… they never really cool off. The same blanket of sultry humidity that engulfs the city by day sticks around for the after party, only this time it’s joined by a circus of neon lights and bars that close way past my bedtime (I’m in bed by nine so I’ve not seen said circus – I’m merely going by what Alice and Elise tell me). While the days in Dubai might be hot, hot, hot, the nights are just as scorching. A hot, sticky, anything-can-happen playground for the adventurous. A night that starts with a moonlit swim at Aura somehow finds you sipping cocktails in new speakeasy in Downtown Dubai. Or what began as dinner and a show in Taikun could turn into an all-out rave in a new club in JVC. Of course, our city has grown up from its party-tillyou-die reputation, and while you can definitely still have your rage-till-the-early-hours nights, you can also (safely) walk on the edge of a skyscraper, slide your way around a moonlit waterpark, or eat a five-star dinner at midnight. Outrageously good truffle pizza at… The Artisan

Pizza – even great pizza – is subjective. You may like a certain pizza more than another, but I don’t think you’ll find fault with the taste of the tartufo nero (Dhs210) at The Artisan. Shaved truffle from Piemonte and 72-hour fermented dough are key players to this indulgent dish, with a crisp-meets-moreish dough that cradles an ooey gooey lava of the good stuff. The restaurant today stands on key pillars: championing and supporting local farmers, growers and fishermen’s produce; managing our waste output by creating a waste officer role who consolidates our waste data; creating a platform for sustainability discussions with like-minded individuals and organisations; and remaining committed to reducing our carbon emissions with full and transparent report detailing the impact of our operations and production lifecycle on the environment. You have become one of the city’s brightest F&B stars. How has that journey been? I’m very proud of where I am today and grateful for

We are proud of what we have achieved so far, and are embracing the evolution

DIFC and Dubai are extremely competitive markets for restaurants; without the right positioning, a long-term vision and setting the right expectations, operators may set themselves up for disappointments. Since our inception, we have set out to create a space that provides quality food, drink, and service at value. Our guests understood this and many of them have remained loyal to this day. We wanted to stay true to our home, represent the resources we have access to here, with no frills and a big focus on our community.

the platform I call Boca. I believe in what we have and that with the local resources, we can create homegrown concepts that can rival global and established concepts. I am obsessed with ridding the industry of unnecessary fluff and developing food and drink concepts based on the framework of sustainability.

This is truly a journey, and I’m learning to enjoy it with the vision we have today, but also understanding that I do not have all the answers right now. What do you think about Michelin finally launching a Dubai guide? It’s good news. At last, the myriad restaurants that prepare exceptional cuisine, regardless of size or category, are being recognised. This is perhaps what makes these guides so unique: their broad representation of unique establishments – something that the UAE has no shortage of. We’re curious to see where we stand today compared with our counterparts. n June 21, the great and the good of hospitality gathered in Dubai Opera to discover which establishments were to be bestowed with stars in the first ever Dubai Michelin Guide. After months of speculation, tension and excitement, the list was revealed by Gwendal Poullennic, the international director of the Michelin Guide. Speaking about Dubai’s dining scene, Poullennic said: “This very first Dubai selection of restaurants marks a historical moment for the Michelin Guide and the Middle East. “What makes Dubai’s culinary landscape so distinctive is its reflection of the more than 200 nationalities that

call the city home, delivering an epicurean kaleidoscope. One thing all the restaurants in this fast-paced dynamic and elegant city have in common is they are brimming with passion and enthusiasm. Today, Dubai is settled as an inspiring gastronomic destination and we have no doubts that gourmets from all over the world will be seduced by its very unique energy,” he added. Dubai is the 36th destination to be covered by the Michelin Guide and a total of 69 restaurants are included in the first edition of the Michelin Guide Dubai, nine of which received one prestigious star each, while two received two stars. The restaurant serves up food cooked on fire and uses ingredients as locally as possible. Their ‘Waste Not’ dinners offer eight to 10 courses of would-be waste products, saved over the previous months.

hile we all know that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, this is one case in which evaluating something based on its appearance is not only accepted, but encouraged. From the outside, the Mohammed bin Rashid Library is an architectural marvel, shaped like an open book on a stand or rehl (a traditional lectern that holds the Quran); inside its appearance resembles a more standard library – albeit an enormous one – with several floors dedicated to various genres, as well as conference rooms and exhibitions. All told, it has the capacity to hold more than one million print and digital books. Turn the page for a look inside…

Here you’ll find the Periodicals Library, complete with international newspapers and magazines; the General Library; the Children’s Library (note children must be over five years old to enter the entire library), with interactive books, tent spaces to read, and iPads available for loan; a large auditorium, which will screen documentaries and indie films over the coming month; and a café.

The first floor comprises three libraries in one: The Media and Arts library, with books on architecture, design, history of art, music and fashion, as well as workshops and theatrical screenings. Then there’s the Maps and Atlases Library and the Young Adult’s Library.

A Monaco export lands in Jumeirah Al Naseem urtle Lagoon continues to solidify its status as a premium restaurant hotspot with recent additions Beefbar and Mayabay. The latter opened in late May and is the third Dubai concept by restaurant group Orange Hospitality, joining Il Borro Tuscan Bistro and Alici. Veering away from the Italian cuisine that the group is known for, Mayabay comes imported from Monaco, offering primarily Thai and Japanese cuisine with some neighbouring Asian influences also in the mix. The venue was previously occupied by Katsuya, although you’d never be able to tell – it’s undergone a complete redesign. Currently only open for dinner, we arrive on a busy Sunday evening and are sat directly under a live DJ that plays on the mezzanine level. A large open kitchen adjoins the front and back sections of the restaurant, where plush red chairs sit around wooden tables under glitzy chandeliers or more abstract light fixtures. To call the hardback book sitting on the table a menu would be an understatement – this is a 100+ page guide to pan-Asian cuisine. Choosing from it is a little overwhelming but seeing not just descriptions for dishes but images too certainly helped us to make some informed decisions. We ordered tuna sashimi (Dhs105) – seven slices of delicately seared tuna carefully glazed in smoked soy sauce to give them a tasty pang of flavour. The beef tataki (Dhs80), also sliced into seven (not ideal for hungry couples), was tender with some intense marbling and a wafer of crunchy garlic on each piece. If you’re going to try just one of the many sushi options on offer, make it the ebi maki (Dhs60). It features delicately

(Dhs75). The chocolate is organic and rich with a high cocoa content, ideal for those with less of a sweet tooth. Paired with it is a vanilla bean ice cream, and the combination of hot and cold melts together perfectly. While the atmosphere and setting are already hitting the mark, we’re looking forward to seeing how the menu develops and refines as time goes on. battered shrimp tempura, which is topped with thinly sliced avocado and mango. This roll offers a balanced ratio of savoury to sweet and soft to crunchy that keeps us reaching back for more. Another glance at the menu and we’re lost again, landing on an old Dubai favourite – the miso black cod (Dhs185). Served in a leaf with a drizzle of honey, it’s a tasty but meaty fish, lacking the buttery melt-in-the-mouth texture we’d hoped for. The prawn pad Thai (Dhs125) with a generous portion of traditional flat noodles, large curly prawns and a layer of crunch provided by chopped peanuts and bean sprouts. It’s authentic and enjoyable, but doesn’t wow. Desserts are an adventure, with a Dhs70 cloud of candy floss on the menu. We play it safe and opt for the chocolate souffle

THE ARTISAN

Exceedingly good Italian that deserves a spot on your ‘favourite restaurants’ list n Dubai, size matters when sometimes it shouldn’t. Restaurant investors eye up large square footage, assuming the very key to success is a huge floor plan. More tables means more customers, means more money. In theory, that would be correct, but space isn’t everything. Aside from mediocre food, there’s nothing worse than an empty, soleless restaurant, especially a very large, empty and soleless restaurant. The Artisan doesn’t have this issue. It’s a perfectly formed, intimate venue inside

the Waldorf Astoria in DIFC. It’s classy, without showing off and busy without being crammed. The service is attentive, the décor elegant and romantic, and the drinks thoughtful and refined. The food is also exceedingly good. Key ingredients are allowed to sing without a chorus of 10 other flavours fighting for attention. We devoured the impossibly thin Fassona beef carpaccio (Dhs125), dressed with rocket, shavings of Parmigiano Reggiano, sweet Datterino tomatoes and lemon dressing. You must also try the tartufo nero (Dhs210). Using truffle from Piemonte and 72-hour fermented dough, it’s a masterpiece in Italian cuisine, and the finest example of elegant pizza done right. Pasta courses are another triumph. The paccheri – freshly made XXL penneshaped pasta tubes (Dhs140) – slathered

in Tuscan pecorino fondue and thymeflavoured beef ragu is rich and meaty – and a signature dish at The Artisan – but the pumpkin-stuffed agnolotti (Dhs120) is very worthy equal. We’ve had many a bland vegetable-filled pasta, but this agnolotti is bursting with a silky, sageinfused purée. Dessert for us was an old faithful – a tiramisu (Dhs55) – which could have done without the blanket of cacao nibs, but by that point we were sold. Gastropub Crafty Fox opens in Jumeirah Golf Estates Back in April, we learned that two new restaurants were headed to JGE, and now the first of them – a cool new gastropub – has opened its doors. Called Crafty Fox, the gastropub and sports bar has replaced Nassau in the club house. You’ll find a selection of classic bar bites from Scotch egg and white bait to fully-loaded nachos, cheeseboards and platters of cold cuts. An extensive list of mains includes cottage pie, lamb rack, fish ‘n’ chips, steaks and a dedicated non-halal section. The Pods VIP-style dining for all on Bluewaters

vegetables (Dhs60) were more chewy than crispy. The mains are – rightly so – the stars of the show. The ocean platter (Dhs275) was filled with sushi. Lots of sushi. The platter has 10 different types of sashimi and nigiri. While there’s enough for everyone, the main sharing that will be done is on social, as it’s served with a side of dry ice theatrics. The favourite was the beef rendang curry (Dhs160). The meat was so slow cooked, it was just the right level of soft, meaning it had absorbed all the spicy and sweet flavours. While a side of greens might not be first on your list, the gai lan (Chinese broccoli; Dhs75) was surprisingly good. The mochi desserts (Dhs50) were texture-tastic, as they were soft and smooth in all the right places. And, as they were sliced in half, it meant we could share the flavours, which included coconut, green tea and salted caramel. While this isn’t a cheap dinner, as the cheapest stir fries and noodles are

Dhs120, and there is a minimum spend of Dhs250 per person, we are sure it will be a memorable dining experience. If you want to extend the fun, pre- or post-Pods, you can visit the bar, which has plush sofas and pretty foliage. The phrase Instagrammable is as common as an influencer in Dubai, but The Pods have already earned a place in Dubai’s Insta hall of fame. It has the kind of setting that would make Love is Blind producers jealous, especially due to its swoon-worthy views over Dubai Marina and The Palm Jumeirah. Plus, everything is under your control – lighting, temperature (great during summer) and exactly when you would like a waiter (who comes smiling and swiftly). hen a restaurant has so much hype, it can be a blessing and a curse. The expectations around Bluewaters’ The Pods have been so high, thanks to its private dining pods, that upon opening it has become one of the most in-demand dining experiences in Dubai. The USP is in the name: there are 22 pods in three different sizes, which can seat up to six, eight and 14 people. As the pods tick so many boxes – business meetings, family get togethers, birthday parties, romantic dinners and basically anything where you want privacy – you can see why this would be popular, but we imagine that the creators just didn’t anticipate how popular. It was easy to spot the restaurant as you follow the crowds or, more precisely, the camera phones. The Pods have the kind of attention reserved for a tourist attraction, and it has already turned into a dining destination. It’s easy to write The Pods off as a gimmick, but it’s one that is easy to get behind when the food – which is why we’re here, after all – is actually good. Given the adventurous dining concept, the pan-Asian menu plays it safe with staples ranging from Chinese to Japanese dishes and caters to all your dim sum and sushi needs. The recommended starters were hit and miss. The Korean chicken bao (Dhs120) had a flavourful filling with crispy chicken, Asian slaw and gochujang mayonnaise, but the bun was disappointingly more thick than fluffy. ROARING RABBIT

A casual gastropub with potential... he impressive Taj Exotica Resort & Spa may have its roots firmly in India, but this new resort has a range of enticing international dining outlets, including a classic English pub with a wonderful name: Roaring Rabbit. The restaurant shows off eclectic modern interiors with the Roaring Rabbit making cameo appearances throughout the gastropub. There are bunny prints on the walls and ceramic rabbits dotted about the entrance. We started with barbecue wings (Dhs85) drenched in a smokey sauce. The meat was so tender it fell off the bone at the slightest touch, and was paired with a green chutney, though we prepared it without. The chicken tikka (Dhs85) ticked off the necessary components that this dish should showcase: earthy flavours, spicy with just the right amount of char. For mains, we split a 350g wagyu ribeye (Dhs330) and opted for two sauces – pepper and mushroom. Requested medium-rare, it came perfectly pink inside with a layer of juicy fat on one edge. The steak fries earned the dish more top points. The delicious chicken Kiev burger (Dhs95) meanwhile, arrived in slidersized buns with crunchy chicken slathered in chipotle mayo, cornichon (pickled cucumber) and a nutty yet salty, melted gruyère cheese.

To finish, a British favourite, sticky chocolate and date pudding (Dhs55) with toffee sauce and vanilla bean ice cream. The pudding had a soft cake-like texture and was served on a hot plate. So good we ordered more ice cream to see it off. Ironically, the atmosphere at Roaring Rabbit is more Rustling Rabbit, at least for now. Perhaps word has not quite got out about the quality of food here. But there’s bags of potential thanks to its tasty, approachable menu and friendly staff. The legendary British chef chews the fat at his new Jamie’s Italian in Dubai Mall We already have Jamie Oliver’s Pizzerias and Italians across the Middle East, but we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to open a restaurant in the world-famous Dubai Mall. What an iconic location. We’ve also got a number of other new sites lined up, too. I’d say we’re most known for our silky fresh pasta. We make it on-site from scratch, every day. The menu really is a celebration of the Italian way of eating, so there are plenty of opportunities to share, which is exactly the way I like it. If I was dining with Jools [Jamie’s wife] right now? We’d kick things off with a beautiful antipasti plank – they’re a bit like an Italian picnic – loaded with bites from different Italian regions. We’d then pick a couple of pastas to share, followed by the beautiful fish stew and the rocket salad. You’ve made me hungry just thinking about it! Who wouldn’t jump at the chance to have a restaurant in the biggest mall in the world? The space is beautiful with room for 180 covers and a gorgeous ‘pasta theatre’ to showcase what we do best. Mexican classics and fiesta fun down by the beach

y day, Pavilion at The Beach is a calm venue. By late afternoon – Saturdays in particular – it’s buzzing. And that’s all down to La Mezcaleria, now bringing its second branch of the successful Mexican-inspired magic to JBR. Inside, it’s a fun and relaxed atmosphere with jungle chic interiors featuring bright green walls and even brighter plants. We nabbed a table that looked out onto a double-tap-worthy view of Ain Dubai. You’ll be sitting comfortably in a plush seat for the next four hours as a gamut of Mexican classics are brought directly to your table. Starters feature salmon tacos, chicken and cheese quesadillas, while mains include tenderloin, grilled chicken, sea bass and penne arabiatta. The sea bass was served with a tangy ratatouille, fresh asparagus, zingy lemon beurre blanc, while the pasta was simple yet skillfully executed with roma tomato marinara, chili flakes and basil. You’ll wash this little lot down with house wines, spirits and cocktails, which include peach bellinis, refreshing sangrias

and rather strong lemon margaritas. The whole space does feel on the smaller side, but the party is spread across two floors and an outdoor terrace. While it welcomes larger groups, it’s all a little ad hoc as smaller tables are pushed together. If you’re after a quiet, let’s catch-up and chat brunch, this is not the place. The atmosphere (and volume) gets turned up several notches, as desserts are followed by dancing. Head bartender at Masti I started thinking about bartending as a career when a friend showed me a video of Alexander Shtifanov. His incredible work inspired me to start my career as a flair bartender. I eventually moved to mixology. My favourite bar in the world is RE in Sydney, Australia, but I’ve never been there. I love their concept. It’s fully sustainable, and I believe sustainability is essential in our lives. It protects our ecosystem and preserves natural resources. I work sustainably as much as possible. I believe every small step can significantly impact our future. As someone who craves Asian flavours my favourite go-to bar in Dubai is Roka. They present a spectacular selection of crafted cocktails with unique Asian flavours. The best part about being a bartender in Dubai is working with various nationalities. By learning about diverse cultures, we can find unique ingredients from their region and create unique drinks. It makes me feel proud when I see our signature cocktails on every table at Masti. Seeing our guests enjoying the experience means so much. My favourite cocktail? Our Noo-Groni. This is a take on the Negroni cocktail, and it’s an addition of a homemade “Nootropic” blend made of unique ayurvedic botanicals. q @mastidubai

A hip new bar that’s big on music and bold on drinks Electric Pawn Shop bills itself as a ‘hedonist, exotic, dystopian counterculture Asian Mediterranean bar restaurant inspired by the ‘70s Chinatown of New York.’ Once you’ve chewed on that eyebrowraising depiction for a hot minute, and head on through the side door of the H Hotel, what you’ll find, in its simplest form, is an extremely cool new bar that’s booming. Combining two vastly diverse cultures, Electric Pawn Shop is unconventional in the sense that it’s a hip Asian-meets-US dive-style Dubai bar. Clandestine from the outside save for a neon green sign of Chinese characters, it opens into a small, dazzlingly red neon interior and is furnished with retro director’s chairs, metal diner-style booths and a huge DJ station positioned under a ‘no requests’ sign. Music is an integral part of Electric’s appeal, which is unsurprising given that the bar was conceived as a passion project between local music legend DJ Lobito Brigante and Lynn Lin whose previous success running Beirut bar Electric Bing Sutt met with ‘World’s 50 Best’ acclaim in 2019.

Its food is pretty eccentric. The menu spans kimchi and eggplant (Dhs45) to Penang curry (Dhs119) with sea bass carpaccio (Dhs64) and beef tartare (Dhs72) thrown into the eclectic two-page list. We’d hoped for more sharing options, but the dishes presented were fun and certainly stand out from the usual ‘bar bites’ afterthoughts. The cocktails – served in small glasses – are near perfect, using aromatic distillations and complex homemade infusions that could rival top cocktail bars around the world. The King of Kowloon (Dhs85) was a particular highlight with house-infused rye cacao cognac and mezcal. Other specialities include a plum wine martini, a lemongrass and rice elixir cocktail, and even a Bloody Mary with spicy sambal. Cool music, smart cocktails and retro design are where Electric Pawn Shop shine. The wave-shaped building contains one of the biggest multi-purpose facilities in the world, with a convertible long and short course pool. The resort accomodation features a cluster of private villas, each with their own pool and in close proximity to the beach. Made mostly from stone and concrete, the resort feels like a luxurious Flintstones movie set, especially inside the villas. Each one is like a time capsule from the prehistoric era with a chic twist. The rooms are large and open plan, with a spacious sofa and living area, and a comfortable king-size bed in the middle. The bathroom features an enormous white stone tub and the option to shower indoors or out (under a steaming hot power shower that you’ll never want to leave). The outdoor space, meanwhile, feels private and cosy with large trees and plenty of nooks to relax in, but most guests will spend the majority of their stay soaking up the sun from the villa’s private infinity pool.

Upon arrival, guests are given infomation on the week’s upcoming workshops and activities, with everything from cheese and wine-tasting, to yoga, hand-line fishing and hiking on offer. Sustainability is a core focus for the resort, and filtered water is served from Six Senses’ glass bottles. During its Earth Lab experience, guests will learn how the resort remains eco-conscious, with tours of its on-site organic garden and opportunities to join ocean and beach clean-ups. Other key facilities include the only saltwater pool in the GCC, and the famed Six Senses Spa, which you can reach by bicycle (or buggy if it’s too hot). The spa offers a range of relaxing treatments, but the Wellness Screening –conducted by Dr Peeyush – comes highly recommended. It gives a full analysis of what’s going on inside. The food and drink Six dining outlets are spread across the resort. A trip to Sense on the Edge is a must-do (be sure to book in advance). Set on the mountain edge, the views are incredible and the dusky sky is breathtaking. Back at sea level, Summer House is a great option for dining.
