real thirst in the UAE, pardon the pun, for new, fun and exciting ideas. If you have one, people really respond positively to it. How do you think the wine industry has evolved? It’s seen a huge shift. Seven years ago there were few if any places to learn or improve on your wine skills. Now there’s a fantastic community of oenophiles throughout the country, and so many more resources and experiences for them to use and attend. Not to mention more venues with serious programmes. Long may it continue. What’s been your biggest achievement since arriving in Dubai? Too many to name one. Getting married and having a baby – and keeping her alive and healthy for four years – have been huge. Launching The Tasting Class and

Who are you, and what made you famous? Well, someone referred to me the other day as ‘the wine lady’, which is either high praise or a sweeping 12_What’s On

Six years ago I started a company called The Tasting Class with the goal of making wine education fun and bringing it into people’s homes. We’ve expanded enormously since then and now host more than 300 events a year. We also launched the UAE Vine Festival, the largest wine festival ever staged in the country. What inspired you to make the move to Dubai? The same thing that keeps me here: opportunity. There’s a

watching it grow and take on a life of its own over the past six years has been amazing, too.

What’s your favourite thing to do outside of work? It’s not uncommon for me to be out four or five nights a week hosting experiences, so there’s a large social element to my work. Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, but sitting in front of the TV and enjoying some quality time spent with family and friends is really precious to me these days. What do you love about the UAE? Warmth. I may be Canadian but I’m not built for the cold. I also love the way people here are keen to know more, explore more and talk about things more. It creates a really exciting climate to live and work in. What are your biggest goals for the next year? We’ve just finished working with a best-selling author to create a play based on the history of gin that will launch here later this year. We call it a comedy with cocktails and it’s a chance to taste drinks while you laugh. It’s a world first and we wanted it to premiere in the UAE. Plus the UAE Vine Festival returns at the end of the year and it will be bigger than ever. Do you think you’ll stay in the UAE forever? We came here with the usual expat mentality that we’ll try it out for a year or two. But, I love what we are doing and am in no rush to leave. Avenger and gifted assassin Black Widow (Scarlett Johannson) took a Thanos snap nap at the end of MCU Phase Three. But thanks to some Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) timeline jiggery-pokery, she’ll be back on our screens for a prequel this summer. Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Natasha Romanoff AKA, Black Widow is forced to confront unsettling events from her past, and we hope, do whatever is necessary to make an uncontrived return to MCU Phase Four.

Space Jam 2, as the name suggests, serves as a sequel to the original intergalactic Warner Bros. live action/animation hybrid. Michael Jordan has been subbed out for modern-day balling GOAT LeBron James, who together with his son, and a ragtag group of Loony Tunes characters must win a high-stakes game of basketball by dunking on a sentient AI programme and an elite crew of digitised net swooshers. What’s Up Doc? Well, from the trailer, the CGI and animation looks leagues ahead of the original. But the acting? premise of bad guys gone good, albeit temporarily and for the wrong reasons, just has so much potential. We’re also genuinely excited to see what John Cena does with his role as the nuanced anti-hero Peacemaker, not least because there are whispers of a spin-off series down the line.

Release date: August 12 Written, directed, produced and downloaded from the mind of one of modern cinema’s most mercurial creatives, M. Night Shyamalan, Old looks to be a trademark Shyamalan piece of fever dream suspense theatre. The premise has us following a family holiday on a secluded tropical beach, where all the inhabitants start, inexplicably, rapidly aging. Real talk: never go lower than SPF50. If it manages to avoid trite purgatory cliches of the Lost finale and steers closer to Sixth Sense than The Happening (for which we still haven’t forgiven either Shyamalan or Mark Whalberg), this could be a surprisingly good watch. 28_What’s On

Release date: Aug 12 Our anticipation for this movie has been impatiently loading ever since the first trailer was released back in December 2019. The film tells the story of Guy, played by Ryan Reynolds, who, after intervening in a bungled bank heist, arrives at the realisation that he’s actually a non-player character (NPC) in a brutal free-world videogame. It’s bang on topic for 2021’s unofficial Black Mirror theme. Guy must step up and become a true hero, if he’s to save his virtual world from being unplugged. Expect an expansion pack full of videogame-based humour and Reynolds at peak Reynolds. He’s not a good Guy, he’s a great Guy.

Release date: August 5 With the grudging exception of Shazam! and possibly Wonder Woman, the release of Justice League: The Snyder Cut this year was a rare high point for the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). And whilst the 2016 Suicide Squad movie was filled with disjointed scenes, rambling narratives and a disappointing (lack of ) the Jared Leto Joker, this sequel carries with it some reasons to be optimistic. It’s helmed (and written by) the superhero story Midas man, James Gunn; Margot Robbie reprises her highly watchable incarnation of Harley Quinn; and Idris Elba is donning the shrink wrap to portray Bloodsport; the dialogue excerpts in the trailer are exactly the sort of genuinely witty comic interactions that have been forever missing from DC Movies; and the

Aretha was undoubtedly a natural woman that demanded R.E.S.P.E.C.T.

Release date: August 19 Directed by co-creator of epic sci-fi Western series, Westworld, Lisa Joy (fun film trivia: she’s also the sister-in-law of director Christopher Nolan), this movie is set in a near-future dystopia where real-time memory exploration is the latest tech fad. Lead practitioner Nicolas Bannister (Hugh Jackman) is caught in a professional dilemma when a memory from one of his clients implicates his love interest (Rebecca Ferguson) in a brutal crime. And whilst there will no doubt be a temptation to draw parallels with Nolan’s Inception or Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, this movie looks like it has more than enough to stand on its own two feet. Or maybe the trailer incepted us. We’ll find out in August.

Release date: August 19 Parents, we hear you. We’re not fans of the kid’s TV series either. The show that features the infuriating earworm of a theme song; the most punchable animated dog in cartoon history (Chase); and the unmitigated horror of what happens when you defund emergency services in favour of outsourcing to a calamitous team of hyper-specialised tongue-showering canines. But attempting to avoid getting dragged along to this will likely be as fruitless as fighting gravity. Just yelp for help.

Release date: September 16 This philosophical sci-fi caper is director Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of the classic Frank Herbert science fiction novel of the same name and serves as a reboot to the 1984 movie. The cast of this version is headed up by the brilliant, and deliciously emo Timothée Chalamet, as well as Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Zendaya, and Jason Momoa. The story follows Paul Atreides (Chalamet), a young man thrust into a power struggle on the distant planet of Arrakis, home to giant murderous sand worms, scheming ne’er-do-wells, indigenous eco-warriors and a battleground for control of the galaxy’s most precious resource, a performance-enhancing ‘spice’ called Melange. Bit of local movie trivia for you, part of the movie was actually shot in Abu Dhabi’s empty quarter.

Release date: September 16 The critics and audience were split almost precisely down the middle on whether 2018’s Venom was any good. It might not be official MCU canon, but we’re unashamed to say we found it highly enjoyable. This time round, journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and his cantankerous lobster-swallowing interstellar symbiote Venom will have to face off against comic book nemesis Carnage (Woody Harrelson). Expect chaos, expect venom, expect carnage, and expect, with resolute certainty, delightfully cringey laughs.

Release date: September 10 Perhaps the most exciting thing about this comic book adaption is that it will be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie to feature an Asian lead, Simu Liu as the titular character. The story will likely draw from Marvel’s Secret Wars comic book saga, where Master of Kung Fu, Shang-Chi faces off against the Mandarin and his Ten Rings organisation. In the comics, the name Ten Rings actually comes from a set of alien-manufactured finger bling, and we all know how devastating extra-terrestrial jewellery can be in the MCU.

t’s probably safe to assume that when Michael McIntyre saw the careers counsellor at his upmarket private school in England, he wasn’t advised to work on his skipping skills. Nevertheless, it was his ability to bound gaily across the stage in the manner of an over-excited fouryear-old-boy that would eventually turn his fortunes around, taking him from jobbing stand-up to the world’s highest-earning comedian. When he finally caught a break at the renowned Comedy Store club in London, McIntyre was more than Dhs220k in debt and travelling the country performing in low-end clubs for less than Dhs900. Then he appeared on the Royal Variety Show, performing a series of physical comedy skits that saw him flying across the stage, arms swinging, and suddenly he found the door to the VIP room of comedy had opened before him. “The days when I couldn’t pay the rent and used a salvaged microwave as a dining table seem a world away now,” he said. “Yet I haven’t forgotten just how tough it can be. I used to look at houses and dream about them being our perfect place when in fact I couldn’t even afford to pay the rent, let alone buy a house.” No such worries nowadays. ISOLA RISTORANTE A hidden gem that Jumeirah Islands residents won’t want you finding out about

hen we first explored the newly reopened Jumeirah Islands Clubhouse, we were taken aback. What was once an outdated pool bar has morphed into a modern leisure complex. The new and improved destination still has stunning lake views and a large swimming pool, but now additional dining options. Isola Ristorante is the first concept we’ve tried since its opening last month. The restaurant is accompanied by two chic outdoor areas, but with the humidity rising, we opt for a table indoors. We’re not disappointed though, as the bright, open plan space is more than inviting. With a huge olive tree taking centre stage, elements of nature are injected throughout the space. Despite having an early dinner reservation, the restaurant is already

packed – presumably the Jumeirah Islands residents scoping out their new digs. Service is swift and effortless, with menus and water on our table before we’ve even settled into our seats. The two-page menu offers a selection of simple Mediterranean dishes, which we do hope will expand into a more exciting offering as time goes on. We start off with a tartare di tonno con avocado (Dhs70), a well presented plate of fresh raw

tuna chunks resting on a bed of avocado puree. Contrasting this light option, we’re also drawn to la parmigiana di melanzane (Dhs75). Possibly too heavy a choice when we knew we had pasta coming, but the bubbling al forno cheese and comforting aubergine strips were too tempting to resist. If you’re looking for a neighbourhood spot with plenty of atmosphere, this is where to find it. The room becomes so

abuzz with conversation, we have to step outside to have a proper chat. Our helpful waiter is more than happy to assist with taking the drinks out and lets us know as soon as the mains have arrived. We decided to try the penne strascicate (Dhs55), a huge portion of Bolognese pasta with a warming, creamy texture. While a simple dish, it ticked the boxes. To finish off, we couldn’t miss the chance to try Isola’s tortino al cioccolato (Dhs40), a decadent chocolate fondant with vanilla ice cream and oozing hazelnut centre. The cake is soft and light, and instantly melts in the mouth. Not everywhere in Dubai needs to have outrageous dishes with deconstructed ingredients. Around the world in hit-and-miss plates at Address Montgomerie’s new restaurant inner at The Orangery at Address Montgomerie is like the fairytale Goldilocks and Three Bears. You have no idea whether the dish you’ve ordered is going to be too small or too large, too rich or too bland. You can eat well here, in a way which will make you rub your tummy in delight. Or the meal can leave you with frown lines from all your puzzled expressions. Inconsistent doesn’t quite cover it. At times it feels as if there are two kitchens back there. That inconsistency does not extend to the service or the décor, however. When eating there everything is as it should be: attentive in all the right places. There’s a brilliant ‘spirits ambassador,’ who, with great gusto, rolls over his drinks trolley topped with little glass jars of fresh ingredients ready to create masterpieces. The restaurant itself is an intricatelydetailed and aesthetically-pleasing space that overlooks the outdoor area of Phileas Foggs, then onto the driving range with a beautiful backdrop of Dubai Marina – so beautiful it almost looks CGI’d. The menu is a mix of everything; an ode to Phileas Fogg’s journey around the world in 80 days. You’ll see paella next to moussaka, next to ravioli, next to tuna tiradito. As such, it’s confusing what to order. To make things more complicated, everything comes in two price brackets (large and small), but how ‘large’ is large, and how ‘small’ is small? Confusion aside, there really are some nice starter dishes: the small tuna tiradito (Dhs50 for small, Dhs85 for large) comes as four thick slivers of tuna, with a drizzling of yuzu ponzu and a pleasing crunch of popped quinoa. Inspired from the same continent, the miso salmon

(Dhs45 for small, Dhs85 for large) with a big dollop of wasabi crème fraiche was a hit, too. The three salmon wedges were seared lightly and topped with a salty nori crisp – a delicious, if tiny, plate. From the pizza section, there is a truffle and garlic pizza (Dhs99), glistening with fiordilatte mozzarella and fresh truffle shavings. It doesn’t need the watercress sprigs, or the bullying black garlic paste, though. And to finish, the highlight of the night, a bright, sharp key lime pie with buttery biscuit base, gets all the attention it deserves. Sadly, we’d ordered other dishes that just didn’t work. The lamb rack (Dhs110 for

small, Dhs199 for large) were two ribs served tender, but nothing further to recommend it. They were smothered in a rich tare glaze, and resting on half a forgotten charred aubergine. Even the ‘sausage roll’, which is not a sausage roll at all but rather a six-inch beef Wellington is not the sum of its parts. The meat, again, is a medium/ well success, but the pastry is limp, and the accompanying mash potato bland. Finally, there is a Mexican jaffa cake, a bizarre plate of rock hard cake cubes and an exceedingly rich hazelnut cream. butcher behind Carna My passion for food stemmed from my grandmother. She used all of the cuts of meat that our butcher clients didn’t want to cook wonderful meals at home. I wanted to bring my knowledge and cooking traditions to the city that represents the future. I feel like Dubai is one of the most energetic centres on the earth. My two restaurants in Panzano are very simple in comparison to Carna. Here, the dishes are still simple and authentic but are served in a beautiful space with panache. The menu at Carna is fantastic but if there’s one standout, it’s the citrus souffle. It’s like a cloud. When I’m cooking at home, my favourite dish is a simple Tuscan bollito misto. I also adore making a dish of grilled skewered beef heart. We’ve recreated both at Carna. I’ll never forget the first time I had a wonderful bistecca alla fiorentina. It was my 18th birthday and I’d never tasted one of our prime cuts. My father gifted me a cut three inches thick, as we do in Tuscany. My grandmother cooked it and the first bite was sheer paradise. Last meal on earth? A cup of hot broth and a dish of bollito misto with a nice glass of red from my home. Can I make it two glasses? Buddha Bar This Pan-Asian stalwart finally hosts brunch… and knocks it out of the park When it comes to Asian restaurants in Dubai, few have withstood the test of time quite like Buddha Bar. If you’ve been living in the city for a while, you’ll know that it’s widely regarded as ‘the’ Asian hotspot to see and be seen at. Recently, to much hype, Buddha Bar launched brunch for the first time ever. Well-known for being at the higherend of Dubai’s price bracket, it certainly made sense that a brunch there would pique many a resident’s interest: to experience the venue’s muchlauded pan-Asian cuisine and freeflowing drinks at a capped price. That’s not to say that this brunch, named ‘Seventh Heaven Brunch’, comes cheap. Priced at Dhs525 for the basic wine and beer package and Dhs625 for the house drinks bundle, the crowd reflects the price tag. It’s well worth it though, with top-notch dishes, brilliant cocktails and brunch-worthy entertainment. Asian cuisine is always better shared, and the platters do not disappoint as

we tuck into a dramatic display of fresh sushi and sashimi, oyster with aji amarillo vinaigrette, pan-fried duck pancakes with hoi sin sauce and lobster dumplings with a creamy chilli crab sauce. Mains are a knock-out, with the wokfried Australian beef tenderloin with Szechuan sauce beautifully tender and the green chicken Thai curry cooked to perfection, with just the right hint of spice. An Insta-worthy dessert platter boasts mango pudding, chocolate cake, fresh fruits and mochi ice cream. The brunch takes place in the glamorous restaurant area, with floor-to-ceiling windows perfectly framing the Dubai Marina outside. A Mediterranean feast at Wasl 51 e’ve fallen in love with everything about this new Mediterranean restaurant at Wasl 51. Located next to the popular Portuguese restaurat Lana Lusa, it’s packed out at weekends but still feels like a hidden gem. We head there for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and the moment we sit down on its big orange sofa surrounded by local artwork and stylish yet homely décor, we feel like we’ve stepped out of Dubai and into a cool European restaurant – the kind you’d stumble across on your travels. Yava’s food mixes the flavours of 21 countries so there’s some really interesting and creative flavours on the menu. It’s a place to go with friends who like to feast and share. Our must-orders are: the Yava signature salad (Dhs49) – a mix of spinach, blood orange, Nabulsi cheese, feta and pecan nuts with a tangy orange dressing. The chicken meatballs with lemon butter orzo (Dhs80) – a homely, comforting dish, and the really quite special Musakhan pretzel

A prime new location and a sourdough pizza oven f there’s one thing that could tempt us down to The Beach this summer, it’s the promise of freshly baked pizza at the new branch of Common Grounds. The fourth iteration of this laid-back café still has lots of CG’s classics on the menu (the Tulum prawn tacos are our one true love) but we’re super excited about the addition of the wood-fired oven and selection of tasty pizzas and flatbreads.

We take our sourdough seriously, so we’re pleased to discover it’s been aged for 48 hours to create a perfect base. There are a few pizza options to choose from – all the classics and a few quirky variations, including mushroom artichoke (Dhs60) and garlic potato (Dhs55). We tried and loved the halloumi pide flatbread (Dhs55) which is topped with oven roasted cherry tomatoes, zaatar and loads of fresh herbs – a perfect flavour combination and great for sharing. And the pepperoni pizza (Dhs60) was also a big hit. It’s super spicy but balanced out by oregano, creamy mozzarella and tomato. It’s a massive ‘yes’

Colourful, beachside dining that transports guests to the shores of Lebanon icture yourself surrounded by your people, a cool breeze blows, the sun’s going down over the sea and your table is jam-packed with small plates. On them are plump olives, steaming hot pita bread, zaatar made with wild thyme foraged from a hillside, sun-kissed tomatoes and cucumbers straight from the vine and succulent mixed grills whose tantalising aroma precedes their arrival. It always seems impossible that there’s room for one more plate, but there somehow always is at the Lebanese table. You’ll find this table just a short drive away at Beirut Sur Mer in Mamsha, Saadiyat Island’s new beachside hotspot. Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, was once known as the ‘Paris of the Middle East’. Knowing that, the cuisine’s dedication to service is unsurprising and at Beirut Sur Mer it can upstage the food itself. Order anything marked ‘tableside’ and see for yourself. The server’s Sunday-best attire belies a very human service execution that somehow is still strictly fine dining; a tough balancing act, but this spot executes it on point. So, let’s start with the tome that is a Lebanese menu – all 13 pages of it. When faced with the dozens of items, those less familiar with the cuisine may feel spoilt for choice if a bit confused. The cold mezze –from quinoa tabbouleh (Dhs41) to the glorious tableside crab moutabal (Dhs92) – was like eating a plate full of summer. The herbs and vegetables are fresh, and the dressing light and complementary. The quinoa

tabbouleh that we tried was effervescent and more like a fresh herb salad with a hint of quinoa rather than the other way around, leaving room for more mezze. The hot mezze is equally enticing and built to share. The halloumi bil teen (Dhs38), aka fig jam-topped halloumi was a particularly delightful flavour combo. The mains smelled delicious, but we ate so much mezze that we never got so far. This was not an optimal Lebanese meal strategy, though a delicious one. We did try two delicious desserts. The millefeuille Beiruty (Dhs45) is constructed tableside. It’s great for the ‘gram, but it’s also fun to see the server put it all together

with such flair. This dessert, along with the Baklawa Ashta, with their pistaschioed candy floss garnish and piquant sour cherry sauce drizzles are tasty little works of art. VERDICT: Beirut Sur Mer offers the finest service and a vast menu that will leave you wanting to linger for hours if only to try more plates of mezze, but don’t be like us! Save room for your mains. A firm name in the hat for What’s On Abu Dhabi brunch of the year Adding two great things together doesn’t always guarantee greatness. If you need an example for reference purposes, we submit Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell’s 2005 romcom, Bewitched. On paper, however, combining the culinary craft from one of the capital’s most beloved pan-Asian restaurants with leading Latin meatery, Chamas, instantly looks like a passionate marriage that’s built to last. We’re here at this new Saturday Duo brunch to see what sort of union is formed from the collision of these two culinary worlds, and we’ve taken a seat amongst the playful Asian decor of Cho Gao. In this section of the brunch – let’s call it ‘the Eastside’ – we find a selection of neat dim sum dishes. We build up a tasting plate of yum cha — chicken shumai, vegetable gyoza, chocolate bao, some sticky chicken wings – and a few varied pieces of maki. The ensemble is good, a tier above most brunch dim sum, but our first wow moment comes courtesy of the chicken and rice stand. When you’ve racked up a rotisserie count as high as ours, you know honing in on breast meat is a rookie hustle. It’s all about those paunchy thighs. This was a near perfect roast, the meat

spoke in eloquent flavour, and the feisty chilli sauce that went with it lives in our palate’s memory bank rent free. Although we confess to feeling a little terriorial, we walk over to Chamas’ ‘Southside’. Here we load up on South American churrasco-prepared meats that have earned the restaurant a trophy cabinet of awards. Here we stop for ceviche and salads, citrus-dressed tacos and oceanic nibbly bits, too. We’ve visited Chamas before and are delighted to confirm the calibre continuum carries through. These are elite meats, slithers of flame-fanned sirloin carved straight on to your plate, thick tranches of medium rare picanha, and tender salt-crust fillet served with seared cinnamon-topped pineapple. There is no question over the quality or the skill of kitchen staff. Big, loud, Latin carnival mouthfuls. It’s currently limited to Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island (and its three restaurants), and the Etihad Arena, but there’s a Yastronomical amount of new restaurants scheduled for launch in the last quarter of 2021…

As you might expect, coming from Drake’s backyard, the soundtrack at the Latin cantina’s network of venues is straight up golden age hip hop and R&B. The competition will have two major categories – professionals and amateurs – and a jury of six key members will vote and shortlist the top 100 photographs to be featured inside the coffee-table book.

Entries do not have to be a recent photographs, so if you have parents or grandparents who’ve lived here for a long time, have a dig through their old photo albums and shoeboxes. If you come across an archival photograph, you can submit it for the competition, too. The Dubai-based artist has brought pops of colour to walls across the UAE and beyond with her exciting champagne and perfume bottle collection. Now she’s expanding further… ART

rish artist Anna McKeown only ever saw herself working in the creative sphere. She studied Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art, before working as a teacher for the best part of a decade. But three years ago her desire to create her own paintings returned and Pop & Toast (popandtoast.org) was born. My inspiration stemmed from the ‘champagne lifestyle’ of Dubai. I began to create these fun bottle paintings, embracing a unique colour palette and

incorporating energetic marks to reflect their glamour. They definitely reference the glitz of the Dubai lifestyle, which seemed to touch a nerve with people. I love that each bottle has a different meaning for every client. Each bottle depicted – whether champagne or perfume – reminds people of a particular time or place. Clients can even customise a painting to whatever bottle or colour pattern they want, making them extra special. Three words to describe my artwork would be: vibrant, energetic and fashionable. The neon undertones and Pollock-like splashes are now very much a signature of my style. I paint most days. When I do paint, I plug into music.

The combination of music and painting transports me and it feels like a kind of meditation. When a celebrity you admire commissions you work, it’s a pretty cool feeling. A few months ago, Vogue Williams asked me to create a gift for her husband, Spencer Matthews. It was a reworking of one of his CleanCo gin bottles. I also was commissioned by makeup guru Huda Kattan to create a perfume bottle for her sister. Both very proud moments for me. I am currently working with several distilleries across Ireland and Scotland. They want artworks for their headquarters. I also get commissions to create my bottle art for wedding days and special occasions.

When I started Pop & Toast nearly three years ago, the name grew out of the idea of popping a cork and making a toast. But, several years on, my brand has expanded dramatically. I now create artwork for perfume brands, magazine covers, iconic portraits and abstracts, so I’ve launched The Anna McKeown collection, where I’ll offer all aspects of an art project from consultation to installation, and especially bespoke art for residential and commercial spaces. Flash Entertainment continues its quest to champion musical talent from the region. Next up: Mougleta

s stage names go, Mougleta is certainly unique. The talented 25-year-old was given the nickname Mowgli by her parents for sharing the same traits as the lovable Jungle Book character. Growing up, she recalls moving around a lot and not feeling like she belonged anywhere. The UAE-born singer has lived in Beirut, Boston, Dubai, Toronto and, now, Berlin – with each city holding a special place in her heart. It is in these cities that she draws her inspiration. From music in taxis on the streets of Beirut, to the late-night rush of Toronto’s Entertainment District, Mougleta’s musical jungle tells empowering tales of heartbreak, happiness and dreams. How did you first get into music? I started singing at four years old. Music was always around me; my dad played the drums and my mother had a beautiful voice. She used to sing to me all the time. How would you describe the music that you make? This is always tough to answer. I feel that all of my life experiences have moulded my sound. It has many influences. It’s a collective of hip hop, soul, pop with a hint of the Middle East. What are your latest musical accomplishments? 68_What’s On

Firstly, releasing my own solo singles like Hold my Cup, Valentino Rossi and Yeah, which was a top 50 song in the German charts. I’m also really proud of my collaborations with the likes of Kpop sensation, Oh my Girl, and renowned German DJ Kianu Silva on Rocket Ride, multi-platinum DJ/ producer, Topic with Talk to Me and the creator of the ‘90s classic Blue, Gabry Ponte, along with MOTi with Oh La La. I’m also proud of my sync projects where my songs were selected for movies, TV series and a national TV ad campaign for Kinder Chocolate. In 2020 my song Nice to Meet You was included in the soundtrack of the hit ABC American network TV show, The Baker and The Beauty, which is now available on Netflix. What is your creative process like? Has it changed since the pandemic? Everything I write is about my personal experiences. I collect sounds and words from the world around me. There’s

inspiration in everything. I prefer to work directly with creatives in a studio, but during the pandemic I had to compromise and use Zoom more. Where have you performed? What was your favourite venue to perform at? I really enjoyed my live performance at the Dubai Jazz Festival in 2017, when I opened up for the great Mariah Carey. I also performed live at college campuses in Beirut as well as various events and clubs in Berlin and Toronto. We were working on plans to tour North America before the pandemic hit, but we’re resuming plans as we speak. What are your latest releases? What is the story behind them? I just released my latest single Heartbeat. This one felt really good, especially during the making of the video. I felt like I was that nine- and 15-year-old performing on stage. I channelled that energy into this video. This is as close as it gets to who I am. Also,

if you’d like to know, I got some of my inspiration for this song from Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks and Scarface. Are you working with any other artists right now? Yes, I’m thankful for the opportunity to be working on projects with at least three major international artists right now. I can’t disclose too much information, but let’s say it’s going to be a busy and very exciting summer. What does your involvement in the Regional Artist Spotlight mean to you?

It’s always humbling to be recognised in the region where it all started. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to touring the region soon. Our room is high up on the 25th floor of the tower with an open space layout that, aside from the bedroom, included a dining space, living room and workspace. The best bit of all is the spacious balcony that bragged an unobstructed view of the Burj Khalifa and the fountains. Despite rising humidity levels, we found ourselves on the balcony to catch nearly each Dubai Fountain show that night.
