FUTURE ABU DHABI

Yas Bay Projects very rarely get more mega than this Dhs12 billion endeavour in the south of Yas Island. The area includes housing for 15,000 families, 19 parks, retail space, leisure and entertainment zones, a waterfront and pier with 37 food and beverage outlets, a new indoor arena (Etihad Arena), two hotels (The Hilton Yas Bay Hotel and another “lifestyle-oriented hotel brand”), a huge twofour54 creative hub and more.

ETA: Not confirmed. The developers reported 75 per cent completion back in October 2019, but on a project of this magnitude, the pandemic will have caused significant delay. Bearing in mind the Etihad Arena was scheduled (and on track for) completion in April of this year, the first phase is likely to open in Q1 of 2021, perhaps even before.

Etihad Arena This sparkling new arena was already supposed to be open by now. Disney On Ice was booked in for April 15, 2020, but then Covid happened. The good news is that it’s pretty much finished, though with the current restriction on events, we’re unlikely to see any big shows at the whopping 18,000 capacity venue in the immediate future.

ETA: We might have to wait for the post-pandemic era before we start seeing events on stage at the Etihad Arena.

Al Qana Abu Dhabi’s new dining and entertainment destination, Al Qana, was originally scheduled to open at the end of 2020. Located in the Khor Al Maqta region of the capital, the waterfront tourist destination will be home to a huge aquarium, 15-screen cinema, VR zone, E-Sports arena, and a lifestyle and wellness hub. The 8,000 square metre space, known as ‘The Bridge’, will have seven zones dedicated to different forms of health and wellness. Al Qana aims to re-establish Abu Dhabi’s community with activities such as running, cycling, group yoga, HIIT, pilates and more. The seven service tracks are called Move, Pause, Taste, Seek, Choose, Expand and Learn. Each one is designed to provide an ‘ethereal and customised individual journey’, spread across three levels of both indoor and outdoor space, including a rooftop garden lounge. There’ll also be a range of dining options at Al Qana, which we’re told will allow you to sample ‘some of the finest cuisine from all around the world.’ ETA: With the impact of the global pandemic, the original opening date of Q4 2020 now feels unlikely. We’re looking forward to strolling along the luxurious waterfront in 2021.

The Hilton Yas Bay Hotel Located in the new Yas Bay development, this soon-tolaunch 546-key resort puts it in the perfect location for exploring the island’s theme and adventure parks. The Hilton website promises an ‘outdoor pool complex with infinity pool, floating beach, and kid’s club’ in addition to a huge event space. What’s a floating beach? Working off the renders, it looks like an artificial beach on a floating platform, anchored to the hotel’s edge. There’ll be four restaurants and bars, one of which will be the resort’s allday diner. Another we know will be called Osmo Lounge and Bar. ETA: No firm date yet but the developer has stated that, as of September of this year, the hotel is 93 per cent complete. It’s listed on the Hilton Group’s website with a message stating: ‘We’re opening soon but aren’t accepting reservations yet.’

The National Aquarium

ETA: If it opens alongside the rest of Al Qana, it could very well be 2021. If it gets a unique launch, it could just open its doors in 2020.

Part of the aforementioned Al Qana project, the region’s largest aquarium will feature 10 aquatic zones spread over 5,000 square metres, and work alongside the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) to create a ground-breaking rehabilitation scheme. It was “70 per cent complete” as of August 2019, which almost certainly puts it within diving distance now. In addition to showing off local marine life, there will be plenty of exotic creatures too, some friendly (which you’ll be able to swim with), others less so. In all, there will be around 250 species of fish, birds, amphibians, arachnids and reptiles, live underwater shows, and a huge walk-through tunnel.

Snow Abu Dhabi The enchanted-forest themed Snow Abu Dhabi was previously scheduled for completion in the last part of this year, and it’s being billed as ‘the world’s largest snow park’. Construction is well underway at its location inside the $1.2 billon Reem Mall project, on Reem Island. The attraction will span a huge 125,000 square foot area, divided into distinct whimsical zones. We can look forward to themed-characters and 13 thrilling rides and attractions, including an enchanted tree, a snowflake garden, crystal carousel, ice labyrinth, tobogganing and more. It doesn’t matter if the weather outside is frightful. The park will be kept at a rosy-nosed -2ºC, with a 500mm covering of snow (more than enough for beefy snowball building) offering a year-round chill spot in this, our beloved land of the eternal sun.

ETA: Whilst both Reem Mall and Snow Abu Dhabi were due to open in the last part of this year, impact from the pandemic has pushed that date back.

Ikea Al Wahda

There’s a new 23,000 square foot Ikea coming to the capital’s Al Wahda Mall. It will be part of the brand’s growing ‘city store concept’ portfolio. July was pencilled in for the launch date, but then, well the global pandemic struck and like much else in 2020 – the snooze button was reluctantly pressed. But with construction and retail returning to a more consistent swing, the Scandinavian furnishing firm picked up the instructions again and are now on track for a November kick-off. Vinod Jayan, managing director of Al-Futtaim IKEA, said of the upcoming launch: “We are delighted to open a new Ikea store at Al Wahda Mall, given the mall’s strategic and central location, we will be in the city centre closer to where the many people live”.

Fairmont Marina Abu Dhabi It’s fair to say that the city has watched the giant pink arch of the Fairmont Marina Abu Dhabi hotel rise with curiosity. It achieved architectural icon status even prior to its launch, which was originally slated for March but has now been delayed until, well – we’re not sure. There are rumours, and they are just that at this stage, that management of the hotel has been passed to another big hotel chain, which may or may not also be part of the Accor group. And we appreciate that’s cryptic, but isn’t that befitting of this mysterious grand arch watching us from its waterfront perch. ETA: 2021 we presume.

Social media immediately went into a speculative meltdown about where those iconic pastel blue parasols might be pitching up, but the actual coordinates have remained a closely guarded secret, until now… What’s On has the dizzying privilege to announce that the new Cove Beach will be on Reem Island in Abu Dhabi. Yes, the capital is getting itself a luxurious vibe-tribe beach club, with a 100-seat alfresco restaurant and lounge, cabanas, an infinity pool deck, and 300 metres of pristine private beach lapped by cutglass island waters. A gastronomic journey of Indian ambition and flavour ike all fine art, gastronomy works best when it connects with you personally, when there’s a coherent story informing the design, an interplay of themes, passions, and a well-executed narrative behind the chewing. There has to be an element of, and we apologise in advance for this terminology, a journey. And our culinary voyage at Punjab Grill began with us throwing down a challenge to the restaurant. This What’s On writer suffers from a relatively severe nut allergy, which can be quite restrictive with some forms of Asian cuisine.

Chef Sandeep Ail was undeterred, however, saying that the restaurant is happy to cater to specific dietary requirements with just a few hours’ notice. So here we sit, in this stylish modern Indian brasserie, a few steps away from the postcard waterfront of the RitzCarlton Grand Canal’s Venetian Village. A palate-warmer arrives at the table, a selection of poppadoms alongside eight individual house-made condiments. Chef Ail tells us the restaurant aspires towards a zero food-waste policy, and with dips like the superb orange chutney which is made from left-over orange peel, a strong subplot is already starting to form. Plate number one is farm-fresh burrata, served with Punjabi aubergine bharta, red pepper chutney and a South Asian interpretation of cornbread. It’s a declaration of intent, a complex series of nuanced flavour layers. The UAE-made burrata is the delicate dairy centrepiece around which the dish is staged, the aubergine croquette pairs perfectly and the lightly-spiced cornbread is a creative win all of its own.

We try a modern interpretation of a mughal chicken dish, which arrives in wisps of wood chip smoke and is flanked by apple curry and raita; then a malwani duck breast with sol kadhi and narangi sauce; a signature biryani; and a final savoury serving in the form of tandoori lamb chops, with daikon chutney and rogan jus. It’s a glorious cacophony of intelligentlycrafted mouthfuls. It’s hard to pick a winner, but the slithers of rose-pink duck breast are probably the climax of the meal, lightly courted by the sweet, citrus of the narangi sauce. Verdict: Every single culinary element on each dish is plated with purpose, it’s designed to be evocative of a direction the chef intends to lead us. PAUL SENGUENA Executive chef at Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan The UAE has had a huge impact on my culinary skills. I have been introduced to many traditional dishes and learned how different flavours are used together. I would have never been able to be so creative with dishes had I not had my experience here. The first dish that I ever made was ‘okok’. It’s a popular dish in my country made from gnetum leaves, peanut paste and palm nut juice. One day at home, I decided that I would take over the task of cooking. I was excited to replicate a dish I had watched my mother do many times. My whole family really enjoyed it. I felt such pride. After a long day at work, the dish I can throw together in 10 minutes? That would be pasta carbonara. It’s quick, easy and what’s not to love? All the dishes at our hotel are worth a try. I would recommend some very special items that just launched at Waves. Our bao combo is great, and the new beef tenderloin and burrata are absolutely to die for. The new sweet bao has Nutella, bananas and is also an absolute joy. My last meal on earth would be a special fish dish called le ndomba de poisons. An unassuming restaurant serves up bold carnival eats est to West Kitchen is a neat little restaurant on Al Bzaymi Street in downtown Abu Dhabi. The busy kitchen dishes up a mix of West African and west Indian food for dine-in, takeaway and delivery orders. It’s a culinary concept created by Laddi, a British expat who arrived in Abu Dhabi back in 2014. Laddi’s from a family with Sierra Leonean and Caribbean heritage, which meant he grew up around some pretty incredible food and flavours he realised weren’t widely available in the capital, so he set about filling that market gap.

Laddi tells us that the menu was created through careful consultation from friends and family as well as authentic, familyguarded recipes right from the source. As we sit at the diner’s smart white table, looking through West to West’s culinary line-up, the exciting smells sneaking out from the kitchen tell us that this is going to be a feast worth going up a belt notch for. We opt for carnival goat curry, an order of awojoh binch — an African stew, Jamaican patties, sides of plantain, rice and peas, jollof rice and some of Mama J’s Hot Pepper Sauce. We begin with the patties, the Caribbean version of the empanada, a pastry parcel containing spiced meat and packing some genuine heat. There’s an electric fiesta of flavour going on inside these tasty packages, similar to ones we’ve sampled back in the UK, but a little flex that’s entirely West to West’s own. Purists would argue that you should never enjoy curry goat without a portion of rice and peas. And we’re not here to a pick fight with tradition. The first

mouthful sends us screaming back to Notting Hill Carnival, London’s most vibrant street party filled with big sound systems and even bigger food adventures. The ensemble is spice-perfect and the meat, cooked on the bone, is as tender as you’re likely to find it anywhere. Awojoh binch is a vegan-friendly Sierra Leonean delicacy – a slow-stewed black-eyed bean ode to comfort. This interpretation comes alive with an unmistakeable background glow of scotch bonnet pepper, and what we assume is sprinklings from Mama J’s secret spice cabinet. The plantains and jollof rice come from a winning formula too and are executed faithfully. Despite the diminutive size of this restaurant, everything is big here. The portions, the flavours, the characters of the staff. Is the InterContinental Abu Dhabi’s flagship success story still going strong? mid endless grid systems and working-from-home life, it’s easy to forget that Abu Dhabi is a coastal city. But if you go far enough in any direction, the faint briny breeze will remind you. And if you’re hungry for fruits of the sea, there’s one restaurant in the capital that’s reigned supreme for over 30 years, the 2019 What’s On Awardwinning restaurant – Fishmarket. Ask any long-time resident and they’ll wax lyrical about InterContinental Abu Dhabi’s flagship restaurant, famed for its freshness, huge central counter and unique setting by the sea. But does it still deliver the goods? Lightly fried fish goujons would usually be a mediocre kids menu staple, but the golden batter encasing juicy white meat that arrived from the kitchen as a complimentary appetiser were anything but. Alongside the goujons, we ordered a bowl of the prawn tom yum soup – a popular dish here at Fishmarket, which specialises in Thaistyle seafood. The soup is served piping hot and the forward flavours are sour and spicy, thanks to generous squeezes of lime and strips of fiery Thai chillies. For mains, we headed to the famous fish and vegetable counter to pick our

preference. The huge central counter, which wraps around the cylindrical open plan kitchen, displays fresh seafood on ice plus a vast array of vegetables. We’re given a basket, as if literally in a marketplace, and asked to pick what we wanted, before passing it to the chef, along with our cooking preferences (stir-fried, steamed, or Thaistyle). Then we ordered the fish, a whole seabass ‘grilled, please with zaatar spices,’ which arrived beautifully seasoned and soft, and two enormous lobsters

‘with lots of garlic, butter and lemon pots, thanks’. The latter was a messy love affair, as we crunched and cracked our way to the good stuff, resulting in sticky fingers and stained shirts – all signs of a tasty meal. IL PASSAGGIO A taste of Italy on the doorstep of The Pointe

ven if you take food out of the equation, an Italian would still be one of our favourite restaurants to go to. It’s the way you’re made to feel like family from the moment you step through the door. And it’s that ‘coming home’ feeling that really struck us after spending the evening at new unlicensed Palm Jumeirah restaurant, Il Passaggio. Given its name thanks to the passage which runs from the front to the back of the open plan restaurant, Il Passaggio has nothing to hide when it comes to its cooking ethos. Open kitchens line each side of the passage, encouraging guests to be nosy at what’s cookin’, with the main dining area close to the Palm Fountain-end of the restaurant. The décor is somewhere between Parisian chic and Art Deco, with white leather seats and dark green hardware finished with gold accents. There’s black and white photography along the walls,

and a faux-greenhouse roof – all of which help set the ambience. We’re greeted with a warm smile and shown to a table next to the bar, where a glass-walled room houses a retro bread maker. We immediately start off with a basket of freshly baked bread and the truffle share and tear (Dhs36) which is so absolutely to-die-for that we immediately have to order another. A super thin flatbread pillow is torn to reveal an oozing creamy truffle sauce and warm melted cheese from within. Carrying on the cheese theme, we order the burrata (Dhs60) and halloumi fries (Dhs30). The latter is perhaps too salty for our taste, but that doesn’t stop us from polishing off the lot. We balance the starters out (yeah, right) with a Greca salad (Dhs46), and the finely-sliced peppers, cucumber and kalamata olives make us feel less gluttonous. For the main course we opt for the veal Milanese (Dhs144), and a generous portion arrives, which is perfect for sharing. The meat is perfectly seasoned and lightly fried to create a crisp outer coating, with a handful of Rocca leaves and parmesan on top. To complement it, we go for another truffle treat – the truffallata pizza (Dhs84).

We can’t tell you if it’s better than the tear and share starter, you simply have to have both. This one has a variety of mushrooms and a serving of mascarpone, giving a delicious creamy flavour. After previously trying the French toast from the breakfast menu and falling in love with its crispy-on-the-outside and fluffy-in-the-middle texture, we were thrilled to see it on the dessert selection. This time, however, it arrived a little over-crispy (erring on the burnt side) and failed to live up to our first experience with the dish. The tiramisu (Dhs44) was everything a traditional Italian dessert should be though, with a balance of sweet and bitter flavours and plenty to share around. We were well looked after throughout the entire night, and felt at ease in the restaurant’s knowledge of its cuisine. For every dish ordered, we were given the main ingredient’s origins, and picked up some useful knowledge about the region. It’s creating a huge buzz on socials, but is this Bali-style beach bar and restaurant on The Palm the real deal? e’ve been to Bali a few times. In fact, once this pandemic chaos is over, it’s probably one of the first places we’ll revisit. It’s relaxed, beautiful and, from its beaches, serves up some of the best sunset spots in the world. Located on West Beach, Palm Jumeirah’s most recent development, Koko Bay is about as close to Bali as we’re going to get for a while. Seating spills from the Insta-worthy indoor restaurant to the wooden rattan furniture on the decking and beach, and there are squishy blue bean bags, cabanas and crocheted white parasols adding to the effect. The prime location offers incredible vistas of the Arabian Gulf and that iconic Dubai Marina skyline and watching the sun set from here guarantees one of those ‘pinch me’ Dubai moments. But is there more to Koko Bay than a must-visit sundowner spot? Deviating now from the Bali theme, the menu here is more European-Asian inspired. For nibbles, some comforting potato spirals (ahem, curly fries) and chipotle mayo, are decent accompaniments as we watch the sun go down. Of the hot appetisers, the welldeserved winners are the pulled-duck

lettuce cups (Dhs79) – more about them on p14 – and the delicious lava prawns (Dhs79) served in a tangy Asian sauce. Meanwhile, the chicken teriyaki skewers (Dhs59) are lightly charred, with a smoky flavour that hits all the right notes. After a stellar round of appetisers, the mains are hit and miss. The Cantonese-style steamed red snapper (Dhs119) shows all the promise of being a stand-out dish, but it is overcooked. The ultimate surf and turf platter (Dhs355) was piled high with baby calamari, sea bass, striploin and spring chicken, served with three different

sauces, jacket potatoes and corn on the cob. While it was great for sharing, it’s a case of quantity over quality, with much of the meats lacking depth or flavour. Come for sundowners, stick to a variety of appetisers to share, and Koko Bay delivers. The art showcase returns for a virtual edition

n interactive digital edition of Abu Dhabi Art will bring together galleries and artists from across the world in a number of curated gallery exhibitions and sectors. Taking place from November 19 to 26, six guest curators will work with galleries and artists to present work online, each with a different geographic focus. Integrating live-stream video interviews with artists, curators and gallerists, the 2020 digital fair will also host a public Performing Arts Programme, presented alongside a number of engaging projects for the public.

Despite the problems posed by the pandemic, Abu Dhabi Art has not been silenced this year. Collector’s Forum summer collection of talks, organised by Roxane Zand, included topics such as Collecting Post-Covid; The Future of Art and Artists; Dialogues Between the Artist and Nature; and Globalism and Art Collecting: The Case of the Middle East and South Asia. Sharjah Art Foundation’s magnificent Flying Saucer is now open

harjah continues to make its mark as a cultural destination with news that The Flying Saucer is open to the public after major renovation works by Sharjah Art Foundation. The renovation features new community spaces that will host exhibitions, workshops, film screenings and events. Constructed in the mid1970s, the iconic structure, which has been part of Sharjah’s collective cultural memory ever since, is now restored by Sharjah Art Foundation to reflect its original architecture that draws on the space-age influence of 1960s and 1970s Western literature and popular culture. The site-specific multimedia installation Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent: Nowhere Less Now3 [flying saucer] (on show until 26 December

2020), which responds to the building’s architecture, marks the reopening of the venue. Experience the major installation while exploring the distinct architecture of The Flying Saucer. The landmark’s new features include new exterior spaces and a lower-level community area, including a café, a library, a sunken courtyard and activity spaces. This month, the venue is hosting a range of learning workshops designed for children aged 6 to 15 and their parents,

which focus on photography, image-making, drawing and calligraphy. FUNNY MAN After selling out theatres across the UK, comic Omid Djalili is bringing the laughs to Dubai

t’s been a long time since Omid Djalili opened a show with a belly dance and an exaggerated Arabic accent. Sure, he used to amp up a few stereotypes for effect, before shocking his audience by breaking out his well-to-do London accent for a riff on racial stereotypes, but these days the comic is far too well known in the UK for the set up to work. In fact, if you’re going to see Djalili playing to his Iranian heritage any time soon it’ll likely be on the big screen; Hollywood having embraced him as its go-to ‘middle aged man of Middle Eastern origin’. But despite a list of film credits that runs the gamut from the Oscar-winning Gladiator with Russell Crowe to the musical madness of Mamma Mia 2, the stage remains Djalili’s natural habitat. The 55-year-old, who was born in Kensington in London and has visited his parents’ homeland only a few times, says the theatrical mannerisms of his family members rubbed off on him from an early age. “I guess that’s part of my upbringing. We’re very bold and brash and we want things to happen quickly. Entertain me! Quick, do a dance, sing a song, tell a joke, tell a joke again.”

ith the Mad Max origin story that seems to be 2020’s main running theme, knowing how to survive in the wilderness no longer feels like such an eccentric indulgence. So, when the invite came to experience the UAE’s new Bear Grylls Explorers Camp, we barrel-rolled at the chance. Out there, in the hinterland of Jebel Jais’ via ferrata, What’s On made a pact with nature and emerged sporting a bandana and endowed with a new respect for the great outdoors. 64_What’s On

That’s not a knife After setting off on a trek across a shadowed wadi, our first survival checkpoint was a sit-down knife skills class with Ben, a man whose real-life experiences in facing extremities and mentoring teenagers have left him wary, and with a healthy regard for hidden peril. Your blade is your lifeline, but it comes with its own dangers. Ben teaches us how to whittle primitive, but potentially life-saving tools such as pegs and trap parts.

Nature’s TV Pushing further into RAK’s valleyscape, past puzzled goats and over loose rock underfoot, our next rendezvous is with Jake. “Bear, calls fire ‘Nature’s TV’”, Jake tells us, as the young instructor manages to light a collection of spindly twigs using his bushman’s striking rod. He details a few techniques to spark flame without resorting to matches or a lighter, including the 9V battery and wire wool method, components which are admittedly rare in the wild. The key is to follow the motto of the Scouting organisation of which Mr Grylls is chief and ‘always be prepared’. There’s no point starting a fire if there’s nothing to feed it. You need an ample supply of tinder, kindling, and then bigger wood to hurl on top.

Cheat meals Outside of Deliveroo coverage areas, and in harsh, inhospitable environments, finding your next meal can be a challenge. Instructor Leon lets us in on some tried and tested ways of tracking down water sources, such as looking out for certain vegetation, and where there’s water, there are likely to be ‘snacks’. Luckily for us Martin and Leon had some Bear-inspired treats prepared earlier – mealworms. Well, at least we didn’t have to wash it down with a Bear-inspired beverage. They taste like dryroasted peanuts in case you were wondering.

The rule of three Our expedition guides, Martin and Leon, stop under a lone acacia tree to explain one of the golden rules behind the priorities of survival training. “You can last three weeks without food,” Martin says, although my hangry alter-ego begs to differ. “Three days without water,” he adds sternly, “but only three seconds with a bad attitude.”

Knot OK Tom is our rope skills sensei, and this *gestures at the mountains around us* is his dojo. Through a few practiced flicks of his wrist, Tom relays the ancient art of folding bits of string together. We learn a few vital, genuinely life-saving rope tricks, culminating in the complicated Alpine Butterfly. It’s not ‘how long a piece of string is’ that’s important, it’s knowing what to do with it, and each knot lends itself to a particular problem-solving application.

Skyfall The best exit strategy is very rarely rappelling down a sheer ragged cliff face. But seeing as the simulated extraction that rounded off our training was essentially mountain rescue, over the top we went. We learned here that facing your fears can lead to fulfilment, excitement and a desire to do it again immediately. Stunning sculptures As Dubai Design Week launches down the road this month, be inspired by these pieces of public art around the world

ANGEL OF THE NORTH Gateshead, England A political statement with wings, The Angel Of The North is a contemporary sculpture designed by Antony Gormley and erected in 1998. The looming steel sculpture is 20 metres tall with wings measuring 53 metres across. It’s angled 3.5 degrees forwards to create “a sense of embrace”, according to the artist. The angel signifies that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked tirelessly for 200 years. It also aims to be a positive focus for locals’ everchanging hopes and fears.

Philadelphia, USA Artist Robert Indiana’s homage to romance has appeared in books, on stamps and has been reproduced in many locations around the world. But the original, made from steel in 1970, appeared in Philadelphia. In 2008, Indiana created an image similar to his iconic LOVE but this time using the word ‘hope’, and donated all proceeds to Barack Obama’s presidential campaign.

THE UNKNOWN OFFICIAL Reykjavik, Iceland In a charming courtyard in the chilly city of Reykjavik marches The Unknown Official. The bureaucrat is a satirical piece of public art celebrating the thankless, anonymous job. The 1994 sculpture by local artist Magnús Tómasson depicts a man in a suit holding a briefcase, with his head and shoulders encased in a slab of unsculpted stone. POMPIDOU CENTRE Paris, France Designed for modern art lovers by a team of European architects, the Pompidou Centre stands as a symbol of avant-garde sensibilities. Some hate it, some love it, but since it opened in 1977, no one has doubted its importance in the Parisian landscape. Initially, all the structural elements of the building were colour-coded: green pipes for plumbing, blue ducts for climate control, electrical wires in yellow, and red devices for safety, giving this unique structure an almost Lego-like simplicity.

SINKING BUILDING, STATE LIBRARY VICTORIA Melbourne, Australia The idea of this much-loved piece of public art is that the weight of the great books inside has sunk this library, and that just the top corner of the building peeks out from the pavement. Commissioned by the local council as part of the cityâ€™s art programme, the sculpture is a nod to the Aussie 68_Whatâ€™s On

THE ATOMIUM

Brussels, Belgium Europe’s most bizarre building according to CNN, The Atomium was constructed in 1958 by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects André and Jean Polak. Standing 102 metres high, it is connected by nine stainless steel spheres. The result is the shape of a unit cell of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. Now a museum, the highest

sphere provides a panoramic view of Brussels.

THE GATEWAY ARCH St Louis, USA Shining over the Mississippi since 1947, The Gateway Arch is a 192-metre silver rainbow of hope. It’s the landmark of Missouri, but also a key attraction of the country as a whole. Clad in stainless steel, it is the world’s tallest arch and the tallest monument in the Western Hemisphere. Built as a monument to the westward expansion of the US, it is the centrepiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial.

MUSTANGS Texas, USA This 1980s bronze sculpture by Robert Glen is said to be the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. Commemorating the wild mustangs that roamed much of Texas, the galloping artwork in Las Colinas portrays a group of horses running through a watercourse, with fountains giving the effect of water splashed by the animals’ hooves. The horses were intended to represent the drive, initiative and freedom that were fundamental to the Lone Star state in its pioneer days. What’sOn_69

L A S TMINUTE TRIP Palm Jumeirah meets French Polynesia at Sofitel Dubai The Palm “Welcome back to the Sofitel,” says our waiter, as he pours water at dinner. We exchange a quick glance… we haven’t stayed at Sofitel Dubai The Palm before. Perhaps it’s a standard greeting given to all guests, as he moves on to the next table. When he returns with a basket of sourdough, he tells us that he used to work at the hotel’s World Eatery, and he remembers us from a brunch we enjoyed there some five months ago. That’s some seriously good recall. It’s a warm, welcoming exchange that sums up our overnight stay here perfectly. This Palm Jumeirah hotel may not be Dubai’s newest or biggest – but what it lacks in look-at-me bravado, it makes up for in genuine hospitality. There’s a warmth and familiarity that’s often lacking in UAE hotels, and that vibe extends throughout the resort, where residents and tourists alike are relaxed and in full holiday mode.

The interiors In designing this beachfront resort, the French luxury chain took a stylistic detour to French Polynesia, creating a tropical escape. Living walls of cascading plants line the walkways that lead from the lobby, and the hushed hallways feature natureinspired artworks and stone carvings. It all adds to the sensation that you’ve left the shiny minimalism of Dubai behind. We’ve been invited to spend the night in one of the Sofitel’s Junior Suites. The subtle Polynesian theme continues with slate floors, rich timbers, pops of magenta and orchid purple, and a huge bathroom complete with freestanding oval tub. Outside, two balconies offer a view over thatched roofs and lagoon pools to the Palm and Dubai skyline beyond. 74_What’s On

The food

Soon after settling in, we’re off to the spa for a massage. The receptionist spritzes sanitiser on every available surface. We’re asked to place my shoes in a bag before entering the spa, and to shower before my treatment. The full-body massage using warm frangipani oil is soothing and restorative – after the first few minutes, we even manage to forget that the therapist is wearing gloves. We then head down for a swim. At the main pool, families happily splash in the water and gather on sunloungers around the perimeter. It is, unsurprisingly, the busiest place in the hotel, but the Sofitel has a number of pools available, so if the main one is at capacity, seek out one of the more secluded options.

Dinner is at Porterhouse, a two-time What’s On Award winner. We share tempura shrimp, and calamari – the plump shrimp are pepped up with a piquant dynamite sauce, and the calamari gets its kick from jalapenos. For mains, the grilled sea bass with carrot puree is a beautifully cooked piece of fish with crisped skin and flaky flesh. In what can only be described as a testing time for hoteliers, Sofitel Dubai The Palm has found a rare middle ground, balancing gold-standard safety with five-star service.
