The Swing Revue Formed thanks to a shared love of swing sounds, this fun-to-watch Dubai-based boogie-woogie band is made up of a collection of musicians from Australia, Denmark, England, Finland and the Philippines. Exuding vintage style, in 2016 the group played well-loved jazz and swing melodies from the 1920s to the ’50s at Dubai International.
Grace Unless you’ve been under a rock for the past year, you will have heard Grace’s cover of Lesley Gore’s You Don’t Own Me, featuring G-Eazy (it was also on the soundtrack for Suicide Squad). The 19-year-old Australian singer – who recorded her debut album with Quincy Jones – appeared at DXB in 2016.

The UK quartet – made up of four dapper guys who reached the finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2014 – got #musicDXB off to a swinging start in November 2015. Performing to a rather surprised but delighted looking audience who soon had their smartphones out to capture the action, their act included an amazing rendition of The Doors’ Light My Fire.
Comprised of Emirati singer Hamdan Al Abri and the band Funk Radius, this group released their first original commercial single Sunny Daze – recorded in Dubai and mixed and mastered in London’s legendary Abbey Road Studios – earlier this year. For their 2015 performance at DXB, however, the group performed a funky cover set.
Twenty-six-year-old Saudi-born Hamza – who signed with Sony Middle East after winning X-Factor Arabia in 2015, but then left the label to pursue his own musical interests independently – performed a set at Dubai International during 2016’s festive season that included acoustic versions of tunes like No Diggity by Blackstreet and Thrift Shop by Macklemore. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Filmed in Downtown, Deira, Palm Jumeirah This epic movie – starring Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton and Jeremy Renner – includes scenes shot at the Zabeel Saray, Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Khalifa. You know that part of the movie where Cruise dangles from the Burj Khalifa? That was real, with Cruise actually suspended from the world’s tallest building, at 12

Independence Day: Resurgence Filmed in Downtown Dubai and Dubai International Airport The second part of the epic 1996 Independence Day movie franchise showcases one of Dubai’s most iconic structures: the Burj Khalifa. In the film, the landmark comes hurtling out of
the sky, nose first, to crash down upon London (pictured opposite page, bottom far right).
Star Trek Beyond Filmed in Downtown Dubai and JLT So, it’s obvious the sci-fi community has a crush on Dubai. The second film from the genre to shoot in the city, this movie (pictured bottom left) recorded some epic street scenes in the emirate in 2015 to

represent its fictional Federation space station, known as Yorktown. The US$185 million release – which featured a stellar cast, including Simon Pegg, Idris Elba and Chris Pine – also hired hundreds of Dubai-based extras.
Top Gear and The Grand Tour Filmed in DXB, Dubai Marina, Dubai Mall, Downtown and Oman The current Top Gear team – featuring Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris and Rory Reid – flew to Dubai earlier this year to race cars, yachts and planes between Dubai Marina and Oman (pictured left), with both of Dubai’s airports featuring in the show. In one of the show’s segments, LeBlanc flew to Oman on a private jet via DXB, while Harris took the Bugatti Chiron - the world’s fastest car - for a test drive on DWC’s runway. The former Top Gear trio – Jeremy Clarkson (who was sacked from Top Gear in 2015), Richard Hammond and James May – also appeared in Dubai this year, although they came to shoot the seasonone finale of their independent show, The Grand Tour, part of which was recorded in front of a live studio audience at the foot of the Burj Khalifa. Do you recall a video doing the rounds on social media featuring someone driving a military tank through one of Dubai Mall’s walls? Well, that was Clarkson.

t’s hard to believe, but Issey Miyake – the visionary Japanese fashion designer who managed to blend his country’s artistic skill with European haute couture – is turning 80 next year. ucked into the southwest corner of India, this is the subcontinent’s smallest state, but don’t be fooled by its diminutive size. Heaving with tourists and 1.4-million locals, this vibrant area is bursting with a range of traveller experiences, from aromatic foodie journeys to kaleidoscopic-hued trance parties and sun-kissed beach sojourns. With Goa’s main attraction being its eighty-mile coastline and safe-to-swim-in turquoise waters, the latter makes total sense. If you’re thinking of taking a vacation soon, consider spending Diwali in Goa. Beginning on October 19, Diwali – known as the Festival of Lights – is India’s biggest annual festival. The five-day event celebrates the victory of good over evil and light conquering darkness, and literally means ‘rows of lighted lamps’. Essentially a week of feasting, fireworks, candles and bright lights, there are several legends that surround Diwali, with Goan locals celebrating Krishna, who is said to have defeated the demon Narkasur. During this special time, it’s not uncommon to witness huge effigies of Narkasur being marched through the
streets, with a collection of them being filled with fireworks to portray light overcoming darkness. Some of these huge figures – created using straw and paper – are also set alight at dawn in the villages. Locals decorate their homes with vibrant lights and vivid patterns, called Rangoli, on the floor. Made with coloured powder and rice, they are believed to bestow good fortune. Diwali is also a time for gifting, mainly with incredibly vibrant – and moreish – sweets and savoury food. If your palate loves a little fire, try Chakli. Spicy spirals made of a variety of flours, spices, carom and sesame seeds, and chilli powder, this is a wildly popular snack with locals and tourists alike. Another popular Diwali dish that Goans love is Vatana Usal. Cooked with dried yellow and green peas, onion, garlic, tomato, tamarind and a range of spices, this soul-warming meal offers authentic Goan flavours. Go there for: the glamour

maller than Manhattan’s Central Park, the principality of Monaco – a sovereign city-state, country and microstate located in Western Europe – is one of the smallest independent states in the world, second only to the Vatican. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in year-round wealth and glamour. The majority of Monaco’s entertainment offerings centre around a handful of time-honoured venues that have been continually intellectually reinvented since the country piqued in popularity when Prince Rainier wed Grace Kelly in 1956. Like Las Vegas, Monaco feels a little bit like a dreamland – just a very posh one. Largely conceived by Rainier III, the prince who governed the area from 1949 until his passing in 2005, today the almost frozenin-time city still retains an air of fantastical mid-century glamour, exuding a subtle Breakfast at Tiffany’s vibe with elegant Art Deco buildings to match. If you’re after more than just beautiful views of the sparkling Mediterranean, check out the entertainment schedule at the Salle Garnier. This lush sea-facing venue – designed by Charles Garnier, and featuring three types of gold, and steel beams designed by Gustave Eiffel – opened in 1879 and has seen an assortment of class acts perform there since. Think Plácido Domingo, Serge Diaghilev’s Russian ballet, Maurice Ravel, Lana Del Ray, Carla Bruni, Lionel Richie, Patti Smith, Prince, Jane Birkin and the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival. A somewhat louder and perhaps less classical affair – although definitely the most popular party in town – is the Monaco Grand Prix. Held at Circuit de Monaco in May, this elite event takes over the entire principality when it comes to town, and sees the who’s who of old and new money coming together for

the event. Got connections and cash to splash? Drop six figures for the weekend and access one of the handmade yachts docked in the Monaco Yacht Club. Just far away enough from the on-land madness, expect to sip on bubbles with F1 drivers, actors and a maybe a royal or two. If you’re after more traditional luxury accommodation – replete with as-famous faces – book in at the Hotel Hermitage. This upmarket Belle Époque palace is home to high society and has managed to pull off the old-school glam of a 19th-century mansion – replete with delicate gold leaf flourishes and marble pillars – only with contemporary service befitting of a property of this class. If all your partying has worked up
an appetite, Alain Ducasse’s restaurant, Le Louis XV, is the best place to sample the most sumptuous fare in town. End the night by heading to Jimmy’z to rub shoulders with Monte-Carlo heirs, celebrities and socialites all out to blow their trust funds. Dress to impress for this one, or risk being turned away at the door. If you’ve fallen in love with Monaco, why not buy a property in the area? Over 8 million passengers pass through DXB in July 2017
Dubai International has recorded its busiest month in history, with over 8 million passengers travelling through the airport in July.
Passenger numbers totalled 8,065,789 in July 2017 – compared to 7,616,792 in July 2016 – an impressive growth of 5.9 per cent. During the first seven months
of the year, DXB welcomed 51,120,057 passengers, an increase of 6.2 per cent compared to 48,124,043 passengers in the same period in 2016. “We’ve started the second half of the year on a very positive note, with the upward trend expected to remain strong in the third quarter,” Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, said of the figures. South America was the fastest growing region in July, with traffic increasing by 59 per cent, followed by Asia at 20 per cent – with China and Thailand as top contributors to traffic from the region – Eastern Europe at 16.3 per cent, and Africa growing by 9.1 per cent. India remains the top-destination country with 1,028,508 passengers, followed by the UK with 610,151 passengers, and Saudi Arabia with 573,170 passengers. The most popular destinations served from DXB by traffic volume are London, then Kuwait, Mumbai, Bangkok and Riyadh.

Dubai International celebrates 57th anniversary
DXB has celebrated its 57th anniversary on September 30, marking the occasion by paying homage to its past, and development, over the past nearly six decades. The history of DXB is an interesting one. Work on the iconic airport began in 1959, with the airport first being opened – and able to handle aircraft up to the size of a DC-3 – in 1960. In 1963, work on an
asphalt runway began, with the official opening taking place in 1965. In 1969, DXB opened itself up to nine airlines, serving a total of 20 destinations. The 1970s, meanwhile, heralded a range of new developments, including a new, three-storey terminal building, control tower, additional taxiways, lengthening of the runway, extension of aprons, airfield lighting and landing instruments.
In 1980, DXB was recognised as an ordinary member of ACI, with its second runway opening in April 1984, upgrading the airport’s status to a Category II classification. In 1988, passenger throughput at the airport was 4.3 million, a figure that more than doubled to 9.7 million a decade later. In 1998, Terminal 2 was opened, boosting capacity by 2 million passengers, while 2000 saw Sheikh Rashid Terminal – aka Terminal 1 – opening at a cost of Dhs2 billion, and upping the airport’s capacity from 10 to 23 million. In 2002, DXB was ranked the second fastest growing airport in the world, according to ACI, handling 18 million passengers in 2003. It was in 2008 that things really turned around the for DXB, when the world’s largest terminal, Terminal 3, opened for the exclusive use of Emirates, expanding capacity to 60 million. In 2009, passenger numbers had already reached 40.9 million. In total – since opening its doors in 1960 – DXB has seen nearly 900 million passengers make their way through the space, has handled nearly 35 million tonnes of cargo, and has seen its total site area growing to 12.5 square kilometres.

Subhash Bawkar crowned 20th Dubai Duty Free Senior’s Cup Champion Dubai Creek member Subhash Bawkar has been crowned the 20th Dubai Duty Free Seniors Cup Champion, producing an outstanding performance of 40 stableford points, with rhe Best Gross prize was awarded to scratch handicapper Wayne Smith after his superb round of 76 strokes, equating to a stableford point score of 32. The event – that took place in September the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club – saw 81 golfers venturing out on to the stunning course in a bid to be crowned the 20th Dubai Duty Free Senior’s Cup Champion. Dublin Arabic Film Festival Programme Announced Festival President and Oscar-nominated filmmaker, Jim Sheridan, and Festival Director, Zahara Moufid, will see their fourth Dublin Arabic Film Festival (DAFF) – proudly presented by Dubai Duty Free – running from 6–8 October at the Irish Film Institute (IFI) in Dublin’s Temple Bar. This year’s festival, developed in partnership with IFI, includes five films that will be showcased at IFI from opening day. These include opening film Solitaire; as well as Tramontane; Gaza Surf Club; Ali, The Goat and Ibrahim; and Beauty and the Dogs. New screeN heroes The development of portable tech and augmented and virtual technology is changing how we consume (and create) content. Welcome to the future of entertainment
U
nless you’ve been under a rock for the past decade, you’ll know that today’s portable technology already lets you catch your favourite shows, films, music – anything really – on planes, trains, automobiles, in the doctor’s office, the laundromat, and even while having your car serviced. And rightly so. After all, what good is a speedy network and sleek new tablet or smartphone (especially when it’s boasting a price tag upwards of Dhs4,099 in the case of Apple’s new iPhone X) if you can only make phone calls and watch cat videos? A recent study from eMarketer shows that the average time consumers spend on their mobile devices is increasing by nearly a minute per day, with the amount of time they spend watching traditional television dropping by more than 30 seconds in the same time frame. And the younger people are, the more this applies. Americans 44

between the ages of 18 and 24 are now spending more time using smartphones than watching TV, with about a five-hour gap between the two. So does that mean TV is dead? Not yet, but perhaps don’t go making any plans for its future. Yet, even with all this tech at our fingerprints, there’s one thing that smartphones are itching to snatch from their bigger-screened cousins: highdynamic range. For the tech-phobes out there, that means the technique used in imaging and photography to create a greater dynamic range of luminosity than is possible with standard digital imaging or photographic techniques. And smartphone manufacturers are already investing millions to make sure their gadgets have it, with the idea being that they should soon rival big-screen TVs in terms of image quality. LG’s G6, with its 5.7-inch screen, features HDR technology, as does the
LG V30 smartphone. Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium, meanwhile, is the first to boast 4K HDR (2,160 x 3,840 HDR), while the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 also supports HDR content, although at a lower resolution. All of this is especially good news if you like Netflix on the go. The company has pledged to support smartphone HDR by creating better entertainment experiences for its mobile audience. You might very well wonder whether all this investment into better imaging is worth it when you hear the next bit of news, though: that Mark Zuckerberg is keen to ditch screens altogether. Obsessed with augmented reality – that’s the technology that overlays digital imagery onto the real world, kind of like Snapchat – at this year’s F8 Facebook developer conference the tech-company founder chatted about the organisation’s ten-year master plan that looks to turn AI, pervasive internet

connectivity, and virtual and augmented reality into achievable aspects of its business in the next ten years. To boost augmented reality – set to act as a large cog in the future machine that is Facebook – Zuckerberg unveiled its latest Camera Effects platform. Essentially a collection of tools for external developers to craft augmented-reality apps that people can access from the current Facebook app camera, this development could potentially lead the way for Facebook to create the next Pokémon Go sensation, and even build a separate space made up of apps and tools that don’t actually need smartphone marketplaces. The result? A future that has no need of smartphones at all. If you think that’s nuts, consider this: Microsoft – a company that’s already explored a similar arena with its HoloLens holographic goggles – agrees that the demise of the smartphone is inevitable. HoloLens boss, Alex Kipman, recently called the departure of the gadget the “natural conclusion” of augmented reality and its related technologies. Zuckerberg also touched on Virtual Reality (VR) at the F8 conference. While Facebook – that’s invested US$2 billion into the technology – HTC and Sony have all released major pieces of VR hardware of late, aside from a handful of games and short films, there hasn’t really been anything keeping people coming back to the their VR systems. This could change though, thanks to a pair of average looking easy-towear glasses that could potentially project a virtual screen into your living room; one that’s much larger than even your biggest TV. Zuckerberg said, “We don’t need a physical TV. We can buy a US$1 app TV and put it on the wall and watch it.” He added that this technology won’t just change the face of television, but might also apply to smart watches, fitness trackers, tablets, laptops, or any other device that relies on a screen to operate. If you’re worried about whether or not you should invest in a flat-screen TV, tablet, laptop or smartphone, don’t be. A massive part of the planet’s economy still relies on the production of all of these electronics, with even Zuckerberg agreeing that the road to a viable augmented or virtual reality future is still a long and winding one.
