W
estern France is a big place. From the tip of the Loire Valley to the verdant hills of Gascony, there are so many places to see, things to do and food and wine to enjoy that planning a trip can feel daunting. However, equipped with a solid plan (and preferably a car), getting the best from a trip isn’t too difficult. It just depends on what you’re looking for. The Loire Valley is top of many visitors’ lists of places to see in France. That’s unsurprising: it is, for many, the home of the country’s gastronomic couture, and jam-packed with historic places to see and things to do. Its northern reaches, which once straddled northern and southern France, include some of the country’s most spectacular chateaux. Beginning in Blois, just two-and-a-half hours from Paris, a trek around the Loire Valley’s best castles will take in Chambord, Amboise, Chenonceau, Chaumont-surLoire and Azay-le-Rideau. Chinon’s hilltop fortress is less refined than others, but no less magnificent – and was where a 17-yearold Joan Of Arc once confronted future king Charles VII. Chinon’s treasures don’t end there: the town is well known for its vineyards and, each April, is flooded with local growers for a weekend event dedicated to wine tourism. Unusually for the region, most of Chinon’s wine is red – the Loire Valley is France’s largest producer of white wine and second largest of rosé – and its dry, light taste is a good stop on any trip into France’s wine culture. It’s difficult to pin down recommended wines in such a prolific region: the Loire River’s 1,000km length is home to 7,000 wine growers, and 70,000 hectares of wine. There are some, however, that catch the eye. Red Sancerres, for example, are often rich and fruity and a great addition to any French cuisine. They are named after the tiny town in the valley’s central Cher department, which is well worth a visit. There you’ll find the Maison des Sancerre, a historic location offering generous DUBAI VOYAGER 27

tours and tastings. The hillside town itself is great for lazy strolls that take in some pleasingly traditional bars and restaurants. Head three hours west of Sancerre and you’ll find Poitiers, a fascinating town whose history has comprised Gaulish tribes, medieval nobility and crusades. It is known for a glut of restaurants that include Jasmin Citronnelle, a quaint, rustic tea room that offers a wide range of locally inspired food and drink. In France, no wine is complete without cheese. Thankfully that’s a mantra you need not eschew in the western region, which enjoys some of the best tasting – and known – brands in the world. Blue du Bocage is a blue goats’ cheese from the Vendée, a region just west of Poitiers. It’s aged for months but retains a delicate flavour rare of its heavyhitting blue cousins. It’s best eaten with a sweet wine, Port or chocolate. Valençay is made in the Loire Valley town of Berry. It is easily identifiable by its bumpy, trapezoid shape. Legend has it the shape was decided upon when Napoleon, reminded of his military defeats in Egypt, lopped the pyramidal tip off a lump of Valençay. It is best paired with a Saint-Émilion wine, or a red Sancerre. No wine lover’s tour of France is complete without a visit to Saint-Émilion. The town, which is full of history – from Romanesque ruins to winding, shop-lined cobbles – is known worldwide for its wine production. In fact Émilion, the monk after whom the town was named, settled into a hermitage there in the 8th century. His acolytes founded the local wine industry that thrives in pretty stores and bars today. To sneak a peek at the winemaking process at its purest visit Cordeliers Cloister. The 12th century Unesco World Heritage Site is still where the emblematic Cordeliers sparkling wine is made, 17 metres into subterranean caves. Tours include a taste of the local produce, which is sure to thrill even the most experienced of wine connoisseurs. Head just out of town for two of the region’s most spectacular wineries. Chateau Troplong Mondot’s hillside estate offers stunning views of the area, while its produce is full-flavoured and deeply aromatic. Not far away is Chateau La Dominique, whose red cellar was designed by famed architect Jean 28

Nouvel. Its rooftop restaurant is a foodies’ delight too, with a menu full of meats and accoutrements to complete any French gastronomic odyssey. Not far away is Perigueux, whose skyline is dominated by the Cathedrale Saint-Front. Its domes and spires may tower over the River Isle but it is truffles, one of France’s great delicacies, that draw most visitors. The smell is intoxicating at the town’s Place Saint-Louis, where in winter thousands can pick up local black truffles. Just half an hour north is Sorges, the Dordogne’s self-proclaimed Truffle Capital. It even hosts a museum that delves into the past and present of the famed Périgord truffle, which can fetch around Dhs3,500 per kilo. A myriad jams and chutneys can also be bought. Further southwest is another gastronomic must: Sarlat. The American writer Henry Miller was enamoured with the town, calling it the “paradise of France”. Between 1360 and 1370 Sarlat was anything but, providing the scene for ferocious battles between the French and English kingdoms. Today, however, as the capital of foodie nirvana Black Périgord, Sarlat is a smorgasbord of cakes, crêpes, crystallised fruits—and paté.

Paté aside Sarlat (full name: Sarlatla-Canéda) is worth a visit. Its gorgeous streets are home to a Benedictine abbey and towering medieval cathedral. It is food, however, that steals the show. Twice weekly Sarlat’s usually quiet centre bustles with buyers for all sorts of fresh produce. The town’s emblem is a salamander. But it is the goose that is its true mascot. Foie gras abounds in Sarlat, and there is even a festival dedicated to its production on the third Sunday each October, the Sarlat Fest’Oie, which includes workshops, tastings and even live music. There is no shortage of restaurants to choose from, either: La Cremerie is a charming, traditional cafe in
the centre of town. Lescaleyrou and Carre Verde, meanwhile, offer grander, more auspicious fare fit for a fancy dinner or two. Head west from Sarlat for about an hourand-a-half to reach Bergerac. It has nothing to do with its long-nosed writer namesake Cyrano; nor the 1980s BBC detective. Locally this small town is synonymous with one thing: wine. The excellent Vins de Bergerac offers tours of local wineries and a wide range of tasting and other events. But when it comes to wine tours of France, the boss of the region is another 90 minutes further west. Bordeaux is France’s sixth largest city. Its Gothic centre is a Unesco World Heritage Site, and filled not
just with tourist-friendly traps but a plethora of upcoming and exciting bars, restaurants and cafes. Bordeaux is a wine capital of the world. Its vines are divided into ‘Left Bank’ and ‘Right Bank’, depending on which side of the Gironde River its grower finds him or herself. Left bank wines tend to be Cabernet Sauvignons, which are known for their dark, full-bodied flavour. The right bank, on the other hand, is dominated more by sharper, vegetal Merlot grapes. Bordeaux’ grand winemakers are just the tip of its gastronomic excellence. The food can well keep up with its liquid stablemate too, and the city boasts a wealth of restaurants any European city would be proud of. Le Bouchon Bordelais is a place that, among its historic surroundings, you could well imagine poets arguing the week’s news over a vintage bottle or three. Head chef Frédéric Vigoroux has crafted a delicious yet budget friendly menu that incorporates many of the city’s favourite dishes. Théo Saint Martin of nearby La Cagette has similarly homely aspirations with his earthy selections, which include some North African options. And the Café Populaire
– or ‘Café Pop’, as the locals call it – is a lively eatery where dancing is as obligatory as eating. It’s a romantic spot and great to meet Bordelais revellers after a tough day sampling local wine. Later on head to Cancan, a semi-hidden cocktail bar where the lights are kept low as the alcohol count isn’t. Bordeaux is the cherry on top of a tour through western France’s food and wine gems. What: Les Misérables Where: Dubai Opera When: November 10 to December 2 Jean Valjean, the ex-convict with a heart of gold, has had many faces over the years. From Hugh Jackman to Liam Neeson and Gérard Depardieu, some of acting’s finest have taken on the epic male lead of Les Misérables. It might have started out as a 19th century Victor Hugo novel, but Les Mis is now best known as a hit stage show. In the 31 years since it opened at London’s Barbican’s theatre, it’s become the world’s longest running musical and seen by more than 70 million people. Rather than flowery sing-a-longs and upbeat dance numbers, this musical follows the dramatic tale of Valjean, trying to live an honest life and raise the orphan Cosette, all while being hunted by the relentless Inspector Javert in 19th century revolutionary Paris. The musical was always going to do well with Cameron Mackintosh behind it – the master producer counts Cats and The Phantom Of The Opera in his portfolio. But even Mackintosh couldn’t have predicted that, three decades later, the musical would had inspired no end of adaptations on both stage and screen. A 2012 star-studded Hollywood film featured Russell Crowe’s questionable singing and Anne Hathaway’s Oscar-winning performance, and 14 years earlier, Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush and Uma Thurman led another Hollywood version – this time concentrating on the Valjean-Javert rivalry. GETTING AROUND So you’ve arrived in Dubai, but what next? Here are the best ways to get around the city
TAXI All terminals at Dubai International (DXB) and Dubai World Central (DWC) have their own official 24/7 taxi rank. Your taxi metre will begin at Dhs25 (Dhs10 anywhere else in the city) and has a rate of Dhs1.92 per kilometre. Expect to pay Dhs60 from DXB to Downtown and Dhs110 to Dubai Marina. The pink-topped taxis have female drivers and are for women and families.
TRAM The tram starts near the Palm Jumeirah, travels down Al Sufouh Road past Media City and into the marina, where it loops around close to the beach at JBR.
METRO The Dubai Metro is clean, air-conditioned and linked directly to Terminal 1 and 3 with clear signposts. The trains run roughly every 10 minutes from 5.50am (10am on Friday) to midnight (1am on Thursday and Friday). You can buy your ticket at the station and the price will vary depending on how many zones you cross. Alternatively, buy a Dhs20 Nol card and top it up as you go. For Downtown and Dubai Marina head to the platform for UAE Exchange at DXB. From DWC the nearest station is Ibn Battuta Mall, which can be reached by bus or taxi.

WATER TAXI ABRA Before the first bridges were built in the 1960s, traditional abra boats were the most efficient way to cross Dubai Creek. At just Dhs1 per trip, it’s a fantastic way to see the city, as well as cross from Bur Dubai’s Textile Souk to the Spice Souk and Gold Souk in Deira.
Skip the traffic and take to the sea by hopping on a water taxi from one of the many stations along the coast, from Jebel Ali Golf Resort to Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Al Mamzar. From Dubai Marina Mall to the Waldorf Astoria on the Palm Jumeirah, expect to pay approximately Dhs195. They’re available throughout the day and can be booked online in advance. Dubai Airports raises Dhs1.25 million for charity Dubai Airports has helped raise Dhs1.25 million (US$340,600) for the international eye care charity Orbis, through its ‘Your Sight, Our Happiness’ campaign. The charity is best known for its flying eye hospital and this money raised with partner organisations is enough to help restore the sight of up to 31,000 children suffering from cataracts worldwide. The campaign was launched in March, under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman of Dubai Airports. A campaign highlight was the Plane
Pull content, which saw ten teams made up of airport staff take on the challenge of pulling National Air Cargo’s 747 aircraft the furthest distance. Each team also made a contribution to the Orbis via the UAE Red Crescent. “The loyal support of the aviation community and the incredible amount raised through the Plane Pull will allow us to reach even more children desperately in need of sight-saving treatments,” commented Rebecca Cronin, Orbis UK CEO. “A child who can see is a child who has a chance of an education, employment and a chance to contribute to his community and
to flourish.” Teams also played games of basketball, foosball and bowling while blindfolded in order to raise funds as well as awareness. The events, created as part of the initiative, were all supported by a long list of kind contributors. Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports CEO, said, “It is deeply satisfying to know that the collective efforts and generosity of employees of Dubai Airports and our partners, as well as the support and contribution from corporate entities will help improve the lives of thousands of children by restoring their sight.”
DXB hits record passenger highs Dubai International welcomed a record 7.7 million passengers in August, eclipsing its previous record. According to a Dubai Airports traffic report, the number of passengers soared to precisely 7,727,105, which is almost 445,000 more than July. The year-to-date traffic also saw a big increase, totalling 55,850,353 passengers, which is a jump of 6.8 per cent compared to the same time period in 2015. The record-breaking numbers come down to the seasonal rush of travellers and UAE residents returning for the start of the academic year. 40

“Consecutive months with record breaking traffic is a great way to mark the 56th anniversary of DXB”, said Paul Griffiths, Dubai Airports CEO. “Looking back it’s astonishing to see how quickly a tiny airport that was once a refueling stop for airlines has turned into the world’s number one international hub.” The international airport has welcomed more than three quarters of a billion passengers over its five and a half decades. Once again Eastern Europe was the fastest-expanding market in terms of
percentage growth, which was at 67.9 per cent, spurred on by additional capacity and new services launched by carriers such as Emirates and flydubai. In terms on top destination country, however, India remains on top with 924,256 passengers. The UK (584,508) and Saudi Arabia (535,280) took the number two and three spots. While London is still the top destination city with 371,320 passengers, it was Azerbaijan’s capital Baku that topped the list of cities in terms of percentage growth, growing in popularity by 284.5 per cent.

New concourse wins Airport Development award Dubai International’s Concourse D won the Airport Development of the Year award at the 10th Aviation Business Awards in Dubai last month. The US$1.2 billion concourse, which opened in February, received the award that recognises a project that has positively impacted capacity, customer comfort and service quality through innovation, efficiency and a wide range of products and service offerings at a Middle Eastern airport. “Teams across Dubai Airports and our strategic partners […] put in a lot of hard work to achieve the flawless opening of the facility,” said Anita Mehra, Dubai Airports
Senior Vice President of Communications & Reputation. “This award is a recognition of that massive effort and we are very happy to have won it.” The final major element of Dubai Airport’s Strategic Plan 2020, Concourse D has boosted the airport’s annual capacity from 75 million to 90 million passengers. The new facility, which serves airlines operating out of Terminal 1, also boasts open boarding gates allowing them more time to enjoy the shopping, cafes and entertainment on offer, such as #musicDXB and Hangout@DXB.
Emirati star entertains DXB passengers Emirati singing sensation Mohamed Alshehhi wowed passengers in DXB Concourse D with his signature Khaleeji fusion songs, in a special concert for #musicDXB on 13 October. Launched in November 2015, Dubai Airports’ #musicDXB initiative features live airport concerts and diverse performances from global acts, to connect the world through music. Local favourite Alshehhi, who currently boasts 442,000 followers on Instagram, was the latest star to perform, following shows from Australian rising star Grace, UK swing quartet Jack Pack and several of the UAE’s top acts. DDF CEO inducted as Master of the Quaich Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, was inducted as ‘Master of the Quaich’ for his contribution to the Scotch Whisky industry last month, in Blair Castle in Perthshire, Scotland. McLoughlin was one of five members to be inducted as Master of the Quaich, just one decade after being made a member of the ‘Keepers of the Quaich’. Both titles have been in recognition of the work Dubai Duty Free has done in promotion of Scotch Whisky since 1983, when its business at Dubai International began. 44

The Irish Village wins big It’s official, The Irish Village has been declared winner of the Irish Pub of the Year award at the annual Irish Pubs Global Awards Gala Dinner held in Dublin in September. The Dubai institution, found in Garhoud, beat some serious international competition, including The Jar of Dublin, Caffrey’s Irish Bar of Prague and Tír na nÓg of Denmark. Part of the Dubai Duty Free Leisure Group, The Irish Village was first opened 20 years ago as a venue to fuel the crowds attending the Dubai Tennis Championships. Colm McLoughlin, Dubai Duty Free Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented, “We are delighted that The Irish Village has been named “Irish Pub of the Year” in this milestone year. C
ognac, perhaps more than any other spirit, typifies high class and sophistication. Whether it’s the beautiful decanters, the long, noble history of those who make it, or the deep, rich taste, there is just something magical about a good Cognac. It’s important to remember that all Cognac is brandy, but not all brandy is Cognac. Along with many famous names in the food-anddrink world, the term ‘Cognac’ is protected, just like Parma ham, Camembert cheese and Champagne, so when you find a bottle bearing 48 DUBAI VOYAGER
the name, you’ll know it’s the real thing. In Cognac’s case, this means a brandy that can only be made in six areas, or Crus, in the Charente departement of southwest France. Eaux-de-vie from each Cru has its own distinct flavour and nuance, but the two best are Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne (nothing to do with the famous fizz; the term is derived from the French for ‘chalky soil’ and refers to the famous terroir of the region). Cognacs bearing the name ‘Fine Champagne’ must only contain Cognac from these top-two Crus, with a minimum of 50 per cent from Grande Champagne, and are
typically full-flavoured and spicy. Unlike whisky, which is made from barley, wheat or rye, the raw ingredient for Cognac is grapes, usually Ugni Blanc, also known as Trebbiano in Italy. The grapes are made into wine, then distilled twice in onion-shaped copper pot stills before being matured in French oak barrels. But as the barrels sit quietly – the best of which are set aside in a special cellar romantically known as a paradis – their contents slowly evaporate, and this ‘angel’s share’ equates to a staggering 20 million bottles a year. You won’t be surprised to hear that the

history of Cognac stretches back hundreds of years. The French have been growing and cultivating grapes since Roman times, but it wasn’t until the Dutch arrived in the 16th century that wine started to be distilled to prevent it from spoiling on the long sea voyage back to The Netherlands. This ‘burnt wine’ (brandewijn in Dutch) came to be known as ‘brandy’, and by the 1700s, the big Cognac houses had been established, and many are still active today. Almost all Cognacs will have one of the following on the label: VS, VSOP and XO, which simply refers to the length of time the Cognac has been left to mature. VS (‘Very Special’) means that the youngest eau-de-vie in the blend will be at least two years old; VSOP (‘Very Superior Old Pale’) will be at least four years old; and XO (‘eXtra Old’), a minimum of six years, although in practice, it will be much older, typically 15 to 20 years or more. Other terms, such as Napoleon, Extra and Vielle Réserve are on a par with XO, while those labelled Hors d’âge (‘beyond age’) indicate very long maturation, and usually very fine indeed (and expensive). All well and good, but how do you enjoy Cognac? The good news is that it is an incredibly versatile spirit. It is delicious served neat or on the rocks, but VS/VSOP also makes a fantastic ingredient for a long drink (try it
mixed with ginger ale or tonic water with a dash of Angostura Bitters) – serves like these saw Cognac enjoy a huge resurgence in the US, with numerous hip-hop artists namechecking it in songs. Over in Asia, the term XO has long been associated with luxury – there, top-end Cognacs are big business, with bottles such as the iconic Louis XIII from Rémy Martin enjoying cult status. But when you try a really good, mature Cognac, it would be a crime to turn it into a cocktail. Just pour it into a glass – serve it in a delicate tulip-shaped glass rather than one of those giant balloon versions, because the tulip helps to lock in all those precious aromas – and savour it slowly. The aromas of a good Cognac will evolve in the glass, moving from soft fruit through to orange marmalade, toffee and sweet spice; older bottles will display the famed rancio aromas of leather, tobacco, roasted nuts and even autumn leaves. Oh, and avoid ice – once you add it, you’ll deaden the aroma and flavour; your Cognac won’t thank you for it. We can only recommend you give Cognac a try. It’s softer and sweeter than Scotch whisky, with none of the heavy smokiness of Islay/ Highland malts, and is oh-so-easy to drink. It’s also a great match with a good cigar, and also aids digestion after a big meal – what are you waiting for?

Return of the Sevens G e t re ad y fo r D u b a i ’s b i g ge s t we e ke n d o f t h e ye a r While Dubai’s social calendar gets bumped up a notch with every passing season, there’s no denying that the Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens remains, unofficially at least, the region’s number one weekend of the year. While that claim might appear dazzling, not to mention a little arbitrary, it’s one that can be supported in just a couple of sentences: a weekend of top class sporting action, with thousands of 74 DUBAI VOYAGER
revellers and a party atmosphere to rival a music festival. Throw in the fact that you’re actively encouraged to dress like Spongebob Squarepants and you can see where we’re coming from on this one. The first tournament on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Dubai will carry an even greater significance this year as you’ll be watching Olympians in action. For the first time in 90 years Rugby Sevens was featured as an Olympic sport, so be sure to check out the men’s side from Fiji and the women’s team from Australia, who both took home the gold from Rio last summer. The event that began in Dubai 47 years ago with a small group of expats is now firmly cemented on the Sevens map, with the emirate pushing strongly to rival Hong Kong as the premiere stop on the 10-date series. But it would be foolhardy to believe
that this is simply about the sport. In fact the truth of the matter is that some people will go the whole weekend without seeing the slightest glimpse of a try. No rugby for them, these people face their own battle... in the scrum for the bar. The social side of the weekend gets more impressive with every passing year. This time around expect food trucks loaded with everything from healthy snacks to dirty burgers. If you’ve managed to bag some tickets for the Emirates hospitality tent, congratulations, you’ve just discovered Dubai Rugby Sevens nirvana. If all of that isn’t enough, well there’s also the small matter of Rugby Rock, too, with both the Friday and Saturday evenings closing with live music.
