The glass Take it from us, the glass matters. Use a tulip-shaped glass that flares wide and high. This will ensure that the bubbles rise elegantly, leading to optimal flavour and aroma development. The temperature There are different optimum temperatures for tasting Moët & Chandon. For non-vintages you should keep your bottle at 8-10°C, while vintages should be a little higher at 11-12°C once out of the fridge. If you’re chilling the bottle in an ice bucket, fill it with one-third water, add ice to half way and wait until it hits optimum temperature.

SEE THE BIGGEST TREE IN THE BIG APPLE There are few New York City buildings as iconic as the Rockefeller Center – and few American Christmas traditions as loved as the lighting of its massive tree. On November 30, the Norwegian spruce will shine to the power of 50,000 LED lights in front of the art deco masterpiece’s ice rink. The lighting ceremony is one of NYC’s dazzling draws every festive period. But there’s far more to Christmas in New York than the Rockefeller Center. Broadway’s historic theatres will packed to the rafters with revellers eager to take in a winter show, and The Merchant’s House, a preserved 19th century townhouse in the East Village, will host an acclaimed adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. If you happen to find yourself in Manhattan on December 10, you can expect to witness one of the borough’s most divisive recent trends – SantaCon – in which thousands of costumed Kris Kringles run amok among NYC’s best bars and restaurants until the early hours. WANDER GERMANY’S FESTIVE MARKETS If it’s Christmas markets you need, then there’s nowhere better than Germany. Towns and cities up and down the country will host a celebration of food, drink and music throughout the advent period. But it’s fair to say that some are better than others. Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt has been going since 1628, and might just be Germany’s best Christmas festival. Its beautiful old town, on either side of the Pegnitz River in Bavaria, plays host to a smorgasbord of sights, sounds and tastes including local gingerbread, sausages and, of course, piping hot Glühwein. The Christkindlesmarkt is also packed with homemade wares – mass-produced goods are verboten – including the odd ‘Prune Men’, small dolls made from dried prunes and figs. Festivities aside, Nuremberg has plenty to keep tourists happy, not least its almost-millennium-old castle, a number of top-line museums and Albrecht Dürer House, dedicated to the city’s most famous artist. Berlin, Germany’s manic capital, may be better known for its megaclubs and low-lit bars. But the Hauptstadt also throws a mean Christmas party, whether it’s the markets at Alexanderplatz and Potsdamer Platz in the city centre, or the picture perfect, one-weekend-only event at Richardplatz, a historic square in the city’s southeast. At Christmas, Edinburgh’s reputation as a global cultural centre springs to life even more so than usual. Like most British cities there’s plenty of family fun to be had here, including ice skating, the switching on of Christmas lights and all manner of markets. But the home of the famous Fringe Festival of comedy, and the Edinburgh International Festival, pulls out all the stops at Christmas – and, of course, New Year, or “Hogmanay”. 28

Theatre fans can enjoy famous stage shows like Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and Last Christmas, while families can navigate a Christmas maze, hop on a reindeer ride, or visit Santa’s Grotto. It should come as no surprise that a hillside city with such a reputation for its beauty should host one of the UK’s most stunning Christmas attractions: the Street Of Light. From November 20 to December 24, its famed George Street will be lit with 60,000 lightbulbs, running alongside music by local choirs and bands including the Edinburgh Festival Chorus, Blazin’ Fiddles and Tigerstyle, Scotland’s premier bhangra group. Add that to dozens of world-class bars and restaurants and there’s enough here for more than just a weekend visit. VISIT THE HOME OF SANTA CLAUS Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland, is often marked as one of the most child-friendly destinations to see in the festive period. That’s because Rovaniemi, a town near the Arctic Circle, has for years been known as the official home of Santa Claus. The truth is far more complicated, and involves a desire to boost tourism following the Second World War, but it now welcomes over half a million people wanting an “authentic” Santa Claus experience. Postal workers dressed as elves even process as many letters per year addressed to the jolly Christmas talisman. If you’d like to tick another bucket list entry off while you’re there, a number of tour operators offer stays in glass igloos, luxury suites and hotels beside good spots to take in one of the planet’s truly breathtaking natural phenomena: the 30

It’s also a great place to celebrate Christmas with traditions going back centuries, and full of colour that you’ll rarely find elsewhere. San Miguel’s well-preserved neoclassical and baroque buildings are a joy to walk around, and its centre has been a World Heritage Site since 2008. Christmas season in San Miguel begins in earnest on December 12, when locals

and all Mexicans celebrate the Virgin of Guadalupe: their patron saint and the “Empress Of Latin America”. Every church in Mexico is adorned with an image of the Virgin, and her day is marked by a large children’s procession accompanied by music, fiestas and plenty of delicious regional food. But this is just the beginning. From December 16 to 24, the city reenacts the nine nights of the posadas – Mary and Joseph’s trek to Bethlehem. Each night a young boy and girl dress as the holy couple and knock on doors to be turned away because “there is no room at the inn”. Expect a shower of colour, from artisanal shops to piñatas and poinsettias. DXB is Best for Layovers Dubai International was voted the world’s Best Airport for Layovers at the Conde Nast Traveller Readers’ Choice Awards Middle East for the second year running last month. The Dubai airport beat its two other final nominees, Doha’s Hamad International Airport and the Changi International Airport in Singapore, chosen by readers of the travel magazine. “This recognition means a lot to everyone

DWC passenger numbers surge Dubai World Central (DWC) is gaining ground in the region as a popular airport for passengers, with traffic surging 161 per cent in the third quarter. DWC welcomed 191,950 passengers during the quarter, a big leap from the 73,466 passengers recorded in the same time period last year, according to a report by operator Dubai Airports. “By the end of the next year the airport will see tremendous growth as it becomes the new home for flydubai,” commented Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths. “We are very happy with the way passenger traffic has been growing at DWC, but this is only the beginning.” The airport operator has plans to expand the annual capacity of the DWC from five million to 26 million passengers. The on-going project is on 38

track to be completed by the third quarter of 2017. DWC’s passenger traffic is mainly driven by flydubai, one of the emirate’s two flagship carriers, which operates 35 weekly flights to five destinations from DWC – in addition to its operations at

DXB’s Terminal 2. Qatar Airways and Wizz Air are the two other major carriers with scheduled passenger operations from DWC. As well as passengers, DWC is home to 32 cargo operators that connect the airport to as many as 107 destinations worldwide.

The 89 metre-high tower has been covered in red, green, white and black, to mark the occasion, which commemorated the anniversary of the formation of the UAE in 1971. Anniversary celebrations mean big duty free discounts Dubai Duty Free will celebrate its 33rd Anniversary with big discounts, up to 25 per cent, on 18 to 20 December. The discounts will be available for all passengers at both Dubai International and Al Maktoum International, for 72 hours from midnight 17 December. “The DDF anniversary promotion is now a highly-anticipated event with many travellers choosing to travel on the days when the 25 per cent discount is offered,” said Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO. When Dubai Duty Free opened on 20 December 1983, the operation had 100 employees – 30 of whom are still working there – and now employs almost 6,000 staff and is expected to record US$1.8 billion in sales by the end of the year.

Dubai Duty Free joined a number of leading entities for the Dubai Week in China: Shanghai (DWiC) last month. A Falcon and Associates initiative supported by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce (SMCC), it was aimed at celebrating the thriving relationship between Dubai and China, among government officials, businesses and thought leaders. 42

As part of the event, Dubai Duty Free signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CTRIP, the number one Chinese online travel agency with 141 million active members. CTRIP members flying to Dubai International (DXB) can benefit from a seven per cent discount while shopping at Dubai Duty Free, from January 1 to June 30, 2017.

While in China, Dubai Duty Free also signed a MoU with UnionPay International. Already a long-time DDF partner, this agreement covers future marketing tie-ups. The agreement reflects the importance of the Chinese traveller to Dubai Duty Free who, while accounting for four per cent of traffic at DXB, account for an impressive 12 per cent of sales in 2015.

The Dublin Arabic Film Festival (DAFF) presented by Dubai Duty Free and in collaboration with the Irish Film Institute (IFI), kicked off in Dublin last month. For the third time Jim Sheridan, the six-time Academy Award nominee, served as DAFF president alongside Zhara Moufid, festival director. Events started with a red carpet drinks reception at the IFI, followed by a special

screening of short film 11th Hour, starring Salma Hayek and especially made for the festival by Sheridan. This was followed by Clash, the film by acclaimed Egyptian director Mohammed Diab, set at the time of the fall of President Morsi. Sheridan was joined on the red carpet by U2’s The Edge, the US Ambassador to Ireland Kevin O’Malley, Dubai Duty Free

Tennis stars Angelique Kerber and Sania Mirza won the Singles and Doubles ranking at the WTA Year-End World 2016. Kerber began the season by defeating Serena Williams at the Australian Open, made it to the Wimbledon final, took silver at the Rio Olympics, and won the US Open. Kerber also leads the WTA for most main draw match wins this season, at 59-16. “Being No.1, of course now everybody will try to beat me and have nothing to lose,” Kerber said after her victory in New York. “I’ll try to take this challenge, because it will be a new situation for me.” For the second year, Mirza ended the season as the world’s top doubles player. “It’s been an incredible year for me,” Mirza said. “With seven WTA titles, a Grand Slam and now the WTA Finals in Singapore.”

Salah Tahlak, Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice President Corporate Services and the Tournament Director of Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, was again voted as a member of the ATP International Group Council. This was thanks to a special election conducted by the official body that runs the men’s professional tennis on a worldwide basis. A member of the ATP Global Tournament Council since 2010, Salah is the first and only Arab to be a member of both the ATP and WTA Tournament Councils. He’s been actively involved in the business of tennis since 1993 when Dubai Duty Free secured the first ATP tournament to be held in the UAE.

The fruit is fermented into a Marula wine that is then double-distilled to make a Marula spirit and aged in French oak barrels for two years. Fresh dair y cream is added to create the deliciously velvety-smooth Amarula Cream. Enjoyed on its own, over ice or in a range of delectable cocktails and desserts.

Rule the red carpet T h e b e s t o f H o l l y wo o d a n d A ra b c i n e m a c o m e s to D u b a i If you’re heading into Dubai this month, you really couldn’t have timed your visit any better. National Day parades, Christmas parties, New Year’s Eve celebrations, it’s going to be a fantastic four weeks. I imagine that the only thing that could make it any more impressive would be, say, a conversation with Oscar nominee and all-round Hollywood legend Samuel L. Jackson. Ordinarily, of course, this 82 DUBAI VOYAGER

would be out of the question. But this is no ordinary month. On December 9, the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) rolls in to town for its 13th year, and with it the best of Hollywood, Arab, and world cinema. Eight days of movie premieres, industry talks, actors, directors and superstars. If you’re lucky enough to get a ticket to one of the many red carpet gala events, then highlights include the world premiere of Befikre, the Hindi romantic comedy from Aditya Chopra starring Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor, Emirati director Ali F. Mostafa’s third feature film, dystopian thriller The Worthy, and Tom Ford’s psychological thriller Nocturnal Animals, starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal. Other must-sees include the musical comedy-drama La La Land starring Ryan

Gosling and Emma Stone, and then the big festival close, featuring one of the most anticipated releases of the year, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Of course we won’t all make to the red carpet, but that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out. For big screen action you can head to The Beach on JBR, where the line-up includes A Fistful of Dollars, the classic 1964 spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone and starring Clint Eastwood. And then back to that chat with Sam Jackson – just one of a number of events where you can head down to the festival and potentially interact with the men and women behind the movies.
