EDITOR’S LETTER

ONE THING THE PANDEMIC HAS TAUGHT US…

… beyond how to create the perfect sourdough, is that nature is not a luxury. It is essential for human survival. And while many of us city folk have gained a new appreciation for the outdoors, you don’t have to commit to some epic cross-country camping trip just to get some fresh air. With that in mind, we scoured the country for the best outdoor hikes — past secluded beaches, through water-filled wadi’s, up the UAE’s highest peak, and the like – to find some really wonderful trails within easy driving distance of Abu Dhabi. Whether you’re a hardcore hiker or an amateur 2,000 steps max a day type, these spots offer natural beauty and invigorating adventure in spades. Enjoy the issue.

CHRIS WRIGHT – THE PARTY KING

Do you have a favourite brunch? My favourite is probably our brunch at Versace Hotel. It took me two years to lock that in, but I’m so proud of how it’s turned out. Nothing compares to it. We make guests feel like royalty from the second they arrive. You’ve just opened a bar inside Bla Bla. Tell us about it? I’ve always wanted to launch my own bar with a New York vibe. Due to the current restrictions, you won’t experience the full concept of The Bronx yet, but when things change, it’ll be crazy. Think Coyote Ugly meets Dubai. I also love The Bronx’s location in one of the most insane venues in Dubai. Bla Bla has something for everyone with over 20 venues to bar crawl around so you know the vibe will be good.

U

AE Famous is a What’s On page focusing on people out there making the scene. They’re out there around town, shaping the UAE into what it is, creating the culture, food and life around us. We asked them what’s good in the UAE. We asked them what’s bad in the UAE. We asked them to tell us more, more, more about their wonderful selves…

Who are you, and what’s made you UAE famous? I’m from Liverpool and I’ve lived here for seven years. I own several companies covering events management, marketing, hospitality and travel. I’m probably most

“WE MAKE GUESTS FEEL LIKE ROYALTY FROM THE SECOND THEY ARRIVE” famous for hosting a lot of parties here, from ladies days to club nights and brunches. Secret Parties is one of the most talked about events companies and I created and built it from scratch. Yes, the beloved Secret Parties. How did all this happen? I’ve been organising events since I was 18 years old, so it’s always been something I’ve been involved in. When I first moved here I started off small and built my network up. I launched my first brunch at Pacha, and it started as a once-a-month thing. Now we do over 45 brunches a month across town.

We often see you with UK reality stars. What are they really like? Everyone is genuinely down to earth, and it’s great to have their support for my businesses. My job is to make sure they have the best holiday, so their followers

Chris Wright

want to come to Dubai and do what they do. It’s why I created Inside Lifestyle, a one-stop-shop to book all your Dubai activities once you’re here. What do you love about the UAE? I love the people. I’ve made so many amazing friends. I love meeting people at my events and seeing them enjoy a concept I’ve put together. Nightlife is a universal language. No matter where you’re from it brings people together. What stresses you out about the UAE? I have over 5,000 people a week that attend my events, so sometimes it gets stressful managing guests. A lot of people don’t book in advance, so on a weekend it can get stressful trying to make sure everyone is looked after. What are your favourite bars and restaurants? I’ll be completely honest, I love the venues I work with – that’s why I work with them. Some of my favourites places are Flair 5 and Cafe Belge in the Ritz Carlton DIFC – they have such a vibe. I love The Penthouse at Five The Palm for a good party, and for a pool day Cove Beach is just stunning – I am obsessed with the sushi. Do you think Dubai is your forever home? I don’t think I could move. I know my business is always going to be here. My brands and concepts will keep growing and I will never give up on expanding my business. This is home for me. q secret-parties.com

here’s little question that, since its launch 21 years ago, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship has become a calendar highlight for the UAE’s tennis fans. The two-week festival of tennis begins with the WTA 1000 competition, which will take place from March 7 to 13. Following what is sure to be a thrilling week, tennis fans can also look forward to seeing many of the world’s best ATP players when the men’s week follows from March 14 to 20. Those battling for the WTA title this year have won a remarkable 18 Grand Slam titles between them, with six players at one stage holding the world number one ranking. The star-studded field is headed by current women’s world number one Ashleigh Barty, who makes her Dubai debut.

Elina Svitolina The Ukrainian has a glorious record at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, winning the title in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 she was also a semi-finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open. In 2020, while playing a limited schedule, she won both Monterrey and Strasbourg.

The amiable Aussie not only won the 2019 French Open and reached the semi-finals last year in her home Grand Slam in Melbourne, but she is the recipient of Australia’s highest sporting honour, the Don Award.

UAE’S BEST HIKING TRAILS

S

pring is the season of adventure, and nothing has residents more pumped this year than the UAE wilderness and its amazing hiking trails. They’re beautiful, they’re all unique, and they get you outside. They are also free, which we can’t say was true for your Deliveroo order last night. Do yourself a favour: this month, go on an adventure and hit the trails. The Hajar mountains stretch for 700km through the eastern UAE to the north east of Oman and they run through six of the seven Emirates – phew, that’s a lot of exploring to do. Behold, some of our favourite places in the UAE to go hiking...

GREAT FOR: BEGINNERS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.103958, 56.039260 One of the closest hiking spots to Dubai, Wadi Shawka is just an hour away and it is a great beginner’s hike. Shawka has several varied routes. You can choose from a quick ramble or make a day of it and include the Shawka pools, too. Whichever you pick you’ll enjoy impressive, panoramic views. Head to the Shawka Dam and either take the stairs directly to the summit or choose one of the trails, easily visible from the small parking area. The trails are well marked out, making it difficult to get lost and safe for families with children. What’s On_19

UAE’S BEST HIKING TRAILS

Hatta Mountain Trails GREAT FOR: FAMILY-FUN HIKES DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 30 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 24.815061, 56.160270 Head to Hatta Wadi Hub to choose from five diverse routes spread over nearly 33km. Ranging from novice to arduous, there are trails for everyone. Hatta is Dubai’s largest national park, and with undulating rugged hills and wadis it is a photographer’s dream. The paths take you through farms, over dams, by the heritage village and up to the famous Hatta sign. This is one of the few hikes that have toilet facilities, so is perfect for families with young children.

Al Rabi Mountain Trail GREAT FOR: A DIP IN THE OCEAN POST HIKE DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 25 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.339488, 56.359157 Situated on the east coast, overlooking Khor Fakkan town and the Gulf of Oman, Al Rabi is known for its spectacular sunrise views. There are two summits along this path and between the two you will get a glimpse of the secret hidden beach. Though steep at 20_What’s On

times, the trail is suitable for most adventurers, including children and dogs. It takes about three hours to complete the 6km track. While there’s a small car park at Al Rabi Tower, it’s well advised to park down the hill in the long term parking.

Ain Al Sheria GREAT FOR: INTERMEDIATE HIKERS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 50 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.606302, 56.152161 One of the most colourful and historical hikes in the UAE is Ain Al Sheria in north-west Fujairah. Boasting stunning rock formations in vibrant russet tones and a vast boulder with ancient petroglyphs, it undoubtedly stands out as unique. The 8.8km trail is well marked, thanks to the recent efforts of Fujairah Adventures. However, this is a challenging hike and will require some prior experience. There are shelters for rest and shade, though most of the path is in the open sun, so don’t forget your sunscreen. The approaching road is in a rough condition and requires a 4x4.

WIN! The North Face kit

A HIKING STARTER PACK WORTH DHS2,656

There’s nothing like a new outfit to make you hike up those mountains quicker. As the most iconic adventurewear brand on the planet, this brilliant hiking kit from The North Face fits the bill. You could snag all these goodies below just by entering via whatson.ae/win.

HIKING ESSENTIALS CHECKLIST

Hiking is a great experience that allows you to connect with nature by immersing yourself within it. But anyone who’s ever gone on a hike underprepared usually has regrets. The wrong shoes, lack of water, missing maps etc. Here’s a good list of things you’ll need for a thoroughly enjoyable hike.

BOOTS AND SHOES Most people’s feet swell considerably while hiking, so you need a hiking boot that’s slightly wide on the toes, yet light and breathable. We’re fans of The North Face M Vectiv Exploris Mid Futurelight (Dhs729, The North Face store), designed with innovative solutions for maximising stability and minimising fatigue.

PACKS An ultralight, water-resistant and tear-resistant pack like the Lixada series (Dhs62, amazon.ae) is ideal to handle the terrain you’ll come across in the UAE. It also has special pouch to fit a water bladder.

HYDRATION

M REAXION EASY TEE Dhs149

M TENTE FUTURELIGHT JACKET Dhs1,399

It’s fine to bring bottles of water, but you’ll find the experience far more enjoyable with a CamelBak. Some models are absolutely perfect for day trips as the backpack will sufficiently hold your water reserve and have enough room for your other necessities (snacks, keys, phone, etc).

VERY USEFUL APPS

M VECTIV EXPLORIS MID FUTURELIGHT Dhs729 M EXPLORATION PANT Dhs379

Wikiloc and Alltrails are two of the best apps to find trails with outdoor navigation, offline maps and live tracking.

MOST EVERYTHING ELSE YOU’LL NEED All products pictured are also available at The North Face stores in The Dubai Mall, Dubai Marina Mall and Mirdiff City Centre Dubai

Other essentials worth having include a headlamp, a portable charger, a first aid kit, sunscreen, snacks, sunglasses, hat, and phone with offline maps.

UAE’S BEST HIKING TRAILS

Jebel Jais GREAT FOR: OUTSTANDING PANORAMAS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 50 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.903435, 56.140985 (LOWER TRAILS); 25.938134,56.131498 (UPPER TRAILS) The UAE’s tallest mountain, Jebel Jais is split into two hiking areas. The lower segment has five trails for varying abilities, starting from 0.8km up to 6km for the Samar trail. Hikes are well marked out but if you prefer to have some supervision, Beyond Action (beyondaction. ae), Challenging Adventure (challengingadventure.com) and Adventurati Outdoor (adventurati-outdoor.com) all offer guided tours. The upper trail is a bit more demanding with a steep start. However, the track is well defined making it difficult to lose your way. This path will lead you to the north and south summits, where you have outstanding vistas from the highest points in the UAE. Thanks to huge efforts from the Ras Al Khaimah government, Jebel Jais is a hub for thrill seekers. It also hosts the country’s highest restaurant, 1484 by Puro, named so after its height above sea level.

Jebel Jais

Mleiha GREAT FOR: PANORAMIC SAND DUNE VIEWS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 45 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.167183,55.841779 Stunning sand dunes meet the fascinating geological wonders of Fossil Rock at Jebel Mleiha. It starts with a mild hike and boulder clambering, before the real climb begins. There’s no set path so be sure to follow a Wikiloc App trail – you’ll find a number to choose from. Either head straight up and left, which will take you along the hair-raising ridge and down the far mountainside towards the desert, or up and right, which makes for panoramic views of Fossil Rock. Not recommended for children under 10 years. 22_What’s On

8 HIKING SAFETY TIPS 01 Always tell someone where you plan to hike and the time you expect to return.

Jebel Hafeet GREAT FOR: ADVANCED HIKERS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 50 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 24.098936, 55.748944 (GREEN MUBAZZARAH PARK); 24.055854, 55.798625 (JEBEL HAFEET DESERT PARK) Situated in Al Ain, Abu Dhabi’s only mountainous region, Jebel Hafeet offers a variety of rewarding hikes. The first begins at Green Mubazzarah Park, but due to covid restrictions, the park is currently only open from 5pm, so hikers are taking to reversing the hike and starting at the top. The alternative trek is the ‘smuggler’s route’ which commences from the Desert Park on the far side of the mountain. This path winds up through the rugged terrain offering fascinating views of the ancient burial tombs and the desert plains stretching out towards Oman. Both routes are considered intermediate with some loose rocks, therefore not advised for children or first timers.

Wadi Abadilah GREAT FOR: BOULDERING AND WADI DIPS DISTANCE FROM DXB: 1-HOUR 30 MINUTES’ DRIVE COORDINATES: 25.440816, 56.196784 Approximately 20km north of Masafi lies the picturesque Wadi Abadilah. This trail leads you through agricultural farmland where you will spot banana trees, mango trees, date palms and more. While most wadis are running dry this year, with little rain, Abadilah still has some flowing streams and pools. If you are a keen nature observer, look out for snakes and lizards in this area. This is a moderate hike, with some boulder climbing depending how deep into the wadi you venture. Weekends can get busy.

02 It is recommended not to hike alone. If you do, make sure you follow a busy route and do not go off course. 03 Always take more water than you think you need. If you get lost in the mountains, water will keep you going until help comes. 04 Download maps before setting off. The network coverage in the mountains can be patchy and some areas have no coverage at all. 05 Morning hikes are safer as you won’t run out of daylight hours. If you plan to hike at night, make sure you have enough torches and know your route well. 06 Check the weather before heading out. Rain can cause flash floods and have a perilous outcome. 07 Never attempt the more advanced hikes without a guide. Going under prepared can lead to serious consequences. 08 Remember to leave the mountains as you found them. Please do not litter.

01 Corniche Parks (Family Park, Lake Park, Urban Park, Formal Park, Heritage Park) There’s a verdant patchwork of award-winning free-to-enter parks along Abu Dhabi’s Corniche, each with a slightly different theme. The Family Parks (1 and 2) have a range of safe play areas (no men unaccompanied by ‘children or women’ permitted) with a fun mix of installations appropriate for a wide range of ages. You’ll also find a skate park and sports courts for active escapades, a splash pool and barbecue pits if you want to make a day of it. Lake Park unsurprisingly pairs its greenery with watery vistas. There’s a quaint park bridge that’s perfect for profile shots and romantic promenades. Formal Park has also got a lot going on, aside from the plethora of places to park-up and chill. At the far eastern end of the Corniche, head into Heritage Park for dhow harbour views, fountains, play areas, picnic spots and buildings inspired by the nation’s past.

hether you are a serious collector or simply an enthusiast, a visit to this year’s Art Dubai will introduce you to galleries from all around the world. Encounter striking installations to inspire your next #ArtSelfie, as well as some of the world’s most established galleries, which return year after year and reflect the truly global nature of Art Dubai. Of course, the arts sector has, like so many others, been heavily impacted by the events of the last 12 months,

and the last-minute location change is a reflection of that. Thankfully, the Art Dubai team is keen to do everything they possibly can to support the communities at this time and remain confident in producing a physical edition of this year’s fair. The new purpose-built structure beneath the Gate Building in DIFC will house

around 45 galleries – including San Gimignano’s GALLERIA CONTINUA and TEMPLON from Paris – and will run for six days. This means more flexibility to visitors, while enabling the organisers to regulate the number of people attending, in accordance with the safety and social distancing measures. What’s On_29

Q&A What are you proudest to reveal this year? I am thrilled that we will be showcasing the region’s artists with an important platform to display and promote their work. On a more personal note, I am proud of the wonderful Art Dubai team who have been working relentlessly with our partners to deliver this year’s edition in challenging circumstances. What’s in it for the casual visitor? Discovering wonderful artworks from all over the world, and through them learning about different ways to read and interpret our reality. Art is unquestionably influenced by the world we live in, so visitors will have the opportunity to see how artists’ creations capture our recent reality. Now more than ever we have come to understand what a privilege it is to experience artworks in person, so the ability to visit an exhibition is one that should be cherished and we hope our visitors will enjoy it.

MEET THE DIRECTOR Art Dubai’s regional director Hala Khayat reveals her hopes for this year’s fair

This is your first year with Art Dubai. What do you hope to achieve? Art Dubai has played a central role in developing Dubai’s vibrant art scene, making a significant contribution to the cultural ecology of the region. It’s always been a unique convergence point and I’m excited about enabling artists to meet collectors by helping put on a physical event in a safe environment and supporting a sector which, like many others, has been impacted greatly over the last year. That is our aim. What’s different about this year’s fair? A lot! Although our mission remains, we have had to adapt to the current circumstances and will be following the highest safety protocols. We have developed a new app to help manage access to the fair and have redesigned the layout to ensure increased social distancing. In addition, we will be supporting participating galleries that may be unable to attend in person through a remote participation programme. This allows them to send their artworks to Dubai and we’ll facilitate all logistics and connect them virtually with fair visitors. Sounds like it’ll have more reach that way… We like to think that this edition of the fair will allow us 30_What’s On

“NOW MORE THAN EVER WE’VE LEARNED WHAT A PRIVILEGE IT IS TO ENJOY ART IN PERSON” to innovate and keep pushing the definition of what an art fair can and should be. What part do local and regional artists play? They’re essential. They are the foundation blocks upon which a cultural ecosystem can thrive and stay relevant, and Dubai is home to an increasing number of great talents who add to the scene. Art enthusiasts, collectors and international stakeholders from the cultural scene are extremely keen to discover the nuances of local art practice.

CHAMAS

All you can eat meat? Challenge accepted… e’re at InterContinental Abu Dhabi’s award-winning Brazilian steakhouse Chamas, to try out its churrascaria night. It’s a thrice-weekly theatre for the carnivorous, a traditional South American all-you-can-eat conveyor belt of quality cuts. And we’ve come prepared, attired in stretchy waistbands, for this is a meaty Everest we were born to climb. Chamas has interior and terrace seating, both possessed of their own charms. Despite an inclination to sit amongst the flickering flame-pillar lamps and drink in the marina views, there’s still a lingering winter chill in the air, so we opt for the cosy low-lit interior. After being seated, we begin to notice a few departures from the standard restaurant experience. There’s a slim discshaped card placed on the table alongside our cutlery; it’s a traffic light indicator for our servers. The green on one side translates as ‘feed me’, a signal for the passing gauchos to carve you off a slice of their freshly grilled cargo. The red is of course for ‘stop please’,

W

temporary submission, a moment on the ropes before you’re ready to head into the ring for the next round. And it’s not solely a meat feast. There’s a whole elaborate buffet of sides, appetisers and dishes that would happily compose a meal in their own right. But we’ve already flipped the disc, and the first meat delivery arrives at our table. It’s garlic beef, cooked to a perfect medium and skillfully shaved off a swordmounted-joint by the attending gaucho in the house ‘espetocorrido‘ style. The rich flavour of the grill, and roundness of the marinade are an early reassurance that this will be an enjoyable ascent up the meat mountain. Our signal stays green and more cuts follow, with a variety of preparations and provenance. Wagyu, Black Angus, Hereford and other breeds are given

signature Latin rubs before being cooked over flame. There are veal and juicy salt marsh lamb cuts too, and cinnamon sprinkled grilled pineapple for palate cleansing purposes. In between servings, we grab some assorted side dishes from the buffet. Brazillian salad, tacos and seafood; it’s all of that top-rung brunch standard we’ve come (perhaps unreasonably) to expect from buffets in the region, but it’s undoubtedly the waves of skewered-beef that are the main protagonist of this story. Reluctantly, we turn the disc to red and hit pause on the meat climb, because with an all-you-can-eat service, the summit is never liable to loom into view. We’re here to enjoy the journey, and that we very much have, cheerily heading off to base camp for a light round of cheese and dessert. And, maybe, a bit more beef. Verdict: Chamas is, without doubt, one of the city’s top steakhouses and this churrascaria package is an essential excursion for the capital’s meat fanciers. a InterContinental Abu Dhabi, Al Bateen, Wed to Fri 6pm to 11pm, food only package Dhs325, soft Dhs385, house Dhs485, kids Dhs175. SHANG PALACE

A new dainty dim sum lunch menu f you’re the type that appreciates good Asian food, there’s a strong chance you’ll be well acquainted with the concept of dim sum. Chomp-sized pockets of pastry stuffed with intense aromatic flavour combinations that, when pinched between a pair of chopsticks and dipped into some neighbouring soy, light-up a truly unique constellation of palate points. The memory of these taste experiences then becomes fuel for desperate, spontaneous road-trip types of craving. Which is why we’ve just parked up outside Shangri-La Hotel Abu Dhabi — they’ve recently launched a new all-you-can-eat lunchtime daily dim sum deal. Combined with the fact that it’s just Dhs138, it has real game-changing potential. We’re taking our lunch alfresco, on a corner table of the courtyard terrace. It’s a romantic setting, shaded by neat palm trees, just up the beachy banks of the resident khor’s waterway. Our waitress arrives to take our order for round one, and with it being an allyou-can eat affair over a leisurely threehour stretch, it’s more about pace than race. We select shrimp and chicken siew mai, some crispy beef wonton and wild mushroom dumplings. The dainty collection arrives bearing the hallmarks of highly skilled dumpling chefs. Each perfectly symmetrical piece is recreated with laser precision, and the first bites confirm authenticity of flavour. Higher forms of Cantonese yum cha are as much about ritual and aesthetics as they are flavour. And it’s all here. Firm, juicy, joy-sparking nuggets piqued by exotic spices of the Orient. Our next dim sum serving (walnut puff stuffed with roasted duck meat, lotus and black bean sauce; cheng feng waffle scallop and shrimp roll; and large seafood

I

‘soup buns’) is supplemented with wokfried noodles and charcoal-grilled lamb. The steamed buns gush with gingerinfused soup when pressed by a knife, like the Guangzhou equivalent of poached yolk piercing. The puffs are elegant, artful little morsels and the cheng feng roll, radiating with umami, is an unassuming contender for star dish. More courses follow. Crispy teriyaki river shrimp; steamed wild mushroom buns with chicken and oyster sauce — that look like

actual mushrooms; seafood puffs that look like enchanted gobstoppers; and egg fried rice that looks like, well, egg fried rice but is delicious despite a lack of parody. We’d like to be able to tell you that we ate responsibly, stopped when we felt full, and had plenty of space for dessert. But that would be a lie. We over-indulged, and we regret nothing. Verdict: At Dhs138 this genuinely could be one of the best value meals in the capital. It’s an authentic, artistic, flavourpacked treat that satisfies pretty much all of the senses. MEET THE BARTENDER

NISHANT TAMANG Mixologist at Lexx, Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi

I was quite nervous when I first started out as a bartender. But it helped me to discover myself, and now I love it. Service, passionate staff and a great atmosphere are the key ingredients to a perfect bar. You should also be able to read your guests and make great recommendations for them. Being a bartender isn’t just serving drinks. It’s like an art – you need to feel the ingredients and know what combinations would work well together. Favourite gadget? The strainer. It helps me serve drinks in their purest form. My favourite cocktail is the shaken martini. But I love to serve customised cocktails that let me demonstrate my expertise. Overrated cocktails? A lot of the classics such as Long Island Ice Tea, Negroni, Aperol Spritz. Sure, they serve a purpose but they do not create a distinguished experience. I would love to serve Conor McGregor, the UFC star. I’d love to sit with him and taste test his personal whiskey one day. That would be quite an experience. a Grand Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Residences, Tue to Sat 5pm to 1.59am, Tel: (0)2 510 1234. @lexx.abudhabi

Annex Abu Dhabi

Amapiano grooves and gourmet bites at sunset Hear that? That’s the South African sound of Amapiano – a heady mix of deep house and jazz – reverberating from the rooftop of Annex at the impossibly cool The Edition Abu Dhabi. While we love the trendy venues in Abu Dhabi, Annex is in a league of its own. Patrons relax on cream-coloured furniture in tucked away nooks on the rooftop. There’s a stylish firepit in the middle of the bar giving off a lovely warm glow as the sun sets over the marina. It’s all seamlessly complimented by a music genre so cool, you’ll be Shazam-ing songs throughout the night. Ideal for night brunch fans who want upmarket cocktails and good food, Annex boasts a dizzying array of cocktails to choose from and the staff are only too eager to share their favourites. Meanwhile, the food comes in waves, starting with an exceptional charcuterie and cheese board with crispy, toasted bread served alongside a large bowl of guacamole and homemade taro crisps. Other highlights include the vegetarian

steamed bao buns with shitaki mushrooms that are equal part fluffy and tangy, and the beef sliders served as a set of four, each perfectly structured and cradled in a crisp sesame bun. If you fancy a glass of the good stuff while pairing your choices with delicious tapas-style sharing plates, Annex is the only way to go. a Amapiano brunch, Annex, The Edition, Abu Dhabi, Fri 5pm to 11pm (three-hour experience), Dhs288. TRESIND STUDIO

Modern Indian dining as you’ve never experienced before e must admit that you almost didn’t have the pleasure of reading this review. We were reluctant to revisit Tresind, the modern Indian dining restaurant on Sheikh Zayed, not because we didn’t enjoy our experience there five years ago, because we did. It’s just that we typically try to focus our attention on reviewing new restaurants, otherwise we’d be the size of houses. But, having been persuaded by a trusted friend to give it a go again, we walked out the door having learned a valuable lesson: Never underestimate the talents of chef Himanshu Sami again. Tresind Studio is the chef ’s table experience serving only 20 guests per service. It’s hidden behind a door in the larger Tresind restaurant, and manages to be refined with its legion of well-trained staff and yet still deliver food with serious kick and intent. Chef Himanshu has chosen Le Jardind (Gardens of India) for this season’s menu, which means that the rectangular room looks a bit like a garden centre meets university dorm room with hundreds of potted plants lining the windowsills, complete with garish floral blinds. It’s a little kitsch for our taste but what matters is the strident, full-on food that embraces herbs and floral flavours within each dish. Over the course of the next two hours we’re treated to 13 jaw-dropping dishes (Dhs395 set menu), beautiful both in presentation and taste. The traditional pani puri is elevated to otherworldly levels as we’re presented with a tall vase of smoking cucumber liquid, which is poured into two delicate puffs. You can try eating them daintily but you’ll get the contents

down your shirt. It’s far better to slip the whole thing in your mouth in one go. There’s the crunch and then the burst of fresh cucumber sweetness as well as the final kick that’ll make your eyes pop. The star dish comes early amid the starters. Served in a beautiful black bowl filled with water and floating flowers rested a lamb tartlet topped with turnip, and nasturtium leaf. A delicious piece of art. From the curries the butter chicken broth is an outrageous cup of tangy yellow cloying goodness served with a charred yet tender chicken skewer. We slurp loud and proud enjoying each pungent swig. The chaat, eloquently placed on a plate surrounded by real roses, has an inbuilt

culinary timer. You get the sweetness of the chutney and the fresh crunch of the fried bread fritter first, before the sudden punch of spice heat. We could go on describing each of the 13 dishes in detail but we wouldn’t want to spoil the culinary surprises of Chef Himanshu. A unique restaurant, a masterful gastronomic experience that’s worth returning to again and again. IN DUBAI

TWIGGY BY LA CANTINE

French Riviera swagger on the banks of Dubai Creek ubai residents are a welltravelled bunch, so how do we cure our wanderlust when we’re effectively grounded? Fortunately, we no longer need a passport to be transported to the South of France, with Twiggy by La Cantine bringing French Riviera swagger to Old Dubai. Sitting pretty on the edge of Dubai Creek at the Park Hyatt Dubai, Twiggy combines a supermodel of a beach club with a stunning French-Mediterranean restaurant. It comes from the team behind Dubai hotspots La Cantine du Faubourg, Ninive and Lana Lusa, who bring their hospitality nous and on-point aesthetics to the fore. With its curvaceous infinity pool, private beach and breezy alfresco restaurant overlooking the water, Twiggy

D

is everything we love about destination dining, minus the airport queues. On the ground floor, sunworshippers take languid dips in the 100-metre pool, before topping up their tan on a sunbed, or seeking out the seclusion of a cabana. We skip the beach on this visit, instead heading upstairs to the sun-drenched terrace. Twiggy’s dining space is entirely alfresco (which may prove to be too hot to handle once summer sets in), but for now, this is one of Dubai’s finest spots for lunch. The sinuous terrace capitalises on those holiday-worthy scenes below, with a coastal colour palette of sand and cerulean blue, huge rattan light fittings, and market umbrellas providing some much-needed shade. Showcasing the sunshine-bright flavours of the French-Mediterranean, Twiggy’s expansive menu is made for savouring en plein air. It features a series of cold and hot starters, grills and seafood pastas, as well as a sushi selection that seems slightly at odds with the otherwise Euro-centric menu. To start, we share a delicate dish of lemony crab and avocado spooned into crisp lettuce cups (Dhs154), and wagyu

carpaccio with shaved parmesan and peppery rocket (Dhs88) – it’s a generous serve that needs to be scooped up quickly before it heats in the sun. Main courses include a faultless linguine alla vongole (Dhs145), with briny, oil-slick strands of fresh pasta, sweet vongole, and the pep of lemon zest, parsley and chilli. From the grill, we select seabass fillet (Dhs140), served simply with a little mop of samphire and a lemon-butter sauce. For dessert, pineapple carpaccio (Dhs82) is a deceptively simple dish comprising tissue-thin curls of pineapple formed into a giant sunflower. Finished with lime zest, passionfruit and a scoop of coconut sorbet, it’s the epitome of summer on a plate. It’s the kind of ingredientdriven, unfussy cooking that transports you to holidays past – and that’s something we can all appreciate right now. a Park Hyatt Dubai, restaurant daily noon to 1am, beach club daily 9am to sunset. Let the music play Flash Entertainment has developed Regional Artist Spotlight to shine a light on our region’s most talented musicians

E

vents behemoth Flash Entertainment knows a thing or two about talent. Over the years its team has brought some of the best concerts, comedy gigs, festivals, and sports tournaments to the capital. And for the last six years it has also seamlessly interwoven local talent into its roster of events, through the Yasalam Emerging Talent Competition. In an attempt to continue supporting artists throughout the year, Flash Entertainment has developed Regional Artist Spotlight (RAS), a new campaign to help elevate local talent further. And as great fans of the region’s talent, we’ve teamed up with Flash to introduce you to some of these emerging stars. First up, UAE-based Somalian rapper, Freek…

Local Artist Spotlight ONE TO WATCH: FREEK How did you get into music? I have always been into music. My passion for it started when I was about 13 years old. At the age of 17, I was around a lot of homegrown artists like Timothy Vaughn AKA ‘Young Vaughn’. I was there when he was working on his albums, shooting music videos, and during recording sessions at the studio, which helped me learn how to sample beats and how to 46_What’s On

MUSIC

record my own music. Who are the artists, or people, who inspire you? Young Vaughn is definitely one of the people that inspired me to do what I do and one of the biggest influences in my career so far. What are your latest musical accomplishments? I was recently part of Fire in the Booth - UAE Edition with the legendary Charlie Sloth. It is yet to be released but I am really excited for the world to see it. I was also invited to perform at the Flash Live, Eid Celebrations in 2020 during lockdown, which allowed me to continue sharing my music with my fans. Before that I had the chance to perform at Sole DXB and at the Yasalam After Race Concerts, opening for Future and Gucci Mane.

What are your latest releases? Khali Wali and Shwaya are my latest two releases. I am really proud of these songs and what they represent for me. How has your experience with Flash Entertainment (such as being the opening act for Future & Gucci Mane) helped you grow as an artist? I loved the experience of being part of the Emerging Talent Competition. It was a great experience during quite an early stage of my career and I benefited a lot from the workshops the platform provided me. The experience taught me a lot about the inner workings of the music industry and being around a lot of talented artists really inspired me. Being the opening act for Future & Gucci Mane at du Arena was a milestone for

me. I was performing in a venue I used to work in as an usher and in the ticket box office! It made me realise nothing is impossible.

What does being a part of Regional Artist Spotlight mean to you? What the platform is aiming to achieve is fantastic for artists like me. Being able to be featured across so many different channels will open up my music to my fans and potentially a new group of fans who don’t know it yet. I have heard about some of the artists that will be featured as part of Regional Artist Spotlight and the line-up is incredibly talented and diverse and will definitely shine the spotlight on some of the best artists the region has. q @RegionalArtistSpotlight; @freektv

uilding a museum that aims to tell an entire nation’s story is a lofty goal. But that’s exactly what The Zayed National Museum aims to achieve. When completed, it’ll stand as an architectural marvel, a fitting home for the inspiring story of our great nation and its visionary founder. Located on Saadiyat Island, the stunning building designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster, features a set of distinctive towers deliberately reminiscent of the wingtips of a falcon.

Exhibits will include photographs, documents and items from the late ruler’s own private collection.

Falconry and Conservation Gallery This wing will explore Sheikh Zayed’s love for the natural world, and focus on the important works of conservation carried out under his patronage. We’ll get to see exhibits that demonstrate his passion for falconry, its importance to national heritage, and why an enduring fondness for it persists today. In the UAE’s remote far west lies Abu Dhabi’s most treasured island. With its acacia-studded plains, this hidden gem was originally the private retreat of UAE founding father Sheikh Zayed. His love of animals inspired him to turn Sir Bani Yas Island into a wildlife reserve and bring many native species back from the brink of extinction. Today, the island is home to thousands of free-roaming indigenous and introduced animals, including Arabian oryx, sand gazelles, and even giraffes, llamas and cheetahs. A range of once-in-a-lifetime activities is offered by the resorts to showcase the island’s stunning surroundings including nature & wildlife drives, biking, nature walks, culture & history tours, horse riding and an array of water sports including snorkelling, kayaking, diving and more. Sir Bani Yas is now home to three distinctive Anantara Resorts: The family friendly Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara is styled with eye-catching Arabian touches and antiquities echoing the UAE’s culture and history. Meanwhile, Anantara Al Yamm Villa Resort is located on the Eastern beach of the island and is reminiscent of an ancient pearl fishing village with contemporary style. E bike in the desert Power over dunes as UAE-made electric fat bikes land in RAK

O

ur guide zooms ahead on his blimp-like bike, making easy work of the rolling dunes inside the beautiful RitzCarlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert compound. We’re a bit shaky at the start, chasing him up near-vertical sand mounds on a Saluki Liwa 2.0 electric fat bike with tyres more than twice as wide as those on our regular two-wheeler. That excess rubber helps us to fly downhill and float across the lengthy sand plains, but these beasts are in their element going uphill, too. Just one generous twist of the throttle, or a few hardy pedals, and we’re propelled forward as if we’re riding motocross. While the fat bike craze is in full swing around the world – especially in the US, where they were designed to be an easier means of cycling through snow – the Saluki Liwa 3.0 electric fat bikes were built especially to make mincemeat of the UAE sands, with the ability to travel at up to 40 kmph.

Despite the wacky proportions of the fat bike, it takes only one ride to understand its appeal: it’s a thrilling experience. Make no mistake, this is more action bike than a lazy cycle and you’ll work up a proper sweat bashing the dunes. The huge 4.8in

Editor Laura with her new e-wheels

tyres create a wide contact patch with the ground, grabbing up traction on loose sand and riding proudly like an FJ Cruiser, ploughing over anything in its path. Across the harder plains, you can cycle less, throttle more, and simply enjoy the wildlife around without disturbing them. For the most part these burly bikes are pretty stable, provided you’re going in a straight line. The sheer size of the wheels can make it harder to steer and it’s easy to fall sideways up a dune if you’ve not got the stamina – or enough throttle – to keep riding. But it’s hard to deny the fun factor. The rates for the guided electric fat bike experience is Dhs250 per person per hour, Dhs400 per couple per hour, Dhs400 per person for two hours, or Dhs700 per couple for two hours. Well worth it, in our opinion. a The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, Tel: (0)7 2067777. ritzcarlton. com/en/hotels/uae/al-wadi-desert/offers What’s On_53

SPORT // XQUARRY

Rock and roll A huge off-road adventure park opens in the Mleiha desert

54_What’s On

I

f your idea of the perfect weekend involves off-roading, trail running, and obstacle-course racing, then you probably don’t need us to tell you that you’re an adrenaline junkie. You’ve also probably got a long list of places you like to venture out to in your downtime. But, if that’s your idea of fun, then we think you’re going to love XQuarry, the UAE’s first off-road and adventure park. Just a hunch. Located in an old quarry in Mleiha, Sharjah, XQuarry Adventure Park is a giant excavation that specialises in offroading, mountain-biking, and good, old fashioned rip-roaring outdoor fun. The nearly one-million square metre quarry is loaded with multiple custombuilt and fully-prepped tracks to tackle. Since there’s plenty of desert off-roading to be had elsewhere, XQuarry’s tracks are mostly gravel and rocks, and there’s even a sneaky mud pit to drive through. In addition to the tracks, you’ll find 18 custom-built obstacles simulating different driving situations. These obstacles will challenge your technical skills as well as the capabilities of your vehicle. Right now, the off-road routes are only open to those with their own 4x4s or ATVs, but there will be driving experiences in the future where enthusiasts can rent a 4x4 on site.

Wait, there’s more… OBSTACLE RUNNING For those who prefer human-powered adventure, crawl, climb and get dirty at XQuarry’s permanent obstacle course. HIKING From the park you can go on several hiking routes totaling in distance of more than 12km. Short loops of 3km are also available for beginners and families. The hiking trails are maintained by XQuarry and are only accessible from the park, which means there is a Dhs50 fee. MOUNTAIN BIKING There are approximately 3km of track inside the park that are filled with different obstacles, but if you’re keen to lengthen the trail, cycle on outside of the park for a 10km

loop. Be sure to bring your own bikes as they are not available for hire. REMOTE CONTROL CAR RACING There’s also 500 metres of custom-built remote-control car tracks for those who prefer their vehicles really, really compact. Operators stand in shaded stations and elevated viewing platforms, but again, visitors must bring their own remotecontrol vehicles to play.

NEED TO KNOW XQuarry is currently open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9am to 6pm. Off-road admission is Dhs150 and permits one car and two people full access to the park, including mountain biking, remote control car racing, hiking and obstacle running. Otherwise general admission is Dhs50 per person and excludes access to the off-roading area. For more information, visit xquarry.com. What’s On_55

THE GUGGENHEIM New York, USA

UFFIZI

Florence, Italy It’s a little known fact that the huge, fabulous building of the Uffizi was not created as a museum but as a rather boring council office. It was ordered in 1560 by Cosimo I de’ Medici, first Grand Duke Of Tuscany, to house the administrative and judiciary offices of Florence – yes uffizi means offices in Italian. Now the place is over-run by lasagna-laden tourists rather than stern secretaries, but it’s still a place of great seriousness: you can’t take art this good lightly. The history of the splendid building combined with the collection of masterpieces is unforgettable. Must-see: The Birth Of Venus by Botticelli q uffizi.it

CENTRE POMPIDOU Paris, France

In 1943, Frank Lloyd Wright received a letter from the art advisor to Solomon R Guggenheim, entreating the talented designer to build somewhere unique to house the family’s art collection in New York. The architect was not a fan of the Big Apple but couldn’t get his employer to change his mind about the location, which led to fraught times. “I can think of several more desirable places in the world to build his great museum,” Wright wrote in 1949 to his friend Arthur Holden, “but we will have to try New York.” To Wright, the city was overbuilt, overpopulated, and lacked architectural merit. But Guggenheim had the money so Guggenheim got his way. All the fighting was for nothing – as both Wright and Guggenheim were dead before the white whirlwind of a gallery was completed in 1959. Must-see: Spanish Dancer by Degas q guggenheim.org

Controversially, this great landmark of France was designed by two Italian and a British architect who won a competition to design a new museum in 1971. It was the first time in France that international architects were allowed to participate – a decision that some proud French regretted when the foreign winners were announced. It wasn’t a popular building at first, the magazine Le Figaro declaring: “Paris has its own monster, just like the one in Loch Ness.” But time has moved on and now this industrial, modern block of tubes, pipes and escalators is a Paris darling, not only offering the coolest art in the city, but offering incredible views – from the Eiffel Tower to Sacre Couer – up on the sixth floor. TRAVEL // ART GALLERIES

TATE MODERN

London, England Officially the most-visited gallery in the world, the Tate Modern not only holds treasures inside, but is a jewel of the London skyline. Standing proudly – and imposingly – on the south bank of the River Thames, this massive former power station has become a powerhouse of the world’s modern art scene. The museum holds the nation’s collection of British art from 1900 to the present day. Opened in 2000, the museum’s many galleries are located off the building’s cavernous turbine hall. Spread across six floors, fans of Cubism, Surrealism, and contemporary installation will be in heaven. The Mark Rothko room is a highlight. Must-see: Jackson Pollock’s Yellow Islands q tate.org.uk

THE GETTY VILLA Los Angeles, USA

This mountaintop Roman Villa houses J Paul Getty’s collection of approximately 44,000 Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. The one time richest man in America (and yet, infamous miser) was passionate about these periods and travelled the globe securing the finest pieces for his home and country. His passion for statues lasted longer than his passion for women (he was married and divorced five times), thankfully, and today more than 1,200 works, dating from 6,500BC to AD400, sit in a stunning house and garden overlooking the blue coastline of Malibu. The gallery’s restaurant is not to be missed either, as it serves organic SoCal delights overlooking an amphitheatre. Must-see: The sculptures Victorious Youth, and Lansdowne Herakles q getty.edu

MUSEO DEL PRADO Madrid, Spain

Spain’s impressive national art museum in the bustling capital of Madrid houses one of the world’s finest collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 19th century. Based on the former Spanish Royal Collection, and unquestionably the best single collection of Spanish art in the world, it became a museum of paintings and sculpture in 1819. The numerous works by Francisco de Goya, arguably the king of Spanish art, is given special prominence in the Prado with an extensive collection. Must-see: Pieter Bruegel’s The Triumph Of Death q museodelprado.es

L A S TMINUTE TRIP On the edge of Abu Dhabi’s jigsaw islandscape sits Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort — a chic hotel with good times on its mind The location Despite being a stone skip away from downtown Abu Dhabi (less than 20 minutes’ drive), this desert island retreat wears a very different sort of wardrobe. It’s within tailgating distance of that famous azure Saadiyat surf, and you can walk directly off the resort into rugged dunes of blanched sand that are topped with tufts of coastal shrub. It feels every bit ‘the escape’, with the benefit of remaining within Careem coverage.

The look and feel The term ‘sustainability’ gets kicked around a lot, but it’s something that’s observably at the heart of what they do here. (You even get given your own refillable water bottle at check-in). And it achieves this, without sacrificing a single atom of luxury. The white facades and an abundance of glass throughout provide a window onto the unique natural beauty in which the resort is found.

The facilities Jumeirah at Saadiyat offers great recreational range without having to scream about it. There are tennis courts, a kids and teen club, three outdoor swimming pools (including infinity bathing and swim-up bar options), watersports (minimal environmental impact options only), a spa with its own hammam and one of the most Instainspiring stretches of private beach available in the region. And if you fix your 66_What’s On

The rooms The luxury doesn’t evaporate at the threshold of your room. Spacious, bright, airy and decorated with a real designer’s eye, aesthetically it’s a sort of modern Mediterranean melange, an on-trend Santorini, with a touch of Cala Salada. Room types run from the Resort Deluxe which comes with a balcony and freestanding bath, through huge Family Suites, all the way to duplex ocean villas.

The food and drinks There are seven different ways to justly earn those extra vacay pounds at this Jumeirah property. All-day diner White

offers international bites and arguably one of the best brunches in the emirate. Mare Mare is your hook up for authentic Italian fare. Recently rejigged rooftop spot Lobster Lounge is not shy about being all about that shellfish life. And Tean has the Levantine flavours covered. There’s also a pool bar, sport’s bar and a majlis-inspired terrace lounge.

The room rates We’ve seen some great residents’ offers at this hotel in the past year, in fact their current ‘Ultimate Staycation’ package nets you 40 per cent off the room rate and extra resort credit. Expect room nights, with breakfast from around Dhs865 per couple. q jumeirah.com
