OK, SO LET’S NOT BEAT AROUND THE BUSH…

… We all know why you’re here. The festive season was perhaps just that little bit too ‘festive’; you’ve gained pounds, and lost dirhams. We won’t judge – you’re among friends here – but let’s just cut to the chase. It’s time to sort your life out… and that begins with ‘Dry January’. I know, I know, 31 days off the giggle juice is daunting but hear us out. Just because you’re taking a break from the grape, doesn’t mean you’ll be miserable all month. Page 27 is the start of six pages on Dubai’s best activities, from outdoor adventures to big kid experiences – we’ve a whole host of teetotal fun. And if you do need to trick your mind on a night out or at home, we’ve found some exciting zero hero drink alternatives to satisfy your grown-up cravings. Come on, Dubai, now’s the time kick-start the new you. Or at least try and find the old you, anyway – the one that wasn’t full of mince pies or mulled wine. Of course, this is What’s On, so while we focus on being really good for just one month, we’re also keen to look ahead at the rest of the year with our preview of exciting things to look forward to (p14). And while it’s probably fair to say that no one is really sure what 2022 has in store for us, there’s something we can always depend on: our city continuing to be great, challenging and unexpected. Sunrise paddle boarding My mind always works overtime and it’s hard to find a moment of calm. Until I discovered paddle boarding at sunrise. I rent my board from Ignite (Dhs75 for one hour), located just by Riva Beach Club, and with its frond, Burj Al Arab and (sometimes if we’re lucky) Burj Khalifa views, it has to be one of the best spots in the city. A Karama food tour In my opinion, Karama is the best neighbourhood for foodies. Hidden gems serve up a plethora of cuisines, all at pocket-friendly prices. question as it depends what you’re going to Expo for. People tend to overlook the thematic pavilions; Alif, Mission Possible and Terra. For that wow factor, I love the mirror room at the Mexico Pavilion and the gorge in Finland. For learning about the country, go check out Syria and Comoros. And for the whole experience, Germany and Japan top my lists. If we had to push you for your favourite Pavilion which would it be? Honestly, I can’t. They are all so different and you simply can’t compare a pavilion like The Netherlands against Eswatini pavilion for example. Yet I love them both from what I’ve learnt and experienced. Outside of Expo, you have become one of the city’s leading presenters. How has that journey been for you? Absolutely incredible... and tiring. To make the transition

I’m a ‘roving reporter’ for Studio Expo, the only daily live TV show broadcasting from Expo 2020 Dubai. This means I’m out and about nearly everyday reporting on what is happening, showcasing pavilions and meeting visitors. I love my job. You’ve been on site more than most. What are some of your hidden gems? This is always such a tough

There’s no safer place to live, and the weather is just the best. What annoys you about the UAE? I would have to say the driving here. People not signalling, people pushing in and honking at a green light. Honestly, make it stop! Do you reckon Dubai is your forever home? Yes, for sure. I’m very lucky that a lot of my family live here, so I don’t see myself going anywhere. And, since it’s January, any new year’s resolutions? 7 IS IT TAKE TWO FOR ULTRA MUSIC FESTIVAL? We heard it through the grapevine that Ultra Music Festival will finally make its UAE debut in the coming months. Ultra’s first attempt at expanding into the Middle East hit the skids in March 2020. The build for the two-day event in Abu Dhabi was almost complete when Covid-19 forced the festival’s cancellation. Our spies tell us the festival is back on the agenda for 2022 although we don’t know whether it will take place in Abu Dhabi or Dubai. One thing is for sure though, it will boast a line-up of fist-pumping, pyroloving EDM headliners. We’ll bring you more info as soon as we have it…

8 AUSSIE SPOT BIDI BONDI IS BEING REPLACED… BY AN AUSSIE SPOT When Bidi’s closed last year, it left a hole both in our hearts, and along the Palm’s prime real estate. Thankfully, restaurateur and all-round bonzer bloke Tom Arnel (of Tom & Serg fame) has taken over the space to open a brand new multi-concept called The Byron Bathers Club. hey say comedians can be some of the world’s most miserable people. Well, nobody proves that old adage more than Jack Dee. For someone who specialises in making people smile until their cheeks hurt, it is ironic that the only facial discomfort Dee feels is the wrinkling of his nose as he describes yet another thing that annoys him.

A stand-up comedian for almost 30 years and a regular fixture on TV panel shows in Britain, Dee brings his grumpy act to Dubai this month. Before a career in comedy, Dee was a waiter in London (we’re guessing he didn’t get many tips). One night he went to an open mic event at the famous Comedy Store and told

some gags on stage. He quickly rose through the ranks and gave up the waiter job to go full time – much to the delight of the restaurant’s manager we imagine. What followed was critical acclaim, awards, sold out gigs, his Thanks For Nothing autobiography and, most recently, his very own self-help book with a typically snarky title, What is Your Problem? SUSHISAMBA DUBAI

Famous restaurant brand finds a happy home on Palm Jumeirah t seems that no two words have been uttered more often in the Dubai restaurant scene than Sushi and Samba. The world-famous brand has teased a Palm Jumeirah arrival since 2019, so it’s with great anticipation that we head inside. The sky-high spot sits pretty on the 51st floor of Palm Tower, on the trunk of Palm Jumeirah. Wraparound views of the Palm below, as well as the surrounding ocean and skyscrapers, can be seen from every table, but the seats by the window are next-level. Unsurprisingly, the restaurant is packed when we arrive, and we’re told that the reservations are full for the rest of the month. The hype around this opening has been astounding, but with good reason. The other SushiSamba outposts (located in New York and London to name a couple) have garnered international praise. In Dubai, the three-page menu is inspired by Japanese and Peruvian cuisine with Brazilian influence, featuring cold plates and raw dishes, robata grilled meats and fish, and sushi. We kick off with two varieties of gyoza, one with prawn (Dhs68) and the other with Japanese A5 Wagyu beef (Dhs92). The beef is a clear winner, with juicy meat, melting in the mouth from within soft yet crispy wrappers.

The best way to sample SushiSamba’s selection of raw ‘seviches’ is via the Samba Seviche platter (Dhs299). A large plate features a Palm Tower-shaped frozen block with the restaurant’s name carved onto the ice, while five different ceviche dishes chill around the edge. The tuna was a particular highlight, with a tangy garlic and sesame dressing and delicate tuna chunks. Raw fans will also love the salmon tartare (Dhs85), which is served on a bed of black crispy nori. The flavours used in the salmon are an invigorating hit of citrus and creaminess from the dots of avocado puree. Famed for its Samba Rolls, SushiSamba Dubai offers six varieties of maki, our favourite being the bahia (Dhs95), which includes shrimp tempura and avocado rolled in rice and topped with slivers of tuna and king crab. The combination of soft and crunchy, sweet and creamy gives the perfect balance. The venue is dark but buzzing with large, tilted windows providing the spectacular sparkling background. A bongos player drums along to the DJ who plays uptempo tracks that can just be heard over the hum of excited chatter. Forgoing traditional mains, the menu offers simple robata dishes from

the traditional Japanese charcoal grill. The 200g Australian Angus tenderloin (Dhs250) practically falls apart on the fork. Tender and juicy, the meat is topped with melted foie gras and chives for an unusual cross-cuisine flavour. The black cod (Dhs180) is a safe but undeniably enjoyable choice, lathered in sticky sweet white miso and shichimi for a light kick. The spatchcock baby chicken (Dhs138) has even more of a kick, coated in a punchy rocoto taramind miso and grilled until perfectly charred. We stretch to a dessert, albeit a light and carb-free option. A hollowed out pineapple (Dhs59) arrives packed with a caramelised compote and topped with a coconut sorbet that helps mellow the sour citrus taste. Should you believe the SushiSamba Dubai hype? Authentic Korean dining at Expo 2020 Dubai It can be difficult to navigate through the maze of restaurants at Expo 2020 Dubai, with so many cuisines to choose from. When we heard D-ream, the group behind concepts such as Coya, Amazonico and Zuma, had opened a restaurant at Expo, Kojaki jumped to the top of our list. The restaurant describes itself as Korean with Japanese essence, as the head chef is a native Korean who has spent decades cooking Japanese cuisine. You might expect to find the venue near the Korean pavilion, but it’s actually further into the Opportunity district. A standalone structure, Kojaki is on the ground floor, and features an open kitchen, facing a central bench seating area, and several singular tables. The wall décor celebrates Korean culture through painted fabrics hung in synchrony, and large overhanging lamps to give an authentic street-feel.

The one-page menu features a number of hot and cold starters, plus grilled mains and street food snacks. We start off with yukhoe (Dhs70), finely chopped marinated beef tartare with Korean pear and slow cooked egg yolk. We break up the egg and mix the beef to incorporate all the delicious flavours. Flavour clearly plays an important role in this kitchen, as the next dish packs plenty of it. Chamchi hye muchim (Dhs80) features small chunks of tuna sashimi with a texture reminiscent of watermelon and bursting with cho-jang chilli sauce. When it comes to sides, the lobster mac and cheese (Dhs190) is a must. Served

in a pot, the bubbling pasta is topped with a crispy coating and chives. Under the exterior layer are perfectly cooked pasta shells in a rich cheesy sauce. Service is swift and friendly, and our server is quick to recommend his personal favourites when prompted. THE JUMEIRAH STEAKHOUSE GOES BACK TO BASICS After a long hiatus, The Hide at Jumeirah Al Qasr has finally reopened. What always set the steakhouse apart for us was the creativity of its menu – from the ‘forgotten cuts’ and the freshly baked bagels, to the campfire smores, it had lots of charm. It’s a shame then that as we return for the first time after a few years, the restaurant, and the menu, has taken on a much more classic feel. Gone are the thick wooden tables, covered instead with white tablecloths, and low lighting – it’s more understated now. On the upside, while The Hide is still very much ‘meatcentric’, it’s great to see that it’s expanded the seafood section and added some plant-based alternatives. Service is faultless, with staff who know their stuff and politely make conversation between courses. We kick things off with warm bread (*sob* the bagels have gone)

and some very enjoyable appetisers of juicy grilled prawns (Dhs85) accompanied by a delicious sauce vierge, and soft tacos three ways (Dhs65). We choose two meaty options, the 220g Prime USDA beef tenderloin (Dhs260) and the 350g ribeye (Dhs275) plus a selection of sides. The side dishes are all sound – skin-on fries, sauteed spinach and onion rings. For dessert we loved the chocolate rocher (Dhs55) with salted caramel and macadamia nuts, but we’ve had better apple crumble (Dhs55). So here it is, the new Hide. CHEF MAURO COLAGRECO GIVES AN OLD STALWART A NEW LEASE OF LIFE For most, a night out to the One&Only Royal Mirage usually means you’re off to Jetty Lounge. And a good option that is, too. But long-time residents will have probably visited – and enjoyed – its shoreline neighbour, The Beach Bar & Grill. Now there are new reasons to revisit as the old stalwart has had a full uplift to help give it a more contemporary feel. Outside, there’s a beautiful two-level terrace that looks out over the ocean. All very romantic. The open kitchen’s centrepiece is a shiny Argentine wood-fired parilla (meaning grill). Chef Mauro Colagreco runs the show and the menu reflects his roots; traditional South American flavours with seafood and prime meats. We start with tender chargrilled octopus (Dhs100) and a portion of the golden empanadas (Dhs75). The octopus is soft with a light char on the sides, while the

empanadas are tasty, doughwrapped meat pockets stuffed with beef confit. Enamoured by the parilla, we order the bife de Chorizo, a 300g Australian wagyu striploin (Dhs260) with a side of fries (Dhs40). The kitchen crew does a pretty good job cooking the meat to our requested temperature, though the outer edges of our medium-rare steak veered a bit too well done. The extra chimichurri is a flavourful mix of garlic, oregano, oil and white vinegar, and helped enhanced the meat flavour. Overall, it’s a pleasing dinner out. The food here feels easy-going, and the ambiance is a delight. Argentinian quality and quantity at new La Peñia Saturday brunch The new La Peñia brunch at Asado, Palace Downtown, has all the makings of a wonderful afternoon. First, the setting is a win. Burj Khalifa stands magnificently in front of the outdoor terrace, which itself juts out onto the beautiful blue waterway. Throw into the mix a live singer who sets the scene for an Argentinian fiesta but doesn’t drown out table chatter. Then there’s a live grill outside where you can see all the various meats being cooked, while picking up the delicious smells wafting through the air. On to the food and after enjoying a welcome drink, a selection of starters arrives at our table. The highlights for us are the zingy and refreshing ceviche mixto, the freshly baked beef empanadas and the house speciality, cabrito a la estaca (or slow grilled baby goat). Diners also receive beef carpaccio, burrata, bread with grilled Provolone cheese, potato croquettes, calamari and quinoa salad. Everything is well-presented and inviting. For mains, a sizzling platter of meat is brought to the table with a selection of

different cuts, plus a few side dishes. The meat has been marinated in the special Asado chimichuri and for us it’s the beef tenderloin and the chicken that really pick up that marinade and melt in the mouth. Dessert comes with six different options but, be warned, it’s another huge plate of food. The churros are incredible, as are the alfajores and it’s great to try something new in the gloriously light ‘Chaja’– layers of sponge cake, whipped cream, and fresh fruit. The first dish I ever made from scratch was mashed potatoes. It was chunky, a bit undercooked in some areas, but edible. When I moved to Canada at the age of 15, my brother was the only one cooking, and he wasn’t very good. Our options were to eat whatever he made, or order out. Being students, we usually opted for whatever he made. When I was finally fed up with his food, I decided to give it a go. So I grabbed some potatoes, butter, some seasonings and went for it. Canada has had the biggest impact on my culinary skills. I got a job in a kitchen while I was at university. From my first job at Marche’ in Toronto, I went on to work my way up through many restaurants in the city. I’m so pleased to see so many more creative home-grown brands here now. More of those are focusing on unique offerings instead of following fads. I like simple food. It doesn’t have to be fancy to be impressive. A well made roast chicken can make my day. I also love complex soups. A good pho or ramen is a real treat. When I’m not cooking I love to cycle. This industry can have a toll on your sanity sometimes. Cycling is a mentally liberating sport. Plus, I can do it very early in the day before my hectic schedule starts. q @burroblancouae

A party never goes wrong with Pete Tong B ritish DJ Pete Tong is heading back to Dubai later this month with his latest essential selection of dancefloor-destroying tracks. Pete returns to intimate club environs after spending the tail end of last year touring his Ibiza Classics show with the Heritage Orchestra across UK arenas. Flying solo in Dubai, the living legend will headline Skyline Thursday, at The Penthouse, on January 27. Pete Tong’s influence on dance music culture is immeasurable. For more than a decade, millions tuned into his BBC Radio 1 Essential Selection show on a Friday night, which kicked off the weekend for clubbers across the UK. The trusted voice for a generation, Tong helped many electronic artists break through to a wider audience. A regular in Ibiza from the start of the ’90s, he held residencies at Pacha, then later at Eden and Blue Marlin. Today, Tong is considered a global ambassador for dance music. Here are eight key moments from his standout career.

1. Pete’s skill for spotting talent became evident way back in 1983 when he signed Run DMC to London Records. Through London Records’ subsidiary FFRR, he championed seminal artists like Orbital, Goldie, Frankie Knuckles and Armin van Helden. ★ 2. Moving from Capital Radio to BBC Radio 1 in 1991, Tong helped steer the station into the realms of house, techno and jungle.

His Essential Selection show ran for 15 years. ★ 3. His connection with the BBC holds fast. With his shows now broadcast on digital network Radio 1 Dance, Pete is the secondlongest serving living DJ at the beeb. ★ 4. Tong co-founded the International Music Summit in 2008. The event takes place in Ibiza and attracts industry professionals from around the world. ★ 5. Pete has acted as music supervisor on a number of films including The Beach, Human Traffic, 24 Hour Party People and, of course, It’s All Gone Pete Tong. ★

6. In 2014 Pete rubbed shoulders with royalty when he received an MBE from HRH Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, at Buckingham Palace. ★ 7. A year later, he took house music to the BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The show featured classic dance tunes reverse engineered by Jules Buckley’s Heritage Orchestra. The show has spawned a number of tours and albums since. ★ 8. In November 2021 Pete received a well-earned and thoroughly deserved Lifetime Achievement Award from the Music Industry Trusts at a swanky ceremony in London.

A-based UK DJ and producer Lee Burridge will become a familiar face around these parts after signing up his All Day I Dream club brand to a year-long monthly residency at Soho Garden DXB. Armed with melodic house tunes engineered to float on the breeze, Lee leads the charge at All Day I Dream of Dubai, on Friday, January 28. First conceived in 2011 as a New York rooftop party, All Day I Dream is now a globally respected club brand, throwing parties all over the world, and a prolific record label. This year Burridge will realise another dream when the first All Day I Dream Festival takes place in California in May. But Dubai clubbers can enjoy the party’s infamous feelgood vibes right on their doorstep when Burridge and his label mates Double

Fancy an out-of-town adventure that involves dancing in the desert? Then head to Ras Al Khaimah later this month for Oblivion – the party that marries great electronic music with desert glamping. After a hugely successful launch event in October, headlined by Miami-based DJ Stan Kolev, Oblivion returns to The Dunes campsite for a weekend of party antics from Friday January 28 to Sunday January 30. The decision was made in recognition of the UAE’s recent Golden Jubilee. Two new boxing gyms open in Dubai

01 SPARTAN BOXING CLUB Location: Arjan A new boxing gym trading under the tagline Boxing Without Bruises has opened in Arjan, promising to deliver a full gamut of classes for enthusiasts and first timers, fighters and those on a fitness journey. The cultural heart of the Arab world, Cairo is not for the fainthearted. Loud, congested, polluted and frustrating, it nevertheless offers a wealth of beauty for those who are willing to delve into its ancient streets and alleyways

Abou El Sid

Located on a nondescript side-street in the trendy district of Zamalek, at first glance Abou El Sid seems a little too underwhelming to even bother stepping inside. But the moment you push through its giant wooden doors, you are immediately transported to another world. Kitschy and dimly-lit, it’s one of those places where the dining experience is made all the better by the venue itself. There are ornate chandeliers, lanterns, shutters, and images of the icons of Egypt’s golden age of music and cinema. There are old culinary favourites, such as foul with tahini, kofta, koshari, and baba ghanoush, but push the boat out and try some of the specialities. These include mulukhiyah with rabbit and white rice, Circassian chicken in walnut sauce, and stuffed pigeon with freekeh. You won’t be disappointed.

Muizz Street

A stone’s throw from the craziness that is Khan el-Khalili, Muizz Street runs north-to-south within the walled city of historic Cairo. It’s a double winner for any visitor. On the one hand it enables you to enjoy the hustle and bustle of one of the oldest streets in Cairo. On the other, it allows you to experience Islamic Cairo in all its glory. Approximately a kilometre in length, Al-Mu’izz li-Din Allah Al-Fatimi Street (that’s its full name) is lined with an embarrassment of architectural riches, including the Madrasa and Mausoleum of al-Salih Najm al-Din Ayyub, the Qalawun Complex, and the Beshtak Palace. If that’s not enough, it’s also within easy walking distance of both the Al-Azhar Mosque and the Al-Hussein Mosque.

Pyramids of Giza

No trip to Cairo would be complete without a visit to the Pyramids of Giza. To not walk up to the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, or the Great Sphinx of Giza would be like travelling to Athens and not visiting the Acropolis or the Parthenon. It’s just not the done thing. Perched perilously close to the edge of the modern city of Giza, the entire complex has been delighting travellers for centuries and still holds sway over millions of visitors every year. Viewing one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World in person can be a surreal experience and for an additional fee you can even enter the Great Pyramid of Giza. Doing so gives you access to the King’s Chamber, but be warned: the tiny passageways leading to the chamber can be cramped and claustrophobic.

Another culinary treat, Sobhy Kaber is the absolute bomb when it comes to dining out in Cairo. It’s not much to look at, just a large, garishly lit room in a modern glass-fronted building, but man does it do good food. Located in Rod El Farag and within easy walking distance of the Nile, to be honest it’s more theatre than restaurant. From the ridiculously long queues and the cavernous interior, to the grilled meats and kofta, be sure to come prepared for a performance. Make sure you try the mulukhiyah, which is served at your table with such a flourish that it’s worth all the queues and the wait in the world.

A sprawling warren of alleyways and traders that can bamboozle the uninitiated, Khan el-Khalili is Egypt’s most famous souq. It’s been around since the 14th century and is as crazy as you’d imagine a medieval Cairene bazaar to be. A hive of narrow lanes and small courtyards, the easiest thing to do is get lost. Everything from silverware and soap to antiques and alabaster pyramids are on sale, but if you’re looking for something in particular, do some research in advance. If not, just embrace the madness and haggle. Don’t even attempt to visit if you suffer from claustrophobia. Oh, and if fancy a coffee or a short respite, pop into El Fishawi, one of the oldest (it was first opened in 1797) cafes in Cairo.

WHERE T O S TAY Four Seasons Cairo at The First Residence Perched on the western bank of the Nile, the Four Seasons Cairo at The First Residence is the perfect location from which to explore the city. Surrounded by lush botanical gardens and offering everything from a fourth-floor outdoor pool to nine restaurants and bars and a Turkish hammam, there’s really nothing more you could ask for. There’s a luxury mall connected to the hotel, too, which provides three floors of high-end boutique shopping, and a casino. For food lovers, however, the cherry on the cake is the First Nile Boat, which features a number of venues, including the pan-Asian restaurant Nairu and Xodó, a Brazilian churrascaria. We opted for the latter. If you’re going to do the same, make sure you’re hungry. The dishes come thick and fast at Xodó and it’s easy to overindulge in the first few rounds, such is the quality of the food. And that’s before you’ve even begun on the meat. Once the Angus beef strip loin churrasco, the marinated Australian lamb chops, the veal

and chicken sausage spirals with cuiabana cheese, and the beef bacon-wrapped turkey breasts are rolled out, well… it’s a meat lover’s heaven, isn’t it.
