Embrace the greens more

More sush (yes, really i ) I’m new to Dubai (loving it so far, obviously!) and my son loves sushi. Like, loves loves sushi. So, my resolution is a shared one with him: see how many sushi restaurants we can visit this year. Maybe there’s an ongoing feature for What’s On in that?

To stop being so hard on myself and allow myself the space to be human (and maybe a little selfish). To trust that I’m doing the best I can, even when it doesn’t feel like enough.

Camel races Sounds unusual, but camel racing is a must for your to-do list and it’s absolutely free. The races take place between October and April in the early mornings on weekends. There are several tracks around Dubai, but the biggest is the Al Marmoom Camel Racetrack.

Jameel Art Centre is a free-to-enter art space. Check out the exhibitions, visit the library to read, or sit outdoors and soak in the views of Dubai Creek.

Emirates Bio Farm, Al Ain The largest privately-owned organic farm in the UAE, Emirates Bio Farm is found amidst the red desert dunes of Al Shuwaib. The farm has created a complete visitor experience, which includes a farm shop, outside dining and seating area, experience centre, greenhouse restaurant as well as an Arabian tent overlooking the farm and open desert dunes. There’s also the Farmer’s Table restaurant, serving organic juices, fresh salads and veggie delights. Mazaraa, Abu Dhabi Part cafe, part farm shop, the mantra at Mazaraa is “we sell what we grow”, and that’s exactly what they do. As such, the farm shop shelves are stocked with seasonal produce grown on the land, as well as organic oil and honey from the UAE. To be assured of the freshest produce, you can even go and pick your own on the farm, as well as enjoy farm activities such as feeding the animals, fishing and camel rides, all for a fee of Dhs25 for adults and Dhs15 for children, which gets you entry plus a snack and juice. Making a suitably glamourous splash onto the Dubai dining scene The Spot Cemented as one of the leading names in the UK’s fun-dining scene, Tattu arrives in Dubai, not just as a restaurant, but as a trifecta of culinary experiences. The jewel in the crown of the world’s tallest hotel, Ciel Dubai Marina, guests can drink in panoramic views from the soaring 76th floor infinity pool by day, enjoy sips and bites at Tattu Sky Lounge on level 81, then return to Tattu Restaurant on the 74th floor for a more formal dinner.

The Food and Drinks We arrive for our reservation just as the sun is setting at Tattu Sky Lounge, taking our seats at a window-side table to watch the final rays of light dance over the striking Marina skyline. The lounge is dimly lit inside, arranged around a central bar where bartenders animatedly shake up cocktails. But you’ll want to snag a seat on the covered terrace for the best views. We order a Skull Candy (Dhs80), which arrives theatrically in a skull-shaped glass, dry ice pouring from the top for added effect. With drinks finished, we make our way to the Tattu Restaurant for dinner, again

hen you walk into Nammos Dubai, the greeting is not only warm, but entirely unexpected – it’s Habibi. But this Habibi is no ordinary Habibi. hen news popped up on our socials that WICKED the Musical was landing in Dubai, we were cackling with glee. After years of waiting, Dubai Opera, in partnership with Broadway Entertainment Group, made the wonderful news official: the performing arts centre is bringing the world’s most popular musical to the city. WICKED has captivated more than 65 million audience members across 16 different countries and over 130 cities. Here in Dubai, the spellbinding musical is set to enchant audiences from January 28 to February 15, 2026. If you’re Defying Gravity over the announcement, we’ve got more good news.

This production reveals the untold story of the witches of Oz as never before, featuring reimagined sets and over 350 bespoke costumes. A big magical highlight? It will include a spellbinding scene where a witch flies over the audience – a first for any WICKED production. If you’ve seen The Phantom of the Opera, this is the equivalent of the iconic chandelier drop at the end of Act 1. Ooooh, right? efore sunrise on February 1, 2026, Dubai’s streets will belong to very keen runners. Car tyres give way to trainers and the city’s landmarks become an eye-dropping backdrop to the 25th edition of the Dubai Marathon. First staged in 1998, the race has grown into one of the region’s most established long-distance events and holds World Athletics Gold Label status. Known for being one of the fastest marathons in the world, runners gear up each year to shatter their PBs whilst getting a unique frontrow seat to the awe-inspiring Dubai architecture.

The route The 42.195km race begins near Madinat Jumeirah, before heading along Al Sufouh Road and onto Jumeirah Beach Road. The layout is famously flat, with wide roads, long straights and minimal turns – ideal conditions for both personal bests and elite-level performances. Stunning Dubai landmarks line the course. The Burj Al Arab is the standout, rising above the route and reappearing at several points along the way. Nearby, the wave-like Jumeirah Beach Hotel frames the coastline, with glimpses of the Arabian Gulf along the palm-lined roads. Runners pass close to the entrance of Palm Jumeirah, whilst further along, the scenery shifts as Downtown Dubai comes into view, anchored by the Burj Khalifa on the horizon.

RACE-DAY NOTES Expect early-morning road closures, so whether you’re running or spectating, plan your trip ahead – yes, it’s an early start, but there’s nothing like seeing the whole community out together.

Sardinia, Italy Italy has never been a stranger to eager tourists, but with traditional hotspots like Rome, Florence, and the Amalfi Coast now feeling the strain of overtourism, smart travellers have turned their attention to a part of the country situated just left of the boot-shaped mainland: Sardinia. The second-largest island in the Mediterranean after Sicily, luxury-seekers can head to the Costa Smeralda to enjoy lush views of the turquoise waters that have earned it the nickname ‘the Emerald Coast’.

Bilbao made it onto Skyscanner’s trending destinations list for 2026, with UAE-based travellers’ searches for it having increased by a whopping 167%. With more flights now available into the country, GCC travellers can hop onto internal connections with ease. The rise of astrotourism has also placed Spain’s Basque Country onto the wishlist of travellers looking to catch a glimpse of a rare celestial event: A total solar eclipse will take place on 12 August 2026, and among the best places to watch it from include – yes, you’ve guessed it – Bilbao. While there, visitors would also be remiss not to visit the Frank Gehry-designed Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, or the chance to go pintxos barhopping in the picturesque Casco Viejo (Old Town).

As the kingdom works steadily towards its Vision 2030 goal, The Red Sea is fast becoming one of the most exciting new tourism destinations in the Middle East. Drawing in local, regional, and international travellers alike, the first resorts there opened in 2023 and 2024, and the highly-anticipated Shura Island began welcoming guests last year. Not only is the city a centre of innovation, making it a hub for tech enthusiasts and business travellers alike, it’s also home to a number of majorly significant historical and cultural sites, including the Forbidden City and the Llama Temple. A recent report from Skyscanner revealed that travellers from the UAE are eager to explore more of the world’s less-trodden paths, with destinations such as Varna, Bilbao, Krabi, and Bengaluru on their list of rising stars for 2026. Paro – a valley town in western Bhutan where the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery is located – is among them, with searches for the destination up by 149%. Travellers are enticed by Paro’s tranquility and spiritual appeal, bolstered by crisp air, mountain views, and unique wildlife, plus a new twice-weekly Drukair flight between Paro and Dubai making it easier to access for GCC travellers.

This historically-rich city in the northwestern corner of Switzerland also happens to be in a unique tri-border location, found at the confluence of the Swiss, French, and German borders – making it an ideal jumping-off point for travellers who want to make the most of their time in Europe by incorporating day trips or extending their travels across more of the Schengen Area. Meanwhile, a SmartFlyer report shared that cultural currency is impacting travel trends for 2026, with buzzy, timely cultural events creating a major draw for global travel. The flagship Art Basel event, which takes place in Basel each June, and the Basler Fasnacht – the largest carnival in Switzerland, which takes place between February to March each year – adds to the location’s prominence. This year-round destination also offers a series of coveted festive markets during the winter season.

As more direct flights there launch from East Asia, and more global connections follow, this once-sleepy fishing village is readying itself for not just a tourism boom, but an absolute transformation. So what’s the appeal? Pristine beaches, vibrant marine life, cultural attractions, jungles, mountains, and markets all in one place – plus a casino and an amusement park to boot.

More and more UAE travellers are becoming aware of Varna, Bulgaria’s “Pearl of the Black Sea”. And it’s easy to see why, with many drawn in by its golden beaches, ancient Roman ruins (including Roman baths), and coastal strolls. A more affordable and lesscrowded alternative to other European seaside haunts, you can still get there via indirect flights on flydubai, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Etihad.

A mountain reset THE STAY

There is something grounding about driving next to a mountain. Not past it. Next to it. It makes you feel small in a good way. Driving into Jebel Hafit Desert Park, Pura Eco Retreats, the sky looks a little bluer and the rocky tan sand pressed up against the limestone mountain suggests this weekend getaway offers more than just an escape from the city.

THE SETTING Jebel Hafit Desert Park sits at the foot of Abu Dhabi’s highest peak and stretches across nine kilometres of protected land. It is about a two-hour drive from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. This is a place steeped in history, recognised for its UNESCO significance and home to archaeological discoveries that go back thousands of years. The famous Jebel Hafit Tombs, dating back 5000 years, were excavated in 1959 under the direction of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

WHAT TO PACK is glamping done properly. Luxurious but still connected to the landscape. The dome has a private outdoor plunge pool, views of Jebel Hafit, a comfortable en-suite bathroom and an outdoor rain shower.

Lightweight clothes, comfortable walking shoes, a warm jacket for evenings, proper SPF and, just as important, a willingness to put your phone down.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Heritage tents start from Dhs900 per night for two adults and two children. Dome tents with a private plunge pool start from Dhs2,250 for two adults. Deluxe lodges start from Dhs1,800, while Premium lodges start at Dhs2,800.

The restaurant is styled like a traditional Emirati majlis, with low seating in warm earthy tones, cultural artworks and the mountain as your backdrop. The breakfast spread is generous and distinctly local. Expect dishes like balaleet, shakshuka or tomato egg scramble, chibab or khameera bread, Emirati foul, grilled halloumi, zaatar feta, roca salad and sweet date syrup. In the evening, there is the option of a BBQ under the stars.

THE ACTIVITIES The park offers guided hikes, walks to the restored ancient tombs, camel rides, bike rentals and even electric skateboards. Families will find enough to keep kids entertained, while adults can choose their level of adventure. Do not skip a visit to the Hafit Tombs.

WHAT’S ON THE BILL

THE FINAL SAY This is a stay for anyone who needs a reset. It is about standing still long enough to feel where you are. You leave lighter than you arrived, with dusty shoes, a full camera roll and the sense that you have reconnected with something essential.
