup (OJC) competition just around the corner, 17 riders have locked in places for 2026 as the quest to unearth the next wave of aspiring circuit racing stars begins in earnest.

The 2026 OJC roster – from all parts of Australia and New Zealand – includes 11 rookies, while the balance is returning to the academy which provides young riders with everything they need to develop skills, race craft, confidence and professionalism: identical Yamaha YZF-R15s, LS2 helmets, Ricondi riding gear and bespoke coaching led by former 500 GP race winner Garry McCoy.

The developmental credentials of the OJC have consistently been highlighted since the category’s inception in 2019, providing a rock-solid platform for riders to embrace the challenge – and turn heads –in other circuit racing series across the globe.

The 2026 OJC season will commence under lights at Sydney Motorsport Park on March 27-28 before visiting The Bend (May 1-3), Morgan Park Raceway (May 29-31) and Queensland Raceway (June 26-28) – all in conjunction with the 2026 Penrite Australian Superbike Championship presented by Pirelli (ASBK).

This world class facility will travel to each round of the ASBK series and will provide an onsite Emergency Medical centre, Physiotherapy facility, plus Mobile Command Unit for the MA RACESAFE Medical Team.

YELLOW FLAG

Waved - danger ahead Riders must slow down and be prepared to stop. Overtaking is forbidden.

BLUE FLAG

Waved - flag indicate a rider that they are about to be overtaken.

CHEQUERED FLAG

Waved - race or practice session is over.

BLACK FLAG

Riders whose number is shown with the flag must stop at the pits on the next lap.

RED FLAG

Waved - race or practice interrupted. Riders must return to the pits.

GREEN FLAG

The track is clear.

YELLOW & RED STRIPED FLAG

Deterioration of adhesion to the track.
