It’s been one heck of a year. One full of Zoom calls, virtual pub quizzes, meltdowns and masks. Don’t tell anyone, but I actually really missed the office, and all the banter that goes with it. Honestly, a day without hearing our man Miles impersonate a celebrity really is quite miserable. We’ve seen our favourite restaurants, bars and hotels endure a hard year; small businesses have closed; big businesses have closed. We’ve gone to too many leaving dos, and grimmaced through far too many nasal swabs. But there’s been a lot of good stuff packed into the last 365 days, too. There have been extraordinary tales of creativity, resilience and spirit across all sectors, from fun new food kits and delivery pivots, to the amazing companies that have directly helped frontline workers and those affected by the coronavirus. It’s made me proud to live here and share those stories. As you’re reading this, chances are you’re in the UAE for Christmas, much like the team at What’s On (pictured above in our M&S festive best). If that’s the case don’t panic, we’ve got everything you need to know to make the holiday season a great one, from festive feasts and NYE parties, to fun family UAE adventures. Let’s end the year on a high, right? Enjoy the issue, happy holidays – and see you in 2021.

t the end of each year, we take the opportunity to reflect on what has come and gone in the city. While 2020 brought us many unexpected challenges and surprises (new face accessories being one of them), Dubai’s ever-changing restaurant landscape evolved at lightning pace. We lost some great eateries along the way that may be gone but are not forgotten. Here are our most notable new openings, and saddest closures of 2020‌ What’s On_49
Great views!
CÉ LA VI
ROKA
Firmly positioned as the first big opening of the year, this Singapore export was met with much hype when it launched in Address Sky View. With unbeatable Burj Khalifa views, an inventive menu and sophisticated evening vibe, Cé La Vi has gone from strength to strength over the last 12 months. We’re excited to see what the restaurant will bring in 2021. q celavidubai.com
Zuma founder Reiner Becker’s second Dubai project launched in March this year. Roka offers a more casual take on Japanese cuisine, using the same methods as its sibling concept, with more affordable ingredients. The open-plan space offers bright lunches and atmospheric dinners, complemented by a cosy outdoor terrace with Burj Khalifa views. q rokarestaurant.com
We’ll miss the ladies’ night
BARBARY DELI & COCKTAIL CLUB
RAMUSAKE
Making it to almost three years in Dubai, this unexpectedly sophisticated Tecom bar was a favourite for many. The venue closed as per government guidelines in March, however it never reopened and will be now replaced by Spanish tapas restaurant, Lola’s Taberna.
Popular DoubleTree by Hilton JBR hotspot Ramusake sadly closed its doors earlier this year. The bar was regularly packed on a Wednesday thanks to its stellar ladies’ night deal. Ramusake also had a stunning outdoor terrace which was perfect for dinner and drinks on a winter evening.

MAINE LAND BRASSERIE
KOKO BAY
Opening just as the city emerged out of lockdown couldn’t have been easy for Maine founder, Joey Ghazal, but miraculously he pulled it out the bag. We challenge you to try and get a table last minute (spoiler: it won’t happen). The beautiful venue offers a grand, luxurious yet comfortable space, perfectly suited to its home in The Opus by Zaha Hadid. q themaine.ae
Bali-inspired beach restaurant KoKo Bay opened to much fanfare this September. The first restaurant to open on Palm West Beach offers incredible sunset views, and you’ll be lucky to get a table to see them as it gets booked up way in advance. The menu serves up a variety of cuisines, from pan-Asian to barbecue, along with an extensive cocktail list. q kokobay.co
COPPER DOG
AL HAMBRA
Neighbouring Scottish bar and pub, Copper Dog, fell under the same management as Ramusake. Word on the grapevine states that they have plans for the two venues to merge and reopen at a later date, so we’ll have to watch this space…
Authentic Spanish restaurant Al Hambra was a popular spot for tourists and residents in Jumeirah Al Qasr. It offered a variety of Andalusian cuisine, including a variety of paella dishes, but closed earlier this year and didn’t reopen again.

RUYA
KIZMET
Turkish spot Ruya was popular thanks to its extensive food menu, weekly brunch and tempting ladies’ night deals. The Grosvenor House restaurant also offered brilliant views of Dubai Marina, until it closed its doors in May.
Dubai Opera’s neighbour and Instagrammable pre-show dinner spot, Kizmet Dubai, has been labelled as temporarily closed since March. We’re still holding out hope that the spot will reopen, as we loved Kizmet’s stylish interiors and creative cocktail menu.

With a whopping 31 Michelin stars across his restaurants, Joel Rubuchon lent his name to a Dubai restaurant for the first time. With his protégé heading up the kitchen, the fine-dining spot is as fancy as you’d expect and is found within DIFC. While the competition in the area may be tough, only time will tell if the brand new restaurant can stand out amongst the rest. q atelier-robuchon.ae

BURGER & LOBSTER
MORIMOTO
You can still get your Burger & Lobster fix on Deliveroo, but the physical DIFC spot has closed its doors. The restaurant has hinted at a relocation, though, but the new venue remains a mystery for now.
When the city reopened for business in September, sadly popular Japanese restaurant Morimoto didn’t follow suit. A new concept did take its spot though Asian/Peruvian spot Mami Umami now occupies the space in Renaissance Downtown Hotel, Dubai. What’s On_53

Clap Dubai
Bla Bla
Sleek Japanese bar Clap will be taking residence in DIFC this month. Originally from Beirut, the Dubai version will have a fun Manga-themed bar as well as an inventive dining menu. In Lebanon, the restaurant is famed for its epic views so we’ll have to see if the DIFC edition will compete.
Set to welcome guests this month, new pool/restaurant/club Bla Bla will take JBR’s beachfront by storm. The brand new concept is huge, with no less than 20 different bars under one roof. Food-wise you’ll find Italian and Japanese restaurants plus a smokehouse, all with incredible views of the soon-to-launch Ain Dubai.
Zeta, Address Jumeirah Resort The second edition of gorgeous outdoor restaurant Zeta will be on the rooftop of the new Address Jumeirah Resort in JBR. Set to open in-line with the hotel launch this December, Zeta will take pride of place on the 72nd floor, right next to the stunning infinity pool looking out to the ocean.

An all-in-one nightlife destination is coming to Habtoor City in March next year. Papa will have multiple themed bars, a restaurant and a nightclub all under one roof. So whether you’re in the mood for a botanical cocktail or relaxing in a gentleman’s bar, you’ll find it here.
With a legacy that dates back to the 1980s, B018 is a destination that’s all about the music. Its ‘sound ritual’ has become synonymous with Beirut’s late night scene and will soon be making its mark on Dubai. Set to open in Q1 of 2021, B018 The Sequel will be found on the outskirts of Dubai Marina. q @b018.dxb

BRASSERIE BOULUD
In a city teeming with celebrity chef restaurants, will Brasserie Boulud cut the mustard? alm Jumeirah has Bottura and Back; Dubai Marina has Rhodes and Colagreco; and Bluewaters has Ramsay. So how did Healthcare City just score one of Dubai’s biggest dining coups? French-born chef Daniel Boulud is best known for his two-Michelin-starred New York restaurant, Daniel, and a slew of brasseries as far afield as London, Singapore and Washington DC. For his first foray into Dubai, he’s opened Brasserie Boulud in the glitzy new Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk in Umm Hurair 2, right next to Wafi Mall. While the menu speaks to Boulud’s European sensibilities, the dining room is pure New York. Mirrored ceilings, tessellated marble floors, burgundy banquettes and grand columns offer a gentle nod to the 1920s, with a snaking chandelier that stretches the length of the restaurant. An open kitchen takes centre stage, where chefs move methodically about the space, slicing charcuterie, kneading pasta dough, and searing meat over leaping flames. Boulud is in town for opening week, and he’s in his element here, popping

between stations to taste this, test that, before turning to wave at diners. We’ve been invited along for the second night, but there’s no sense that the restaurant is finding its feet. Professionalism reigns, from the waitstaff to the kitchenhands, no doubt inspired by the grace and good nature of Boulud, who gently steers rather than commandeers the ship. There’s an effortless grace to the menu, too, which combines Boulud’s mastery of French and Italian cuisines with American largesse and the odd Arabic inflection. The hamachi starter (Dhs80) is pure class. Thinly sliced amberjack is artfully decorated with curls of shaved fennel, soft-set quail eggs, olives, tomatoes, green beans and earthy artichoke crisps. A jar of duck rillettes (Dhs85) is layered with shaved duck breast, pickled eschalot, sweet onion chutney and pomegranate seeds. Piled onto chargrilled bread, it’s soulful French cooking with polish. Of the mains, the sole Grenobloise is a standout – three lightly floured fish fillets are doused in
a luscious brown butter, lemon and caper sauce, with silken cauliflower puree and tiny florets of romanesco. It’s exceptional, to be sure, but the Dhs315 price tag may be hard for some to swallow. It seems particularly pricey when you consider that much of the menu is surprisingly (by Dubai standards) affordable, with most mains sitting between Dhs135 and Dhs175. Our final dish is a flawless chocolate fondant (Dhs55), topped with coconut ice cream to lighten the pudding’s intensity. It’s big enough – and rich enough – to share, especially as a complimentary plate of madeleines arrives soon after. For all the glamour of the dining room and precision of the staff, this is food with body and soul. You’ll want to come back to eat the Dhs95 burger at the bar. You’ll want to go all out for date night with seafood platters and wagyu steaks. You’ll only wish it was just around the corner… a Sofitel Dubai The Obelisk, Umm Hurair 2, Dubai. Is this Dubai’s most luxurious beach club? f there’s one thing Dubai’s not short of, it’s beach clubs. But when the city’s most iconic hotel reopened with its own offering, naturally it piqued our interest. Sal is Burj Al Arab’s new beach club, replacing Scape and The Terrace. Under the shadow of the coveted sail-shaped exterior, the large space is split up with two large pools and a man-made beach. Guests can choose between sun beds or a private air-conditioned cabana, complete with sofa seating and a TV. The main pool overlooks the Arabian Gulf, offering endless ocean views. We visited the new venue on a weekday to find it busy. Service was seamless, as friendly staff pre-empted our needs and were waiting with a towel as we emerged from the temperaturecontrolled pool. LANA LUSA
A real taste of Portugal right here in Dubai trip from the UAE to Portugal probably isn’t on the cards for a while. We suggest you avoid the nasal swabs and potential quarantining, and instead head down to Lana Lusa to get your fix of authentic food from this phenomenally underrated European country. Set within the new Wasl 51 development in Jumeirah, Lana Lusa is probably the most attractive restaurant that’s opened in 2020. Everything has been painstakingly custom made by Portuguese artisans specifically for the venue. From the colourful ceramic plates sourced directly from potters in Barcelos to the burnished copper light fixtures and cork-fashioned menus from Porto, we feel whisked away to a stylish neighbourhood café on the Bairro Alto. We particularly love the familial photos decorating the walls – a nod to founder Jessica Viveiro’s Portuguese past. Even the menu has been drawn up incorporating her grandmother’s recipes.

60_What’s On
Over the course of two delightful hours we sampled a range of unique and beautifully-presented dishes, arriving at pace in pretty plates, bowls, and miniature pans. You must eat bacalhau. The dried and salted cod is largely agreed as the national dish of Portugal, and can be eaten several ways. Three of them appear on Lana Lusa’s menu, so three of them we ate. We savoured them in croquette form (Dhs57) as a trio of dainty oval parcels; in a salad (Dhs72) with seabass and avocado chunks; and as bacalhau com natas (Dhs82), a gratinated pie with cod, diced potatoes, cream and parsley and baked until golden brown. The latter was easily one of the most heart-warming miniature fish pies we’ve ever had the pleasure of eating, and judging by the number of piping hot pans flying out of the kitchen, the feeling was shared among others in the dining room. We ‘mmm’d’ and ‘ahhh’d’ over other dishes, too. The prawns in garlic (Dhs72)
were tasty but the buttery sauce they lay in was sensational. So good, in fact that we left a tiny morsel of prawn in the claypot so the eagle-eyed waiter wouldn’t take it away without us soaking it up with bread first. Even the prego (Dhs42), a beef sarnie for one, is so simple yet so juicy we’re desperate to know its secret marinade. It would be a disservice to head chef Helio, owner Jessica, and probably the entire Lana Lusa team if you don’t finish with a pasteis de nata. We have waxed lyrical enough in past issues of What’s On about this perfectly creamy Portuguese custard tart, so take our advice and order one – heck order five and take the rest home. It’ll be the perfect breakfast treat with your morning coffee. a Lana Lusa, Wasl 51, Jumeirah 1, daily 8am to 11pm. f you could transport us anywhere in the world right now, it’d be to the cliffhanging restaurants of Amalfi, or the backstreet eateries of Rome. While our passports are safely stashed at home for now, we’re doing all of our ‘travel’ via the Dubai food scene. One recent trip we took was to La Cucina, the lively Italian restaurant-bar on Club Vista Mare. It’s Calore Brunch is one of the newer offerings in town – and on our visit it was as packed as sociallyresponsibly possible. Guests are greeted at the door with a martini spritz, which sets the tone for the afternoon. This is a brunch that puts quality drinks front and centre, especially if you opt for the (very reasonably priced) ‘Speciale’ package. For Dhs385, you’ll enjoy free-flowing prosecco, espresso martinis, negroni sbagliatos and more of those refreshing martini spritzes. The premium package also includes the spirits, wine and beers found on the house package (priced at Dhs285). It’s a good thing the food is as generous (and carb-loaded) as it is… Over the course of the afternoon, we’re served a procession
of crowd-pleasing Italian dishes, starting with a huge platter of antipasti, cured meats and grissini, bruschetta, and a top-notch fritto misto of prawns and calamari. Mains include a thin-crusted margherita pizza fresh from the woodfired oven, mushroom penne, and a delicate fillet of grilled sea bass. Bite-sized cannoli and brownies are the perfect hand-held desserts. The upbeat vibe comes courtesy of pitch-perfect tunes from the DJs (the organisers, Kristian and Dan, are DJs in their own right). It does get loud as the afternoon wears on, so if you want to avoid shouting to your dining companions, perhaps ask for a table at the other end of the restaurant. Once restrictions are lifted, we predict that Calore will evolve into an epic dance party. This is one of Dubai’s better value brunches. It may no longer be on the Entertainer, but they’ve slashed the prices to reflect that. a Calore Brunch at La Cucina, Club Vista Mare, Palm Jumeirah, Fri 1pm to 4pm. Can an immersive dinner-and-a-show replace a night on the dance floor? The announcement of Billionaire Dubai opening in Taj Hotel coincides with the city’s shift in nightlife offerings. Gone are the days of rubbing shoulders on a heaving dance floor. In are classy dinners and top-quality stage entertainment. Billionaire promises the latter, so we went to investigate. A word of forewarning: this is a late-night dinner spot, where revelries kick off from 9pm, and you won’t be eating mains ‘till gone 11pm. But Dubai’s night owls will be rewarded handsomely. Thick red theatrical curtains drape across much of the venue, while the main dining hall exudes a suave Prohibition era atmosphere. The evening’s entertainment has been devised by former Cirque Du Soleil director, Montserrat (Montse) Moré. Flawlessly choreographed, we’re treated to narrativeled dance routines, paired with vocals by three talented singers you won’t have seen in the usual Dubai spots. The highlight of the evening was an incredible contemporary dance performance to Andra Day’s Rise Up. The powerful performance was delivered effortlessly by the very talented male and female dance duo.
But it’s not just the entertainment that deserves rapturous applause. Chef Batuhan Piatti Zeyneloglu shares the spotlight, laying down a menu that flits between pan-Asian and traditional Italian, offering maki rolls in a variety of combinations, wagyu carpaccio and tomato gnocchetti, among others. As the night continues, the good vibes build, and it’s hard not to get up and join in. But, while Covid restrictions remain firmly in place, we’ll happily settle for a shoulder shuffle and a foot tap from the comfort of our seat. a Taj Dubai, Business Bay, daily from 9pm, a la carte. Catch British comedy legend John Cleese at Dubai Opera this month

n need of a laugh as 2020 draws to a close? We’ve got just the ticket. Legendary British actor, writer and comedian John Cleese is hosting an evening at Dubai Opera in December, bringing his signature smarts and withering wisecracks to the big stage. The one-man show, titled ‘Monty Python’s John Cleese – Alive! (Just)’ will be held on Wednesday December 16, from 8pm. During the 90-minute show, the beloved star of Monty Python, Fawlty Towers and A Fish Called Wanda will “examine the dysfunctional world we live in”.
Expect a hilarious evening filled with the acerbic wit and observations that have made Cleese a household name, from his beginnings in the Monty Python troupe in the 1960s, to his Oscar nomination for best screenplay for A Fish Called Wanda. Tickets to the show at Dubai Opera start at Dhs195 for silver seating and climb up to Dhs550 for a VIP ticket. There are also a range of exclusive boxes available, accommodating four to 10 people. The bar at Dubai Opera will open at 6pm and doors to the theatre will
close at 7.30pm, ahead of Cleese taking to the stage at 8pm. While Cleese is in Dubai, he’ll be working closely with the Motivate Talent team to produce training videos and host talks. Cleese will also be available to make special appearances and host after-dinner speaking engagements, within the present Covid-19 limitations. December 16 a Monty Python’s John Cleese – Alive! SHOWS
Passenger performs at Dubai Opera this month
B
ritish singer-songwriter Michael Rosenberg, more commonly known as Passenger, returns to Dubai, bringing his soulful folk-rock tunes to the stage of Dubai Opera for a matinee and evening performance on December 4. Renowned for his expressive lyrics and impassioned vocals, it’s hard to believe the singer was once a struggling musician whose solo career began in 2009 as a busker on the street corners of Britain following the split of his band. However, Rosenberg’s humble origins were soon transformed to worldwide success following the release of his 2012 multi-award winning single, Let Her Go, which took him from the streets to international stadia. His melancholic ballad achieved global success, reaching number one in 19
countries and to date has accumulated a staggering 2.8 billion views on YouTube. The smash hit also earned Passenger a Brit Award nomination for British Single of the Year in 2014 and won him the Ivor Novello Award for Most Performed Work soon after. Although there is no doubt that Passenger will be performing this soulful hit on stage, he will also be performing a selection of songs from his 12th studio album, Sometimes It’s
Something, Sometimes It’s Nothing at All, which sees him accompanied by a string quartet. As the show will be socially distanced, spaces are limited, so fans will need to be quick to get their hands on tickets, which are on sale now. Animals in Distress THE SUCCESS STORIES
Animals in Distress is a What’s On column profiling the amazing animal shelters, veterinary clinics, carers and the passionate team at Royal Canin UAE that work together to save the lives of stray animals in the UAE. Every month, Royal Canin UAE has pledged to cover the costs of vet bills for select animals in need. These are their stories… MEET MURPHY Calm and sweet Murphy was rescued by compassionate resident Kremena Ivanova, who noticed a large wound on his neck. She immediately took him to the team at Petzone Veterinary Clinic in Dubai, who deduced that the injury to his neck was most likely caused during a fight with another cat. The wound was severely infected and in need of urgent care. Dr Natascia Riccieri at Petzone Veterinary Clinic (petzonevet.com ) immediately took charge of caring for Murphy’s wound. Stitches helped close the gap, while Murphy was given pain medication and antibiotics. Once stable, he was neutered and vaccinated. Over the course of a few weeks, Murphy experienced daily follow-ups to check on
his wounds and general health, and is getting better everyday. He is receiving the care he needs thanks to Royal Canin UAE who have paid for all of Murphy’s medical bills and medicine.
MEET ANGEL In September, an injured desert pup, now named Angel, was rushed to Animal Specialist Clinic (facebook.
com/animalspecialistclinic) after being spotted by one of the volunteers from Stray Dog Centre in Ajman. The poor

girl had a huge wound around her tummy caused by a rope tied around her. As Angel grew bigger, the rope wrapped tighter eventually causing a deep and painful laceration. Preliminary blood tests taken at the clinic showed that Angel was in a stable condition. Her results were negative for the many infectious diseases seen in our stray dogs. But her injuries were so severe that she needed to be sedated for the team to remove the rope and clean her wounds. Next, was an X-Ray to check for any
permanent damage on her hind legs as the tightening of the rope forced her to walk with an unusual gait. Angel spent two weeks in hospital and had a nutrition plan in place to support her healing. She was given pain relief and antibiotics and received tick and worm medication. Thanks to Royal Canin UAE, all of Angel’s medical costs were covered. After a terrible ordeal, Angel has fully recovered and is now flourishing in her new foster home.

The Branding Room Opening during the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t put pamperFounder, Mae seekers off visiting this hidden gem in JVC Romero-Do Thanh
N
ew skincare hotspot, The Branding Room, opened its doors in July offering a range of indulgent facials, which promise to leave you with that all-important glow. And we’ve got to say, after drying out our skin in air conditioning during the summer months, we’re here for it. Using all the latest technology and techniques, the range of treatments available includes 30-minute express caviar collagen masks, radio frequency lightening, and brightening HydraCool Plus remedies. We’re greeted by a super-friendly team who offer us coffee and snacks as we sit down and wait for our brief consultation with the founder, Mae. It’s always a bit daunting in these scenarios to admit you’re a ‘once-a-day, quick cleanse and moisturise’ kind of girl, but there’s no judgement here. Mae suggests a few quick fixes for our skincare routine, like introducing a serum, but nothing that makes us feel too overwhelmed. We instantly fall in love with the toneddown decor of The Branding Room, which shuns the usual over-feminine vibe, and instead favours a comfortable and sleek New York loft style, with industrial grey flooring, interesting artwork and trendy mid-century seating. Time to settle in for some pampering as we meet our therapist, the lovely Bishnu. The next hour or so passes by blissfully as
our skin is thoroughly cleansed, exfoliated, massaged and moisturised. We’ve asked for gentle products and nothing too invasive due to our sensitive skin, and Bishnu is thoroughly mindful of this as she explains each step of our Probiotic facial (Dhs650) with care. We particularly appreciate the ultrasonic extractions, which painlessly whip-off those pesky blackheads of ours, while the face massage almost sends us off to slumber town. The CO2 jelly facemask is cooling and we’re treated to a hand massage while it does its thing,
all adding to the feeling of zen. We don’t know about you, but facials have never been high up on our to-do list when it comes to beauty treatments. But our experience at The Branding Room has shown us that as a monthly treat, this is a self-care moment that you don’t want to miss out on. a The Branding Room, Dana Road, District 12, JVC, Dubai, Sat to Thur 11am to 8pm.
