Dubai-based adventurer Adrian Hayes offers Discover a glimpse into his extraordinary life by highlighting some of his greatest feats in the field of exploration, his passion for helping humanity, and the support he receives from JA Resorts & Hotels
“It is not the goal but the way there that matters, and the harder the way the more worthwhile the journey.” So says the famous British explorer, Sir Wilfred Thesiger, in his much-admired account of crossing the Empty Quarter in the travel-book classic Arabian Sands. The journeys Theisger undertook in 1946 and 1947 came when the country, then known as the Trucial States, was on the cusp of great change with the discovery of oil set to revolutionise the lives and fortunes of its inhabitants forever. Today, more than 50 years after the publication of Arabian Sands, a more recent account of crossing the Empty Quarter exposes the extent to which life in the desert and the society that inhabited it have changed. Dubai-based Adrian Hayes, a British adventurer whose travels have taken him to the summit of some of the world’s tallest mountains, across the length of Greenland, to the North and South poles and many other extreme environments, drew inspiration from his predecessor when he decided to take on the great Arabian Desert, a journey he chronicled in Footsteps of Thesiger published in 2013.

L
ike Thesiger, Hayes thrives on the challenges of his experiences, acknowledging that they “bring out the best in me.” In his crossing of the Empty Quarter, a challenge he undertook with six Bedouin companions in 2011, it was water, or rather the lack of it, that posed the greatest threat to the team’s success. “At the time of Thesiger’s first crossing, the area was far more fertile with sporadic water sources, but in 2011 there was nothing,” he says, adding: “I always make the comparison that while lack of water was the greatest single challenge for me and six Bedouin team mates crossing the desert in 2011, it is also one of the greatest single challenges facing the Middle East today.” This wasn’t the only difficulty the team encountered on their journey. Just two hours into the 44-day crossing, Hayes and one of his teammates were thrown from their camels and had to be taken to hospital with concussion. Crossing by camel, however, was a key feature of the expedition as this was the mode of transport used by Thesiger and Hayes was keen to mirror his predecessor’s experience as far as possible. “Thesiger was a true explorer in the historical sense and I have always admired his willingness to leave the rest of the world and throw himself fully into nature and native cultures. Speaking Arabic, I was fortunately able to attempt the same although our hardships in the Empty Quarter 65 years later bear no comparison to his.” Despite the challenges, or perhaps partly because of them, the journey stands out as a highlight in Hayes’ long catalogue of adventures. “When you are on your own with all your worldly goods for up to three months, the challenges and potential for disaster become far greater. As for how worthwhile it was – this was quite simply the most rewarding and unique journey I have ever made,” he says, partly echoing the sentiments of his role model who, more than half a century earlier observed: “In the desert I had found a freedom unattainable in civilization; a life unhampered by possessions, since everything that was not a necessity was an encumbrance. I had found too, a comradeship inherent in the circumstances, and the belief that tranquillity was to be found there.” Nevertheless Hayes is quick to acknowledge how tough the experience was and points out that they had to resort to resupplies in order to survive the arid landscape. Hayes possesses a vital skill for adventurers with a taste for extreme environments – the ability to identify his limits when the situation becomes impassable. “No mountain, ice cap or jungle is worth losing one’s life for and, while I

think that self-belief is one of the greatest tools for success, there has to be a degree of caution, of listening and tapping into nature, and of knowing when to quit,” he says. The importance of this maxim was demonstrated tragically on Hayes’ first K2 expedition in 2013 when he was among a party of 20 attempting the mountain’s notoriously elusive summit. “On our final five-day summit push we reached Camp 2, where the conditions and gut instinct told me that it was too dangerous to push on. Eighteen of us returned to base camp while two climbed on to Camp 3 the next day and were killed in the night by a huge avalanche.” The destructive potential of nature made itself felt again on one of his most recent expeditions when, during an attempt to climb Makalu in Nepal, the earthquake of 18
25 April hit, devastating the Himalayan nation. “It was one thing surviving the quake and altogether another one deciding what to do next. I made the decision that having some unique skills and circumstances – speaking Nepalese, being a former Paramedic and acclimatized to 6000m, having satellite communications and being fully equipped with expedition food and supplies – meant there was no way I could continue the expedition.” Hayes consequently spent the next month trekking to some of the most remote regions in the earthquake-hit areas, reporting, fund raising and treating over 100 people with injuries or illnesses. Though he is open about the fact that he undertakes expeditions primarily for the personal experience he gains, the scope of his adventures to generate publicity and support in addressing global issues is a responsibility he embraces. “Integrity has now become the most important factor for me. I am passionate about the world we live in and speak, write and campaign on a number of contemporary world issues. I’m also passionate about people and my work over 15 years in personal growth, leadership and team development is testimony to that. The knowledge I have gained, primarily seeing the world in a different light, is what is invaluable to my other work.” It’s this work in the humanitarian sector that has attracted the support of JA Resorts JA Resorts & Hotels, resulting in a successful partnership between Hayes and the hotel group. “JA Resorts & Hotels have supported me in all of my work – humanitarian, people programmes and expeditions – for the past three years and their help has been invaluable. It’s a very good match.” Hayes’ next trip will take him back to Nepal to follow up earthquake relief efforts. After that, he will be gearing up for an attempt on Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, which is second only in difficulty to K2. In the meantime he will be busy preparing for the challenge at home in the UAE, where his favourite spot to train for expeditions is the Hatta Mountain range, staying at JA Resort’s local Hatta Fort Hotel. “Hatta Crag has some of the best rock climbing in the country with spectacular views over the surrounding plains and mountains. For cycling and hiking, the mountains offer challenging routes over a wide area and as for the somewhat crazy sport of sand dune running, there is no more brutal form of training,” he says, adding: “The next adventure is going to be extremely hard – so you will be seeing me regularly hiking in the hills of Hatta with a backpack full of rocks.” Adrian Hayes is an adventurer, keynote speaker, business coach, author and campaigner. The Palm Jumeirah, where Dubai won its record, is an ideal site for a fireworks display. Visible from space, the man-made island was built in the shape of a palm tree, which, by night, looks superb when outlined with the colours of thousands of explosions. Up the Burj
Although the Palm Jumeirah display takes the headlines, many Dubai locals prefer the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks display at the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. The spectacle of explosions seeming to leap from the elegant tower is one not to miss. Last year it was estimated that 1.5 million people gathered in the downtown area to watch the Burj Khalifa display. Souk Al Bahar and the area outside The Dubai Mall, where you will find Dubai’s famous fountains, are excellent places to watch the performance.

t was hard not to be overwhelmed by the fireworks display on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai on New Year’s Eve 2013. Pyrotechnics experts lit enough fuses in the first minute to smash the world record for the most fireworks set off in a single performance, a record previously held by an hour-long show in Kuwait in 2011. With such an extravagant performance, the Dubai authorities could be forgiven for thinking the record was theirs to keep, but it wasn’t so. In November 2014, the small town of Søgne, Norway, broke the record again by firing more than half a million shells into the air in a 90-minute performance hailed as a tribute to the 200th anniversary of the Norwegian constitution. t’s busy in the kitchens at JA Manafaru and the atmosphere is just a tiny bit fraught. In ten minutes, guests will arrive at the restaurant for dinner and there are still several dishes to prepare for the Keyn feast on the menu for today. A Maldivian speciality that’s traditionally made to mark celebrations, such as the festival of Eid, Keyn is comprised of numerous dishes including rice, curries, salads, grilled fish and various desserts and served all together on a malaafi dish. This tool – a large shallow wooden barrel in which the dishes are placed and covered with a lid and white cloth before being carried to the table, is central to Maldivian cooking. For Moosa Nazeeh Easa, executive sous chef at JA Manafaru, it represents the very heart of Maldivian culinary tradition. Chef Nazeeh, as he is known, grew up on the nearby island of Naisarure and spent his childhood peering through his mother’s apron strings as she prepared family suppers using the time-honoured techniques and local ingredients of the islanders. “She is a fantastic chef in her own right and inspired me in the art of cooking from a very young age,” he says, attributing his passion for food to her patient coaching in the family kitchen. In the Maldivian village where Nazeeh grew up, cooking was a community activity and people would gather together to prepare large feasts. “I was often involved in cooking for local celebrations. We would get together to cook huge spreads of Maldivian dishes and I remember how the aromas of all these wonderful ingredients used to reach all over the island,” he adds. Today, Nazeeh has put his early training to good use and now shares his experience and expertise with fellow chefs in the kitchens at JA Manafaru. “It’s an honour to be able to pass on the knowledge I learned in my childhood and share our most valued recipes with the enthusiastic chefs here at the resort,” he says. places particular emphasis on showcasing traditional Maldivian cuisine to the clientele at the five-star resort, serving indigenous recipes that he describes as rustic yet contemporary. His food is colourful, thanks to the abundant array of ingredients at his disposal on the islands, including fresh fish from the surrounding waters of the Indian Ocean, exotic fruits from the forests and a rich array of herbs and spices that reveal the huge mix of influences at work in modern Maldivian cooking, including Indian and Asian. Fish, in particular tuna, is a key ingredient in many traditional local recipes and it features in all meals of the day, including breakfast where a typical dish is mashuni, a mix of diced smoked tuna with scraped coconut, onion, Chinese capsicum and lemon juice. Curries are also central to Maldivian cuisine and characterised here by their vivid colours and smooth, creamy flavours. The influence of South India and Sri Lanka is particularly evident in Maldivian curries, which tend to be heavy in fruits such as banana, mango, breadfruit and coconut milk. These ingredients are used in local desserts too, such as Banbukeyo Bondibai – a thick mix of chopped breadfruit, heavy coconut cream, or Dhonkeyo Kajaru – a sweet banana cake that contains coconut and rose water. One of Chef Nazeeh’s favourite desserts is the delicious Huni Hakuru Folhi Dhon Anbu or ‘coconut roll’, which he makes for guests at JA Manafaru. The recipe calls for grated coconut, local ramba leaves, cinnamon sticks, cardamom and plenty of fresh mango in addition to rose water for the batter and coconut cream to garnish. It’s sweet, sticky and moreish
and an enduring favourite among guests at the resort. Nazeeh finds the guests’ appreciation for his local dishes inspiring and runs well-attended Maldivian cooking classes for those who want to take home a taste of the islands. He also incorporates international influences into his cooking, gleaned from the many hours he has spent honing his craft in resort kitchens around the Maldives. He now prides himself on being an acclaimed chef, known for his attention to detail and immaculate presentation of food. t’s hard not to like Gary Barlow. A former teen heartthrob, critically acclaimed songwriter, charity campaigner, X Factor judge and all round nice guy, Barlow rose from post-boy band obscurity to dominate the charts once again following Take That’s grown-up reboot in 2005. Since then he has sold millions more records and fronted a string of record-breaking shows at Wembley Stadium with the band, was enlisted by the Queen to organise her Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and landed a primetime TV gig on the X Factor judging panel. This second phase of the 44-yearold’s career has already outlasted Take That’s 1990s heyday, and Barlow shows no signs of slowing down – he has co-written the score for a Broadway magazine
musical and spent much of last year promoting his album, Since I Saw You Last, his first solo release since 1999’s Twelve Months, Eleven Days. After a hugely successful solo gig in the UAE last year, Barlow along with the Take That boys are coming back to Dubai to perform of all their best tracks on 30 October at the Media City Amphitheatre. Here, we talk to Gary about his plans to conquer Broadway and the songs he wishes he had written. How long do you spend per day writing songs? I write a lot but not every day. FOOTWORK Most coaches will tell you that you should split-step, which is pivoting the foot in the direction where the ball is heading and get to the ball as soon as possible. This is critical for establishing a solid foundation for a properly timed backswing.

RACKET PREPARATION This is the backswing taken before the point of contact. It may not sound like much, but racket preparation is a key to generating power because it is the source of your racket head speed – an essential to hitting a hard ball. For your shot to become the most effective, timing is critical. Late and early backswings can lead to misplacement of your shots. STRAIGHT BACKSWING The racket should be parallel to the ground at waist level, with the tip of the racket head back first. magazine
TENNIS When hitting your forehand, your elbow should be comfortably close to your body and slightly bent as the arm extends back. If you are struggling to get out of the habit of having your elbow away from your body, try keeping a tennis ball in between your body and elbow. The left hand is used to direct the racket head into a ready position. The hitting arm should always be slightly bent. CirCular BaCkswing Most professionals use a circular backswing, which provides a continuous and rhythmic motion – the tip of the racket head goes back first, with the arm and wrist following. The racket head ascends to eye level, the arm bends at the elbow (not wrist), and the body rotates to the side. Near the end of the backswing, the racket head starts to drop down as the arm straightens somewhat at the elbow (not by dropping the wrist) to the ready position. Depth The biggest mistake most players make is that they hit the ball too low, directly into the net or too short if they do get it over. Your ball, when hit from the baseline, should be roughly twice the height of the net as it goes over. Provided you hit the shot with some topspin, the ball should fall comfortably into the court on the other side of the net. Practicing this drill (on both the forehand and backhand) either on your own or with a partner will pay great dividends for you in the future as it teaches you technique and ball placement. Mental gaMe The average human talks to themselves with somewhere between 300 to 1,000 words a minute! Imagine what you say to yourself during a practice or even in an important match! Where our mind leads, our body follows, so your thoughts are very important. Imagine this scenario: You are serving to stay in a set with a break magazine
point against you. It’s your second serve and you start focusing on not missing the serve. You hear the voice inside your head, “Don’t double fault. Don’t hit the net!” Nine times out of ten that’s exactly where the serve is going to end up. On a simple level, our brain really sees more in pictures than it does in words. When our focus becomes the net or not missing, we picture the net or missing. stretChing Always stretch before and after practice for at least five minutes. Stretching really does make a huge difference. tennis raCket There are plenty of rackets to choose from. Rackets for beginners and junior-sized rackets are relatively inexpensive, but don’t just go for the cheapest – choose one that matches your body and grip size. Ask for advice from the sales assistant. Once you have been playing for a while, don’t assume that once a string has broken the racket is no good and should be thrown away. If it is a good one, it may be worth having it re-strung and having the tension adjusted to suit your play. early preparation You cannot prepare soon enough – turn your hips and shoulders before the oncoming ball bounces on your side. With an A-list line-up and a host of incredible new films, DIFF is stretching out the red carpet for another star-studded extravaganza. Now in it’s 12th year, the film festival is celebrating the next wave of cinema at the Madinat Jumeirah. This time around, DIFF will showcase over 120 features, film shorts and documentaries from around the world, as well as presenting new film talent from the Arab world and beyond. There is plenty to see and do, from movie screenings to gala parties and meet-and-greets with your favourite celebrities. The public can watch the best line-up of films from around the world at the Madinat Arena, Madinat Theatre, Vox Cinemas in Mall of the Emirates or at the free screenings on JBR beach. The Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens is back with lots of exciting sporting action ahead. With thrilling live games, enthusiastic crowds and an abundance of dining options and beer gardens, this fun weekend attracts rugby fans from all over the world. The annual three-day event is held at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai, an expansive development with a capacity for over 50,000 visitors.
