THEY DON’T KNOW THEY’RE BORN…

Do they, eh? Kids these days. With their Tokking and their Tikking. All we needed to entertain ourselves was a bike, some trees to climb, and a friend who’d let you play on their Game Boy. Or at least that’s the way it seems to me, looking back at old photos of me as a kid. Surely, nothing could be better than growing up in the 90s: worshipping Britney and Justin as the ultimate power couple and trying (but failing) to keep your Tamagotchi alive. Life was so fun back then, wasn’t it? That got me thinking: what if we could travel back in time in Dubai? Not just to the ‘90s, but to any decade past? Well, as it turns out, after a quick poll of the office, there are a staggering number of ways to enjoy yesteryear. Roller discos? We’ve got one. Retro arcades with Street Fighter and Pac-Man? You bet. Great Gatsby-themed brunches complete with flapper girls? All that and then some. Read on from p18 for some more of our favourites. What’s been your biggest achievement so far? My most recent restaurant is always my biggest achievement, but exporting The Maine internationally is by far the most exciting and daunting thing I’ve ever done.

We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…

Who are you, and what made you famous? I’m a restaurant developer and have been for the better part of 12 years, but that’s more or less what I do. I’ve always loved hosting and entertaining and the spaces I create are all designed in favour of the guest and making them feel a certain way. I guess people never forget how you make them feel. What inspired you to make the move to Dubai? I grew up here, so I was always going to end up back in Dubai. My family has lived here since 1975, and I went to primary and high school here. Besides, Dubai is a dream machine so no better place to develop restaurants than here. How do you think the industry has changed over the years? There are a lot more homegrown brands opening 12_What’s On

Yes, The Maine is headed for London’s Mayfair. This is so exciting... This has been 20 years in the making, believe it or not. I lived and worked in London in my early 20s – working as a waiter at the original Soho House. Going back now to open my own restaurant in London is very much ‘a full circle moment’ for me; a return to where it all began.

he sun is shining, sailboats are bobbing, and local fishermen are preparing their casts for the next day’s haul. For those just visiting Dubai, this yesteryear wharf enclave is a far cry from the raucous beaches on The Palm. Even for those of us who live here, it might not be a place we visit as often as we should. Here’s exactly what you’re missing out on…

DibbA Bay Oysters After several years of testing and planning, Dibba Bay founder Ramie Murray was ready to test his theory: If the Arabian Gulf was so renowned for pearl fishing, surely oysters could thrive here, too. Taking the chance, he opened an oyster farm in the nutrientrich waters of Fujairah. That was 2016. Now, Dibba Bay oysters is the go-to for many

of the city’s top restaurants, including The Maine, Boca, Alici, Cove Beach and 3 Fils, and, since December 2020, their very own oyster farmshop just a pebble’s throw from the ocean. Continuing the mission of promoting local seafood and sustainability, the shack serves its own glorious oysters (Dhs90 for six pieces; Dhs150 for 12 pieces; Dh250 for 12

Jumeirah Fish Market It is against all odds that fish markets are fun. Silver eyes glare up at you, the air is distinctly of the sea, and the floors are usually a swamp of saltwater. But the fishermen here are friendly, keen to show you their hauls and sell you as much as you can carry. They offer an assortment of fish, shellfish and squid at excellent prices. For example, you can snag a whole local red snapper for a mere Dhs50, or pay just Dhs65 for 300g of Jumeirah-caught prawns. Visit early morning, from 6am, when the first batches of fish start to arrive. a Dubai Fishing Harbour 2, Jumeirah 3, daily from 6am.

Cutting and Cooking Warehouse Preparing seafood at home is oftentimes a risky venture, especially if you’ve purchased it from a local supermarket. A lot of the seafood most of us buy is quite expensive, comes from overseas, and is frozen at least once before it hits the shelves and then our ovens. Sack off the supermarket and instead head here. Follow the signs at the back of the fish market for the ‘cutting and cooking’ area. Here you’ll find an enormous warehouse where men fillet and cook to your liking the fish you’ve either just bought from the market, or fished yourself. It’s a revelation.

Seaview Restaurant Located right next door to the fishermen accommodations, Seaview Restaurant has quietly garnered a loyal following since opening in 2014. As you’d expect from a restaurant owned by real fishermen it’s all about the wild caught fish and local catches of the day. That means anything from kingfish, mackerel, hammour, squid, prawn or seabream could be on the menu. Weather permitting, sit outside for a beautiful view of the harbour, or inside, for AC. Sure, a cookie-cutter yacht charter might be the most luxurious way to explore the high seas around Dubai but that doesn’t mean it’s the most exciting. Retro bowling at Al Nasr Leisureland Just behind the American Hospital in Oud Metha is a barebones traditional alley. It’s one of just a couple of alleys serving alcohol and truly worth a visit if you want to see retro Dubai, not gussied up with neon signs and interactive screens. A BRIEF HISTORY OF ROLLER SKATES 1700s The first recorded attempt to put wheels on shoes was by an unnamed Dutchmen who nailed wooden spools to strips of wood and attached them to his shoes. They broke. 1840s Several inventors improved on the design, most notably Louis Legrand, designing the quad skate whose skates were used in an 1849 production at the Paris Opera, creating a major sensation. 1860s American James Leonard Plimpton improved on the design further with his Plimpton quad, which made turning so easy that they sparked the first roller-skating craze. Roller rinks began to pop up in towns across Europe and the US. 1880s By now, London had 70 roller rinks; Paris had 40; New York City at least 20. No major town was without one. 1920s Young people flocked to roller rinks to skate and flirt. Skating began showing up on silent movie screens, including Charlie Chaplin’s film The Rink. 1940s Roller-skating entered a ‘golden age’ in the US, where it became the biggest participation sport, and fans flocked to watch Roller Derby. 1970s Designs improved through the decades and wooden wheels eventually gave way to metal, rubber then polyurethane. The roller-disco craze exploded in the 1970s. 1980s Two ice hockey–playing brothers designed an in-line skate to mimic the action of their ice hockey skates. From intimate supper club to a fully-fledged restaurant, can this Izakaya handle the hype? he supper club circuit remains in its infancy in Dubai’s dining scene. Sure, there are a few sporadic pop-up series, and a couple of joint ventures here and there, but there’s certainly space for more. These micro events are great for perfecting cooking: to experiment, to try, to fail, to grow, to learn. They are also a way to gather a loyal following who want to be part of the process and understand that it is a work in progress, whether the end goal is to open a restaurant or not. One lady who has dominated the supper club scene here is Neha Mishra. After quietly accruing a small legion of ramen fans from years of intimate, sold-out supper clubs, Neha has opened Kinoya, a ramen meets izakaya spot inside the Onyx tower in The Greens. This almost strip mall-style location may not have the glamour of DIFC but don’t be fooled: Neha serves one of Dubai’s best ramens at her Izakaya, and plenty of other interesting dishes worth trying, too. The set-up of the licensed restaurant gears up for counter-style snacks for one, quick dinners for two, or sectioned-off, low seating group parties – the latter looking especially fun. We came for an after-work kick-back, a couple of ramen bowls, and some snacks either side. We ignored the nigiri; there are so many other places in Dubai for that. Instead we started with the burnt butter scallops (Dhs50), two excellent plump pucks lightly sticky and sweet. Grilled wagyu tsukune (grounded beef meatball) skewers arrived next. The two unusual oblong patties were charred using binchotan charcoal, and served with a small egg yolk in soy sauce. It’s tender and very well-seasoned, but dipping into a raw egg yolk divided opinion. Some loved the extra savoury sensation; others found it

a bit too slimy. Same for the onsen egg on rice with dashi (Dhs35), a small bowl of cold sticky rice topped with very soft boiled egg. It’s a simple dish with an acquired taste. But the opinion of Kinoya’s ramen was unanimous – a delightful, soul-warming bowl of goodness worth a weekly visit. There are three permutations and a wonton soup: sho ramen (chicken broth with dashi; Dhs50 for a regular bowl, Dhs60 for a large), shoyu ramen (slow cooked chicken broth with shoyu tare; Neha Mishra

We slurped our way to the bottom of the sho ramen bowl, which is made with a split base of chicken broth and dashi, poured atop a mess of thin noodles, fortified with two tiny but tender chicken strips, a soft egg and paper thin sheet of nori. For the most part, what you get at Kinoya, apart from a happy full belly, is the sense that this really is a passion project, by a woman who, against the odds, has turned a supper club into a bricks and mortar establishment. MYRRA BY OPA

A new beachside restaurant bringing Greek and Spanish cuisine to Palm Jumeirah oud and lively Greek restaurant Opa delighted customers when the announcement came of a sister restaurant, called Myrra by Opa. The new venue recently opened at Club Vista Mare, the popular dining destination on Palm Jumeirah. Despite sharing a name, there are some distinct differences between Opa and Myrra by Opa. For example, Myrra’s menu is split between Greek and Spanish cuisine, so you’ll see paella placed alongside dishes such as saganaki and moussaka. Until word gets out, we’d recommend visiting on a weekend, as our mid-week sunset booking was very quiet and lacked the atmosphere we’d seen on social media. The venue is visually striking, with bright mustard walls, cascading pink flowers and huge rattan lampshades suspended above white-clothed dining tables. There’s an open kitchen and wood-fire oven decorated with forest-green tiles next to a long bar manned by mixologists.

Out on the terrace, the decor is a little more lacklustre, however there are tables on the beach with director-style chairs looking out to the ocean that look far more inviting. The menu’s focus lies with the starters, with many options for hot and cold plates. Tucking into a tuna carpaccio (Dhs65) we’re hit with flavour, as the truffle and fresh grape blend together seamlessly. There’s an unexpected crunch from the pine nuts, which adds surprising texture. Menawhile a hot Greek spinach pie (Dhs50) is light and heart-warming. Two oblong phyllo parcels are filled with a feta cheese, leek and spinach mix, which is broken into with an almighty satisfying crunch. Prawn saganaki (Dhs65) is another winning starter. Still sizzling in its hotplate, the jumbo prawn dish is topped with yet more feta and paper thin slices of red capsicum. The mains, however, were less strong.

After hearing that the grade 7 wagyu carne asada (Dhs210) was unavailable, we opt for the grilled rib-eye (Dhs240). At least 100g of the 300g-slab was too fatty to eat while any meat that was there was very greasy. The grilled sea bass filet (Dhs120) was more promising, served with a tasty accompaniment of sauteed spinach and wild mushroom – we’d just hoped for a little more flavour from the fish itself. Served by a cheerful waiter, we close the meal with the milopita (Dhs42). It’s warm, gooey and wrapped in more crunchy pastry with toasted almonds, a layer of icing sugar and a scoop of vanilla ice cream before being drizzled with caramel sauce. Two homegrown boutique cafes open in Mall of the Emirates

ubai food and art fans are no strangers to The Lighthouse. This achingly hip concept store first opened in the Dubai Design District in 2017, artfully blurring the lines between café and gift shop with sleek interiors, a thoughtful menu, and a cherry-picked selection of homewares and designer finds. Now, owners Hashem Montasser and Hany Bassiouny are in expansion mode, with news they’ll be opening three new venues in the UAE this year. First cab off the rank is the Mall of the Emirates outpost, situated in a light-filled atrium surrounded by luxury fashion labels and high-end watch boutiques. That The Lighthouse should position itself in a prime retail patch is not surprising. Here, it’s not only the shelves of carefully curated art books, candles and curios that are up for grabs. Everything – from the cutlery you’re eating with to the chairs you’re sitting on – is available to purchase. And the accommodating staff are only too happy to oblige… When we asked if they sold loaves of their exceptional Campaillou bread to go, our waiter returned with a slab hewn from that day’s massive loaf, and told us we could order via WhatsApp with one day’s notice. We immediately saved the number. Hunks of the rustic, chewy bread were the first thing to hit our table when we arrived, served on the house with a bowl of paprika-dusted hummus. It popped up again as a base for our tuna tartare

(Dhs68), a flavourful, border-hopping medley of diced raw tuna, dried apricots and cranberries, avocado, chives and toasted sesame seeds. The bakery also turns out top-notch pita, accompanying a slab of baked feta topped with Cretan honey, pine nuts and Turkish chilli (Dhs50), and a trio of juicy, charry lamb cutlets with creamy tzatziki (Dhs164). The standout of our visit, however, was the seafood risotto, brimming with tender curls of pan-fried calamari and prawns, and imbued with the sweetness of ovenroasted tomatoes (Dhs133). To finish, we shared an ethereally light saffron milk cake, heady with the golden spice (Dhs46). Admittedly, we may have overdone it on the carbs this time, but the inventive menu is packed with lighter options that

will be familiar to The Lighthouse regulars – think roasted beets with pistachiocrusted goat’s cheese, or a sunshine-bright Greek salad. And while this latest incarnation of The Lighthouse is not licensed (unlike its D3 sibling), the team has crafted a stellar selection of drinks, from refreshing lemonades laced with lavender, elderflower or rose (Dhs28), to zesty mocktails pepped up with yuzu or jalapeno (Dhs31), perfect for a mid-shop pick-me-up. a Level 2, Mall of the Emirates, daily 9am to 10pm. alk into THAT Concept Store at Mall of the Emirates for food and you have quite a stroll before you reach the tables of No. FiftySeven Boutique Café at the back of the enormous new department store. Before sitting to eat, we passed a beauty section, an area filled with wacky home décor, a sneaker zone, a wrapping station, and a counter offering customised T-shirts. What’s that in the distance? Oh yes, the restaurant. Nearly there.

In stark contrast to THAT’s brash, dazzling white and neon-speckled store, No. FiftySeven Boutique Café is a calming space, with big beautiful arches and neutral tones. Abu Dhabi residents will be all too familiar with the café name. Founded by entrepreneurs – and previous supperclubbers – Buthaina Al Mazrui and Alamira Noor Bani Hashim, its original restaurant has been serving a roaring trade in Al Bateen for a while now, so we’re very happy to see it here in Dubai. We started with a pestle and mortar filled with delicious, zesty guacamole (Dhs65), which arrived alongside a huge paper bag filled with nachos. The boneless buffalo wings (Dhs55) were tasty with a nice tangy sting but admittedly looked a lot more like chicken tenders.

Salads and sandwiches dominate the main courses. Among the salads, the chargrilled eggplant grain salad (Dhs62) with a fan of pumpkin hummus was very good and elegantly presented. The lobster roll (Dhs125), meanwhile, was a lot of roll without much lobster. For an excellent lobster roll, the lobster must be substantial, the flesh juicy and pink, and the mayo subtle. This was not quite that. The shoestring fries were terrific, though. No. FiftySeven Boutique Café has a lovely soothing feel and we liked the thoughtful menu and friendly service. A female-led Italian restaurant with panoramic Dubai views ipped as the first fully female-led Italian Mediterranean restaurant in Dubai, Fi’lia stands out in more ways than one. Twenty-five-year-old chef de cuisine Sara Aqel has put her creative stamp on the vibrant spot to fuse tradition and modern on the 70th floor of the newly-opened SLS Dubai. Trained under world-famous chef, Massimo Bottura, guests are treated to Michelin-worthy cooking. The menu is divided between Nonna (grandma), Mamma (mother) and Fi’lia (daughter) to signify how classic or current the dishes are. HEINZ BECK Catching up with the

legendary chef behind Social by Heinz Beck Dubai is a beautiful city. I’ve been coming here for eight years now and it’s such a cosmopolitan place. While I’m here, I like to go to the farms where we source some of our ingredients. We’ll talk a lot with the team, and understand what other produce we can have. Social by Heinz Beck is different to my other restaurants. We are focused on light and healthy cooking with Mediterranean flavours. Unfortunately many people don’t care about what they eat. If we eat badly, we won’t age well. We have to preserve our wellbeing so that we’re still strong when we’re old. We’ve just launched a Saturday lunch. It’s not a brunch but a very Italian lunch. We’ve had time to plan the menu and the new dishes and I’ve done a lot of research. I don’t work alone. My wife, Teresa, is running all of the organisation and administration part. It’s good to work together because we have the same vision. My last supper? Maybe a nice tomato spaghetti. Or I’d have ice cream done in the proper way. Or perhaps a really excellent chocolate dessert. A luxurious take on the Italian Pasticceria A power player in the Italian fine-dining world, could Cipriani create a café in Dubai worthy of its fine reputation? Of course it could. This is Cipriani Dolci – a luxurious take on the Italian Pasticceria, located smack bang in the middle of the fashion avenue thoroughfare in Dubai Mall. The interior designers have done what they can with the oval space to create an ode to Harry’s Bar, the famous Venetian restaurant opened by Giuseppe Cipriani Senior in 1931. But with no walls, and no choice in ambient lighting, it’s a difficult task, save for a curved plasma TV screening black and white footage of Venice. The food, though, is just wonderful: simple yet elegant and delicious. We headed in for breakfast and were warmly welcomed by staff in smart white jackets with gilt edge trim. Our server guided us through the breakfast items. There are only a handful

of options: scrambled eggs or sunny side up, eggs Benedict, omelette, croissants and bomboloni’s (Italian doughnuts), but everything we ate was superb. The scrambled eggs (Dhs60), for example, were light, fluffy and super creamy. Eggs don’t get much better than this. Actually, when served with a Cipriani butter brioche, they do. And their eggs Benedict (Dhs75) with marinated Scottish salmon, baby spinach and hollandaise sauce on top of their toasted brioche makes the standard English muffin look lame. Don’t leave, though, without trying something sweet from the counter. We indulged in the pistachio bombolini (Dhs40), a gloriously oversized doughnut stuffed with a decadent pistachio cream so delicious that we licked the plate clean. 01 Hunter’s sharing platter

Chef says: “The ultimate prelude to a feast, the Hunter’s sharing platter includes open fire prawns (below), smoky chicken wings, a three cheese dip and spicy calamari.” What’s On says: The platter feels like the perfect initiation to Hunter and Barrel’s menu. The indulgent cheese dip, a mix of Gouda, Gruyere and Edam, is hard to resist but it’s the amazingly tender calamari that stands out for us here. Price: Dhs150 02

Fire-grilled steaks

Chef says: “Our wide selection of meat is carefully curated, monitored and prepared with proper aging processes before cutting and grilling. Choose from fillets, rump, striploin, ribeye or our sharing tomahawk and angus t-bone. They are all perfectly tender and packed with flavour with Hunter & Barrel’s signature basting made with a special BBQ sauce base cooked on oak wood to enhance the natural smoky taste.” What’s On says: At a very reasonable Dhs120, the 250g grain fed fillet, served with chips or salad, is tender and packed full of flavour. Chef says: “We’re famous for our coalroasted skewers. There’s a wide selection to try on the menu, all cooked over charcoal and marinated with different complementary flavours. For something different, try the wild caught salmon skewer (Dhs110) which goes through a special marination process and provides a taste of freshly pickled fennel, onions and lemon.” What’s On says: We highly recommend the melt-inthe-mouth wagyu skewer, cooked medium-rare on chef ’s recommendation. Tomahawk

Chef says: “At 1.3kg, the Tomahawk is one of our most visually impressive steaks, served with bone-in. Like all meats at Hunter & Barrel, the Tomahawk goes through a proper aging and resting process before grilling, is carefully monitored to ensure the meat is tender and basted with our signature sauce.” What’s On says: This is next on our list of dishes to try with one of our meat-loving mates. Coal-roasted cauliflower & pumpkin

Chef says: “Our coal-roasted cauliflower and pumpkin is a favourite, not just with vegetarians. It’s served with harissa sauce, herbs and olive oil.” What’s on says: One of the things we love most about Hunter and Barrel is that the menu caters for all palates with a mix of creative side dishes, vegetarian options and a young hunters menu. Big shout out to the pumpkin and cauliflower croquettes (Dhs30) served with parmesan and citrus aioli – which make an ideal starter or side. of sweet melon, thick slices of locallysourced tomatoes, made nicely tart to the crumbling feta. The aubergine croquettes (Dhs42) were a fantastic surprise: four lightly-fried balls nestling under a sprinkle of cheese and served with homemade tomato relish. Even the French bean salad (Dhs52) let its three ingredients do the talking – complimented with just artichokes and petal tomatoes. We rounded off our ‘light’ lunch with a side of Terra fries (Dhs25), which reminded us of those crispy hand-cut homemade chips that you’d get in a Greacen seaside restaurant. Impressed by lunch, we’re planning our dinner visit next week to get a taste of the already-popular short ribs barley risotto (Dhs175). And perhaps the rib eye with marrow jus and caramelised onion (Dhs245). Top dining by way of Al Thanya Street. A neighbourhood restaurant on Al Thanya street, with DIFC quality erra is one of those restaurants that makes you sigh with delight as you walk in. Its earthy hand-finished clay walls, reclaimed wood, linen fabrics and lush green foliage potted in enormous Majorelle blue vessels recreate a glorious southern European courtyard. Stroll through the five-metre-high pivoting glass doors and you’ll completely forget that you’re only a few steps away from the fruit and veg aisle at Waitrose. There’s an acoustic soundtrack, waiters are nattily linen-clad, while a minimalist smoked metal bar offers diners Nightjar coffee on tap. The garden outside is pretty, but get a table inside – it’s the most gorgeous bistro we’ve seen in Dubai for a long time. The food is light and simple Mediterranean in a good way. The

The city’s new go-to social spot Since opening in March, Phileas Fogg’s has become one of the most popular social spots in Dubai. Why? Its outdoor terrace is rather lovely, the happy hour deals are enticing, and the huge TV’s screen live sporting action. The venue is huge, too with a large indoor bar and restaurant, a kids’ playground and an amphitheatrestyle area with a stage and a giant TV screen. It’s casual and fuss-free – the kind of place you can turn up to in flip flops and no one is going to give you the side-eye. The best seats in the house are out on the terrace so it’s worth braving the rising Dubai temperatures to make the most of those expansive golf course views. The music played at Phileas Fogg’s really sets the scene, ranging from ‘80’s classics right through to the noughties, and the resulting nostalgia trip down memory lane is welcomed. The cocktail list is extensive with its inventive take on cocktail classics such as the ‘Naughty Bramble’ (Dhs52) and the ‘Lawn Mojito’ (Dhs55) served with a dash of vanilla foam. If you’re a sucker for a spritzer, there are six varieties to choose from.

The perfect evening?

The new Arabian Adventures tour has a lofty name – but is there a grain of truth in its ‘perfect’ claim?

ou waft the yardstick of quality courageously high when you selfproclaim a product to be ‘The Perfect Evening’. Especially in Dubai, where there’s no shortage of competition from other evenings with six-star dining, cinematic backdrops and 24 karat opulence. But when it’s a desert experience coming from a source as credible as Arabian Adventures – one of the UAE’s most experienced dunesummiting safari providers – it’s worth taking seriously. Which is why we felt compelled to off-road test the experience and investigate just how perfect it is.

YOUR CARRIAGE AWAITS This may be a sophisticated soiree but the journey tackles some frontier geography, and on that basis, we need ‘a petrol camel’ as our charismatic guide Faisal suggests, opening the doors of the cherry red Jeep Wrangler, allowing us to gracelessly clamber in. On the journey towards the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) – a private gated expanse of sand and shrub that occupies just shy of 5 per cent of the total land area of Dubai – Faisal shares pearls of local wisdom strung together over a long career of intrepid questing. ACTIVE // NIGHT SAFARI SAND, SAFARI AND SUNDOWNERS With the light slowly leaking from the sky, we deflate our tyres and enter the private reserve. Within a few minutes of winding down the windswept track, we have our first safari encounter. A group of wild oryx stand, unflinching, at the trackside, pale as sun-bleached bone. And Faisal is happy to play David Attenborough, dispensing fascinating nuggets of zoological trivia. We pass by more oryx, handbag-sized mountain gazelle, and a couple of bashful sandfish. Our route through the DDCR cuts alongside ancient oases, and a surprising palette of nomad green — boutique samur forests, ghaf trees, and the occasional poisonous bloom of apple. Our mechanical camel plods on, past playful groups of sand gazelle and circling falcons, until we reach our first designated checkpoint. We’re at the base of a broad dune, with nothing but undulating gold and flecks of emerald vegetation for miles in every direction. Waiting for us, our waitress pours a tall cool flute of

both utterly luxurious, and wholesomely natural, exciting yet calming. And it’s beginning to feel like that might be part of the recipe for ‘perfect’.

JUST DESERTS

sparkling date juice (sparkling wine is available outside of Ramadan), and we’re led to a viewing encampment on the dune’s peak. Then we’re left, seated on Arabian-style plush cushions with the orchestral sounds of silence, a warm desert breeze and a watercolour sunset, Monet himself would feel proud to claim.

PRACTICALITY MAKES PERFECT The next stop, just a short drive away, is our camp for the

evening. We exit the Jeep barefoot, to earth ourselves in the experience, and walk between the two columns of tiki torches guiding the way to our secluded roofless restaurant. The Perfect Evening is entirely private, the guest list comprises just you and your date. Our guide Faisal sets up the camp’s telescope for casual moon gazing, snaps a few photographic souvenirs on our phones, then bids us farewell. Our waitress and bottomless bar (optional) lady notes down a drinks order, and leaves us to explore base camp. The central structure is a narrow wooden cabana, adorned with romantic lighting and billowing curtains, arching over a table laid out in established fine dining form. We take up residence on the swing chairs next to a merrily-crackling fire pit and contemplate the harmony of contrasts in this space. It’s

There’s a range of three-course in-desert dining available, and we’ve selected fillet steak for the main course. Our package includes the serenading sounds of an oud player, and we can’t help but smile at the warm, gleeful audacity of it all. Toque’s off to our chef for creating a meal that could stand toe-to-toe with much of Dubai TripAdvisor’s trending top 20, all from the humble hub of a bedouin kitchen. Before we climb back into the Wrangler for the journey home, we offer one final salute to this most memorable occasion by clearing a four-man serving of sticky date pudding.

THE VERDICT With a price tag of Dh3,999 for two (Dhs4,499 with unlimited alcohol), for most this won’t become a regular Friday thing. But that’s also, kind of the point. Perfect can’t happen every day. And this evening really does come close to being the perfect set-up for a special occasion. ove over Wimbledon, with your regular rackets and your old-school tennis courts, padel is the new kid on the block. Invented in 1969 in Mexico by Enrique Corcuera, padel was recognised as an international sport in September 2019 and is one of the world’s fastest 64_What’s On

Played predominately as a doubles game, it’s very similar to regular tennis with a bit of squash thrown in: the court is about 25 per cent smaller than a tennis court and enclosed in glass walls, which can also be utilised during play – and metal mesh fences that can’t. to keeping score, you go up 15, 30, 40 as usual. The serve is under arm, the racket is smaller and more of a flat bat, and the balls have a lower pressure. It’s often called padel tennis, which can be confusing as there’s another less-played sport called Paddle Tennis, which is similar but doesn’t use walls.

05 Dubai Sports World Want your padel with a bit of aircon? Then head indoors to Dubai Sports World, where the sport has been on the schedule every summer for a number of years now. This means more time hitting the ball and less time chasing after it when you miss. 02. Although it can be played as singles, doubles is encouraged and the more popular set up, making it more of a social and fun event for friends and families. 03. The added element of walls, like in squash, makes the game more dynamic and varied – so there’s less chance of getting bored. 04. The calorie burn is real. Although touted as less technically difficult than tennis you’re looking at a similar 350 to 500 calories worked off per hour. 05. You use muscles you didn’t know you had. Bending down low for returns, quick turning to use the walls, lateral, forward and backwards running makes this the perfect workout.

TRAVEL RULES AND GUIDELINES

to share with your dining partner, make sure you try the wonderful one-kilogram sea bass. The next morning we’re eager to check out the breakfast offering. It’s not a buffet service. Instead, a large menu lands on our lap and we take our time sampling as many dishes as we have space for.

The room rates After a restful sleep, there’s just enough time for a snooze under a parasol on the sand before it’s back to reality we go.
