I WAS GOING TO FOREGO WRITING THIS ED’S LETTER.... ... this issue, and instead just print the lyrics to Phoebe Buffay’s Christmas song (sample: “Went to the store, sat on Santa’s lap, asked him to bring my friends all kinds of cr*p”). Yes, I admit, using a ridiculous holiday song from Friends might seem, well, a little ‘out there’, but hey, it’s Christmas. If ever I was going to get away with such frivolity it would be now, because it’s Christmas. Who cares what craziness LC is up to, it’s Christmas, and we’re all having too much fun. But then it occurred to me – Christmas is tonnes of fun for me because I have it so easy. It wasn’t me that had to go and collect a huge artificial tree and bring it home (thank you ACE Hardware for that). And it won’t be me who will be buying in all the stuff needed for a huge Christmas dinner, then spending all day cooking it (thank you UAE five-star hotel brunch). And, yes, we do have lots to do at work at this time of year, but I also have an amazing team around me, working non-stop to produce brilliant editions of What’s On, and your daily dose of festive news on WhatsOn.ae, so a big thank you to the team, too. Luckily, we’re never ones not to share the love here at What’s On, and once again we’ve come up trumps for you, too, to help make your festive season a little more easier and fun. How long have you lived in the UAE and what inspired you to move here? We arrived from Geneva in 2010. At the time I was a senior private banker covering East Africa. My best friend and sister were living here and I thought that life would be nicer in the sun and Dubai offered many more entertainment and activities to all the family. I always loved the energy of Dubai. How and why did you make the switch from banking to creating Sonara? After my fourth child, I stopped working for a few years. That time allowed me to self reflect and I made a list of what I like to do and what I am good at doing. I love to organise, plan parties, create, share and decorate. I always enjoyed taking my kids to the desert but the options were limited. Either you could go to a tourist camp or you do it yourself. The latter is so much work, and not my style.

“I STARTED NARA WITH TWO COUCHES, A TABLE AND A TENT JUST FOUR YEARS AGO” To the uninitiated, who are you and what’s made you UAE Famous? I am a woman, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a friend and now an entrepreneur. I create unique experiences and I chose to start my journey in the desert. I created Nara Desert Escape, a private and exclusive eco-friendly desert camp almost four years ago, followed by Sonara Camp, a restaurant safari in the heart of the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

How does Sonara stand out from other desert experiences? We are a new desert safari concept; we offer flexibility, customised experiences, great food and good wine. I don’t like

to compare us with others who are more geared to tourism. Our motto is: “Just ask and Nara will make it happen.” You won the award for best newcomer at the What’s On Awards 2020. How did that feel? Amazing. I am so proud of all my team that made it happen. My team and I are very united. Together, we created the concept from scratch, and to receive this recognition was truly an honour. I started Nara with two couches, a table and a tent just four years ago and to see my vision grow so fast is really motivating me to go even further. What’s one thing you wish people knew about Sonara? That it is really a challenge to prepare and serve an amazing dinner in the middle of the desert powered by Solar panels. What do you love about the UAE? I love the people, the energy, the climate, the possibilities and that the city offers. And what annoys you? The image that people abroad can have about Dubai being superficial. It is a new city with an incredible vision and so many facets. What’s next for you and the brand? Sonara in RAK and Sonara’s Nest in Dubai will open soon. I’m so excited about these new projects. I can’t wait to share more news so stay tuned for more of Nara’s adventure. q nara.ae

ack in 1971, when the UAE was founded, Sheikh Zayed Road was the Abu Dhabi Road and was just two lanes. There were a tiny handful of hotels, there was no Marina, and – gasp – there was no What’s On. It’s safe to say that things have changed since then. Thanks to incredible foresight by the founding fathers and the determination and creativity of its early dreamers (among them, our own managing partner and group editor Ian Fairservice, who, in 1979, started the UAE’s first English Language magazine that you currently hold in your hands), the UAE has grown at breakneck speed. Modern airports were built by the world’s best architects on the back of the oil boom, while in 1985 Emirates

Airline was launched and changed the face of the world’s aviation sector. By 1990, less than 20 years after the UAE was formed, its football team would appear at the World Cup for the first time. By 2010, the UAE was home to the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa. By 2021, the country had sent a probe to Mars, and as we write this, we’re in the midst of hosting the world’s greatest show at Expo 2020. Now, the country, and its people, are in party mode, celebrating its Golden Jubilee with events and activities across the nation. But if the past tells us anything, it’s that the UAE’s leaders won’t stop laying the groundwork for the next 50 years, and here at What’s On, well, we can’t wait to see what’s next…

What’s On founding editor Ian Fairservice recalls the UAE in the 1970s

arrived in the UAE in January 1978 when I was 21 years old. A hotel management graduate, I moved from Assistant Manager of the wonderful Grand Hotel in Eastbourne to take up a similar role in Dubai’s second five-star hotel (The Excelsior, now a Sheraton). My earliest memories are of the whiteness and flatness of it all. With so few buildings and even fewer roads, those are the two characteristics, which I recall. The Arab world had always fascinated me. I grew up reading ‘war comics’ and always favoured those centred on desert encounters; the Foreign Legion, the Desert Rats et al. As my tastes matured I moved on to TE Lawrence’s Seven Pillars of Wisdom and anything by Wilfred Thesiger, who I eventually

had the honour of becoming extremely close to, and his publisher from 1989 until his death in 2003. Back then, the only printed media here was the Recorder News Bulletin, which was run off a Roneo [mimeograph] machine, stapled together and sold at traffic lights. It was basically one-day-old news lifted straight from a Reuters teletext machine in Sharjah! If I wanted to advertise the hotel, I’d have to make 5,000 copies of my own leaflet, drive to Sharjah, which was a long way on not very good roads. I’d then have to pay a sizeable sum in cash for them to staple my leaflets into the bulletin. Radio was in its infancy and television was being tested out for a few shows a day. I recall watching MASH and Emergency Ward. Exciting times, indeed. After just over a year at the hotel I decided to quit my short-lived hospitality career and launch What’s On, the region’s first English language

magazine. Expectations were not high from the public and I think we surprised readers and advertisers with the quality of what we were able to produce, even when the magazine was in its infancy. I’ve been privileged to spend almost 45 years in the UAE, witnessing the incredible development of this remarkable country and through our magazines – and more than 250 books – helping to document its history. t says something about Emma Raducanu’s status in the world right now that the announcement of her appearance at the upcoming Mubadala World Tennis Championship garnered more column inches than news of Rafael Nadal’s attendance at the Abu Dhabi tournament. Even the presence of a 20-time Grand Slam winner who could one day become the sport’s greatest, has been somewhat drowned out with the exciting news that the 19-year-old Raducanu would play the UAE capital for the first time this December. Since her astonishing win at the US Open in September when, aged 18, she became the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam in the Open era, the youngest Grand

Slam winner since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004, and the first Brit to win a women’s Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977, Raducanu’s life has, to put it mildly, taken a new direction. There was the Met Gala in New York at which she wore a gown by Chanel, then the world premiere of the James Bond flick at the Royal Albert Hall in London when she dazzled in Dior. Raducanu, who just turned 19, played tennis with Kate Middleton in front of a swarm of press photographers and later inked a deal to be the face of luxury jewellery brand Tiffany and Co. Raducanu’s age, her ability to speak English, Romanian and Mandarin, and her arrival on the scene just as former great, Serena Williams, fades, are all seen as key factors why the British player could become the next household name of world tennis. Innovative tasting menus from visiting international Michelin chefs at Expo 2020

xpo 2020 is turning out to be a dining destination in its own right, where globallycelebrated chefs and local favourites collide. One new concept bringing both together is Jubilee Gastronomy. Situated on the ninth floor of the Media Centre, Jubilee’s schtick is offering up unique gastronomy experiences at its signature ‘Chef ’s Table’, where a rotation of both internationally celebrated, Michelin-affiliated chefs take up residency in between local celebrity chef postings. A word of warning: these chef ’s tables don’t come cheap. The prices for a nine-course dinner tasting menu come in at Dhs1,195 with soft drinks up to an eye-watering Dhs1,995 with wine-pairing, photo meetand-greet with the chef, and a commemorative gift box post dinner. We suggest taking on the condensed four-course lunch (from Dhs650) instead. Perks of the job, we managed to grab a spot at the nine-course dinner degustation experience when Chef Jordan Bailey was in town. The Cornwall native is the

head chef at Aimsir in Ireland, which earned the accolade of the fastest ever straight to two-star restaurant in the history of the Michelin Guide (in five months). His wine-paired menu took us through a few of his most celebrated dishes. There was a delicate oyster gently warmed in roasted koji butter with a thrilling lift of apple balsamic, and an incredible soda bread cooked in beef fat and served as a course of its own Chef with raw, heavily Jordan salted butter. At Bailey the heart of this

meal, an inch-thick seared duck breast finished with pine salt, was served by the man himself, who snuck in for a quick ‘hello’ to pour a gravy of five-year old cherry balsamic. It was good, in that rich, gamey way only duck can be. Not all are universal crowd pleasers. Young buck cheese with ripe fig topped with a crispy fig leaf and oil is challenging in texture and unfamiliar flavour combinations. But the finale, ice cream with a dandelion root sauce and biscuit ‘branches,’ was a delightful way to round off the night. As we walked back to the car park, we revelled in the evening’s experience. What a treat to feel like we’ve dined abroad, in the surroundings of a Michelin-starred restaurant, only to have never actually left Dubai. I guess that’s the true beauty of Expo.

CAVIAR KASPIA

Undeniably cool and adored by celebrities, but can it live up to its Parisian counterpart? o stand out in a crowded market such as DIFC, you need to bring something pretty special. Amongst a sea of fine dining hotspots, Caviar Kaspia has set out to inject Parisian cool with Russian glamour to Dubai’s coveted dining district. The exterior is definitely distinct, with chilling blue spotlights and an Art Deco entrance under a large blue banner that marks the restaurant’s heritage. Since opening in Paris in 1927, the brand has become synonymous with celebrity guests and hedonistic dining. Split over two levels, downstairs is formal and cosy, with thick carpet and heavy furniture surrounded by historical paintings in wooden frames. Blue-clothed tables are lit with dim table lamps as waiters effortlessly glide between them,

topping up drinks and recommending signature dishes. Of course caviar is a focus, but while many dishes feature the delicacy, guests can opt for plates without. One of the most popular is the Kaspia baked potato, which is served with a generous helping of caviar and eaten with a miniature ceramic spoon. We start with tuna tataki (Dhs85), which doesn’t feature caviar but does come with a delicious sesame oil and yuzu dressing. The yellowfin tuna is lightly kissed with heat to create a seared outline, and topped with fresh arugula. Another famous dish is smoked salmon served on a pancake, like a jumbo bellini. Guests can choose which salmon they prefer (from Dhs95), and the waiter will prepare it fresh to the table. Although Caviar Kaspia as a concept is designed on an individual basis, this one is great for sharing. Upstairs, the party starts pumping as the resident DJ provides an upbeat playlist that complements the buzz of conversation. There’s a semi-outdoor terrace and bar, plus more dining space for guests who want a livelier experience. Craving the pasta dish we’d seen posted all over Instagram, we order the tortiglioni

with Caviar Kaspia (Dhs285). Large tubes of deliciously creamy pasta arrive doused in 25 grams of Baer caviar. It’s a simple dish, sure, but oh so tasty. The humble baked potato is given a luxury upgrade with your choice of caviar (starting from Dhs380) or salmon roe (Dhs220). While it seems odd at first to eat such a nostalgic dish with ceramic cutlery, we’re all for being part of the Kaspia experience that has succeeded for almost a century. Before we make our way up to the second floor to continue the night in style, we have just enough time for a portion of pavlova (Dhs65) – another nostalgic treat. Crunchy, fluffy meringue is topped with a generous helping of berries and cream, making for the perfect light dessert to finish on. So, does DIFC have space for a new concept? Just about. ith the last episode of the Great British Bake Off aired, it’s time to grab the rolling pin and get stuck in, thanks to Bread Ahead Bakery. The Borough Market legends have set up shop in a lovely building inside the Mobility District at Expo 2020. Open daily from 10am, the new branch will be around for the duration of Expo 2020, serving up freshly baked pizzas and their famous artisan doughnuts. But most exciting is the launch of its Bakery School offering wannabe bakers the chance to learn how to bake with the team’s expert teachers, who offer classes in sourdough, bagels, pizza, biscuits, doughnuts and more. What’s On headed in for a masterclass in doughnut making, at the special Golden Jubilee baking experience. The humble doughnut has come a long way in recent years, from serving mainly as the basis for cop jokes to an object of

obsession, and our lives are richer and more carb-filled for it. Under the expert guidance of master baker Kyle Cowes, we mixed, kneaded, cut and rolled our buttery dough into near perfect spheres. Then, as our dough proved, we watched – with eagle eyes – how to make wobbly black current jam. We fried our little spheres altogether, sprinkled them with extra sugar and stuffed them with jammy, creamy

goodness, topping them off with a little edible gold leaf to give it that extra Dubai clout. The result? Half a dozen, gorgeously plump, sugarcoasted doughnuts and, despite its status as a calorific punch to the gut, all devoured in one happy evening. Workshops cost Dhs350 per person. The country that has had the biggest impact on my culinary skills is Italy. It’s where I’m from, and somewhere I was fortunate enough to work. I have also travelled to different parts of Italy and discovered its incredibly rich culture. The ingredients I couldn’t live without? That’s easy – olive oil and tomato. A famous chef that I would like to have cook for me? Marco Pierre White. Isola is devoted to the culinary traditions of Sicily, Sardinia, and Capri. We marry that with Mediterranean-style hospitality that’s stripped-down with no gimmicks or tricks – just fine coastal Italian cooking. It should make you feel like you’re in the Italian Riviera. Does the popular bar do brunch as well as it does cocktails? Siddharta Lounge has long cemented itself as a classy cocktail bar and brilliant alfresco venue. But for many years, it seems its owners were reluctant to open itself to Dubai’s brunch crowd. Until recently, that is. Its October-launched, three-hour brunch is the perfect opportunity for guests to experience Siddharta Lounge at a capped price (as paying a la carte can get a little costly). And, with the soft drinks package priced at Dhs350, wine and beer at Dhs450, and Dhs550 for premium drinks, it’s an average-priced brunch. Tables are spread out next to the pool and outdoor bar, and the overall setting feels chic, but the music is so loud that we struggle with much table conversation. Thankfully, our mouths are kept occupied with an excellent antipasti platter, which is piled high with cold cuts and bread, a delightfully creamy burrata, bright red cherry tomatoes, an endive salad and tuna tataki. Oysters with dry ice are served with aplomb, but in addition to the platter, they aren’t wholly necessary. Mains are also a big tick, with something to suit every

palette, from the tender Wagyu short rib to moreish pappardelle pasta, punchy chili chicken and the branzino fillet. A generous helping of ice cream, cheesecake, golden churros, espresso panna cotta and seasonal fruits leave us fit-to-bursting, but oh-so satisfied. Entertainment is hit and miss, with the addition of sequin-and-feather-clad dancers unfortunately erring on the side of cheesy. Hiding behind another business ( La Cantine Du Faubourg, in this case) is a new and exciting concept for Dubai, but Gohan can’t conceal the crowds waiting to win entry to its small windowless barroom. Inside, dimly-lit cube lanterns, red hues, low-ceilings, and occasional intimate DJ shows create a slick Tokyo meets Flat Iron New York speakeasy aesthetic. Once inside, diners will experience elegant Japanese street food with a refined menu of skewers, sushi and gyoza, that use

top quality ingredients, throwing the likes of fois gras and caviar into the mix to up the dishes to Dubai ‘high life’ level. We thoroughly enjoyed the rich – and tableside-prepared – Wagyu truffle maki (Dhs110), the sticky and spicy chicken wings with sesame and chili (Dhs42), and the indulgent chicken and foie gras gyoza served with delicate yuzu dashi dressing (Dhs75). The highlight was perhaps the tender octopus kushiyaki (Dhs45), coated in an almost gummy ginger butter. The drinks menu, unlike the food menu, is vast, with an enormous variety ranging from sake by the carafe to wines by the bottle, while the separate menu of seven signature cocktails, inspired by the seven lucky Gods of Japan, fuses unique blends with aromatic herbs and spices that seem to all pair seamlessly with the food. A proper pantomime has finally come to Dubai – oh yes it has!

or many, Christmas just isn’t Christmas without a panto, and thanks to Studioworx Productions in Partnership with Art For All, Dubai finally gets its first big-time pantomime: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs playing at the Theatre at Mall of the Emirates from December 14 to 28.

The pantomime follows the traditional fairytale of princess Snow White as she flees the clutches of the Wicked Queen and encounters some interesting characters along the way. Packed to the rafters with music, laughter, professional choreography and that extra special showbiz magic,

the show has Hollywood producer, Carol Wilson, and Dubai’s nightlife king, Chris Wright, at the helm. Along with a brand new script (and some of that Dubai flair), you’ll enjoy all of the much-loved aspects of the traditional panto complete with a starstudded cast. THE WICKED QUEEN LAURA ANDERSON Dubai resident and star of hit British reality TV series Love Island, Laura Anderson stars as the pantomime’s mega villain Tell us about the character you’re playing I am the Wicked Queen. I’m really excited to play an evil character as I’ve heard it’s way more fun. For my first panto I think it will help my nerves to throw myself into the role and be as dramatic as I can. I think I’m doing my job correctly if I get a lot of ‘boos’ from the audience. Is there anything in her nature that you can relate to? Hmm, I’m not usually into poisoning Disney princesses but I’m partial to talking to myself in the mirror on occasions. I’m probably not similar on the surface but perhaps the queen is misunderstood and just wants to be loved like the rest of us. We’ll see by the twist at the end if you all like me. How are preparations going? Right now, we all have our

scripts, so Dane and I have been practising our lines together. He’s done a few [shows] before and is really helping me and boosting my confidence when I need it. I’m not sure I could do it without him. What do you love most about the festive season? Just how sociable and happy everyone is. We all become our inner child, which is always fun. It just feels like a magical time and anything goes. Your house is sparkling inside and out and chocolate is allowed even for breakfast – what’s not to love? Why should everyone come and see the show? The cast, set and production are all incredible. We’ve definitely put a modern twist on things and the song list will definitely have everyone on their feet. There are also very ‘Dubai’ specific jokes that we can all relate to over here. Panto brings family, friends, and strangers together. It’s a tradition to get us in the Christmas spirit. I feel really lucky to be a part of the family so get your tickets early and don’t miss out.

Tell us about the character you’re playing The Huntsman is a great character to play. He’s obviously a bit of a baddie – who’s been ordered to kill Snow White – but deep down he doesn’t want to be. He really just wants to please the queen… What makes Snow White such a good pantomime? I love most pantomimes but Snow White is just a great classic, with just the right amount of evil villains and lovable heroes. We’ve got a funny script, too, with lots of brilliant moments for kids and adults.

Your partner in real life, Laura Anderson, plays the Wicked Queen. How fun is it performing with your other half? It’s the first time we’ve actually worked together, but it’s good fun. We get to help each other out with scripts and rehearsing songs, which is pretty handy, although I’m sure our dog is fed up of listening to us. What do you love most about the festive season? I’m a massive fan of Christmas. I love playing games and watching Xmas movies with the family. This year, my whole family is flying over so it’s going to be amazing. You’re recast as one of the dwarfs, which one are you and why? I know that Laura would definitely say I’m Grumpy… no idea why.

On getting back into character “When you get to revisit a story like this, you have to place yourself into the emotional state of who the character is. How do they think? How do they feel? Then you put on the costume. That becomes the exterior that you fill in.” On filming during Covid “Everyone loves the project, you know? We’re scrappy and we think on our feet and that spirit is alive and well on set. There were some really thoughtful and effective protocols, which meant that the rhythm of filmmaking wasn’t impacted.” On the script “It’s a beautiful script that is a love story. It’s inspiring. It’s also another version of a kind of call to wake up and it has some great action.” On who would win in a fight between Neo and John Wick “They wouldn’t fight. The first Matrix movie was a watershed moment in cinema. It snatched the concept of Cartesian dualism from the hands of philosophy lecturers, wrapped it in trenchcoats and sold it back to us with an evolutionary leap in CGI and visual storytelling. It was a masterpiece. The leads from the original, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, return, despite *spoiler* dying at the end of the last movie. In the trailer, Neo (Reeves) knocks back blue pills as prescribed by his shrink, played by Neil Patrick Harris. But after being freed from the shackles of virtual servitude, Neo resumes his rage against the machines. Can this movie live up to the original? On brand for the franchise, the trailer poses more questions than it answers. We skim across the surface of the film’s brooding metaverse like a stone hoiked across breakwater. You might feel like that’s a large spoonful of mangled analogy, but if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know, there is no spoon…

What we know: Zendaya is back as love interest MJ; Jacob Batalan is back as Peter’s BFF, Ned; Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) features, presumably filling in for Tony Stark as mentor; and we know for sure the villainous quartet of Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Thomas Haden Church and Rhys Ifans reprise their Spideyverse roles as Dr Octopus, Electro, Sandman and Lizard respectively. But what about these rumours of multiple Spideys? With a villain cast that ominous, Tom Holland could probably do with some web slinging support from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Well, there was the cast and of course the incredible soundtrack. Oh, and the humour was spot on. We also adored the heartwarming quest that drove the story. Then there was the characterisation, musical mash-ups, message and individual scene set pieces. Ok, look, we genuinely loved it, and the trailer for this followup film definitely seems to be leaning in the same direction. It’s coming from the team who created the Despicable Me series, who

have form when it comes to sequels.

Did we want a prequel? Does anyone ever really want a prequel? Regardless of our collective opinions, The King’s Man, set during the dawn of the 20th century, is coming. It describes the origin story of the veiled Kingsmen spy agency – one man (Ralph Fiennes, whose casting feels like an inevitability) and his protege (Harris Dickinson) must stand tall against a cabal of nefarious tyrants (including, rather excitingly, Rhys Ifans as Rasputin), plotting a war with the intention of wiping out millions of lives. Reaching new heights Flash Entertainment continues its quest to champion regional music talent with its Regional Artist Spotlight. Next up: Tamtam

audi Arabian singer and songwriter Tamtam is based between Los Angeles and Riyadh. At just 13 years old, she relocated to California as her parents wished her to see the world through many different eyes. Since then, Tamtam has been channelling all her life experiences into her passion, becoming an emblematic bridge between the Middle East and the West through her passionate, honest and genre-defying music. From helping promote the Saudi breast cancer awareness organisation founded by Princess Reema bin Bandar, to writing about being a female artist in Saudi, Tamtam continues to shed light on topics close to her heart… How did you first get into music? As a child, I was always listening to Western music. At around 11, I discovered my own voice. I started taking voice lessons and joined in school musicals. Then, during a summer in college, I met a family friend, Zahed Sultan. He’s a producer who I started to work with. That’s when I released my first song Little Girl. How would you describe the music that you make? I love making music that bridges the worlds of pop and hip hop with trap elements and Arabic instruments.

Who are the artists, or people, who inspire you? Some of the artists I’m really inspired by at the moment are Banks, Post Malone, Lana Del Rey, Aeris Roves, and Fairuz (always). What are your latest musical accomplishments? To name a few, releasing my single and video for Ismak, performing at Expo 2020 Dubai, and being a part of the XP music conference in Riyadh, taking place this month.

What is your creative process like? I love to sit at the piano and write. When I first started writing and making music, I didn’t play any instruments. I would just sing the words with melodies that came to my mind, and I recorded the ones I liked. Working in the studio with a producer is a bit of a different process. They usually start the beat based on the vibe we want and the inspirations we play to each other, and then I write melodies over that.

What has been the biggest obstacle of your career? Me being completely comfortable with who I am, and confidently sharing that with the world. It’s normal to have concerns about what others might say or feel, but I’ve worked on myself to focus on listening to my body and my gut, when it comes to making decisions. This has changed everything for me, and I hope my story can help people become comfortable with themselves. I know the world would be a better

and more peaceful place if everyone paid attention to their intuitions. Where have you performed and what have been your favourites? Kuwait Rising was an amazing music festival I performed at. The energy was insane and the crowd were singing along, it was so beautiful. I’ve also performed at The Peppermint Club and Hotel Café in LA a few times – they were really fun. Performing at Expo 2020 Dubai this year was an incredible experience, too. What are your latest releases? My latest release Ismak is a song about accepting all parts of yourself, and embracing your identities, whatever that may be. Earlier this year I was featured on a track by Dioscures called Back to, it’s one of my favourite songs. It’s about following your passion without losing your

home, or sense of peace. Before that, I released a song called Heartsick with Saud, a producer from Saudi during the pandemic. It’s about the whole world being sick, and learning to heal. Which one of these releases is your favourite? Ismak is my favourite so far, and I’m excited for the EP to come out next year with my other new songs. These songs mean a lot to me because the lyrics are honest and personal. I worked with incredible people on the project who inspired me to dig deeper and elevate my sound. I’m grateful to my creative director Mohamed Sqalli, music producer Malca, the video directors behind Bleu Nuit, the stylist Latifa Bint Saad, Deema Sabbagh and Sacha who co-wrote Ismak with me, my managers and team Yanin Gonzalez and Mohamed Sqalli. There are so many more people who contributed to the project –I feel very blessed.

Are you working with other artists now, and do you have any dream collaborations? Right now, I’m focused on my releases, but I’ve worked with amazing artists such as Dioscures and Shobee and I hope to collaborate with them more. Malca, who produced the songs on the EP, is also an artist, and I love collaborating with him. Other producers who are involved are Luke Walton and Brandon Woodward – they are in a band called Fein, and I hope to keep working with them as well. I’m so lucky because it’s already a dream come true to be working with these creatives. It would also be a dream to work with The Weeknd, Lana Del Rey, Post Malone... to name a few. Describe an average day? Wake up, pray/meditate, and have a coffee. I try to workout at least four times a week. Then I answer emails and have breakfast. I do my voice lesson and practice piano. If I have a

performance coming up, I practice in front of a mirror (the more comfortable you are performing in front of yourself, the better you’ll be at performing in front of others). Some days I have meetings. Other days, I have writing or studio sessions. What are your other interests? Being outdoors. I enjoy hiking, skiing, and surfing. I just love doing things outside and appreciating nature. Even simple things like walking around whichever city I’m in, and discovering new places. What does your involvement in the Regional Artist Spotlight mean to you? I’m so honored. To me it means that I get to share my music and message with more people in the Middle East, and it gives me an opportunity to connect on a deeper level with my listeners.
