here’s little question that, since its launch 21 years ago, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship has become a calendar highlight for the UAE’s tennis fans. The two-week festival of tennis begins with the WTA 1000 competition, which will take place from March 7 to 13. Following what is sure to be a thrilling week, tennis fans can also look forward to seeing many of the world’s best ATP players when the men’s week follows from March 14 to 20. Those battling for the WTA title this year have won a remarkable 18 Grand Slam titles between them, with six players at one stage holding the world number one ranking. The star-studded field is headed by current women’s world number one Ashleigh Barty, who makes her Dubai debut.

Elina Svitolina The Ukrainian has a glorious record at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, winning the title in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 she was also a semi-finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open. In 2020, while playing a limited schedule, she won both Monterrey and Strasbourg.

The amiable Aussie not only won the 2019 French Open and reached the semi-finals last year in her home Grand Slam in Melbourne, but she is the recipient of Australia’s highest sporting honour, the Don Award.

Kiki Bertens The most successful female player to emerge from Holland, reaching as high as four in the world. Her most recent title was claimed last year in St Petersburg where she successfully defended her crown to win her 10th singles trophy.

pring is the season of adventure, and nothing has residents more pumped this year than the UAE wilderness and its amazing hiking trails. They’re beautiful, they’re all unique, and they get you outside. They are also free, which we can’t say was true for your Deliveroo order last night. Do yourself a favour: this month, go on an adventure and hit the trails. The Hajar mountains stretch for 700km through the eastern UAE to the north east of Oman and they run through six of the seven Emirates – phew, that’s a lot of exploring to do. Behold, some of our favourite places in the UAE to go hiking...

GREAT FOR: BEGINNERS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.103958, 56.039260 One of the closest hiking spots to Dubai, Wadi Shawka is just an hour away and it is a great beginner’s hike. Shawka has several varied routes. You can choose from a quick ramble or make a day of it and include the Shawka pools, too. Whichever you pick you’ll enjoy impressive, panoramic views. Head to the Shawka Dam and either take the stairs directly to the summit or choose one of the trails, easily visible from the small parking area. The trails are well marked out, making it difficult to get lost and safe for families with children. What’s On_19

Hatta Mountain Trails GREAT FOR: FAMILY-FUN HIKES DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 30 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 24.815061, 56.160270 Head to Hatta Wadi Hub to choose from five diverse routes spread over nearly 33km. Ranging from novice to arduous, there are trails for everyone. Hatta is Dubai’s largest national park, and with undulating rugged hills and wadis it is a photographer’s dream. The paths take you through farms, over dams, by the heritage village and up to the famous Hatta sign. This is one of the few hikes that have toilet facilities, so is perfect for families with young children.

Al Rabi Mountain Trail GREAT FOR: A DIP IN THE OCEAN POST HIKE DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 25 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.339488, 56.359157 Situated on the east coast, overlooking Khor Fakkan town and the Gulf of Oman, Al Rabi is known for its spectacular sunrise views. There are two summits along this path and between the two you will get a glimpse of the secret hidden beach. Though steep at 20_What’s On

times, the trail is suitable for most adventurers, including children and dogs. It takes about three hours to complete the 6km track. While there’s a small car park at Al Rabi Tower, it’s well advised to park down the hill in the long term parking.

Ain Al Sheria GREAT FOR: INTERMEDIATE HIKERS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 50 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.606302, 56.152161 One of the most colourful and historical hikes in the UAE is Ain Al Sheria in north-west Fujairah. Boasting stunning rock formations in vibrant russet tones and a vast boulder with ancient petroglyphs, it undoubtedly stands out as unique. The 8.8km trail is well marked, thanks to the recent efforts of Fujairah Adventures. However, this is a challenging hike and will require some prior experience. There are shelters for rest and shade, though most of the path is in the open sun, so don’t forget your sunscreen. The approaching road is in a rough condition and requires a 4x4.

UAE’S BEST HIKING TRAILS

Jebel Jais GREAT FOR: OUTSTANDING PANORAMAS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 50 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.903435, 56.140985 (LOWER TRAILS); 25.938134,56.131498 (UPPER TRAILS) The UAE’s tallest mountain, Jebel Jais is split into two hiking areas. The lower segment has five trails for varying abilities, starting from 0.8km up to 6km for the Samar trail. Hikes are well marked out but if you prefer to have some supervision, Beyond Action (beyondaction. ae), Challenging Adventure (challengingadventure.com) and Adventurati Outdoor (adventurati-outdoor.com) all offer guided tours. The upper trail is a bit more demanding with a steep start. However, the track is well defined making it difficult to lose your way. This path will lead you to the north and south summits, where you have outstanding vistas from the highest points in the UAE. Thanks to huge efforts from the Ras Al Khaimah government, Jebel Jais is a hub for thrill seekers. It also hosts the country’s highest restaurant, 1484 by Puro, named so after its height above sea level.

Mleiha GREAT FOR: PANORAMIC SAND DUNE VIEWS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 45 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.167183,55.841779 Stunning sand dunes meet the fascinating geological wonders of Fossil Rock at Jebel Mleiha. It starts with a mild hike and boulder clambering, before the real climb begins. There’s no set path so be sure to follow a Wikiloc App trail – you’ll find a number to choose from. Either head straight up and left, which will take you along the hair-raising ridge and down the far mountainside towards the desert, or up and right, which makes for panoramic views of Fossil Rock. Not recommended for children under 10 years. 22_What’s On

8 HIKING SAFETY TIPS 01 Always tell someone where you plan to hike and the time you expect to return.

Jebel Hafeet GREAT FOR: ADVANCED HIKERS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 50 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 24.098936, 55.748944 (GREEN MUBAZZARAH PARK); 24.055854, 55.798625 (JEBEL HAFEET DESERT PARK) Situated in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi’s only mountainous region, Jebel Hafeet offers a variety of rewarding hikes. The first begins at Green Mubazzarah Park, but due to covid restrictions, the park is currently only open from 5pm, so hikers are taking to reversing the hike and starting at the top. The alternative trek is the ‘smuggler’s route’ which commences from the Desert Park on the far side of the mountain. This path winds up through the rugged terrain offering fascinating views of the ancient burial tombs and the desert plains stretching out towards Oman. Both routes are considered intermediate with some loose rocks, therefore not advised for children or first timers.

Wadi Abadilah GREAT FOR: BOULDERING AND WADI DIPS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 30 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.440816, 56.196784 Approximately 20km north of Masafi lies the picturesque Wadi Abadilah. This trail leads you through agricultural farmland where you will spot banana trees, mango trees, date palms and more. While most wadis are running dry this year, with little rain, Abadilah still has some flowing streams and pools. If you are a keen nature observer, look out for snakes and lizards in this area. and the last-minute location change is a reflection of that. Thankfully, the Art Dubai team is keen to do everything they possibly can to support the communities at this time and remain confident in producing a physical edition of this year’s fair. The new purpose-built structure beneath the Gate Building in DIFC will house

around 45 galleries – including San Gimignano’s GALLERIA CONTINUA and TEMPLON from Paris – and will run for six days. This means more flexibility to visitors, while enabling the organisers to regulate the number of people attending, in accordance with the safety and social distancing measures. What’s On_31

Q&A What are you proudest to reveal this year? I am thrilled that we will be showcasing the region’s artists with an important platform to display and promote their work. On a more personal note, I am proud of the wonderful Art Dubai team who have been working relentlessly with our partners to deliver this year’s edition in challenging circumstances. What’s in it for the casual visitor? Discovering wonderful artworks from all over the world, and through them learning about different ways to read and interpret our reality. Art is unquestionably influenced by the world we live in, so visitors will have the opportunity to see how artists’ creations capture our recent reality. Now more than ever we have come to understand what a privilege it is to experience artworks in person, so the ability to visit an exhibition is one that should be cherished and we hope our visitors will enjoy it.

MEET THE DIRECTOR Art Dubai’s regional director Hala Khayat reveals her hopes for this year’s fair

This is your first year with Art Dubai. What do you hope to achieve? Art Dubai has played a central role in developing Dubai’s vibrant art scene, making a significant contribution to the cultural ecology of the region. It’s always been a unique convergence point and I’m excited about enabling artists to meet collectors by helping put on a physical event in a safe environment and supporting a sector which, like many others, has been impacted greatly over the last year. That is our aim. What’s different about this year’s fair? A lot! Although our mission remains, we have had to adapt to the current circumstances and will be following the highest safety protocols. We have developed a new app to help manage access to the fair and have redesigned the layout to ensure increased social distancing. In addition, we will be supporting participating galleries that may be unable to attend in person through a remote participation programme. This allows them to send their artworks to Dubai and we’ll facilitate all logistics and connect them virtually with fair visitors. Sounds like it’ll have more reach that way… We like to think that this edition of the fair will allow us 32_What’s On

French Riviera swagger on the banks of Dubai Creek ubai residents are a welltravelled bunch, so how do we cure our wanderlust when we’re effectively grounded? Fortunately, we no longer need a passport to be transported to the South of France, with Twiggy by La Cantine bringing French Riviera swagger to Old Dubai. Sitting pretty on the edge of Dubai Creek at the Park Hyatt Dubai, Twiggy combines a supermodel of a beach club with a stunning French-Mediterranean restaurant. It comes from the team behind Dubai hotspots La Cantine du Faubourg, Ninive and Lana Lusa, who bring their hospitality nous and on-point aesthetics to the fore. With its curvaceous infinity pool, private beach and breezy alfresco restaurant overlooking the water, Twiggy

is everything we love about destination dining, minus the airport queues. On the ground floor, sunworshippers take languid dips in the 100-metre pool, before topping up their tan on a sunbed, or seeking out the seclusion of a cabana. We skip the beach on this visit, instead heading upstairs to the sun-drenched terrace. Twiggy’s dining space is entirely alfresco (which may prove to be too hot to handle once summer sets in), but for now, this is one of Dubai’s finest spots for lunch. The sinuous terrace capitalises on those holiday-worthy scenes below, with a coastal colour palette of sand and cerulean blue, huge rattan light fittings, and market umbrellas providing some much-needed shade. Showcasing the sunshine-bright flavours of the French-Mediterranean, Twiggy’s expansive menu is made for savouring en plein air. It features a series of cold and hot starters, grills and seafood pastas, as well as a sushi selection that seems slightly at odds with the otherwise Euro-centric menu. To start, we share a delicate dish of lemony crab and avocado spooned into crisp lettuce cups (Dhs154), and wagyu

carpaccio with shaved parmesan and peppery rocket (Dhs88) – it’s a generous serve that needs to be scooped up quickly before it heats in the sun. Main courses include a faultless linguine alla vongole (Dhs145), with briny, oil-slick strands of fresh pasta, sweet vongole, and the pep of lemon zest, parsley and chilli. From the grill, we select seabass fillet (Dhs140), served simply with a little mop of samphire and a lemon-butter sauce. For dessert, pineapple carpaccio (Dhs82) is a deceptively simple dish comprising tissue-thin curls of pineapple formed into a giant sunflower. Finished with lime zest, passionfruit and a scoop of coconut sorbet, it’s the epitome of summer on a plate. CLAP

The new spot is creating some serious hype, but is it worth it? lap Dubai, the new Japanese restaurant by way of Beirut, is the latest open-air nightlife venue on everyone’s lips. Located on the ninth floor, it envelopes the highest spot in DIFC, and the open air space looks out across a shimmering Downtown Dubai. With the open-kitchen on one side, giving an insight into the culinary experts at work, and a large 360 degree bar on the other, Clap is alive with activity when we arrive. The bar is decorated with colourful Japanese figurines, complimenting a huge toy-chandelier, which hangs above the reception. Books are another prominent feature, used like bricks to build furniture around the venue. Contrastingly, the architecture is sleek and minimalistic. Wooden beams are used for decorative effect and the seating is made from dark rattan, sitting neatly under light-washed wooden tables. We kick off with a selection of cold starters, first sampling the wagyu beef tartare (Dhs160). The portion is generous and perfect for sharing, served with fluffy nori chips to help you scoop up the dense raw beef.

The wagyu beef tataki (Dhs225) was tender and perfectly cooked, however the accompanying tosazu dressing was a little overpowering. Meanwhile, the salmon volcano roll (Dhs72) is not only beautifully presented, but tastes just as good as it looks. The combination of crispy tempura flakes with sweet and spicy mayo had us tempted to order another. For mains, we’re told the stone bowl is a must-try. You can have it with scallops (Dhs160), Japanese wagyu beef (Dhs590) or lobster (Dhs291). For those unfamiliar with the concept (as we were), the stone bowl includes brown, white and black rice with your choice of protein and a few extra flavours. The server then pours piping hot broth onto

the dish, which instantly cooks it and makes the rice nice and crispy underneath. If you’re not a meat fan, you can also try the black cod miso Provençal (Dhs180). The Japanese twist on French flavours makes for an interesting flavour combination that we’re sold on. Finally, we had to see what the Clap hot chocolate cake (Dhs45) was all about. THE HIDDEN HOG A tucked-away European restaurant inside DIFC

ith construction by the lifts, a windowless venue in the Capital Club complex, and fierce competition from Dubai’s top restaurants a mere stone’s throw away, The Hidden Hog doesn’t start off on the right hoof. The décor – with dim lighting and wooden tables – felt a little more sports bar than modern bistro bar. That said, the barmen mixed fun gin cocktails, the service was very friendly and there was already a buzz about the place. One dainty parma ham croquette, crispy on the outside, gooey fondue on the in, was a clear indication of things to come – small portions of decent, non-halal dishes. Next, a plate of slow cooked loin tonnato was, in laymen’s terms, cooked loin with tuna sauce. It’s a northern Italian classic but a daring item to put on a menu as it sounds quite unappealing. The dish is more commonly made with veal, but since The Hidden Hog’s key selling point is its non-halal license, this surprise hit was thinly sliced with a creamy tuna mayo dressing, some caperberries and sweet paprika – a whole forkful of interest with every mouthful. We also tried three little parcels of meaty pumpkin ravioli dripping in delicious brown butter with

sage and pecorino. Tasty but small. The last dish was braised cheeks with mashed potato. The flavours were almost there, a thick and rich jus, tender chunks of meat (it needed more seasoning though), but the mashed potato was bland, and the presentation was lacking: a small chunk of meat sat on a splodge of mash. A brighter plate and some greens could have helped elevate the dish. You have to hand it to Luca Gagliardi, though. The Hidden Hog is a bold effort. The F&B stalwart is known for bringing to life some incredible concepts,

including the legendary Pierchic and R Trader, the gone-but-not-forgotten bar in the ill-fated Al Fattan Currency House. It seems the enigmatic F&B director never shies away from a difficult challenge, which The Hidden Hog most certainly is. We’d be keen to check out its full English breakfast offering (available daily from 10am to 4pm), complete with real bacon and sausages, but we hope for proper portions next time. a Floor 3, Gate Village 3, DIFC. TRESIND STUDIO Modern Indian dining as you’ve never experienced before

e must admit that you almost didn’t have the pleasure of reading this review. We were reluctant to revisit Tresind, the modern Indian dining restaurant on Sheikh Zayed, not because we didn’t enjoy our experience there five years ago, because we did. It’s just that we typically try to focus our attention on reviewing new restaurants, otherwise we’d be the size of houses. But, having been persuaded by a trusted friend to give it a go again, we walked out the door having learned a valuable lesson: Never underestimate the talents of chef Himanshu Sami again. Tresind Studio is the chef ’s table experience serving only 20 guests per service. It’s hidden behind a door in the

larger Tresind restaurant, and manages to be refined with its legion of well-trained staff and yet still deliver food with serious kick and intent. Chef Himanshu has chosen Le Jardind (Gardens of India) for this season’s menu, which means that the rectangular room looks a bit like a garden centre meets university dorm room with hundreds of potted plants lining the windowsills, complete with garish floral blinds. It’s a little kitsch for our taste but what matters is the strident, full-on food that embraces herbs and floral flavours within each dish. Over the course of the next two hours we’re treated to 13 jaw-dropping dishes (Dhs395 set menu), beautiful both in presentation and taste. The traditional pani puri is elevated to otherworldly levels as we’re presented with a tall vase of smoking cucumber liquid, which is poured into two delicate puffs. You can try eating them daintily but you’ll get the contents down your shirt. It’s far better to slip the whole thing in your mouth in one go. There’s the crunch and then the burst of fresh cucumber sweetness as well as the final kick that’ll make your eyes pop.

The star dish comes early amid the starters. Served in a beautiful black bowl filled with water and floating flowers rested a lamb tartlet topped with turnip, and nasturtium leaf. A delicious piece of art. From the curries the butter chicken broth is an outrageous cup of tangy yellow cloying goodness served with a charred yet tender chicken skewer. We slurp loud and proud enjoying each pungent swig. The chaat, eloquently placed on a plate surrounded by real roses, has an inbuilt culinary timer. You get the sweetness of the chutney and the fresh crunch of the fried bread fritter first, before the sudden punch of spice heat. We could go on describing each of the 13 dishes in detail but we wouldn’t want to spoil the culinary surprises of Chef Himanshu. A unique restaurant, a masterful gastronomic experience that’s worth returning to again and again. I remember women would gather to roll out dough for fresh pasta, and we’d help. Then we’d all come together to eat: cappelletti in broth, tagliatelle al la bolognese, etc. It was a truly gastronomic journey at a young age. After graduating from the Italian High School in Istanbul, I went back to Italy to continue my studies. The amazing Italian cuisine and my love of cooking led me to major in culinary arts. I work six days a week. The day begins with the arrival of ingredients, then meetings with the kitchen team and servers to explain the specials. Then it’s dinner service, and finally end of service, where we place orders for the next day. We’re very excited about Billionaire Riyadh. We’ve received more than a thousand phone calls a day for requests of reservations. We also have one of the biggest and most beautiful grills ever built in the world. Weslodge Saloon Poutine, fried chicken and piled-high pancakes Canada is a country that has given us many gifts, from tiny Timbits doughnuts to the warm smirk of Ryan Reynolds. Also, poutine. Poutine is the star attraction of Canadian cuisine and we adore these gravyand-cheese-curd-topped fries. We’re only human, after all. Thankfully, at the new Weslodge Saloon Friday brunch, you can have as much poutine as you like. Theirs is piled with pulled short rib, beef gravy and cheese – and it’s probably the key reason to visit Brunch on 68, especially right now. Just before we went for our visit, the brunch had to remove its live music schedule. A big loss because that was the hook differentiating it from other brunches around town: “the new place to hear live music,” the media releases promised. Sadly, that’ll have to wait until restrictions are eased, which is a real shame as the roster of singers looked fantastic. This meant, of course, for a more subdued brunch experience, where the food really had to shine. Thankfully, in most areas it succeeded, especially with the starters. The Weslodge chop with avocado, goats cheese and dill was surprisingly delicate for a hearty Canadian restaurant, as was the quinoa salad with pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Meanwhile the south fried chicken – the restaurant’s most popular dish – was another top dish of the day. The crispy skin

was doused in tabasco honey making for lip-smacking, sweet and spicy mouthfuls. We’d come back to eat that and a bowl of poutine any day. For mains, a steak arrived overdone (despite the medium request) while the whole sea bass with adobo chili was fine if a little forgettable. It’s also tricky to eat dishes like this when you’re sitting on a sofa slouching over a low table. We suggest going hard on the unlimited starters than saving tummy space for the mains. Desserts fared better and included a surprise plateful of Canadian pancakes drenched in salted maple syrup, as well as lemon meringue tarts and a fluffy baked cheesecake. All in all good food and friendly service, but the brunch lacked that Friday fun atmosphere. At the Mall of the Emirates branch, our lovely waitress, Sulaina, recommended the tangy Siracha mac and cheese (Dhs32), which was a finger-licking sidekick next to our two meaty burgers. The smokehouse turkey burger (Dhs64) was brimming with all-natural ground turkey, house spices, smoked cheese, kale coleslaw, crispy onions and a delicious white Alabama BBQ sauce. Meanwhile, the beastly new Philly cheese steak burger (Dhs64), features a mighty 200g patty, plus 200g of sliced steak with peppers and onions piled on top with American cheese. Good luck trying to pick that bad boy up – we had to resort to a knife and fork. For good measure we also threw in an order of pizza fries (Dhs50) mainly out of curiosity. After all, it’s two of life’s greatest foods combined into

one super snack. What could go wrong? As it turns out, marinara sauce and melted cheese make your chips a bit soggy. Finally, we tackled Black Tap’s new shake on the block. A mix of bubblegum, fruit skittles topped with gumballs, the Old School Drive is a hearty multicoloured shake. But that’s only the beginning. It comes in a glass rimmed with vanilla frosting, topped with the entire contents of the candy aisle: fruit sorbet ice lolly, gummies, rainbow popcorn and whipped cream. Sacha Jafri sets the Guinness World Records title for ‘The Largest Art Canvas’ in the world

ritish artist and Dubaibased resident Sacha Jafri has officially set the Guinness World Records title for ‘The Largest Art Canvas’ in the world, with his painting The Journey of Humanity, scaling over 17,000 square feet. It took Sacha seven months, 20 hours a day, 1,065 paint brushes and a whopping 6,300 litres of paint to create his extraordinary painting. The Journey of Humanity is part of his charitable initiative ‘Humanity Inspired’, supported by over 100 celebrities, which was launched under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Cabinet Member, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence in partnership with Dubai Cares and Atlantis, The Palm. The painting was created in Atlantis, The Palm’s ballroom, which was converted into the artist’s studio, where Sacha spent 28 weeks from March to September 2020 during the height of the pandemic. “It is an honour to receive the Guinness World Records title for my project The Journey of Humanity” said Jafri. Although, this is just the beginning of the ‘Humanity Inspired’ journey. It’s much more than a painting, it is my initiative for true societal change through the hearts, minds and

souls of the children of the world – a springboard for a better future for all humanity.” “If one person can spend 20 hours a day (on four hours’ sleep) for seven months continuously, creating a painting of over 17,000 square feet on his own, imagine what 7.5 billion people could do together if we stopped the nonsense of discrimination, judgement and agenda. One world. One soul. One planet’.” Since moving from the Atlantis Ballroom, The Journey of Humanity has been broken down into numbered, signed, catalogued, and framed canvases. Seventy individually framed pieces will be sold across four auctions in 2021 with the funds being raised for charitable initiatives in the sectors of education, digital connectivity, healthcare, and sanitation. 01 WIN, VICTORY, LOVE Artist: Tim Bravington Where to find it: Downtown Dubai near Dubai Opera This hand sign was coined by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE

and Ruler of Dubai way back in 2013. The hand sign shows the W for Win, the V for Victory and the L for Love, and is commonly referred to as Sheikh Mohammed’s three-finger salute. The sign has become a trademark gesture for many UAE citizens and

resident and symbolises work ethic, success and love of the nation. The sculpture here at Downtown Dubai has been around for a while now and it has also been spotted covered (not so discretely) in front of the Museum of the Future on Sheikh Zayed Road. What’s On_55

Artist: eL Seed Located next to the stunning Dubai Opera, this sculptural work by eL Seed, a renowned calligrapher and street artist, took two years to create. The spiralling electric pink text is a line from a poem by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, which says: ‘Art in all its colours and types reflects the culture of the nations, their history and civilization.’ eL Seed describes the work as ‘a declaration of love to the city that I call home,’ and to Arab calligraphy.

Artist: Richard Hudson Where to find it: The Dubai Mall, outside the Waterfall Entrance This sculpture has earned its spot on Instagram for many locals, residents and travellers. It was unveiled aptly on Valentine’s Day in 2018 and has become a part of the breathtaking landscape of Downtown Dubai. The sculpture was later replaced by a larger version, which had to be transported in pieces and then assembled onsite. It stands at five metres tall and weighs over 7,000kg (roughly the weight of an adult elephant). The heart-shaped polished steel installation by Richard Hudson playfully reflects the city’s most beloved landmarks, Burj Khalifa and The Dubai Mall. The artist stated that the sculpture is a symbol of love and peace.

Artist: Mirek Struzik Where to find it: Dubai Fountain Promenade, Downtown Dubai These beautiful larger-than-life dandelion installations by Mirek Struzik is one of the largest versions the artist has ever created. And, of course, it’s located next to one of the tallest buildings in the world – Burj Khalifa. The 14 dandelions add a touch of subtle beauty to the already fantastic space, and as the day turns to night, mesmerising lighting effects turn the work iridescent and you can’t help but snap a photo for the ‘Gram.

05 MOJO Artist: Idriss B Where to find it: Dubai Design District Idriss B was the talk of the town in September 2020 when his sculptures – a huge gold tiger and a gorilla statue – were helicoptered through Dubai. The giant animals had tickets to Wane by SoMiya where they justifiably grabbed the attention of patrons. However, there are several of these sculptures all over Dubai and the latest spot is at Dubai Design District. Idriss B took to his own Instagram and posted a photo of him with his new creation – a gorilla called Mojo who stands at a whopping 3.5-metres high. The artist stated that a special holographic paint was used that changes colour based on the light.

Artist: Joseph Klibansky Where to find it: In front of The Galliard in Downtown Dubai Created by contemporary sculptor, Joseph Klibansky, the 3.2-metre tall bronze monkey dons a party hat, a flute and beautiful roses. It symbolises the celebration of life and love in its purest form and stands as an icon of optimism towards the future. The bronze monkey appeared overnight on the last day of 2020 and took a crew of 30 men eight hours to assemble. We only wish we could have been there to see the looks on people’s faces when they first came across this fella. What’s On_57

ur guide zooms ahead on his blimp-like bike, making easy work of the rolling dunes inside the beautiful RitzCarlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert compound. We’re a bit shaky at the start, chasing him up near-vertical sand mounds on a Saluki Liwa 2.0 electric fat bike with tyres more than twice as wide as those on our regular two-wheeler. That excess rubber helps us to fly downhill and float across the lengthy sand plains, but these beasts are in their element going uphill, too. Just one generous twist of the throttle, or a few hardy pedals, and we’re propelled forward as if we’re riding motocross. While the fat bike craze is in full swing around the world – especially in the US, where they were designed to be an easier means of cycling through snow – the Saluki Liwa 3.0 electric fat bikes were built especially to make mincemeat of the UAE sands, with the ability to travel at up to 40 kmph. 62_What’s On

Despite the wacky proportions of the fat bike, it takes only one ride to understand its appeal: it’s a thrilling experience. Make no mistake, this is more action bike than a lazy cycle and you’ll work up a proper sweat bashing the dunes. The huge 4.8in

tyres create a wide contact patch with the ground, grabbing up traction on loose sand and riding proudly like an FJ Cruiser, ploughing over anything in its path. Across the harder plains, you can cycle less, throttle more, and simply enjoy the wildlife around without disturbing them. For the most part these burly bikes are pretty stable, provided you’re going in a straight line. The sheer size of the wheels can make it harder to steer and it’s easy to fall sideways up a dune if you’ve not got the stamina – or enough throttle – to keep riding. But it’s hard to deny the fun factor. Located in an old quarry in Mleiha, Sharjah, XQuarry Adventure Park is a giant excavation that specialises in offroading, mountain-biking, and good, old fashioned rip-roaring outdoor fun. The nearly one-million square metre quarry is loaded with multiple custombuilt and fully-prepped tracks to tackle. Since there’s plenty of desert off-roading to be had elsewhere, XQuarry’s tracks are mostly gravel and rocks, and there’s even a sneaky mud pit to drive through. In addition to the tracks, you’ll find 18 custom-built obstacles simulating different driving situations. These obstacles will challenge your technical skills as well as the capabilities of your vehicle. Right now, the off-road routes are only open to those with their own 4x4s or ATVs, but there will be driving experiences in the future where enthusiasts can rent a 4x4 on site.

Wait, there’s more… OBSTACLE RUNNING For those who prefer human-powered adventure, crawl, climb and get dirty at XQuarry’s permanent obstacle course. HIKING From the park you can go on several hiking routes totaling in distance of more than 12km. Short loops of 3km are also available for beginners and families. The hiking trails are maintained by XQuarry and are only accessible from the park, which means there is a Dhs50 fee. MOUNTAIN BIKING There are approximately 3km of track inside the park that are filled with different obstacles, but if you’re keen to lengthen the trail, cycle on outside of the park for a 10km

loop. Be sure to bring your own bikes as they are not available for hire. REMOTE CONTROL CAR RACING There’s also 500 metres of custom-built remote-control car tracks for those who prefer their vehicles really, really compact. Operators stand in shaded stations and elevated viewing platforms, but again, visitors must bring their own remotecontrol vehicles to play.

NEED TO KNOW XQuarry is currently open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 6pm. Off-road admission is Dhs150 and permits one car and two people full access to the park, including mountain biking, remote control car racing, hiking and obstacle running. Breathwork and ice baths In recent years, cold body therapy has gained serious popularity, because it is linked to numerous health benefits. For example, scientists have found evidence that exposure to cold speeds up metabolism. Another benefit of exposing your body to cold is that it reduces inflammation, swelling and sore muscles. Keen to learn more, we went along to meet Benoit who runs guided breathing and ice baths sessions in Dubai following the method created by Dutch ‘iceman’ Wim Hof. During the session you’ll undergo several rounds of deep breathwork, that aims to help you withstand the cold that you’re about to endure by going into a forced state of hyperventilation. The breathwork alone can be a euphoric experience. After a few rounds it’s time to hit the ice bath. We prepare with one more round of breathwork before taking the plunge into a big blue bucket. Florence, Italy It’s a little known fact that the huge, fabulous building of the Uffizi was not created as a museum but as a rather boring council office. It was ordered in 1560 by Cosimo I de’ Medici, first Grand Duke Of Tuscany, to house the administrative and judiciary offices of Florence – yes uffizi means offices in Italian. Now the place is over-run by lasagna-laden tourists rather than stern secretaries, but it’s still a place of great seriousness: you can’t take art this good lightly. CENTRE POMPIDOU Paris, France

In 1943, Frank Lloyd Wright received a letter from the art advisor to Solomon R Guggenheim, entreating the talented designer to build somewhere unique to house the family’s art collection in New York. The architect was not a fan of the Big Apple but couldn’t get his employer to change his mind about the location, which led to fraught times. “I can think of several more desirable places in the world to build his great museum,” Wright wrote in 1949 to his friend Arthur Holden, “but we will have to try New York.” To Wright, the city was overbuilt, overpopulated, and lacked architectural merit. But Guggenheim had the money so Guggenheim got his way. All the fighting was for nothing – as both Wright and Guggenheim were dead before the white whirlwind of a gallery was completed in 1959. Controversially, this great landmark of France was designed by two Italian and a British architect who won a competition to design a new museum in 1971. It was the first time in France that international architects were allowed to participate – a decision that some proud French regretted when the foreign winners were announced. It wasn’t a popular building at first, the magazine Le Figaro declaring: “Paris has its own monster, just like the one in Loch Ness.” But time has moved on and now this industrial, modern block of tubes, pipes and escalators is a Paris darling, not only offering the coolest art in the city, but offering incredible views – from the Eiffel Tower to Sacre Couer – up on the sixth floor. London, England Officially the most-visited gallery in the world, the Tate Modern not only holds treasures inside, but is a jewel of the London skyline. Standing proudly – and imposingly – on the south bank of the River Thames, this massive former power station has become a powerhouse of the world’s modern art scene. The museum holds the nation’s collection of British art from 1900 to the present day. Opened in 2000, the museum’s many galleries are located off the building’s cavernous turbine hall. THE GETTY VILLA Los Angeles, USA

This mountaintop Roman Villa houses J Paul Getty’s collection of approximately 44,000 Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. The one time richest man in America (and yet, infamous miser) was passionate about these periods and travelled the globe securing the finest pieces for his home and country. His passion for statues lasted longer than his passion for women (he was married and divorced five times), thankfully, and today more than 1,200 works, dating from 6,500BC to AD400, sit in a stunning house and garden overlooking the blue coastline of Malibu. MUSEO DEL PRADO Madrid, Spain

Spain’s impressive national art museum in the bustling capital of Madrid houses one of the world’s finest collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 19th century. Based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and unquestionably the best single collection of Spanish art in the world, it became a museum of paintings and sculpture in 1819. The numerous works by Francisco de Goya, arguably the king of Spanish art, is given special prominence in the Prado with an extensive collection.
