Looking smart, living smarter Emirates Man is a magazine that encapsulates the future of men’s lifestyle in the region – knowing that style and substance are intrinsically linked. It speaks to a man who not only appreciates the finer things in life like the craftsmanship of a Swiss-made watch or the sensation of driving a prestige car on the open road, but also strives to be informed, emotionally intelligent and financially resilient. Ambition and authenticity are important to him in equal measure. And like the UAE, his vision of himself is as a member of the new global elite: a world citizen who travels frequently; who has more in common with an MBA graduate from Mumbai now working in Hong Kong than he does a guy who has never left his home town. He’s a man of the future and Emirates Man speaks his language.

our interview at Al Maha Desert Resort and Spa halfway through the shoot. Yet despite Olivia’s 4am call and the fact that a vicious shamal sandstorm is tearing through the set, playing havoc with the expensive equipment and practically blowing the fragile model over, she remains a consummate professional, never once complaining and stoically smiling through stinging eyes and mouthfuls of gritty sand. On the contrary, she is resolutely blithe, insisting she’d much rather be here than in her bitterly cold native New York and preferring to chat in a secluded outdoor courtyard as opposed to her air-conditioned suite.

With a jam-packed upcoming schedule that will see the in-demand society swan touching down for bookings in Seattle, London, Paris and Tokyo, it’s bordering on miraculous that today’s shoot, followed by her appearance at the Cartier International Dubai Polo Challenge at Dubai’s Desert Palm, has come together at all. But, just like she manages her very modern, multi-faceted career, the poster girl for style is taking it all in her stride. Maintaining that “there is nothing out there that I cannot handle, I love a challenge”, Olivia tells me that she loves the fact that her career is all-encompassing, but, when pushed to pinpoint her favourite aspect of it, says, “Consulting with new and emerging talent in the fashion industry.” It’s this willingness to jet off to other countries and open her eyes to more cultures that helps her shape her classic, yet edgy look. “I am inspired by street style around the world, from Tokyo, to NYC and London – the women that I see in passing, throughout my travels, really keep me on my toes when it comes to new trends and dressing.” Epitomising glossy, New York polish, her quick fixes to looking pulled together include “a great pair of heels, a classic watch, and a perfectly tailored blazer”. But it’s her beady eye and her observation of worldwide trends that help keep her perspective of fashion so fresh and formative. “When SOA NECKLACE, C A R T I E R I see a woman hailing a cab in NY DRESS, LANVIN wearing a dress from Zara and then see that SHOES, JIMMY C HOO same dress on a woman in Tokyo but styled so differently – and their individual personalities are on full display with how they choose to style it – that’s exciting. One may be more bold with

”Hello, I’m Olivia,” a sanguine voice greets me as a bewitching beauty glides out of the desert with all the poise and grace of a gazelle, her long dainty arm outstretched for a firm handshake. Seeming to also possess a gazelle’s exceptional aler tness to sound and movement, she has immediately clocked that the larger than normal posse on set – which includes three burly bodyguards to stand guard over the US$3.5 million worth of Cartier jewels she is draped in – has grown by one. I’ve managed to dodge the fashion team's 3am start and have turned up for

statement jewellery and the other may have some colour blocking elements going on with a blazer.” It is these very women – legions and legions of young girls across the universe – who have backed Olivia on her path of fashion domination, revering her as a career hero. She smiles politely at this label, replying simply and graciously, “I am truly touched that anyone thinks of me that way.” Having launched her website oliviapalermo.com to give readers a glimpse of her world, the style icon is all too aware of the importance of both the web and social media, with her agent, Oliver Seeden, executive director at Promod Model Agency, telling us, “Social media is the heartbeat and the new currency of modern advertising.” A fact that can’t have eluded the likes of Mango, Hogan, Roberta Freymann for whom she launched a jewellery line, Spanish jewellers Carrera y Carrera, or Stuart Weitzman, who invited her to design a shoe for charity. Olivia also became the brand ambassador of the 2013 Maasai Project for Pikolinos, appeared as a guest judge on Project Runway as well as for Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model, and was named as the best dressed New Yorker of Page Six in 2012 as well as Chadstone's first Spring Summer 2013 ”Icon of Style”. Most recently she was appointed the creative director for Ciaté London, and shot a short film for La Mer’s Spring Illuminating Moments Campaign, showing her and her model/ photographer husband, Johannes Huebl, getting ready in the morning. “It’s always great to work with Johannes,” she grins. “We feed off of each other’s energy and we had fun with that shoot. It’s a shame he couldn’t join me now as he’s never been to Dubai,” she adds, “but he’s working in Berlin.” When it comes to her own beauty routine, the 29-year-old cites “youth” as being the secret to always looking fresh-faced and natural, but does admit to regular appointments with dermatologist Dennis Gross and La Mer products for keeping her skin hydrated.

For the big day – the Cartier Polo – Olivia, as is to be expected, looks effortless, a vision in loosely draped monochrome polka dots and slicked back hair, all the better to accentuate her delicate, doe-like features. And, for the tuned-in, brand savvy virtuoso, it’s always a chance to show off her wealth of industry knowledge. “I love the handbag,” she gushes, pointing at my flamboyant Paula Cademartori bag, but is less enthusiastic about my spiky Louboutins, good-naturedly enquiring if I need a plaster for my unmistakably battered ankles. Regarding Cartier itself, it’s safe to say that it’s a match made in heaven with the always ladylike – and yet distinctly modern – mogul summing up the luxury brand, and, indeed, its devotees in two words: “Pure class.” The jewellery house clearly goes hand in hand with her distinguished Connecticut upbringing, as she recalls, “My aunt once told me, ‘It doesn't matter how much something costs, if it’s good then it’s good!’” With her love of expressive jewellery, most notably chunky necklaces and rings, the style maven holds the sentimental pieces her mum has passed on to her closest to her heart, but is also quick to hone in on the next big thing and is a huge fan of local designer Nathalie Trad’s shapely, structured accessories. She can’t tell us, just yet, about the other up and coming designers she has eyes on because, she promises, there are big things about to be announced on her website. Her own fashion line is a dead cert to be one of these. “I definitely would want to do this, but I want to

make sure the timing is right,” she admits, concluding that with so much interest expressed in an OP label, it would be witless not to make it happen. What may come as a surprise to many is that fashion is not the only entity that keys her up. A Bikram yoga and FlyBarre devotee, she’s also a fan of horse riding, polo and ice hockey, and claims that “in another life I would have been a sports commentator!” We can only imagine the sartorial shake up of sports studios that could have ensued… With her keen, unparalleled eye for detail – “The style in the Middle East is very beautiful. I’d say it’s classic but youthful at the same time” – along with her own clear set of style rules – “I’d team a brooch, or a stack of bangles and a patterned head wrap for a pop of colour to accessorise a classic black abaya” – the modernday Audrey Hepburn has given a whole new spin to the epithet ”fashion consultant”. And she leaves Emirates Woman with a rare insight into the real Olivia Palermo – as opposed to the one we’re used to seeing through a scripted or posed filter – while managing to retain just enough enigma to leave us wanting to know more. n

O

ne of Business Of Fashion’s 500 people shaping the global fashion industry, actress Razane Jammal caught her big break in Olivier Assayas' Carlos, and has gone on to star in Kanye West's Cruel Summer, Tobe Hooper’s Emirati horror, Djinn – her first lead role – Scott Frank's A Walk Among The Tombstones – alongside Liam Neeson, no less – and Robert Guédiguian's Une Histoire De Fou (Don't Tell Me The Boy Was Mad). The latter enjoyed a glittering opening at the Cannes Film Festival last month. While she may still be on the periphery of being a household name, that doesn’t mean Razane is not in hot demand. On the contrary, she’s an intrepid actress who is starting to wrap Hollywood around her dainty little fingers. Couple this with her high-end modelling shoots and the 27-year-old is nigh on impossible to pin down. After a manic couple of days in Seoul, South Korea, for the Chanel Cruise Collection 2016 show – and to shoot our cover story – Razane managed to pop back to her birthplace of Beirut (via Dubai), before spending a night at her home in London (where she studied) en route to the Cannes Film Festival. It’s just after she lands in London that we manage to catch up over the phone. Understandably, given her peripatetic existence, the actress, who recently resided in New York, is reluctant to claim anywhere as home, simply saying, “At the moment I’ll live wherever the work is.” She’s making the most of her rootlessness. “Whenever I travel I just absorb everything from all the different people I meet – it feeds me as an actress and widens my repertoire,” she says. It’s one of the reasons she adores Dubai so much. “I love spending time in the UAE because of the people I always meet there – so many beautiful, unique and talented people from all over the world. I’ve never met so many interesting people as I have in Dubai; it’s a real definition of a melting pot – of both culture and talent.” Of her whirlwind trip to South Korea, Razane enthuses, “Seoul was so new and so different. It was a quick, crazy, exhausting experience. We slept for three hours a night, but it was fantastic meeting new people and experiencing new things.” Having caught the attention of Chanel last year, it’s a reciprocal love-in between the newest ambassadress for Chanel and the brand itself. “I love how Karl integrated Seoul into the collection, paying homage with nods to Korean traditional dress. Like in his Dubai show last year, he bridges the gap between the East and the West. And, of course, the cut and the fabrics are all incredible.”

But she insists the film industry still has a long way to go – both with increasing the ratios of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and when it comes to gender equality. An active participant in the #HeForShe campaign, launched on International Woman’s Day in March 2015 by previous EW cover star Emma Watson, Razane was photographed standing tall, armed with a “We can match the machos” banner. She’s disconcerted that feminists in this day and age are still getting a bad rap. “I feel like too many people have the wrong idea of what feminism is. You don’t have to go around badmouthing men in order to be a feminist. There are things I would never have accomplished without many of the important men in my life, like my father.” The actress felt an alliance with Chanel’s faux-feminist protest show last September where Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into a street-like catwalk. “As a woman who comes from the Middle East, I always get emotional when I see my deepest thoughts expressed so loudly and clearly. It gave me a sense of pride and belonging,” says Razane of experiencing this show first-hand. “I had the exact same reaction when I watched Emma Watson’s speech for HeForShe or [Nigerian novelist] Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie explain why we should all be feminists.” While Karl has expressly said that Coco Chanel wasn’t a feminist, her legacy and the fact that she changed the course of fashion history is unassailable. “Everyone who wears Chanel feels a synergy in one way or another,” says Razane, who bought her first Chanel handbag aged 17. “She was a pioneer, she made it OK for women to wear black and she was the first to introduce trousers for females. Her energy was incredible and you feel this when you wear Chanel.” Not afraid to voice her opinions, Razane has her own very defined idea of what feminism means. “Being a feminist means being able to give my Lebanese nationality to my children, when I have them, it means getting paid equally for doing the same job. I don’t want to shove it down people’s throats, but there are more subtle ways of standing up for your beliefs and getting people to pay attention.” One such way was posting an incredibly moving and powerful message to her 13,200 Instagram followers on International Woman’s Day, urging everyone to unite, speak up for their rights and confront issues such a trafficking, underage marriages, abuse, violence, female genital mutilation, disrespect, degradation and inequality.

Having grown up with strong women, it’s almost inevitable that this feisty, feminist firebrand has found its way inside of her. Citing both her mother and her grandmother as the most influential women in her life, Razane’s voice overflows with emotion and passion as she describes her grandmother, who sadly passed away three years ago. “My grandmother played a huge part in shaping who I am today. I know a lot of people say that about their grandparents, but she was adored by thousands. She was an art teacher who studied history and all of her students loved her. She had this way of making everyone feel special and like they mattered, she never judged anyone. She had so much compassion for all of humanity and she honestly taught me to be a better person. She was so educated – she was like a walking encyclopaedia – and she imparted so much knowledge to me. I got to spend a lot of time with her.” It was also her wonderful grandmother, who Razane used to perform and dance for, who encouraged her to be an actress, because her mother – “as any other mom” – was worried about the pitfalls of the industry. So what if Razane ends up having a daughter who wishes to follow a similar path? “My supporting her would depend on why she wants to be an actress. If it’s a true passion I will encourage it, but not if she wants to get into it for the wrong reasons, i.e. just for fame. Her desire will have to come from a very real place. And then I will be there to guide her and equip her with all the tools she will need. She’ll be lucky to have me there – I had to find my own way.” Career guidance and inspiration have come to her from what may seem like an unlikely source. “Working with Kanye West was amazing,” she gushes. Hearing the unconcealed scepticism in my “Really?” she continues, “He’s a true visionary, very cultured and very hard working. He is so talented and knows exactly what he’s after when he’s working on something. I learned a lot from him.” She may be on first-name terms with the Kanyes, Karls and Kristens (Stewart) of the world, but Razane is adamant she will not turn her back on her roots. “The Middle East is evolving so much – in all industries, whether it’s fashion, acting or in terms of business – so it is still very important for me to be involved in projects here,” she says. It’s safe to say that Razane, who is proving to be such a positive role model for this region, will soon be able to pick and choose between projects both abroad and closer to her ancestral home. Her fairy tale journey only just got started. n

Razane’s been acting since she was six but it’s really only in the last couple of years that her hard work has started to pay off on a global level, carving a name for herself as a new kind of Hollywood heroine. Describing herself as “ethnically ambiguous”, the petite, blue-eyed beauty, with her porcelain skin and shiny dark hair – which she claims to cut according to the phases of the moon – is taking full advantage of her interchangeable looks. “I’ve been incredibly lucky in that I have managed to play so many diverse roles. In Une Histoire De Fou, (which opened at this year’s Cannes Film Festival) I play an Armenian woman. I played the Lebanese wife of an Emirati man in Djinn, for which I had to brush up on my Arabic, I’ve acted in Egyptian series Embratoreyet Meen, I’ve played a Ukranian/American/Lebanese character, I’ve done French and Jordanian roles… being ethnically ambiguous is definitely a strength,” she says. This attitude is in stark contrast to the one she possessed when she was first making a name for herself. Razane insists that her quote on Imdb.com – where she claims she was always being told that “you’re not Lebanese enough/not American enough/too tall/too fat/too skinny” – is an old one and she’s since transmuted her ethnicity into something far more positive. “I love submerging myself into the background, history and culture of the character I’m playing or the film I’m in. In Une Histoire De Fou I learned so much about the Armenian genocide, which I believe so many people don’t know anything about. And the more I learned the more I was determined that everybody should know about it.” If you had asked her ten years ago if there are enough roles for Arabic actors, she would have said no, but she’s grateful this has changed. “Nowadays there is much more diversity in the industry, boundaries are opening up, there are less stereotypes and Arab actors no longer have to be confined to playing terrorist roles,” she says with a wry laugh.
